FIRST CRITIQUE

The words solar system refer to a star and all of the objects that travel around it -- planets, natural satellites such as our moon, asteroid belts, comets, and meteoroids. We now know there may be more than 5,000 planets orbiting other stars. Our solar system is part of a spiral galaxy known as the Milky Way. The sun, the center of our solar system, holds eight planets and countless smaller objects in its orbit.

N O I R

Orion constellation lies in the northern sky, on the celestial equator. It is one of the brightest and best known constellations in the night sky. Orion is also known as the Hunter: it is associated with one in mythology. The constellation represents the mythical hunter Orion, who is often depicted in star maps as either facing the charge of Taurus, the bull, or chasing after the hare with his two hunting dogs, represented by the nearby constellations Canis Major and Canis Minor.

O

The sun is a star, a hot ball of glowing gases at the heart of our solar system. Its influence extends far beyond the orbits of distant Neptune and Pluto. Without the sun’s intense energy and heat, there would be no life on Earth. And though it is special to us, there are billions of stars like our sun scattered across the Milky Way galaxy.. About one million Earths could fit inside the sun. It is held together by gravitational attraction, producing immense pressure and temperature at its core.

R

Canis Minor is a constellation in the northern sky. Its name means “the smaller dog” or “lesser dog” in Latin. The constellation represents one of the dogs following Orion, the hunter in Greek mythology. The other dog is represented by the larger constellation Canis Major. Canis Minor was first catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. It contains Procyon, one of the brightest stars in the night sky.

CANI S M IN

The terrestrial planets in our Solar System are also known as the inner planets because these planets are the four closest to the Sun. Terrestrial planets are also called rocky planets or telluric planets. There are four terrestrial planets in our Solar System: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The Moon is not structurally the same as a terrestrial planet, but it does have some similarities.

O

A gas giant describes a planet that is not composed of mostly rock and other solid substances. Gas giants are almost entirely formed of various gases. These planets are not completely gas though. At the center, is what astronomers call a rocky center. This term is somewhat misleading though because the rocky center is actually liquid compounds, including molten heavy metals. Gas giants are also called Jovian planets after Jupiter, the prototype of gas giants in our Solar System. There are four gas giants in our Solar System – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

A gas giant describes a planet that is not composed of mostly rock and other solid substances. Gas giants are almost entirely formed of various gases. These planets are not completely gas though. OR The circumstellar habitable zone, also known as the ecosphere, is thought to exist around all stars, not only the Sun. If a planet is outside of this habitable zone than it is believed to be incapable of sustaining life because outside of this band it is impossible for liquid water to exist.

Earth is in the middle of our solar system’s habitable zone with Mars and Venus on either side.

N

As it sounds, the habitable zone is a region capable of supporting life in a Solar System. Two different regions must meet the right conditions in order for it to be possible for life to exist.

Even though it is now known that this ancient model of a stationary Earth is incorrect, you can still use this model because it is a convenient way to predict the motions of the stars and planets relative to a location on the Earth. A star’s apparent brightness is actually determined by its distance, as well as, its physical size and temperature.

CANIS M I

This imaginary sphere is called the celestial sphere, and has a very large radius so that no part of the Earth is significantly closer to any given star than any other part. Therefore, the sky always looks like a great sphere centered on your position. The celestial sphere (and, therefore, the stars) appears to move westward---stars rise in the east and set in the west.

OR N Sputnik, meaning “satellite” and roughly translated as “fellow traveler,” was launched by an R7 Semiorka rocket. The rocket was launched from Tyuratam near Baikonur in Kazakstan, at that time part of the Soviet Union and now an independent country.

CANIS M I

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made object to orbit the Earth. In a single stroke, this 184-pound object brought into question the United States’ pre-eminence in science, industry, and military power.

The Space Shuttle is the world’s first reusable spacecraft, and the first spacecraft in history that can carry large satellites both to and from orbit. The Shuttle launches like a rocket, maneuvers in Earth orbit like a spacecraft and lands like an airplane. Each of the three Space Shuttle orbiters now in operation -- Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour -- is designed to fly at least 100 missions.

NASA’s space shuttle fleet began setting records with its first launch on April 12, 1981 and continued to set high marks of achievement and endurance through 30 years of missions.

The grid used to create this symbol set is made mostly from circle forms, of varying sizes. Most objects in outer space are formed by the force of gravity, gravity equally pulls on the surface of objects in space which leads to most objects such as our planets to be spherical. In order to represent these forms in space as accurately as possible the grid includes many circle forms, radiating from the center, as well as diagonal lines radiating from the center to aid in creating symmetrical shapes as well as guidelines for the radiating dot lines that are present in many of the symbols.
