SIMON ANDERSON SURFBOARDS 2016
“Simon Boards is my personal journey in the development of board design to help me surf the way I’d like to” Over the years this has meant at times being able to surf at the highest level through to the present time just making sure that I get the most out of my boards. The best part of being a board maker is surfing all your models and making sure they remain true to the mission of being reliable craft that you are stoked to have under your feet. I’m influenced by the World Tour and keep an eye on CT developments and adapt my ideas and board philosophy to present a unique take on state of the art performance boards. I work with young local team surfers like Cooper Chapman, Elliot Marshall and Sam Wrench to adapt new shapes and ideas or fine tune current models to their requirements of high speed beyond possible modern surfing. They are currently surfing models like Face Dancer, XFC, Nomad, T&T and Sam has been instrumental in bringing back the DTS model. Also I continue to develop boards with old school guys like Dayyan Neve and Adam Robertson who are still at a high level but are more interested in power carve foundation surfing. These guys are into the XFC, 5 Spark, Face Dancer and DSC. Working closely with multi generational surfers as well as my own experience I think makes our board program as good as any in the World, we are still small enough to pay attention to detail across the broad range of the models we present and continue to move forward with fresh combinations of design elements that work for a broad range of surfers of all ages. I believe you can trust Simon Boards to deliver well balanced shapes whether they are a 5’6 18 1/8 2 at 20.9 litres or a 6’6 20 3/4 2 11/16 38 litre job. I know that I’ve left no stone unturned in developing balanced boards for bigger guys and I’m confident working with a diverse range of team surfers enables me to shape boards that are also spot on for lighter surfers. In the world of serious surfing I’m excited to be working with brothers Kerby and Cortney Brown and also Mark Mathews. They are surfing XFC’s and DSC models at the most demanding surf locations in WA and elsewhere so keep an eye out for that. This to me is really important for my brand and gives me confidence to present tested and proven step up boards to surfers who are looking to get the most out of surfing good waves or waves that take them out of their comfort zone. Still stoked making boards, working with good people in the surf industry bringing you boards we believe in, boards with a link to the past but an eye to the future.
See you in the surf, Simon.
2016 QUIVER
Description Generous nose and tail area with rounded square tail, vee deck to low boxy rail, deep single concave throughout, low to mid nose entry with slight flip to the tip, fins moved slightly forward.
History A Cooper Chapman collaberation over the last 6 months so he can compete on the QS and maximise speed, carve and air potential
Performance Low volume high performance thruster, Cooper is not really into quad option set ups. For all round 2 to 5 feet (thigh to double over head) surf as short, narrow and thin as your level allows. Low to mid nose entry combined with deep single throughout for fast down the line reactions. Fins forward to assist in the pocket snaps and add slide at the end of the carving arc. Alley elements combine to give Cooper on edge rail power carve potential with speed on tap to take advantage of any ramp and gain more consistency on landings.
Rocker Low to mid nose entry with a sight flip in the last 12”. Moderate smooth tail rocker. Comes standard with Carbon Toe Patches

History This board has a long history from development shapes for an ageing clientele starting 5 plus years ago to inspiration in California from a MacNabb shape in 2014 to down south chance encounters earlier this year. Performance Varmit is a high volume high performance shorter style big board, assisting paddling and take off but not inhibiting performance. The old style outline helps the Varmit feel rock solid through bottom turns, this is crucial to setting up the wave and maximising surfing enjoyment. Surf as short as possible for your target volume for tighter turns in the pocket or surf longer for more help when coming back from an extended period out of the water or recovering from injury or surgery or old age.
Rocker Low to mid smooth nose entry, moderate smooth tail rocker.
THICKNESS VOLUME
The Nomad is my version of a round nose small wave Quad option 5 fin system board. The tail is a wide square tail and in combo with the area round nose gives the outline a fairly straight look which allows the Nomad to surprisingly surf up a bit. Normally you would expect a board like this to be best in 1 to 2 feet surf but it does surf up to 4 feet and still hold in well particularly when surfed as a thruster. The bottom is low nose entry rocker to medium rocker thru the tail with a deep single to double concave ending in vee right at the square tail. The vee helps get the wide board from rail to rail and assists with control when set up as a Quad. Surf the Nomad 5 inches shorter than your regular board and 3/4 to 1 inch wider, thickness should be the same or a 1/16 thinner for high level surfers. The rail is a low soft performance rail combining with the thinnish nose and tail distribution. This is not a chunky fat fish and you don’t need a thick nose on a round nose plan shape board so the thinner feel all over enhances the performance factor. I like the feel of a very short fish style board with the round nose wide tail allowing you to surf more centred on the board. Rocking from the front foot to the back foot to initiate turns with just a subtle shift of weight rather than the need to shuffle you feet back and forward. This also works well as a platform for landing airs.

FIVE FIN
The DTS model is a wide tail rounded square fish style board. The new look DTS has low to mid nose entry, mid to low tail rocker with deep single concave to vee right at the square tail. The rail is low soft with a touch flatter deck going to a slight beak style 80’s nose. Seen before but now DTS has been revitalised by Sam Wrench and Elliot Marshall. We have added a 5 fin drive system to create different feel as thruster or quad and fine tuned the plan shape with area streamlined nose to a slightly pulled in but still wide rounded square tail. They are loving the feel which is fast across the wave and will go vertical or hold speed in drawn out turns and takes to the air nicely. Surf 3 to 4 inches shorter and 3/4 to an 1 inch wider and the same thickness with the same volume to plus 0.50 litres compared to your regular all round board.

Tight and Tiny. The T&T is a smaller board designed to maximise volume by pushing the elements of design this way and that. The aim is to surf a smaller board taking advantage of being able to surf tighter in and around the pocket, tapping in to the speed of the wave but not lose paddling power. The nose entry is a little lower primarily because of the board length and the tail has medium rocker. The concave is deep single transitioning to a vee right at the tail to help initiate turns and flow in turn combinations. T&T is a 5 option fin system model with Quad back fins set to add traction in the barrel if that is what you want, but otherwise works best as a Thruster. The way I keep the volume in a short board is no secret, pushing out the nose area but maintaining a streamlined shape and adding a little width to the tail gets you half way there. Keeping a little thickness thru to the nose tip and adding a fraction thru to the tail brings the volume back up to feel right. You need to surf the T&T 2 to 3 inches shorter but the same width as your normal all round board and 1/16 thicker, but with your normal rail thickness and volume.

By having a relatively narrow board with the increased nose and tail area means the T&T plan shape will not be too curvy and will tend to hold in well in a bit of power. But being a short board you can man-handle it and throw it around quite easily.

Obviously this shorter movement has been going on on the World Tour for awhile and the Pro’s have adapted to it and lifted performance levels. The T&T taps into this and offers average to high level surfers the chance to get the feeling.

A 5 option all round small wave board for 1 to 5 feet.Face Dancer has single concave to vee at the Roundtail, the vee helps as a quad but compliments the board also as a Thruster, creating smooth arcs in extended turns. The single concave and slightly wider shorter configuration means FD is super lively with good control. The quad fin placement in a bit from the rail, allows you to surf high and tight on the face in the barrel. It will hold nicely on the steep take off and release quickly to the high line under the lip if you are lucky enough to find waves like that, and in regular waves it can give you that quad feel through the turns on the wave face when you want a change of pace. Otherwise just surf it as a Thruster and it won’t let you down.

STEP UP
I have added some narrower boards in the Face Dancer range to make the model more of CODE LENGTH a genuine all rounder if that is what you want. I’ve taken it down and I’ve also streamlined the nose a fraction to create a board that will handle the stronger FDS-01 5’11 cleaner days at your local or form the basis for your travelling good wave quiver. Everything else is the same.

The rocker is close to 80′s flatter style providing good stand there speed in trim but with enough lift to keep the concave vee combo loose. Flatter deck and rails feel good to paddle and stand on compared to modern rolled deck. The RSQ tail has a fair bit of area for flat line speed and works in with the flyer at 8 for smooth bottom turns or cutbacks on the longer rail line, to sharp direction changes in the pocket when you rock to the back foot and apply pressure to the flyer.

Performance fish with quad fin option. Classic fish outline, designed to be surfed as a Thruster in the 3 to 4 feet range, holding a predictable line through turns at speed. The Quad fin placement is old-style, rear fins are slightly closer to the rail than the modern Kelly Quad version. As a Quad exhibits extreme speed in 1 to 2 foot surf with sharp direction changes and slide at the end of the turn if desired

Quad and Thruster option swallow tail fish board for waves up to 4 feet. Spudnick has deep single concave with vee at the swallow last 4″ to help quad and Thruster transition rail to rail, also slightly flatter style tail rocker working in with the vee to achieve speed in the flat as well as short arc turns in the pocket. Featuring the modern quad fin placement on a short board to hold in well and deliver lightning speed out of the top when hitting the lip. The rails are 80′s inspired low with a flatter deck but feel nice in the hand. The flat deck feels good to paddle around and stand on. Area but pointy style nose to help with speed in slower waves on the front foot and maintain performance when the waves are rip-able. Spudnick can surf up a little, particularly as a Thruster.

Designed to have speed and life but balanced with control. In bigger waves you need to have a board that sets up the wave from the first bottom turn holding the line as pure as possible, no stutter or drift, but then still loose enough to be dynamic on the face and under the lip or off the top. DSC is dedicated to this mission, surfed at 1 to 3” longer and the same width and thickness as your normal all-round short board. For double step-up boards DSC has slight concave in the usual area under the front foot but going to a slight vee through the back half of the board, this vee area has double concave cutting through the vee panels but fading out towards the round tail. The bottom configuration sets the balance a little more to control and hold in turns to handle the extra speed and power in bigger waves. Double step-up DSC is surfed 4 to 6” longer (or as required) and good surfers can stay with the same width and thickness to a 1/16” thicker than their normal all-round short board, average or older surfers should go 1/8 –” wider and 1/8” thicker than their normal short board.

The Early Bird features increased area in the nose and Rounded Square tail, hidden by a streamlined plan shape. Rocker is strong for a shorter widish board with deep single to double concave and slight vee at the tail working in with the plan-shape to generate easy speed. You can use this to draw out turns when needed or snap tight in the pocket. Designed for waves 1 to 4 feet it is a good option smaller wave all-rounder.

Rounder shape area nose with widish roundtail, good glide on paddle speed for easy take-off and then jump to your feet transition. Somehow still a performance board with easy down-the-line speed, flows nicely through turns, good for roundhouse cutbacks and off-the-top turns.

Stretched-out Mollusc, area nose, roundtail, slight single concave to vee through the back half with double concave cutting through the vee panel and fading out 9” before the end of the board, flatter deck to low soft rail, beak nose, slightly thicker tail. Ultimate wave catching assistance without sacrificing too much performance. Good stand there speed and glide across the wave. Round tail and vee combined with the tail rocker help the big board turn in a short arc off the back foot in cutbacks and rebound well off the top in smaller waves. The Robo has reasonable hold and good drive in bigger surf and is a fun transition board to get back into shape when returning from injury or if your fitness is down or you are getting on a bit and no longer have the time or circumstance to surf regularly. Surf 4 to 6″ longer, 1/2 to 3/4″ wider and the same to 1/8 or 1/4” thicker than your old smaller all-rounder. Dimensions will depend on the level of help you need to catch waves. Keep in mind the bigger you go the less performance you can expect.

Big guy all-round board with the right balance of volume to assure performance and paddling power. Similar to the XFC and Fusion but with slightly toned down concave and rocker to produce a big board that will fit in on the small wave face but maintain speed when you need it
