Beginning School, Beginning Reading by Liz Walker, founder of Reading Chest

When children begin school life, learning to read is one the most important things they will do and will certainly be a hot topic for discussion amongst parents in the playground. Teachers alone cannot teach children to read. Children are likely to spend more time reading individually with their parents than teachers and so it is important that parents feel confident when helping their children learn to read. The method of teaching reading keeps changing over the years. The current way of teaching reading is primarily through phonics. Learning to read using phonics isn’t a new concept, but in the past, it has been used in combination with other methods, such as ‘look and say’ and predicting or guessing words based on pictures or context. Different schools use different phonics programmes, but it is likely that your child will learn their letter sounds in small groups together and then work on blending them to make words. The first sound group is usually ‘s, a, t, p, i, n.’ Later on they will learn sounds such as ‘ai, ee, igh, oa, oo,’. Once children know some sounds, they will be encouraged to blend them together to make words, such as,‘s – i – t’, ‘r – ai – n.’ If your child gets stuck on a word, don’t jump in too quickly to help. Give them a little thinking time to have a go sounding it out themselves. If you do help, it is important to pronounce the sounds correctly. This might seem obvious, but

4

myfamily

when sounding out ‘mat’, it is important to sound out the ‘m’ at the beginning as ‘mm’ sound rather than ‘muh’. There are lots of websites to help with letter sound pronunciation, such as www.oxfordowl.co.uk – (follow the link for ‘expert help’.) As your child’s reading develops, it is essential to make sure they understand what they are reading. There is the danger that children will happily decode all the words on a page but not actually take anything in. If they don’t understand what they are reading, they won’t enjoy it or progress. To check your child’s comprehension, make comments and ask questions about things in the book as they read. Many reading scheme books have comprehension questions inside the front or back cover to help. Children (and parents) look forward to the day when they bring their first school reading book home. Some children may start getting books within a week or so of starting school, however others might have to wait until after October half term or Christmas. This isn’t a

reflection on your child’s reading ability, it is just different practices in different schools. Some teachers will wait until children have learnt a certain amount of letters / sounds before sending books home. Schools also vary in the frequency and number of books that are sent home. It may seem frustrating to only get one book a week that is read within a matter of minutes. It isn’t a bad thing to revisit the same book more than once, however it is important not to allow your child to get bored. If there aren’t enough books coming home from school, then read books from elsewhere too. Children are usually sent home with a reading record. This is a great way for teachers and parents to communicate. Most schools welcome parent feedback on their child’s reading. Be honest and feel free to ask your child’s teacher questions, or would like reassurance. Remember – you know your own child! Do not worry if your child’s reading level is below some of their peers and do not try to push them up through the book bands too quickly just to keep up. Children learn to read at different rates, with some starting school being able to read fluently, whilst others might not recognise any letters. This will all even out within a few years. It is developing the love of reading rather than the skill of reading which is the most important. Children who have a love of reading will have the biggest advantage in the end – so enjoy your child’s reading journey with them!

Give your kids

the maths bug!

Maths, whether we love it or hate it, is a fundamental part of everyday life. It’s a global language. Maths can and should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone!

Rule number one is to drop any negativity on the subject – remember that your child is hugely influenced by you so if you are proudly claiming how bad you are at the subject they will do too! Second, have fun with it! ● Play games – Games such as Monopoly, Yahtzee, HOO HA! or Ulti are great games for practising tables, calculations and logical thinking. ● Mix shopping with learning – When you’re on your weekly shop, get the children involved by asking them to recite the prices and add up what’s in the trolley. Playing the ‘guess how much the shopping comes to’ game is a great way of developing estimation skills, just hope that the lowest guess wins!

So how do we get children excited about tackling a problem and ultimately loving the subject?

● Bake and learn – Baking can easily become an educational game. Test their maths skills by asking them to add up or adapt a recipe for different amounts of serving. The great thing about this is that they get to eat the results at the end!

SLEEP

Coping with disruption to sleep patterns It’s that time of year again where sleep patterns can become disrupted by clock changes, fireworks and good old Santa! The Children’s Sleep Charity specialise in offering advice to families in order to get a good night’s sleep and recognise how important sleep is to maintain the wellbeing of parent and child. There are all kinds of disruptions that can occur at this time of year with children’s sleep patterns. Here are a few tips to help you through some common scenarios that may crop up.

Clock changes We all have an internal body clock and some children’s sleep patterns can be disrupted by the clocks going back in the autumn. Some families find it is helpful to gradually change their child’s bedtime by progressively moving bedtime later. You can do this gradually every 10 minutes over a number of days until eventually your child’s bedtime in synchronised with the time change. If your child is still having naps remember you need to re-schedule those too! Sticking to a regular waking up time can also help to strengthen your child’s body clock so don’t forget that the time they are woken up each day is a really important part of a bedtime routine.

Colds and Bugs During the winter months children often get unwell which can result in disturbed sleep. You know yourself as a parent that a blocked up nose can impact on your quality of sleep and it is the same for your little one. When unwell children may need comfort and responding to. If you need to sleep

8

myfamily

close to your child during their illness then it would be better if you could stay with them in their room rather than moving them into yours. Sometimes it can be difficult to move them out of your room once the illness has past! Try to stick to the usual bedtime routine as much as possible, children love the familiarity that routine brings to their lives. Being unwell can disrupt the best sleepers, as soon as they are back on top form ensure that you go back to their original routine giving lots of positive reinforcement. It can take a few nights for them to begin to sleep well once more but stay consistent in your approach.

Fireworks! At the Children’s Sleep Charity we always get a high number of referrals around 5th November. It is often the noise of the fireworks that can

cause disrupted sleep. If your child is old enough to understand you can pre-warn them that there may be fireworks and explain what the noise is. Max is 5 years old and came to the charity last year as he couldn’t sleep following Bonfire Night. We encouraged mum to implement a new routine and to normalise his fears by reading ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark”, a lovely book by Jill Murphy. Max also looked at firework displays on Youtube with mum and was sleeping through again within a week. Debbie says, “I really don’t know what I’d have done without the charity’s help. Max was utterly terrified. Spending some time talking to him about the positives of fireworks really helped and he loved the story book that the sleep practitioner recommended”.

Santa Christmas is an incredibly exciting time of the year for youngsters and we can expect it to disrupt sleep at times. Try to keep bedrooms free of Christmas decorations so that they aren’t over stimulating. Where possible stick to the usual bedtime routine as much as you can. If you stay away from home then can you take something familiar such as a favourite cuddly toy or a pillow? An overtired child is more difficult to get to fall asleep and then they won’t be able to enjoy the festivities as much. Build in wind down time before bed, you cant’ expect your child to be doing the Hokey Cokey one minute and asleep the next. Keep boundaries firmly in place and if things do slip a little due to visitors then don’t panic but get back into routine as soon as possible.

SAFE AND SOUND

Don’t let accidents poison Christmas Christmas is always a busy time for parents with presents to buy, meals to plan and family and friends to entertain. It is an especially joyous time for children. But with so much going on, Christmas can also be an especially hazardous time for young children when it comes to poisoning accidents. Distracted parents may leave cleaning products within reach of small hands and guests, may leave pills in handbags or counted out on bedside cabinets. Every day 15 young children are admitted to hospital with suspected poisoning. Medicines are the most common cause of accidental poisoning, with everyday painkillers a frequent culprit. Cleaning products such as bleach, oven cleaner and detergent liquitabs are also common hazards. Yet many parents are unaware that safety tops are not child-proof.

The risk for carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning peaks in the winter, often caused by unsafe central heating systems, gas cookers or gas fires. Every year 50 children are admitted to hospital from CO poisoning in the home. Children are at greater risk of serious damage or death from CO poisoning, as their bodies are smaller and weaker than those of an adult and therefore they can be overcome by the fumes quicker. The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) is calling on parents, grandparents, friends and family to ensure medicines and cleaning products are out of sight and reach of young children and to alert families to the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning this Christmas time.

Medicines Ask visitors to your home, such as grandparents, not to leave medicines in places where young children can find them, for example in handbags on the floor or counted out on bedside cabinets. Remember that safety tops slow young children down but are not child-proof.

Alcohol Clear away any bottles of alcohol and the last dregs of drinks left in glasses, as even small amounts of alcohol can poison young children.

Household Products If you are staying away from home, check to see where the household cleaners are. If they’re next to the toilet or under the sink, move them out of reach and sight of young children. Be especially wary of liquitabs – they are bright and attractive to young children who can mistake them for sweets!

Carbon Monoxide Buy a carbon monoxide alarm for any room with a flame-burning appliance such as a gas boiler, gas cooker, gas fire or an open fire.

SAFE AND SOUND

Toddler goggles and Bitrex – the world’s bitterest substance Vigilant parents keep their children safe by looking out for danger and buying products with the Bitrex logo. The world looks different to adults – grey, flat, un-mysterious. Imagine how it looked to you when you had reached the grand age of eighteen months. Then the landscape glittered with excitement. New sights, new smells, new tastes – especially new tastes – were lying around the most unlikely terrain. Where mum and dad could only see the same old fairly clean, fairly tidy kitchen, you, as a toddler, could see an action packed landscape. Is that a Tarzan-ready creeper hanging down from the treetops? Maybe it’s some sort of stripy snake? Or, there again, it could be the flex of an iron. What are these tiny caves just at face level? So convenient that the openings are just the same size as your fingers! There might even be some food in there. Alternatively, it might be an unprotected electrical socket.

And what’s this up here? Is it mist rising off a tropical swamp? It’s hard to tell unless I just pull this piece of cloth a little to get a better look. But imagine what your eighteen month old self would make of laundry liquitabs? They’re glittery as a princess’s jewellery box or a pod of washedup psychedelic jelly-fish. It’s always fun to help out with the household tasks. But this is a real find! And liquitabs are a real success, leaping into shopping trolleys in shoals. Consumers love them for their washing power, their convenience and neat storage. Retailers love them because they take up less shelf-space. Even environmentalists like them because smaller packaging means fewer delivery journeys and a greener footprint. But the downside is that toddlers love them also. They smell as good as they look and they feel as good as they smell. All that’s left is to find out what they taste like, and that’s where the fun stops. As liquitabs have been introduced to markets across Europe and the USA a spike of accidental childhood poisonings have followed. The sensible advice of safe storage is as sound as ever

where liquitabs are concerned – lock away or place up high. But lots of poisonings involving liquitabs have taken place when they have been in use. The only fall-back then is vigilance – a parent alert to hazards at all times. Which is where the toddler goggles come in – seeing your home through the eyes of your child – recognising that what is mundane to you might be a treasure trove to a toddler. They are literally looking at the world from a different angle, seeing excitement and possibilities in ways that you couldn’t image. Get down on your knees and look. Unleash your imagination and experience the excitement of viewing the world from a toddler perspective. This new angle will help you see hazards that might not be visible from your towering adult lookout. But while alertness and understanding of the toddler view is vital, it is unrealistic to assume that all parents will be fully alert all of the time. It’s when attention wavers that Bitrex steps up to help. Bitrex is an aversive agent, so bitter that a thimble-full is detectable in an Olympic sized swimming pool. Even toddlers, not noted for their discriminating taste buds will spit out anything containing Bitrex. The importance of aversive agents like Bitrex as a last line of defence was underlined by a recent European Union ruling that requires their presence in all liquitabs.

So, toddler goggles on, and look out for the red Bitrex logo.

12 myfamily

See what your child sees. Brightly coloured liquid, temptingly tactile packaging; it’s no surprise small children see detergent capsules differently. Thank goodness for Bitrex. Bitrex is the bitterest substance in the world. Responsible manufacturers and retailers add tiny amounts of this harmless substance to household products. If a child swallows something they shouldn’t, they’ll instantly spit it out: because of the bitter taste of Bitrex.

Over the years, Bitrex has helped save thousands of children from serious harm. And in June 2015 this year, new legislation will require that all liquid detergent capsules in Europe contain an aversive agent, like Bitrex, in the capsule’s water-soluble film. However, unlike other aversive agents, Bitrex is the only one that has been rigorously tested. So, as a sweet reminder, make sure you look out for the red Bitrex logo on manufacturers’ labels next time you shop.

HEALTH

Public Health England and NHS England launch a major campaign to help people stay well over the winter months The Stay Well This Winter campaign begins with a national flu vaccination programme for children. This year the programme is being extended to children in school years 1 and 2, and aims to help 3 million children between the ages of 2 and 6. For the first time, the youngest primary school children in 17,000 schools will be eligible to receive the free nasal spray vaccine, making this the largest school-based vaccination programme ever in England. As in previous years, the adult flu vaccine will also be offered for free to those in groups at particular risk of infection and complications from flu. The groups being offered the adult flu vaccine are: ● pregnant women ● those aged 65 or over ● those aged under 65 with long-term conditions ● people who receive a carer’s allowance or who are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if they are ill As well as protecting against flu, the NHS Stay Well this Winter campaign will give advice on how to avoid common illness to people over 65 or those with long-term health conditions, such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease or respiratory illness. The campaign’s messages are: ● make sure you get the flu jab if eligible

14 myfamily

● keep yourself warm - heat your home to least 18 degrees C (or 65F) if you can ● if you start to feel unwell, even if it’s just a cough or a cold, then get help from your pharmacist quickly before it gets more serious ● make sure you get your prescription medicines before pharmacies close on Christmas Eve ● always take your prescribed medicines as directed Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, said: “Let me be crystal clear - flu kills. For many people it is an unpleasant illness but for the most vulnerable in society it is extremely dangerous and can be lethal. Getting the vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from catching flu and I would urge everyone who is offered the vaccine free on the NHS to get vaccinated”. A pilot programme last year showed vaccinating children had dual benefit: as well as protecting them from flu, it also protects others, such as parent, grandparents and siblings, as children are ‘super spreaders’ and are much more likely to infect others. Parents are encouraged to complete consent forms to allow immunisation teams to give the nasal spray flu vaccine to their children. Those children in areas not offering vaccination at school will be able to have vaccination at their local GP or pharmacy.

Preparations in the NHS All frontline NHS staff will once again be offered a free flu jab this season in order to protect themselves and patients from infection. Last year only 54% of staff were vaccinated. NHS leaders

are encouraging them to take up this offer as part of their duty to protect patients and keep them safe. Commenting on the Stay Well This Winter campaign, Keith Willett, National Director for Acute Care for NHS England said: We are making sure we give people the information they need to help them to look after themselves and also to know where to go for urgent advice - whether it’s pharmacies, NHS Choices, NHS111 or A&E. The NHS has strengthened planning for winter this year with work starting earlier than before. Funding was provided to local health systems via clinical commissioning groups in April 2015, and for the first time included in their baseline allocation, to ensure local urgent and emergency care and planned services are sustainable year round. To improve services for the public over the longer term, the NHS is also continuing with the urgent care review. This involves redesigning the urgent care system to reduce the rise in emergency admissions that have put pressures on hospitals and ensuring the public can get the right care, in the right place, every day of the week. Eight areas across the country have introduced new approaches to improve the coordination of urgent and emergency care services. Work is also underway to bring NHS 111 and out of hours GP services closer together to provide patients with a ‘new front door’ to urgent health care services. The new service will offer patients improved access to a new 24/7 urgent clinical assessment, advice and treatment service. PHE has also published its cold weather plan which aims to prevent major avoidable effects on health during cold weather.

MediClock helps to prevent the overdose of children’s medication Developed over 4 years, MediClock is the brainchild of Craig and Tanya Pascoe, who wanted to meet the challenges that parents/carers face when administering children’s medication. They had concerns about timings when giving their children liquid paracetamol when they were unwell. They found themselves making notes on their phones and even having to guess at times when the last dose was given. After a little research they realised that they were not the only parents to experience this problem – it was more common than they had thought! A study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology showed that 22 per cent of babies had been given an overdose of paracetamol over a 12 month period.

Coping with Children’s Colds

In May 2015 the couple launched MediClock, a unique dosing aid that uses of a countdown clock and alarm which can be programmed to alert every 24, 6 or 4 hours, to give parents and carers peace of mind when administering children’s medication. It’s that time of year again and although none of us like to feel unwell, it can be particularly hard for children to shake off a cold. Most colds resolve themselves within a week or so without the need to see your GP but you may want to get advice from a pharmacist – they will be able to advise you on whether an over-the-counter medicine may be appropriate for your child and they will check that you have the right strength and dose.

NEW!

If your child has a cold that's causing a raised temperature and headache, resting will help them to recover. Make sure they drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Giving them infant or children’s paracetamol or ibuprofen, will help to lower their temperature and soothe a headache.

● Timing options 4, 6 and 24 hours count down. ● Alarmed to remind to take medication ● Silent to use as a point of reference to reduce potential overdosing of medication. ● Back light for use in dark and other safety features to avoid the timer being accidently reset. ● Low battery warning and also comes with 2 AA batteries. ● CE approved

Before you give the medicine to them, check the correct dose for your child’s age on the product packaging. Never exceed the maximum dose! Remember to keep a regular check on the number of doses of each medicine that you give your child over a 24-hour period. You may find it useful to use a dosing aid like MediClock to alert you when to administered the medicine. If your child develops severe vomiting, diarrhea or a skin rash, or they complains of a severe headache or a stiff neck, or they become unusually drowsy – get immediate medical attention by either a GP or A&E department. NATURAL HEALTH & BEAUTY

Tips for achieving naturally beautiful skin As winter’s chill takes its first nip and we heat up our homes, our skin can suffer. Whether you have dry skin or an oilier spot prone skin, combination or fairly normal skin, the extremes of bitter cold winds and keeping our homes warm and comfortable can be damaging to your skin – causing dryness, sensitivity and even aging. Then there are all the sugary festive treats and of course alcohol as we hit the party season – overindulging in all the wonderful food and drink on offer at this time of year can have consequences on your complexion at a time you want to look your best.

But what can you do about it? Hydration: You’ve heard it many times before, but the most important aspect of our all-round health is our intake of fresh, clean water. If you’re not drinking 2 litres (2.5 litres for men) of water per day, you’re probably not drinking enough. Green, white and rooibos tea are lovely alternatives to coffee and black tea, and don’t irritate our delicate digestions like our old English favourites do. If you can limit yourself to just one midmorning caffeinated drink a day your skin will love you. Swap your sugar and alcohol: It’s been in the news a lot recently that our intake of sugar and other refined foods, and alcohol has an impact on our health. If you’re a sugar junkie with problem skin, you’ve probably already made this connection for yourself. Sugar can cause spots and blotchiness as well as weight gain, hormonal imbalances, constipation, diabetes and other digestive issues. If you want to celebrate with a drink or two this Christmas, Instead of drinking wine or beer, an easy way to reduce your alcohol and sugar intake is to have a single shot of vodka in a pint of soda water with lots of fresh lime (remember to avoid the cordial which is also packed with sugar). Other sugary culprits include bread and pasta – try swapping bread for skin friendly, slimming alternatives such as ryvita crispbreads, and swap pasta for protein and antioxidant rich grains such as quinoa and buckwheat. Skin brushing: Gentle daily skin brushing is an effective means of continuously revealing fresh skin cells and brighten dull lifeless skin as well encouraging circulation and lymphatic drainage. Make sure you have a soft bristle brush and use gentle, circular and upward motions around your chin, cheeks and forehead, taking care to avoid the more delicate eye area. Finish with cool water and pat dry.

Good Toys and Games

TOYS AND GAMES

Play is an essential part of every child’s life and is vital to their development. Kids learn best when they are having fun because they engage more. Learning through play helps children develop social and cognitive skills, gain self-confidence and mature emotionally.

Christmas Fun for Kids from Mathstraks Games This Christmas, your child can enjoy an enchanted journey of mathematical play with three award winning new numeracy card games by Mathstraks Games. Mathical Creatures, Monster Maths and Fairy Tables offer hours of educational, festive fun for 2-4 players.

Although PC’s, tablets and electronic games play their part in teaching these key skills, it is important to encourage kids to turn off the gadgets and play. Christmas is the ideal time to do this and there are loads of great gifts, games, toys and puzzles that will fire up their imagination, spark their creativity and will keep on giving way beyond Christmas. Here are a few tips to help you to choose good toys and games for your child: ● Look for toys that encourage creativity, such as toys that involve building, making or modelling as these will grow with your child and provide hours of fun. ● Good toys allow children to use their imagination rather than directing how they play – dolls, playhouses, dens and cars are some examples of toys that provide a platform for play. ● It is good for a child to be able to entertain themselves but equally important for them to be able to play with others, share and understand the rules of game play – a game that they can play with other children or their parents, such as a board or card game will help them develop these skills. ● Even in the winter outdoor toys are important – children who play outside score higher on concentration and self-discipline, do better in reading, writing, maths, science and social studies, and are better at working in teams.

Imagination Gaming Awards, silver award winner for Best Numeracy Games – Monster Maths, is an exciting card game for children aged 5+. Monster Maths will help your youngster practise and improve addition skills for 1 and 2 digit numbers – using simple sums, the aim of the game is to be the first player to make a monster. Your little ones will love playing Mathical Creatures – an enjoyable, mathematical card game for children aged 7+ which uses the fun theme of myths and monsters, to teach and reinforce key numeracy skills. This much-loved game will help your child practise and improve their mental arithmetic, and improve their maths confidence through play. Fairy Tables will take your child to a magical realm of fire-breathing dragons, handsome princes and beautiful princesses, where they use their times tables knowledge in a race to place fairy tale characters in stories. This is an ingenious card game to help kids aged 7+ practise and learn their multiplication tables. Mathstraks Games are available from many independent toy and games shops and a variety of online retailers including Amazon.

Unique Toys for Active Kids Ourkidsliketoys.com is all about getting children active, using their imagination and playing the way children should play, but most importantly learning a skill along the way. Launched in September 2014, OurKidsLikeToys.com offers toys that are just a bit unusual. We strive to only select the best in the field, such as the Sirch award winning ride-on range, of Flix or Sibis Max Cars, winners of the Smallish Design Awards for Eco Toy. The Early Rider Spherovelo, is a very exciting product – we like to call it a toddler's first bike. It's a unique rideon/bike that gives children as young as 10 months the foundation skills to ride a bike. Winner of the Red Dot Design Award, it was the world's first ride-on to make the connection between children's senses (vision, pressure, equilibrium) and their motor system. It helps accelerate children's development by letting them learn how to coordinate their muscles in response to what they see and feel, just like on a balance bike. How? Because it's 'safely unstable', the child is required to effect some control like with a balance bike, but the Spherovelo will never fall over.

For the older child we have the fabulous Wishbone 3-in-1 trike available in Red, Green and the ever popular Black Recycled Edition which is made from 100% recycled plastic, so that makes us very happy. Wishbone balance bikes are first a trike, then a bike and then an even bigger bike, not bad value for money. You can also personalise it with a nameplate or some stickers.

FESTIVE TREATS

Festive Tips for Food Allergies Christmas for most of us is a season of fun; spending time with family and friends, opening presents and eating festive treats. But for those with allergies, Christmas is often far from care-free and for some it can be really stressful. We want everyone to enjoy the festive holiday so at Allergy UK we have come up with some tips that everyone can follow to make sure allergy sufferers have an enjoyable, stress-free Christmas. ● If you have an allergy or intolerance, mild or severe, don’t hide away from the festivities in fear. If you are visiting family and friends let them know in advance what your dietary requirements are so they can feel confident when planning meals for you. They’ll be grateful that you have let them know beforehand and you can even give them some ideas for allergen-free dishes ● If you are eating out this Christmas, don’t forget about the new EU food allergy regulations – catering outlets are now required to give information to customers on the top 14 allergens in their food. So be prepared – find out what policies the

32 myfamily

restaurant has in place and remember to warn members of staff about your allergies and intolerances before you arrive. If you want to know more, ask to see their written ingredient lists or speak to someone who can tell you what’s in the dishes. The new regulations should make it much easier for you to make informed decisions on what and where you eat ● If you are catering for someone with allergies this Christmas, don’t be afraid to ask them for advice. It is great to be prepared but don’t over-do it. Most allergy and intolerance sufferers just want to be treated like everyone else and not made a fuss of. So before the food is served, just take them to one side and let them know which dishes are safe for them to eat. ● Remember to have separate serving utensils for the allergen-free food so you can avoid the risk of crosscontamination. It’s a good idea to remind your guests not to mix them up or use their personal cutlery in the shared bowls and plates. For those with serious allergies a reaction can be caused by just a slight hint of allergens. If you are cooking a mixture of meals, allergen-free or not, it can be quite easy to mix up cooking utensils, chopping boards and dishes. ● Try to keep one part of your kitchen separate purely for allergen-free food and make sure you thoroughly wash your hands and cooking equipment when swapping between the sections.

● Try getting creative in the kitchen this Christmas by creating your own allergen-free meals from scratch! Some ‘free-from’ products can be quite expensive so try creating your own recipes by substituting risky ingredients, for example swapping milk for soya in your desserts. We’ve even known people to create their own quirky Christmas treats such as glutenfree Christmas pudding flavoured ice cream! If you’re new to creative cooking then don’t worry – it is the perfect excuse to test your treats before you serve them. As long as you know your ingredients are safe you can try your hand at substituting food into almost any recipe. It isn’t just food that can cause an issue over Christmas. Some people have reactions to indoor allergens like house dust mites and pet dander. Before your guests arrive put some time aside to reduce these allergens around your home. Damp dust your surfaces and vacuum carpets. Don’t forget the difficult little corners as these may have more dust lurking than the rest of the house!

For a FreeFrom, Vegan + Organic Christmas

Five festive feasting tips to keep all your guests happy!

Easy Christmas food and gift shopping delivered straight to your door.

Christmas celebrations bring family and friends together for festive food but keeping all your guests happy at Christmas can be tricky. For anyone new to the wonderful world of a veggie Christmas, or if you are catering for a veggie for the first time, here are a few tips to help –

Rosemary roasties! Roast spuds in olive oil, with a sprig of rosemary, a twist of rock salt and a squeeze of lemon for a deliciously delicate roastie with a light, fluffy centre. Make lots though as everyone loves them.

Tasty trimmings Veggie sausages are widely available, you can roast these until they are nearly cooked then wrap in veggie “bacon” or sundried tomatoes. Secure with a cocktail stick and continue to cook for 5 minutes.

Noël nut roast As a vegetarian alternative, the nut roast has become a popular choice. Delicious hot or cold, and even good in a butty. Making your own is straightforward, easier still with a food processor. Simply take nuts, a few mushrooms, breadcrumbs, herbs, grated vegetarian cheese, and a couple of free range eggs, a stock cube and a splash of soy sauce. Whizz it up and place in a lined loaf tin and bake in the oven for 40 minutes and you won’t go far wrong.

Gallons of gravy and a sackful of stuffing Gravy and stuffing can really make a roast dinner, especially at Christmas. Instant veggie gravy and stuffing is readily available or visit www.vegsoc.org/christmas for homemade ideas.

Magnificent main Not taken with nut roast? Try the Vegetarian Society’s simple yet very tasty Butternut bell or tempt your taste buds with Smoky leek, harissa and hazelnut tart. Visit www.vegsoc.org/christmas for the recipes, you’ll also find seasonal stacks, perfect pies, parcels and all you need for festive feasting.

FESTIVE TREATS

Celebrate Christmas with a Nut Free Guarantee It is that time of year again and how it has come by so fast. Christmas is one of the happiest times of year for most people. Trees and lights go up along with all our spirits. One of the major contributions to the wonderful Christmas season is food. From special boxes of chocolates to mince pies and pastries. It is fair to say our cupboards tend to stay well stocked towards the end of the year.

My husband and I set up Just Love Food Company 5 years ago now and our goal is to make celebration cakes that are great tasting and excellently decorated, inclusive of those with nut allergies. “May contain” is a very common issue for nut allergy sufferers which is why our company comes with a complete nut free guarantee allowing people to feel confident when buying our products knowing their life or their friend’s life isn’t at risk. You can find our celebration cakes in Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, Nisa local and Ocado. On the back of this, we have created an extensive, premium Christmas range. We wanted to supply people something they can share with all the family and I think we have done that. With prices ranging from £18 - £95, we have something for all budgets and word on the street is that Rudolf happens to love a nut free cupcake.

Do any of us sit back and wonder what it would be like to be told that a lot of the seasonal food isn’t available to you and could potentially kill you? Or worse, one of these foods could take your child’s life? As a mum of 3 children, 2 with severe nut allergies, this is a reality.

We are always talking about the benefits of buying a Just Love Food birthday cake but we are aware that allergies are something you live with all year round and through all seasonal occasions. To order any of our Christmas products, contact Karen on bespoke@justlovefoodcompany.com. Each order comes with a small bag of reindeer food. We don’t want to leave the reindeers out now do we?

GUILT-FREE CHRISTMAS

Enjoy a fairer & more environmentally friendly Christmas Christmas doesn’t have to be a time of excess, there are many things you can do to make your celebrations more environmentally friendly. From recycling your tree and used batteries to sending ecards, the simple choices you make can save you money and help the planet. Christmas Trees If you’re choosing a real Christmas tree this year try to buy one that is grown locally. If you are buying from a retail outlet or garden centre, try to find one grown sustainably in the UK. Consider getting a living tree in a pot and with the roots still attached – you can plant it in your garden after Christmas and reuse it the following year. The British Christmas Tree Growers Association can help you find a local supplier, for more information visit www.christmastree.org.uk.

Decorations Natural decorations like holly and mistletoe look and smell gorgeous. They will give your home a more traditional festive feel and you can compost them afterwards.

Guilt Free Gifts It seems strange to use the word ‘gift’ and ‘guilt’ in the same sentence, after all gift giving is a way of expressing your gratitude, recognition and appreciation for someone special. But, when we buy a gift – isn’t it our duty to think about how and where it was made? The highstreet is full of mass produced items, cheaply made abroad with little consideration given to environmental and ethical issues. However this doesn’t have to be, there are plenty of gift options around that you don’t have to feel guilty about.

Organic Buying organic is good for you and the planet, kind to animals and wildlife, and allows you to make a big difference – simply through the way you shop. Organic products are natural, renewable and biodegradable and free from harmful or toxic chemical residues. Organic farming relies on wildlife to help control natural pests, so wide field edges are left uncultivated for bugs, birds and bees to flourish – plant, insect and bird life is up to 50% greater on organic farms.

Batteries not included Instead of an electrical item or a present that needs batteries, give a special experience like theatre tickets or a pamper day. If you are buying electrical goods, choose those that can run off the mains and have an Energy Saving Trust Recommended label – you’ll be saving the recipient energy and money too!

Fairtrade When you buy a Fairtrade gift you will be helping farmers and workers in the developing world to improve the quality of their lives and their futures. Fairtrade connects disadvantaged producers and consumers, promotes fairer trading conditions and empowers producers to combat poverty, strengthen their position in world markets and take more control over their lives.

Handmade Buying handmade, especially locally can greatly reduce your carbon footprint and let’s not forget the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that you are helping to support a skill or trade in a very direct way.

Made in Britain When you buy an item with British pedigree you know that you are not only supporting ethical production, fair wages and decent working conditions but reducing the environmental impact of imported goods. You will also be buying a safe, traceable product that has been produced to very high standards of safety.

Finally always ask shops for a gift receipt so duplicate or unwanted gifts can be exchanged.

Introducing PlayBag I’m a mother to two very different children! My daughter is in her early teens, very sporty and competitive. She started baton twirling five years ago and has achieved a fairly high standard meaning we are out at training probably six days a week and competing around the country several times per year. As my son who is nearly five, often has to come with us I needed something that could keep him entertained that was compact and could be quickly and easily moved and packed away. Thus the first PlayBag was born. Nowadays, wherever we go, a PlayBag comes too with a mountain of various toys! Whether I am at a business meeting, coffee with friends, training or out for a meal, it is much more enjoyable knowing that he won’t be bored! FAMILY TRAVEL

Why take a family break in Britain? The staycation trend shows no sign of slowing and British holiday makers are becoming more willing to take a break on home shores. A growing eagerness to ‘go local’ means more families are giving crowded airports and lost passports the slip in favour of jumping in the car to discover ‘what is great about Britain’. If you are a big foodie fan the diversity of amazing restaurants at boutique hotels and pubs that are reinventing the meaning of ‘pub grub will blow you away’. If what you drink matters just as much to you as what you eat, choose from whisky – not just in Scotland, but Wales and Northern Ireland too – or gin with the perfect tonic, cider in Somerset and excellent wine made across England and Wales. Drink these in situ, at the distillery or vineyard, and you’ll no doubt encounter people passionate about their product – and you may just give your perception of British food and drink a shakeup.

Cultural familiarity, geographical distance and ease of access definitely makes Britain an attractive destination – but, what else does a British holiday offer? From chocolate box villages in The Cotswolds, to magnificent film-backdrop glens in Scotland through to ‘world’s-best’ beaches in Wales, there’s plenty to admire in our green and pleasant land. But there’s also so much to do, eat and be entertained by. It’s the wealth of experiences on offer that makes Britain so great.

52 myfamily

For thrill-seekers, and those who like to ‘earn’ their delicious pub meal, there are myriad ways to feel exhilarated in Britain. North Wales is becoming known as an ‘adventure playground’, with Zip World, Bounce Below (an underground trampoline in a slate mine, obviously) and brand new Surf Snowdonia. Meanwhile, hikers and walkers will find inviting paths and trails all over the UK, and wild-swimmers, waterfallwanderers and water-trapoliners can get as wet as they like. Culture vultures might think their entertainment lies within the confines of the city, but they’d be

wrong. Head to Glyndebourne and Garsington for world-class opera houses plonked in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by beauty. Add to that a horde of elegant men and women in black tie and ballgowns, and you have a truly unique experience to rave about when you get home. The grounds of stately homes like Chatsworth in the Peak District act as art galleries, with contemporary artists showcasing grand-scale works at historic homes across the country.

When it comes to accommodation, whether you want to experience staying in a haunted castle, treehouses, windmills, gypsy caravans or yurt, or you opt for a more conventional like a boutique hotel, quaint country cottage or B&B – Britain has it all!

The Straw Cottage

A magical place for children to explore and where parents can have comfort and peace – The Straw Cottage offers an idyllic holiday away from it all. “I want to stay here forever”, one young guest at the Straw Cottage sums up how children feel about this unique holiday. “The children love stream dipping, the treasure hunt, building dens and playing on the swing,” says Margot Porter who with her husband Anthony built the Straw Cottage in an idyllic position in open woodland by a streamside meadow on their 130 acre farm. “It’s great to see children having fun doing simple things like exploring the woods or flying the kite. We also have a list of twenty things to do – like seeing the stars, creating wild art, bird watching, or rolling down a hill – all without the need for technology!” she said. The Straw Cottage, as the name implies, is built of straw. It has no electricity but it does have candles, lanterns, a wood burning stove, oven, hot shower and flushing loo which with cosy beds and squashy sofas make it a perfect combination of adventure and comfort. Outside dark skies, birdsong, the sound of the stream and views of the hills complete the experience. BUMP, BIRTH AND BABY

Workday Practicalities for breastfeeding mothers by Anna Burbidge for La Leche League GB © Many women plan to return to paid work in the months following the birth of a baby, and stopping breastfeeding can appear to be the simplest solution. However breastfeeding is a lovely way to reconnect with a baby at the end of the day and can help both of you cope with the separation. As well as providing nutritional needs, breastmilk is packed with antibodies so breastfed babies are sick less often and their parents have one-third the work absences of parents of formula fed babies.

What are the options? If a woman has worked for an employer for at least 26 weeks she can request flexible working hours, asking for changes to her days, hours or place of work, shorter shifts, to work part-time or move from evening/ night shifts to day in order to continue breastfeeding. It is indirect sex

discrimination for an employer to refuse a flexible working request from a breastfeeding mother if there are not good business reasons for the refusal, and if it results in the mother stopping breastfeeding. This could be a temporary change in contract while she is breastfeeding. It may be possible to work from home for all or some of the time or even bring the baby to work.

Planning ahead It’s a good idea for women to make a flexible working request during pregnancy or at least two months before returning from maternity leave. Breastfeeding breaks should be sorted out at least three weeks before returning to work to allow for adjustments in routine. Breastfeeding/expressing breaks in the workplace are not a statutory requirement, but under the Equality Act 2010 it is sex discrimination to fail to assess or take action on health and safety risks for a breastfeeding woman. Providing employees with breaks to breastfeed or express may remove or reduce risks. Employers are required by law to provide a breastfeeding mother with a place to rest, and this could be used as a room to breastfeed or express. The provision of washing facilities and a clean secure fridge to store milk are recommended. Women who feel their employer is supportive are more likely to return to work and have higher morale, productivity and overall satisfaction.

Before you return to work Finding childcare near to the workplace allows time to go and nurse during a lunch break, or to have the baby brought to work. Carers should be supportive of and knowledgeable about breastfeeding. Practicing pumping or hand expressing and freezing the amounts collected gives a small back-up supply. Once at work you will be pumping more milk and the baby can have fresh milk from the day before. Make breastfeeding a priority while you are at home, waiting to introduce a bottle until nearer the

58 myfamily

time you return. Milk can also be given by a carer in a cup or mixed with solid food, depending on the age of the baby. It can make returning easier to start back midweek so you have the weekend to adjust and rest. It’s usually best to express milk at least every three hours while you are away but some mothers decide not to express and just breastfeed at home. Breasts will adjust to this, but you may need to express a little at first. Wearing jackets or cardigans hides any leaking!

Adjusting to the new routine Try feeding the baby in bed before you get up and nurse again just before you leave the baby. If possible breastfeed as soon as you collect your baby, and at home lying down to nurse provides a rest before the evening’s chores. Nursing more when you and your baby are together helps milk production. Babies often adjust; wanting less food during the day and more evening, nighttime and early morning feeds. Listen to your body to avoid problems with blocked ducts and mastitis. The biggest problem working mothers face is emotional and physical fatigue. Breastfeeding and pumping sessions can be rest times and it helps to establish priorities for housework so you don’t end up doing everything at home. Breastfeeding doesn’t last forever and your baby will gradually wean but continuing to nurse after returning to work can be a positive thing for everyone. There can also be considerable pressure on women to go back to paid work even though they would love to be at home for longer. Staying at home with a baby is something many women find enjoyable and fulfilling even if they need to make substantial changes to their lifestyles to allow this.

Finding support and information For further information about working and breastfeeding our LLL Shop has variety of leaflets. Maternity Action have a leaflet Accommodating breastfeeding on return to work and also supply information for employees.

BUMP, BIRTH AND BABY

Getting ready for SShhhh… Don’t wake the baby! your new baby Preparing for the arrival of your new baby is an exciting time and you’ve probably already thought about all the lovely baby goods that you are going to buy.

It is frustrating when you’ve eventually got your baby to sleep, but then when you lay them down, they wake up again.

During your pregnancy it’s also good to get organised and plan for your baby’s arrival with a ‘To-do list’ so that you are fully prepared for when your baby arrives. If you are a pen and paper kind of girl here are a few points to get you started – ● Make an appointment to see your midwife or GP about starting your antenatal care ● Speak to your midwife about a healthy diet in pregnancy and which foods to avoid ● Find out about your rights at work ● Learn about the benefits you are entitled to and when you can claim ● Make an appointment for free dental care ● Book antenatal classes ● Find out about exercising and ways to stay active ● If you smoke, get help to quit ● Make sure you have been offered all your screening tests ● Start buying the things you will need for your baby ● Write to your employer 15 weeks before you plan to stop work ● Claim Maternity Allowance (after week 26) ● Complete your birth plan ● Make sure that you know the signs of labour and what to do when the time comes Your list will help you keep track of things you need to do during your pregnancy but to make sure that you don’t miss anything it’s worth paying a visit to www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-andbaby/pages/to-do-list-pregnant.aspx where you can put your own personal checklist together online.

This could be due to the Moro reflex, part of baby’s survival response that kicks in to ensure that they are not left alone. It works by causing the baby to wake when laid flat or as soon as you try to move them away from your body and contact with you is lost. But thanks to a very simple solution from two Sussex based Dads that problem has been solved! The Snugglebundl is a soft cotton wrap that has cleverly attached strong handles on the sides so you can simply lift up or lower down your baby without waking them! Its clever design safely supports your baby’s entire body and lifts them so gently they don’t know they’re being moved! With Snugglebundl you no longer need to bend or stoop – by taking the strain from the back, tummy and pelvis it’s a great help for your post birth recovery. It fits securely into car seats, so no more lugging out that bulky car seat; just simply lift your baby out on the Snugglebundl! It can even be used in pushchairs, prams, supermarket trolley seats, cots and cribs. It is ideal for discreet breastfeeding and you can even use Snugglebundl for rocking them to sleep in, which is ideal for colicky babies who can find this extremely soothing.

Bend and stretch Mammas! For many women, pregnancy is a time for making healthy lifestyle changes. It’s not just about what you should give up – but what you can start doing to create the best possible environment for your new baby. Experts agree that all healthy pregnant women should aim for at least 30 minutes exercise on at least five days a week – so if you weren’t active before you became pregnant don’t be afraid to start now. Pregnancy fitness experts FittaMamma say, ‘Regular exercise helps to alleviate pregnancy niggles such as backache or tiredness, builds strength and stamina to prepare you for the birth of your baby and speeds up the recovery period afterwards. Yoga has all the benefits of improving your circulation, strength and flexibility with the added bonus of calming the mind and preparing your body for labour. You’ll find the breathing techniques you practise during a pregnancy yoga session are hugely beneficial when it comes to managing pain when you give birth. Many women find yoga is great for alleviating stress and tension, releasing endorphins to make you feel good and help with more restful sleep.

Not sure where to start? Try these pregnancy yoga poses from FittaMamma:

Child’s Pose is a great way to relieve pregnancy backache ● Kneel on your mat, knees wide apart, feet turned inwards. ● Focus on your breathing, releasing the tension in your lower back, sitting deep into your pelvis. ● Come forward slowly, palms on the floor, arms straight. ● Lengthen your spine as far forward as you feel comfortable, arms stretched out in front of you. If you can, place your forehead on the floor. ● Come up slowly when you are ready.

● Bend your elbows, wrapping your forearms around each other, palms facing, fingers pointing to the ceiling. ● Remain in the pose for 30 -60 seconds before unwrapping your arms and bringing them gently back with your hands on your thighs. Repeat, crossing the right arm over the left.

Dedicated prenatal yoga classes are a great way to meet other Mammas-to-be or follow the recommended pregnancy yoga poses on www.fittamamma.com.

Choose something comfortable and stretchy – FittaMamma maternity fitnesswear is designed especially for pregnant women. Their Pregnancy Yoga Top stretches when you stretch without riding up and their leggings will support your bump when you exercise.

● Kneel on your mat, spine straight, inhale and raise your arms up to shoulder level with palms facing upwards. ● Cross your left arm over the right, elbows resting on top of each other.

For exercise newbies, yoga is a valuable way to introduce exercise into your life and even the most active fitness bunnies will find the stretching, breathing and relaxation techniques of yoga beneficial during pregnancy.

Not sure what to wear?

This sitting version of the Eagle Pose creates space between your shoulder blades, easing tension in your back.

Squatting or ‘Garland’ pose opens up your hips and pelvis and can encourage your baby’s head to engage ready for birth. If you can’t manage a full squat, practise with a low stool or yoga blocks. ● Stand tall with your feet about hip width apart. ● Keep your feet flat on the floor and simply lower yourself into a squat, resting your buttocks on the yoga blocks if it’s more comfortable.

Introducing Maternity fitnesswear that stretches and supports Elizabeth Brown Maternity Looking good when you exercise is such a great boost to your self-esteem and confidence, especially when you’re pregnant. Whether you work out in gym, run or enjoy a prenatal yoga class it’s important to feel good about the way you look. The FittaMamma range of maternity fitnesswear will stretch and fit throughout your pregnancy and beyond. It looks fab, flatters your curves and smoothes your contours. It’s also designed to provide the extra support you need for your baby bump, back and boobs, holding you securely to make exercise (or any day to day activity!) more comfortable. We love the Pregnancy Workout top too – it’s perfect for any pregnancy exercise or everyday wear.

As a mum of four and a plus size woman I had terrible trouble finding maternity clothing when I was pregnant. I wanted every day, comfortable maternity wear which didn’t cost a fortune. I spent hours trawling the high-street and internet, and would come away with nothing. When I fell pregnant with my 4th child I came up against the same issues and frustrations so decided to try and do something about it. After many hours sitting at my sewing machine at home, running upstairs in the middle of a seam to feed my son, I finally came up with my designs and Elizabeth Brown Maternity was born. I found a wonderful pattern cutter and manufacturer who have so kindly guided me through the process and enable me to get to where I am today, the proud owner of Elizabeth Brown Maternity. Wishing you a happy and healthy nine months and beyond!

BUSINESS HUB

5 Need to Know Tips for Busy Mums in Business by Susan Payton, founder of www.thebusinessofmums.com Mum of two and celebrity PA Susan Payton knows what it takes to juggle childcare and career. As Chris Tarrant’s righthand woman for more than 20 years, she organised his life on radio, TV and away from the spotlight. She also worked for other high-profile celebrities including Sports Presenter Gabby Logan and Rugby International Kenny Logan; organised charity events and ran her own buy-to-let property portfolio. But she also understands the dangers of doing too much and not asking for help when you need it as, in 2006, she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. This was a huge wake up call for Susan and she knew she needed to start looking after herself. She went on to train as an NLP practitioner and Life Coach and, in August 2015, realised a longheld dream to launch a website for mums who want to start their own business – www.thebusinessofmums.com – offering support, inspiration and a place to connect with other business-minded mums. “Being a mum, running a busy household and working from home is a tall order at any time of the year” says Susan, “but in the run up to the festive season, with all the added pressure that can bring, it can become overwhelming. It makes sense to plan ahead as much as possible, so here are my top five tips for getting through to the end of the year in one piece …”

OUTSOURCE! – You can’t do everything yourself. Outsourcing the stuff that you are not good at (or don’t enjoy) makes good business sense anyway but, as a busy mum, it is imperative that you get help when you need it. Whether it’s sharing the school run with other mums or hiring a cleaner, a bookkeeper or a virtual PA, it’s ok to ask for help. Be open about what you need and get good at delegating – so that you can focus on the things that only you can do. KEEP A TODAY LIST – I love a list but carrying around a long to-do list can actually make you feel more stressed and overwhelmed. Break it down into bite-size, manageable pieces and then write your ‘today’ list. That way, you know you have everything covered on the master list, but you can just focus on the things you need to get done today. PLAN AHEAD – If your work goes really quiet over Christmas and New Year, think in advance about your budget for that period. A simple cashflow forecast can help to avoid unexpected shortfalls and ease financial worries. If your work gets really busy at Christmas plan how you are going to manage that. Could you take someone on over the holidays for work experience? Contact your local college for information on work placement opportunities. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF – It’s very easy, when you are so busy,

Susan Payton

to neglect your own health and wellbeing, but looking after yourself should be a priority! Making sure that you are fit and healthy and performing at your best will go a long way to helping you get through the busy festive season. I know there are a million and one things to do, but even small things like eating healthy snacks, taking ten minutes out to walk & get some fresh air or turning your mobile phone off in the evenings, can help to keep you sane. BE FLEXIBLE – As busy mums we constantly need to be flexible and adapt – we never know when our plans for the day are going to go out the window because something crops us. And, as we head towards the busy festive season with Christmas shopping, school holidays, social events and family gatherings, it is more important than ever to accept that you are only human and you don’t have to be perfect! Be kind to yourself, accept that you won’t always get everything done and aim to just enjoy the task in hand.

POSITIVE ABOUT AUTISM

Creating the building blocks for success We all know that when caring for and educating children and young people with autism and complex needs there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why specialist providers, like Hesley Group, have pioneered a more person-centred approach, building their range of clinical, support and educational service around the needs of the individual. Building on their experience, unique environment and highly trained clinical and support staff, Hesley have created their acclaimed Hesley Enhancing Lives Programme (HELP). Combining the latest techniques and accredited practices, this innovative valuebased positive behaviour support programme reduces the need for high-risk interventions by taking an empathic and proactive approach. Recent success stories have shown that Hesley’s approach has had a positive effect on the emotional well being of those who use their services. The results really do speak for themselves.

Martin’s story When Martin first arrived at Hesley he was very dependant on his routines. His need for daily structure limited his movements and at one point he hadn’t left the site for over 5 years. Martin was moving towards the transition from children to adult services, which was a very stressful time for him. Plus to add to the challenge, he needed major dental work, which was only available off-site. By creating a bespoke multi disciplinary team around Martin, and by working closely with his parents, Hesley was able to provide Martin with the support and clinical services he needed at this crucial time. A detailed care plan was created and regular meetings and reviews made sure progress was being made, documented and celebrated. Hesley’s building blocks for success, including the investment in staff training, the facilities and development of a highly empowering and safe environment have been vital elements in Martin’s continued personal development. Over the last 12 months Martin has made fantastic progress. The multi disciplinary team have made great use of social stories which allow Martin to interact with the world around him better and have enabled him to make more informed choices.

As everyone at Hesley is fully trained to deliver their Hesley Enhancing Lives Programme, they are also able to offer a consistency of approach that gives people like Martin the stability he needs to grow in confidence. Plus with a stable team around him, he’s able to create bonds with members of the Hesley team. With this comes trust and respect, which has helped Martin a great deal. As a result of this he’s now started to go off-site on a daily basis. Something that was unthinkable at one point. He regularly visits the local supermarket and even visits the dentist. Today Hesley continue to build on these successful foundations and are planning new short, medium and long-term goals for Martin. POSITIVE ABOUT AUTISM

Wear it for Autism is a Huge Success for Third Year Running Sunday 4th October was the third annual Wear it for Autism event at the Millennium Hotel, Knightsbridge. Hosted by Anna Kennedy OBE, founder of autism charity Anna Kennedy Online along with celebrity presenters including Denise Welch, Jane Moore, Richard Mylan, Ian Royce, Ray Lewis and Caprice, this year was the biggest yet!
