IN A
DENTAL
EMERGENCY
Dental emergencies happen unexpectedly every day. You might bite down on a hard object. Or perhaps you’re accidentally elbowed in the mouth.
These incidents could cause serious damage to your teeth or any dental work that you have had done over the years.
Dental emergencies could be serious events that you should never ignore.
Over time, dental problems will get worse, leading to more pain and damage.
So seeing a dentist as soon as the emergency occurs is very important. Putting off treatment could have severe consequences.
Look at how you should handle a dental emergency to prevent further damage.
WHO TO CALL?
The first person you should inform of a dental emergency is your dentist.
He or she will attempt to see you as soon as possible.
This can depend upon the extent of your emergency and their availability.
You need to explain the situation to your dentist as thoroughly as possible so that she can advise you on what to do next.
In some instances, your dentist may not be able to answer your call; when this happens, you need to go to the emergency room.
It is also a good idea to go to the hospital immediately if you are experiencing non-stop bleeding and excruciating pain.
Keep in mind that many dental emergencies are not urgent, although they may feel that way.
HOW TO ALLEVIATE DISCOMFORT
There are some things you can do at home to remedy your emergency, or to ease any pain and discomfort that you are feeling.
The most important thing to do, regardless of the type of dental emergency that you experience, is to remain calm.
If you are anxious, this is an emotion that will trigger responses in the body that may make the dental emergency worse.
Therefore, you need to remain calm while contacting the dentist, or alleviating the discomfort on your own.
Here are some of the ways that you can alleviate pain or remedy the dental issue:
Relieve irritation and swelling by washing your mouth out with a teaspoon of salt that has been dissolved in boiling water. First, let the water cool down to warm. Place a knocked-out tooth in a glass of milk until you can get to the dentist.
 Kill bacteria and alleviate pain by swishing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide.
 Numb irritation and reduce swelling by placing a cold compress over the infected or irritated areas of your mouth. This may also help stop any bleeding that occurs.
 Pain surrounding a specific tooth can often be remedied by flossing.
In most instances, something has gotten stuck between your teeth, or inside the gum tissue, which leads to pain near that specific area.
HOW TO PREVENT A DENTAL EMERGENCY
It is always best to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of a dental emergency.
While it is true that accidents can happen regardless of how cautious you are, there are some steps you can take to lessen the chance.
You should visit the dentist on a regular basis.
Maintain a healthy dental regimen. Stop eating hard foods.
 Wear a mouth guard during physical activity.  And avoid chewing on your fingernails and pencils, amongst other bad habits.
A dental emergency is never fun, but knowing how to handle the situation can make it a little more bearable.
You should always try to ease the situation on your own. Then contact a dentist or medical professional as soon as possible.
After all, you want to do everything possible to save your teeth and protect your smile!
