Energy – a guarantee for the future

Welcome to Astana

Future strategy In 2011 Kazakhstan submitted its bid to host the International Specialized Exhibition EXPO 2017 in Astana. The central theme that we are proposing for EXPO 2017, ‘Future Energy’, is of extreme relevance today and has become one of the top issues on the international agenda. Our country has vast reserves of oil, gas, coal and uranium. Nevertheless, we are actively developing our capacities in the area of alternative energy sources. At the EXPO 2017 Exhibition we aim to bring together and showcase the world’s best practices in energy-efficiency and the latest technological developments in the use of solar, wind and hydrological power. The challenges of climate change around the globe as well as the growing shortages of water, food and energy are compelling the world to embrace a new developmental paradigm. I am convinced that Kazakhstan, with its abundant natural resources and intellectual capacity, is ideally suited to become a platform in the search for the right solutions. We are ready to contribute in every way we can to fostering an international partnership with a view towards building an efficient ‘Green Economy’. In 2017 our capital will be marking its 20th birthday. We would be delighted to host the International Exhibition EXPO 2017 in our country in that anniversary year. On behalf of the people of Kazakhstan, I would like to extend an invitation to people from around the world to visit our extraordinary country. For us this would not only be a great honor, but an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to promoting sustainable cooperation in the area of global energy.

The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev

On 16 December 2011 Kazakhstan marked the 20th anniversary of its independence to the slogan ‘Twenty years of Peace and Creativity’. Throughout those 20 years the country has delivered a proven track record of continuous improvement in standards of living, economic growth and a stable investment climate.

Astana, the capital of the young state, will be marking its 20th anniversary in 2017. Astana embodies the creativity, industriousness and progressiveness of the Kazakh people. In 1999 Astana was awarded the UNESCO ‘City of Peace’ Prize, thus becoming one of the top 30 capitals in the world.

In 2010 the capital of Kazakhstan hosted the OSCE Summit. This was the first ever OSCE Summit to be held outside of Europe, in Central Asia, and was the biggest summit of its kind in the post-Soviet area. Kazakhstan has hosted other important international events such as the 7th Asian Winter Games and the World Islamic Economic Forum.

Energy −

a guarantee for the future

The Theme of EXPO 2017, ‘Future Energy’ touches upon one of the most burning challenges facing the world today – ensuring sustainable energy supplies. The possible shortage of energy resources 6 and the concomitant risks to the environment are at the top of humanity’s list of priorities, and a major concern for the entire global community. EXPO 2017 is slated to become a unique international event, one that doesn’t seek to forecast the future but rather attempts to showcase potential scenarios and options for building a more reliable and sustainable energy future.

Siddhart Saksena The Central Asia Forum of the Cambridge University Chairman PROFESSOR

The Kazakhstan application for the EXPO 2017 holding in Astana – is the attractive initiative and what more interesting is a topic. EXPO 2017 in Astana discovers the perspectives of future, the platform for the new global ideas. Think it’s fantastic and we sincerely support Kazakhstan. Today is an appropriate time and Kazakhstan is an appropriate place to find a support in this beginning.

The great idea for the visitors - Kazakhstan, in particular, Astana will be the great area for this exhibition. In large measure this is because Kazakhstan and its leader – Nursultan Nazarbayev are concerned in the future of energetics, energy security, the value of energy. We should worry about future generations, and the ecological securityis like a door, that opens the vast reserves for people, more clean energy. I think this is a wonderful idea- to hold EXPO 2017 here, in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan has abundant renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, and biomass. However, to date only hydro energy has been developed broadly and extensively applied. Kazakhstan plans to develop renewable and alternative sources of energy: a draft National Program to expand the use of wind energy by 2015 has been elaborated, with a longer-term perspective running to 2024. 13
