Koreusi MRT Transeat Design

KOREUSI is an attempt of a seating bench designed specifically for the Chan Sow Lin Underground MRT Station.

With the theme of ‘Molding Forms’, KOREUSI is a seating design derived from various contextual elements that compliments Chan Sow Lin as a figure of tin mining.

Chan Sow Lin was a leading figure in the tin mining industry that has left a remarkable change within the development of Selangor and Perak and was one of the founding fathers of modern Kuala Lumpur that we know off today. I drew inspiration from the contribution of tin within the economical, social and urban development of Kuala Lumpur as the main philosophy behind KOREUSI’s form derivation.

KOREUSI consists of 2 main structures that makes it sitting form, primarily: 1. The Earth Concrete Stump, and 2. The Shiny Stainless Steel Seat Frames.

The Stump is made out of laterite concrete mix, which is a concrete mix that includes natural laterite mixed together in preparation. The laterite provides a smooth and textured finish that also provides the reddish orange colouration of soil when it dries.

The stump material was chosen as so because I wanted to portray the element of tin ore that becomes the literal foundation and bedrock of Kuala Lumpur (and Malaysia)’s main drive for urban progress. The form was made to be organic with soft edges that imitates the actual tin ores.

The Seating frames are made out of Stainless Steel, that is known for its hardness, durability and strength as a material that could outlast most natural substances. The shiny stainless steel strips mimics the tin ore’s gleam that perpetuates an idea of technological advancement within our nation.

The form was derived from the ergonomic proportions of a sitting train user, in addition to the overhanging configuration that strikes as modern, simple yet rooted to idea of Malaysia’s latent potential as an economic powerhouse within South East Asia.

The design of KOREUSI was intended to be sleek with modern contemporary elements, yet at the same time is humbled with its roots within the Malaysian tropical context.
