THESIS STATEMENT
Essence of Place,
The Filipino community in California desires to be a part of a united experience sharing a similar cultural identity, yet these communities constitute sporadic developments of residential and commercial establishments lacking historical and centralized institutional visibility due to its diasporic population.
This is evident in the East Plaza Blvd. stretch in National City where the community is deprived of open spaces in the midst of shopping centers, under-used parking lots, single-family housing, and abandoned parcels. Weaving a central public space and a series of recreational and social destinations that signify the rich history and culture of the Filipino diaspora in California can revitalize the fabric of the community and can build a unified and culturally established future.
