Progress Report Charles R Drew 2016-2017 School Year GARDENS: Two garden beds donated to Charles R Drew by Slow Food Miami. Garden installment was assisted by Local Miami Chef & WITS Chef Partner, Chef Aaron Brooks (Edge Steak and Bar, 4 Seasons) *Kale Smoothies made for 5th grade with Kale from Garden *Basil Pesto made for 5th grade with Basil from Garden. Garden to Café: Mint, from garden, used to flavor water WITS Lab: Tomato (Tomato Sauce) 18 classes and approximately 350 students taught WITS Labs: Beans (Vegetarian Chili) 18 classes, approximately 350 students taught *5th grade class missed the actual lab at Charles R Drew so a field trip was coordinated to Whole Foods in Coral Gables to see the Lab. Chef Michael Schwartz helped teach this class. MCI, community partnership, helped make this work as well.

WITS Lab: Greens (Honey Mustard, Balsamic Vinaigrette & Yogurt Dip) 18 classes, approximately 350 students taught WITS Lab: Potato (Roasted Potato) 18 classes, approximately 350 students taught

WITS BITS: Sugar Overload 5 classes, 100 students taught *Students were shown how much sugar is in popular drinks and sodas. WITS BITS: My Plate & Eat the Rainbow 16 classes, 350 students taught *Students were taught the importance of making a balanced meal and what it means to “eat the rainbow” Wellness in the Schools inspires healthy eating, environmental awareness and fitness as a way of life for kids in public schools.


WITS BITS: Fabulous Fiber 11 classes, 250 students taught (still reaching remainder of school) *This is an experiment to show that Whole Grain Bread is better processed in our bodies than white, processed bread. Family Fitness Fun Night February 21st, 2017 100 parents and children attended the night and enjoyed a Dance Class, Yoga Class & Competitive Kickball Game. This was followed by a healthy dinner.

Cafeteria Roasted Carrots served on the line May 8th, 2017 Café Day March 21 , Chef Bill Telepan, Michael Schwartz, Clark Bowen & Aaron Brooks made four different salads and distributed them to the children during their lunch period. st

Teacher Appreciation Brunch WITS catered a well-balanced meal for the teachers at Charles R Drew. Teachers were encouraged to “Eat the Rainbow” Liberty City Co-Op WITS & Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI) partnered together to hand out tastings for a certain ingredient that was going to be offered for the Co-Op. Tastings and recipes handed out at the monthly co-op. • Butternut Squash- Sweet & Savory Butternut Squash • Sweet Potato- Sweet Potato Fries • Kale & Spinach- Green Smoothies
