Nothin’ but a hound dog

CATCHING UP ON THE NEWS The following is a look at local news events during the week of Aug. 24.

SHOOTING ON PRINCE Samuel E. Bair, 26, of Lancaster, died Tuesday after being shot at about 1:40 a.m. in the 700 block of South Prince Street, police said. Twenty minutes later there was more gunfire about five blocks Samuel Bair away in the 400 block of Fremont Street; no one on that block was struck but several homes and vehicles were hit by bullets, police said. Bair was able to talk before he died but would not give any information about the shooting to police. Police believe both shootings were connected.

Labor Day may suggest the dog days of summer are fading. But for basset hounds and other hunting pooches, the dog days of fall are just on the horizon. At the Northern Lancaster County Game & Fish Protective Association, about 20 hounds and their owners participated in Saturday’s commencement of the eighth Basset Hound Weekend. Organizer Dean Wickwire said the event proves a fun and leisurely kickoff to the hunting season. “The basset hound, at one time, was the rabbit hound of nobility,” he said. “It was the hound of choice. Now, it’s be-

come the couch potato of choice because they’re just so cute!” Saturday, owners and their four-legged companions ventured from states such as Michigan, Indiana, New York and Maryland to participate in the festivities, including a cookout and a bench competition, which judges the bassets on outward appearance. However, the field trials are the main attractions of the twoday affair, when bassets of all hunting levels get to try a hand — or a paw — at sniffing out some rabbits. “It’s about learning the skills, being around other dogs and Please see HOUNDS, page B6

OPEN TO WOMEN’S GOLF

BY PAULA WOLF

Lancaster Country Club could play host to the U.S. Women’s Open as soon as 2015, it was reported Thursday. Both said last week that negotiations are proceeding toward bringing the nationally televised event, the biggest in women’s golf, to Lancaster. That could mean a big economic boost for the county as an estimated $25 million to $30 million gets spent on hotel rooms, meals, transportation and wide-ranging services related to the event.

SATs ON RISE Most of Lancaster County’s public high schools made progress on SAT scores, despite a report last week that national scores remained stagnant. Garden Spot High School in the Eastern Lancaster County district saw its scores rise more than any other — 85 points in reading, math and writing.

ANOTHER CLOSING Forty-seven-year-old Doneckers, of Ephrata, citing “current economic conditions and industry trends,’’ announced Wednesday that its furniture store is going out of business. Earlier this month, it announced the closing of its fashion store; its restaurant closed at the end of June. The Inns at Doneckers continues to operate.

A bridge worth one last look A cluster of balloons — including one with the words “You Are Special” — hangs on the Route 324 bridge over Pequea Creek, Saturday. Lancaster County’s housing growth hasn’t kept pace with some of its neighbors, according to figures just released by the Census Bureau. The county added 1,468 housing units — including new homes, apartments and mobile homes — from July 1, 2006, to July 1, 2007, for a total of 193,826. While that increase of 0.8 percent outpaced the statewide rate of 0.5, it trailed York and Chester counties, which saw their housing stock climb 1.4 and 1.2 percent, respectively. Rich Brown Sr., executive vice president of the Building Industry Association of Lancaster County, said the numbers make sense. York County is boosted by people moving up from Maryland, he said, Please see HOUSING, page B4

It’s called a family reunion, but none of the attendees are related by blood or marriage. The ties that bind them are made of iron and steel. More than 300 Navy veterans of the USS Hyman (DD-732) Association found their bond upon the destroyer on which they served. The Hyman saw 25 years of service in three major conflicts in the

20th century. The veterans from the ship reunite for the 21st time at the Eden Resort Inn & Suites next month. “It’s a ‘Band of Brothers’ type of thing,” said Ralph Beck, a Manheim resident who was an electrician’s mate on the ship from 1960 to 1962. “You just feel like you’re family.” Beck is the chief organizer of this year’s reunion. The last event, in 2006, took place in Seattle. He said the Lancaster reunion is the biggest Please see USS HYMAN, page B4

Auction for Hospice continues Monday Auctioneer Randy Romie takes bids during the 24th Hospice of Lancaster Labor Day Auction at the Lampeter Fairgrounds, Saturday. Last year, the auction generated $332,000 for Hospice.

The two-day event resumes from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1. Among the highlights will be the 2 p.m. drawing for a 2008 Harley-Davidson FXD Dyna Super Glide motorcycle and the 4 p.m. drawing for a 2008 Mustang GT coupe.

Horse show for mounted, canine patrols Sunday, Sept. 14, the Lancaster City Police Foundation and the Columbia Riding Club will co-sponsor the Fall Festival Horse Show to benefit the Lancaster Bureau of Police Mounted Patrol and Canine Patrol. The horse show begins at 9 a.m. and will be held at Columbia Riding Club, 18th and Franklin streets, Columbia. Clair McCormick and Walt Legenstein, members of the board of directors of Lancaster City Police Foundation, are honorary chairs. Although the city pays the salaries of mounted patrol and canine officers, private contributions cover other expenses. Over the past five years, the Canine Fund has spent $12,000 a year to buy dogs, train dogs and handlers, and pay for dog food,

equipment, cages and runs. Mounted patrol expenses over that period were $18,000 annually and were used to maintain the stable, and pay for feed, shoeing, the purchase of horses, officer and horse training, equipment and veterinary expenses. In July, the foundation began receiving and disbursing funds on behalf of the mounted and canine patrols. The show consists of a pleasure show in the lower ring and a hunter show in the upper ring. The pleasure show judge is Becky Trego, and she will judge halter, showmanship, trail, English pleasure, equitation, western pleasure and horsemanship classes. Columbia Riding Club members will compete for the Cuskey-Boxleitner Memorial Trophy and the Don Kissell

Commemorative Trophy. There will be special awards for the champion and reserve award winners in the halter, beginner rider, open western, non-pro western and youth western divisions. Meg Black will judge the hunter show, which features jumping classes for all levels of horses and riders. Championship and reserve champion awards will be presented in these divisions: lead line, short stirrup, beginner rider, hopeful hunter, novice equitation, open equitation, children’s hunter and open hunter. There will also be a hunter pair class. The show is free. For details, see the Columbia Riding Club Web site, www.columbiarc.org, or call show coordinator Mary Glazier at 872-7049.!
