The History of Rocawear Clothing
Jay-Z sporting his own line. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Roc-A-Fella executive and the world‘s most famous rapper, along with Roc-A-Fella C.E.O., Damon Dash, launched Rocawear Clothing Company in 1999. According to Dash, the hip hop clothing line was created to be a reflection of his, as well as JayZ‘s, personal style of dress. The two partners and long term friends also said launching the Rocawear line was a way to give the Urban and Hip Hop culture communities something long desired. Shawn Carter, born on December 4th, 1969 to the home of Gloria Carter, grew up in the Marcy Project Housing section of Brooklyn. Carter, who‘s worldly known as ―Jay Z―, built a career that boasted the latest European and urban fashions, newer brands, and flawless jewelry. Hip Hop culture immediately followed Jay-Z‘s career from his initial impact and mocked his style of dress in all genres of music culture. Fashionably reasonable, rumors have it that Shawn Carter derived his name Jay-Z from the slang ―jazzy‖. Peers used to think he dressed so fly before rap, that they wanted to give him a nickname related to the word, and then the spoof of the slang, ―Jay Z‖ was born to title Shawn Carter‘s stage name. Damon Dash, who‘s known as Dame, Mr. Fresh To Def, the Ultimate Hustler, and other titles, was born in Harlem, NYC during the year 1975. Dame Dash is known for his marketing savvy that reminds you much of the ―Harlem Hustle‖ many people in Hip Hop culture speak of. Endlessly promoting products that include Urban fashions and Hip Hop clothing in videos through consumer friendly techniques, Dame has definitely been behind the scenes putting work into Rocafella Records and Rocawear Clothing. Since its initial launch in 1999, Rocawear clothing has risen to new heights producing exceptional quality denim jeans, flavorful designed Rocawear Shirts and tops, as well as accessories such as Rocawear hats, Rocawear belts, Rocawear lounge wear, and Rocawear 10
boxers. On top of those accomplishments, Rocawear Clothing also launched a women‘s line, a children‘s line, and international sites that offer exclusive Hip Hop fashion products only retailed to only certain markets.
Co-founder Damon Dash in a Roca Wear ad. In 2005, the Rocawear clothing company made a big change as co-founder Dame Dash sold his stake in the Hip Hop fashion brand for $22.5 million in cash. ―Rocawear was my point of view, a Harlem swagger,‖ Dash told reporters of the sale. ―They gave me $30 million and 75% of Team Roc. I‘m real happy with the deal. I got $22.5 million in cash and the rest in companies (like State Property, Team Roc, Pro-Keds and other entities).‖ In 2007, Jay-Z also exited the Rocawear clothing company, selling the Hip Hop clothing brand for $205 million US dollars to the Iconix Brand Group. Rocawear clothing is the largest acquisition Iconix has made in its history, but expects much growth from the brands. Shawn Jay-Z Carter will retain his stake in the operating company that manufactures all of the Rocawear men‘s apparel line. The mogul‘s two silent partners, Alex Bize and Norton Cher, will continue to run the manufacturing company for Rocawear Clothing. Before leaving the company, Dame Dash launched the Rocawear sub-brand Team Roc. Celebrity endorsements were soon to follow the establishment of the athletic apparel brand as NFL player Larry Johnson and boxer Zab Judah were contracted to be spokes models for the brand. The list of celebrities that have worn Rocawear clothing is endless.

2013 Ferrari 458 Spider - 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show Preview Ferrari finally lets the sun shine on its outstanding 458. By Andrew Bornhop
A couple of weeks in advance of the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, Ferrari has taken the wraps off the new 458 Spider, what the Maranello company says is the ―the world‘s first mid-rear engine berlinetta equipped with a retractable hard top.‖ Ferrari says the hardtop is patented, and made entirely of aluminum. Compared to a traditional folding soft top, the design for this new 2013 458 Spider is said to save some 55 lb. while also being engineered to fit nicely into the well ahead of the engine bay without compromising aerodynamics or performance. What‘s more, the small amount of space needed for the stored top has enabled the designers to include a generous rear bench for luggage behind the seats.
22
For the record, the 458‘s top goes down in just 14 seconds, and the there‘s a large electrically adjustable wind blocker that diffuses cockpit air enough to allow conversation at speeds in excess of 125 mph. And with further regard to airflow, the back of the new 458 Spider has some attractive shapes and buttresses that designed to optimize flow to the engine intakes as well as the clutch and gearbox oil radiators. As expected, the superb powertrain of the standard Ferrari 458 remains unchanged, highlighted by the screaming naturally aspirated direct-injected 4.5-liter V-8 that sends 570 bhp to the rear wheels via Ferrari‘s dual-clutch 7-speed F1 paddle-shift transmission. Also on duty is the E-Diff, which is integrated with the 458 Spider‘s F1-Trac traction control and high-performance ABS to give the driver a wide range of control over the car‘s superb chassis dynamics.
Of note, Ferrari says the throttle mapping and suspension damping have been calibrated for maximum sportiness with the top down. Although a read between the lines here might make give us cause for concern, our experiences with previous Ferrari Spiders (the 360 and the 430) tells us that the new 458 Spider will not even be remotely close to a boulevardier. Top up or down, the 23
new 458 is said to have identical levels of structural rigidity, but one can only assume it‘s not quite up to the anvil-like level of the coupe. On the scales, the new 458 Spider has a dry weight of 3153 lb., some 110 lb. more than the standard 458. While weight gains are expected for structural reasons, the new 458 Spider is nevertheless still a very fast car, able to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in a claimed 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 198 mph. Hang on to your hat!

Critical Mass: The Best Games Of This Generation...So Far
Time flies when you're having fun. It seems like it was only yesterday, but our current generation of console hardware launched nearly six years ago, with the release of the Xbox 360. Nintendo and Sony followed suit a year later, with the Wii and PlayStation 3. Since then, we've been able to enjoy some of the greatest games of all time. We're taking a quick look at the top 10 games of this generation, according to score aggregator Metacritic. While the site has its critics, it's tough to argue that the games on the following list are anything but excellent.
25
#10: Portal 2 Publisher: Valve Developer: Valve Release Date: April 19, 2011 Metacritic score: 95 Game Informer score: 9.5 Valve's followup to 2007's puzzle game Portal made quite a splash, blending intricate physicsbased puzzles with fantastic characterizations. The game added more tools to Chell's arsenal, including glops of paint that interacted with surfaces. Portal 2 definitely showed that the series
26
had a longer shelf life than all of those "The cake is a lie" references.
#9: Red Dead Redemption Publisher: Rockstar Games Developer: Rockstar San Diego/Rockstar North Release Date: May 18, 2010 Metacritic score: 95 Game Informer score: 9.75
27
Rockstar's cowboy-themed game was more than Grand Theft Auto with horses. The company, famed for creating believable worlds, outdid itself with this title. Players could spend dozens of hours simply exploring the game's various canyons, plains, and wilderness. It boasts one of the best ending sequences in games, Which played to the medium's strengths while shocking players.
#8: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Nintendo Release Date: November 19, 2006 Metacritic score: 95 Game Informer score: 10 The Legend of Zelda series is one of Nintendo's most prized franchises, and this Wii release shows why. The launch game introduced motion-based swordplay, and while the controls weren't entirely accurate, it was close enough. For players who grew up swinging sticks and pretending they were swords, this was a dream come true.
28
#7: Mass Effect 2 Publisher: Electronic Arts Developer: BioWare Release Date: January 26, 2010 Metacritic score: 96 Game Informer score: 9.75 With Mass Effect 2, BioWare took a critical look at the first game's design and overhauled many of its shortcomings. The game's inventory system was streamlined, mining was retooled, and the game played like a contemporary shooter. Better still, BioWare made good on its promise that players would see the effects of their decisions from game to game.
29
#6: The Orange Box Publisher: Valve Developer: Valve Release Date: December 11, 2007 Metacritic score: 96 Game Informer score: 9.75 Valve's game compilation remains one of the best deals in gaming history. The Orange Box bundled together Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episodes One and Two, Team Fortress 2, and a little puzzle game called Portal. Each of these games was outstanding on their own, and being able to snatch them all at once felt nearly criminal.
#5: LittleBigPlanet Publisher: Sony Developer: Media Molecule Release Date: October 27, 2008 Metacritic score: 96 Game Informer score: 9.5 Media Molecule's game generated a lot of buzz at 2007's GDC, where Sackboy and the game's whimsical world were shown in public for the first time. A year later, players had the chance to fall in love with the game's simple level-building tools and deep customization. Being able to share and download other users' creations was just the icing on top.
30
#4: Uncharted 2 Publisher: Sony Developer: Naughty Dog Release Date: October 13, 2009 Metacritic score: 96 Game Informer score:10 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 The first Uncharted was a solid game, but a bizarre fourth act and dodgy Sixaxis functionality kept it from greatness. Naughty Dog didn't hold back for the sequel, creating the gaming equivalent to a blockbuster action movie. It wasn't just a cheap thrill ride, though; Nathan Drake was a fleshed-out character accompanied by a cast of well-developed supporting players.
31
#3: Super Mario Galaxy Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Nintendo Release Date: November 12, 2007 Metacritic score: 97 Game Informer score: 9.75 Nintendo took a risk with Super Mario Galaxy, moving from the traditional Mushroom Kingdom setting and pushing the action into space. As it turns out, Mario was perfectly suited to explore the game's selection of microplanets. Super Mario Galaxy did a great job of keeping a gimmick from feeling gimmicky, providing some of the most satisfying action that the plumber has ever
32
seen.
#2: Super Mario Galaxy 2 Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Nintendo Release Date: May 23, 2010 Metacritic score: 97 Game Informer score: 9.25 Nintendo doesn't usually release direct sequels to its Mario games, but the company made an exception with Super Mario Galaxy. Thankfully, we're all richer for the experience. Galaxy 2 expanded on the first game while maintaining its critically important quality. It's one of the rare
33
games that appeals to both hardcore players and casual gamers.
#1: Grand Theft Auto IV Publisher: Rockstar Games Developer: Rockstar North Release Date: December 2, 2008 Metacritic score: 98 Game Informer score: 10 The Grand Theft Auto series defined the latter half of the PlayStation 2's life cycle, giving many players their first taste of an open-world experience. With the Xbox 360 and PS3's improved capabilities, Rockstar was able to push the genre ahead even further. GTA IV's Liberty City is a fully realized metropolis, with distinct boroughs and architecture. Above all else, it's one of the few in-game cities that actually feels alive. This is where Niko Bellic will make his mark. Rather than tell a rags to riches story, Rockstar decided that Niko's journey would end, at best, with him in slightly better rags. It's a technical marvel, an example of the medium's potential power, and, most importantly, it's fun as hell.

Artist Spotlight: Kid Red By Edwin Ortiz
Game the editor puts the spotlight on his lil' homie, who the Compton rapper convinced to pursue rapping, and put him in his "Red Nation" video for a very significant Black Wall Street cameo. As the latest addition to Black Wall Street, you would think newcomer Kid Red would carry on the gang bangin‘ tradition his cohorts have established since its creation in 2004. However, that is far from the truth as the 20-year-old plans to expand the label brand with music more attuned to the party scene. Head honcho Game has likewise given him full support, and it‘s only a matter of time before Kid Red has a record like ―How We Do‖ under his belt. HipHopDX recently spoke with Kid Red, who described how he went from producing/deejaying to rapping, his visible cameo in the ―Red Nation‖ music video and what Game expects of him music-wise. A frequent attendee for the R.E.D. Album studio sessions, he also stated which record impressed him the most. The Mission Statement: ―Kid Red is the young generation of Black Wall Street. People that don‘t know me, but see the red hair and red tattoos, they basically thinking I‘m a Blood, I‘m always with Game troublemaking, but that‘s not what I want people to see. I want to be known as the party dude for Black Wall. Like Game tells me every day, ‗You don‘t have to do gangster, I done did it for you.‘ And I want to make Black Wall Street as big as possible; I just want to expand that brand." Influence In Direction: ―When Game was doing Red Room and Brake Lights , I was messing around with Mars, making beats and stuff. But then I did a song in the Bay with one of my 35
homeboys, and Game heard it overseers and he was like, ‗Why don‘t you just rap? You got the voice.‘ At the time I was deejaying too, so I stopped the deejaying and producing and started strictly making music.‖ Learning From Black Wall Street’s CEO: ―Game is a person I learn from every day, good and sometimes it‘s even bad, but it‘s all good because I love it all. I love his attitude where it‘s like, ‗I did the Hip Hop thing, Kid Red is gonna be known as the life of the party. You go out there and get the fans up in the club. Don‘t get too serious.‘ He doesn‘t want me to get caught up in not having this lyric or not talking about this or that. Right now it‘s all about partying and trying to make fun music.‖ “Got My Red Dre Beats On / Tryin’ To Put My Peeps On”: ―‗Red Nation,‘ that was big for me. That Game and Lil Wayne video, I had a great time. We was there all damn night. [Laughs]‖ ―In that scene me and Compton Menace were both there, and he originally had the Dre beats first while I was carrying around this big 10-foot flag pole that I was swinging. Then Bryan Barber the director was like, ‗Let‘s switch it up.‘ After that cameo I get people every day like, ‗Aye, you‘re the kid from the ‗Red Nation‘ video!‘ I love it man.‖ Current Work: ―As of right now I‘m doing artist development and working on my mixtape. Me and Game have been on the road working on songs. We‘ll even be in the club just writing songs to the beat, but pretty soon everybody will hear from Kid Red.‖ ―So far I‘m about half way through with the mixtape. With me, I don‘t want to rush anything. With new artists these days, everybody just wants to come out the gates quickly. I want to take my time. Just seeing Game and Dr. Dre in the studio, they always take their time with records and people appreciate it more in the end because they see how hard you‘ve been working.‖ The Best Of R.E.D. Album: ―My favorite track off the [R.E.D.] Album is probably ‗Drug Test‘ , ‗cause I saw that whole song get made with Game, Snoop [Dogg], Dre and Sly. It was crazy. Sly is the next Nate Dogg, he‘s the closest we‘ll ever get to Nate Dogg.‖

Album Reviews When Wale signed to the house that Rozay built earlier this year, fans were unsure of what to expect from an emcee who‘s better known for street fashion and sports talk than flaunting his new Mercedes Benz. With The Eleven One Eleven Theory, it‘s evident the D.C. rapper hasn‘t forgotten his roots, and likewise is still focused on his goals that unfortunately soured during his tenure with Interscope Records. Right from the beginning, signature go-go drums courtesy of Best Kept Secret‘s Tone P set a familiar tone on ―Fuck You‖ with Wale laying one of his more memorable verses of late. Showing his appreciation for Rick Ross‘ support, he wittingly quips, ―Wale you so arrogant / Rozay told me break a leg / no wonder why I care again.‖ Other notable tracks like ―Bait‖ and ―Pick.. Six‖ carry this same D.C. vibe with flying colors. In the process, it‘s fair to say that Wale‘s versatility with production has become an underappreciated quality. Very few established rappers arguably could rip a street-anthem cut like ―By Any Means‖ and then approach ―Lace Frontin‖ with the same intensity and flare.
Depending on how you want to gauge it, we‘re witnessing the fourth incarnation of Lil Wayne. First there was the borderline kiddie-rapper. Then there was the circa 2005 version, who made many listeners begrudgingly admit that Wayne suddenly started rhyming his ass off. And of course, there was superstar Weezy— endorser of Auto-tune, impregnator of Pop culture vixens and a man prone to the occasional drug-addled haze, a faux Rock album, and still rhyming his ass off if he felt like it. Through each version, even Lil Wayne‘s detractors have secretly hoped for that complete, signature album where he reconciled the superior lyrical abilities found on his earlier mixtapes with the chart success he‘s found on
his last few solo outings. Unfortunately, Tha Carter IV is not that album. The fact that most of us have spent a week debating what the fallout will be from Wayne‘s Jay-Z diss on ―It‘s Good‖ instead of the album's wins was probably a bad omen. It would seem Ski Beatz can craft a beat for any emcee. Fact. After two decades of laying heat-rock like sheet-rock for everyone from Camp Lo to Curren$y, Roc-A-Fella to BluRoc -- the ―Dead Presidents‖-producer is the exact opposite of complacent. Recent releases Pilot Talk I and II as well as last year's 24 Hour Karate School personify his relentless progression. His latest, 24 Hour Karate School, Part 2 exemplifies his otherworldly range. It‘s a 12-track sonic journey where no backdrop is too similar yet all perfectly mesh like practice jerseys. By production standards, it‘s an impressive listen.
None of this is to say Wayne‘s most recent offering in the ―Carter‖ series won‘t wind up as the country‘s number one album, and potentially spawn a handful of hit singles. If some of Wayne‘s peers had made this album, they‘d be looking at their creative high water mark. But after lyrically standing toe-to-toe with the likes of Andre 3000, Jay-Z and demolishing other artist‘s best singles via his mixtapes, the stakes and expectations have been raised for Wayne. This time around, he occasionally pushes the envelope with ―How To Hate‖ and the Bruno Mars assisted ―Mirror.‖ The latter is a concept track—a rarity from Wayne these days—and the former finds the Weezy and T-Pain duo flipping the script and lamenting over women that have done them wrong.
