Continued from Page 6 The senior citizens dinner will be at 5 p.m. Sept. 11 at Annunciation Community Center, 701 N. Jefferson St. The menu includes pulled pork, cowboy beans, slaw and cherry dump cake. Julie Hedges of the festival committee said the weeklong event has a mix of new features and old favorites. The festival committee has hired a new carnival company. “We’re really excited about it — new everything,” Hedges said. She also noted scheduling changes such as the fun run being a week earlier than usual. Some new events at the festival will include a martial arts demonstration and pony rides. She said some returning favorites include Bohm’s Family Entertainment show, Dusty & Rawhide at the rodeo and Haskell Indian dancers. Local dancers from Studio 320 will also perform at the festival.

Navigating the festival While most events take place at Jesse James Park, most everything else can be found along or near Missouri Highway 33 (Jefferson Street). Jesse James Park is located at the north edge of town on Highway 33. The fun run starts one block to the east of Highway 33. The parade ends downtown at Washington Street and Highway 33. The Little Mr. and Miss pageant is one block west of Highway 33 on Washington Street. Events being held in conjunction with the Jesse James Festival include the Red, White and Blue Rally at Lions Park and the black powder shoot at the James Farm Museum. Lions Park is on Highway 33 in the downtown area. The James Farm is three miles east of Highway 33, via Missouri Highway 92 to Jesse James Farm Road (turn north) and follow the road as it curves to the east. The James Farm will be on the north side of the road.

Local political group wants festivalgoers to stop by for some Americana after parade By Kevin M. Smith A local political group is promising no partisan politics — just patriotism — for an event it is holding in conjunction with the Jesse James Festival. Following the parade Sept. 15, Common Sense for Common People will hold a Red, White and Blue Rally at Lions Park. Common Sense for Common People has had several Tea Party rallies in Lions Park in the past, but event organizers said this is an event for everyone. “It’s about the country,” Karen Mize said. Mize, co-founder of the group, said after attending election debates, conventions and events she’s tired of hearing the rhetoric from both sides. Local Republican and Democrat candidates have Continued on Page 9

Continued from Page 8 been invited to set up tables to provide campaign information at the event, but they will not be speaking. Steve Phipps, president of the Common Sense group, said while rallies at Lions Park in the past have invited people to the microphone, that won’t be the case this time. J.D. & The Chasers will provide live music and Northern Hills Christian Academy will bring its choir to sing patriotic songs. State Rep. Paul Curtman, R-Pacific, will be the featured speaker for the event. The former Marine authored a book titled “Don’t Tread on Me.” Mize said Curtman would be talking about the U.S. Constitution. “He knows it left and right and can answer any question,” Mize said. Mize said she hopes people come to the event to celebrate America and educate themselves going into the November election because this year’s vote will “set the pace for the future.” With a crowd already downtown for the parade, Mize said she hopes many stick around for the rally. “We’re looking forward to a big turnout,” Mize said. There will also be drawings for door prizes, including a Kindle Fire tablet and gift certificates to local businesses. Food vendors and children’s activities will also be on hand.

Kelsey Barrick, 15, practices her lasso technique on a hay bale Aug. 29.

Jesse James Festival goers can get a double dose of the rodeo this year as a youth rodeo, featuring several local competitors, will precede the regular rodeo. The Missouri-Kansas Youth Rodeo Association will host a youth rodeo at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in the rodeo arena at Jesse James Park. Admission to the rodeo is $5 per person. This is the first time in several years that the festival will include a youth rodeo, which will bring back mutton busting. The rodeo will be hosted by High Stakes Rodeo Co. for the Missouri-Kansas Youth Rodeo Association, which includes several students who attend schools in Kearney. The local youth said they’re excited to compete in front of a hometown crowd. “It’s actually in town, so my school friends can come,” Kelsey Barrick, 15, said. They travel to nearly two dozen rodeos each year, the closest being in Cameron, but many require driving at least two hours. “All our friends are going to be there … and our teachers,” Anna Brisbane, 9, said. And friends and teachers will have an opportunity to participate. There will be open mutton busting, so children interested can try their hand at it. A belt buckle donated by local leather shop K-Bar-H will go to the winner as well as the best dressed fan of the night. Another belt buckle will be awarded based on a raffle. Teachers from three Kearney schools will also compete. Continued on Page 19

They’ll be in teams dressing goats. The fastest team will win $100 from Brisbane Veterinary to go to their school. The youth from Kearney in the rodeo participate in goat tying, barrel racing, pole bending and break-away roping. Participants in the youth rodeo will also participate in bull riding, calf and steer riding, and mutton busting. The youth compete in three divisions: Pewee for ages 8 and younger, Junior for ages 9 to 13, and Senior for ages 14 and older. For the Kearney youth, they like to ride. Kate Brisbane, 7, said she likes mutton busting the best. “It’s something I win,” Kate said. Her sister, Anna, prefers barrel racing on a horse. She said it’s fun because she and the horse move fast. Rachel Lay, 14, likes pole bending. “Because it’s fun,” she said. Barrick echoed that. “I just like it,” she said about pole bending. This as much a sport to these Kearney students as football or basketball is to other students in their school. “Nobody believes how hard it is and you have to practice … spend hours and hours,” Lay said. He’s a former bull rider. They all said they form camaraderie with their fellow competitors as they spend the weekend together at events. The parents said they grow a bond with them, too. “You’re rooting for every kid to do well,” Randy Lay, Rachel’s father, said. The rodeo will also feature the Double Trouble trick riders. “They’re real fun to watch,” Kim Brisbane said. For more information, visit mkyra.com.
