Gladstone Farmers Market extends selling season
Gladfest will be Friday to Sunday, Oct. 5 to 7. The theme for the 33rd annual event is “Adventures at Sea.”
Recent rains push outdoor marketplace to stay open every Wednesday through Oct. 24 The city of Gladstone has announced an extension of its farmers market season through Wednesday, Oct. 24. Vendors have been able to keep their crops surviving through this long, hot and dry season with plenty of water and irrigation. Now with recent rains, things are looking good for the fall, and the farmers need a place to sell their produce, according to a press release. The Gladstone Farmers Market will be open almost a month longer than originally scheduled. Shoppers will be able to find winter squash,
decorative gourds, pumpkins, mums and other fall vegetables. There will also be Indian corn and corn stalks, which can be used in fall decorations at home. There also will be plenty of time to stock up on relishes, jellies, rubs, spices and herbs for the winter. The Gladstone Farmers Market is located on Northeast 70th and North Locust streets. On- and off-street as well as handicapped parking are available. The market opens promptly at 2 p.m. and closes at 6 p.m. each Wednesday.

Traffic changes planned during Gladfest Temporary traffic changes will be needed during Gladstone’s annual fall festival to facilitate emergency vehicle access during the three-day event. Gladfest will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and will continue until 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, in the area around 70th and N. Holmes streets. The 33rd annual event will have the theme “Adventures at Sea” and include such activities as a parade, carnival, train show and camel rides in addition to vendors booths. In order to facilitate this event, it is necessary to close some streets and make other streets one-way for the duration of the event, according to a city press release. The downtown location of Gladfest causes some public safety concerns because of automobile traffic and pedestrian traffic congestion. In an effort to ease traffic congestion and facilitate traffic
flow around downtown during Gladfest, the city is once again developing a one-way street traffic pattern for the festival. These changes are necessary to ensure safety and emergency personnel access. The festival traffic pattern will take effect that Friday at noon, except for North Cherry Street, where the traffic pattern will go into effect at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, and Northeast 70th Street, which will close on Friday at 10 a.m. North Holmes will be closed from Northeast 69th Street to Northeast 70th Street on Thursday, Oct. 4, when tents are erected. All one-way traffic patterns will expire on Sunday at midnight. There will be limited access to City Hall until noon Friday, Oct. 5, when it closes. The Gladstone Hy-Vee Scarecrow 5K fun run/walk will be Sunday morning beginning on North Holmes and traveling through the neighborhood.

News in Brief
Proper disposal urged for medications During National Prescription Take Back Day on Saturday, Sept. 29, Northland residents are encouraged to take their unwanted prescription drugs to area drop-off sites for safe disposal. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from the medicine cabinets of family and friends, and, as a result, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration in a press release, the rates of prescription drug abuse and accidental poisonings and overdoses are alarmingly high. Additionally, improper disposal of prescription drugs, such as flushing them, can negatively
impact the water supply and community at large. Locally, the Northland Coalition, with the support of Tri-County Mental Health Services, has partnered with the DEA, Missouri’s Association of Community Task Forces, law enforcement agencies and other communities across the country to encourage the responsible disposal of prescriptions. Prescription drug drop box sites: • Gladstone Police Department, 7010 N. Holmes, Gladstone; open 24 hours; 436-3550; • Kansas City Police Department, North Patrol Lobby, 1001 NW Barry Road; open 24 hours; 4376200; • Kansas City Police Department, Shoal Creek Patrol Lobby, 6801 NE Pleasant Valley Road; open 24 hours; 413-3400;
• Liberty Police Department Lobby, 101 E. Kansas St., Liberty; open 24 hours; 439-4716. Items that will not be accepted include illic-
it drugs, sharp objects, including needles, radioactive medicines, bio-hazardous materials or glass thermometers or other medical devices.

K12itc offers a variety of products and solutions to K-12 organizations, including hosting, back-up s and comprehensive managed services for school technology. The company will open a new office at 5904 NW 63rd Terrace in Kansas City North and has hired 15 new employees
with plans to hire eight additional staff members over the next four years. The state of Missouri authorized an economic incentive package through the Missouri Quality Jobs Program to assist k12itc with its expansion plans. K12itc also plans to invest nearly $940,000 into its office and operations. “I feel that our employees are our No. 1 asset. Wake up Missouri, Kansas is winning the race for jobs Missouri is losing the battle in the cross-state jobs war. A 2011 study found of the 53 companies receiving tax incentives to move to Kansas since 2009, 45 of those have moved from Missouri. Only one moved from Kansas to Missouri. Kansas is also winning the battle for new business in the region. From May 2011 to May 2012, the Kansas City metro area accounted for 4,900 new jobs; 5,000 jobs were added in Kansas, while Missouri lost 100 jobs. Statewide in July of this year, Kansas gained 6,800 new jobs, while Missouri lost 7,700 jobs. And the news gets even worse for Missouri. Kansas has recently passed sweeping tax reforms that will make significant cuts in Kansas state income tax. It is designed to be especially beneficial to small businesses, which will benefit from reduced state income tax rates enabling them to invest more money to expand their
business. Take a look at the following statistics: • Missouri — Last out of 50 states in job creation since 2008. • Missouri — 48th in gross state product) in the last decade. • Missouri — 43rd in economic growth in 2011, last among all the states we border. • Jay Nixon will not disclose his plans for the massive expansion of Medicaid required under Obamacare. This could be a huge cost to Missouri and give businesses another reason to either move or not locate here in the first place. Nixon brags about balancing the state budget while not raising taxes and working closely with Republicans. Truth is, the Republican Legislature won’t let him raise taxes. In addition, Missouri’s credit rating has been AAA for more than 20 years. If these jobs numbers are the result of working closely with the governor, then the Republicans in the state Legislature need to do some-

I wonder what kind of representation we have in the White House. The commander in chief has forbid the Christian chaplains from using the name Jesus Christ in their teachings or their sermons. It can’t be that they would insult someone because we always knew what type of service we were going to. Obama has refused to release a hard copy of his birth certificate. The computer-generated certificate of “live birth” has been declared a forgery by many experts, but he constantly rags his opponent about releasing more years of his taxes. He has told Congress that his administration will wage war without Constitutionally mandated Congressional authorization. He carried this out in Libya. This is a violation of Article 1, Section 8 and U.S. Code Title 50. Under an executive order called National Defense Resources Preparedness, he has sweeping powers to declare martial law and seize American resources and manpower in violation of the Tenth Amendment. These are just a few of the Constitutional laws he has chosen to ignore. I’m a staunch believer in our Constitution and believe when an officeholder pledges to uphold and protect our Constitution, that pledge should be carried out.

with one another, the owners would go to jail.” When did competition become a bad thing in this country? Missourians deserve better. Like it or not, the reality is this: if we don’t make changes now, slowly but surely many of the best businesses on the Missouri side of K.C. will move to Kansas. Many have already moved and with the changes in its state income tax, Kansas will get even more. Don’t blame the businesses; they are just doing what is best for their owners and employees. When businesses move, their employees move, then major retailers move and sales tax revenue declines. Soon after, the sales and property tax base drops, hurting funding for schools, police, fire, roads, etc. Eventually there will be just one decision left to make — who is going to be left to turn out the lights and shut the door.

thing different before it is too late. As for balancing the budget, it is mandated by the Missouri Constitution. After controlling the House and Senate for 10 years, the Republican legislature doesn’t have much to brag about, either. The only major “business friendly” legislation they have passed is tort reform, and that was recently overturned by the Missouri Supreme Court. They will mention the repeal of the franchise tax and other property tax issues, but those have had a minimal effect (obviously) on retaining and attracting business to the state. I recently talked to a local state representative about the cross-state jobs issue. The first thing he said was how Kansas needed to stop poaching Missouri businesses and both states should get together and agree to end these type of incentives. (Sounds like Kansas City Mayor Sly James, doesn’t it?) I said to him, “Are you listening to yourself? If businesses did that same thing

Race for the Cure
Kiwanians provide Library Reading Program picnic
CONTRIBUTED PHOTO
CONTRIBUTED PHOTO
For the seventh consecutive year, the Clay County Public Health Center has participated in fundraising activities for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Kansas City. This year the team raised more than $1,700 in walk/run participation and fundraising activities that will support breast cancer research, education and screening. The funds were presented by the Race for the Cure team and the Director of Public Health, Gary E. Zaborac, to Pam Saccone of the Susan G. Komen/Kansas City office during the health center’s regular monthly staff meeting. Pictured are Saccone, Zaborac and the health center’s fundraising team members, Jody Light, Jeannie Hill and Cindy St. John.
For the 10th consecutive year, the North Kansas City Kiwanis Club has provided a picnic for those children who complete the North Kansas City Library summer reading program. Children and their families lined up to receive hot dogs, chips, pop, and ice cream, prepared and served by Kiwanis members. This year the picnic was provided at the end of the summer, rewarding those children who successfully completed the reading program. The North Kansas City Kiwanis Club meets every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the American Inn in North Kansas City.
Remember to buckle young passengers
National Child Passenger Safety Week is Sept. 16 to 22. According to state law, children who weigh less than 40 pounds must be secured in a safety seat when riding in a motor vehicle.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol joins the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Ad Council, and other safety advocates to commemorate National Child Passenger Safety Week this week, Sept. 16 to 22. The primary goal of this program is to remind all parents and other adults responsible for children traveling in motor vehicles of the importance of child safety seats and seat belts. In 2011, 12 children younger than 8 years old were killed in traffic crashes, and another 1,764 were injured. The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages every driver to make sure child passengers in their vehicles are restrained properly.
METRO CREATIVE
Missouri law states: • Children younger than 4 years old are required to use an appropriate child passenger restraint system. • Children less than 40 pounds, regardless of age, must be secured in a child passenger restraint system appropriate for the child. • Children ages 4 to 8 years old who weigh at least 40 pounds, but less than 80 pounds, and are under 4 feet 9 inches tall, must be secured in a child passenger restraint system or booster seat appropriate for that child. • Children ages 8 through 15 must wear seat belts regardless of the type of vehicle in which they are riding or where they are seated. • Persons younger than 18 years of age operat-
ing or riding in trucks (regardless of gross weight for which licensed) must wear seat belts. • No person younger than 18 is allowed to ride in the unenclosed bed of a truck with a licensed gross weight of less than 12,000 pounds on lettered highways, federal, state maintained highways, and within city limits. There are exemptions for agricultural purposes, special events, and parades. • It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure passengers under the age of 16 are buckled up safely. Those 16 and older are responsible for themselves. For more information, contact the nearest Missouri State Highway Patrol troop headquarters or visit www.nhtsa.com.
