North Kansas City Schools celebrates 100 years By Nancy Hull Rigdon A roomful of people helping plan North Kansas City Schools’ centennial celebration, most of them in their 70s and 80s, heard a question: Who remembers Amelia Keller? Almost every hand shot up in remembrance of the North Kansas City High School principal and teacher. “It’s amazing what a common denominator education is in people’s lives,” Darlene Minx, communications specialist for the school district, said of the moment. This school year, the district is celebrating the 100th anniversary of that commonality. Anniversary plans

include fundraising efforts as well as events. The North Kansas City Schools Education Foundation is raising money for three centennial projects: funding 100 grants worth $100 apiece to enhance student learning, launching a new districtwide reading project and building a historical marker at the district’s central office complex. Sales of keepsakes, including a centennial book, benefit the foundation’s three projects. The book is titled “100 Years of Extraordinary Educational Experience: A History of North Kansas City Schools.” Other keepsakes include T-shirts and cups. The book details the

The local kickoff to the holiday season in Gladstone will be held at 6 p.m. At the new Linden Square, located just west of City Hall on Northeast 70th Street, the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 20. There will be a festive air surrounding the event as student choirs from Oakhill Day School and Antioch Middle School entertain the crowd with holiday favorites. Adding to the celebration, there will be a fireworks display. Mayor Carol Suter and KCTV 5 news co-host Carolyn Long will be the mistresses of ceremonies for the evening’s events. Nov. 20 is also the day Linden Square will officially open to the public for ice skating on the new synthetic ice rink. SCHOOLS: Fundraisers under way Continued from Page A1 district’s history since its 1913 birth. The book has made Minx step back and realize how much the district has evolved. It’s grown to 30 schools, and 16 leaders have led the district as superintendent. Minx said she was struck by the changes through the decades — the beginning of the district’s lunch program and the start of the district’s own bus fleet, to name a few. “Our hope is that peo-

ple will read it and get excited about the schools’ history and realize how much they have been involved in the history of our schools,” Minx said. “Whether you have been a student, teacher, parent or lunch lady, you have shaped our history.” While the fundraising is well under way, the centennial-themed events won’t begin until March. A birthday party and a 5K paired with a community celebration are planned. The school district’s 100th anniversary events

will follow the city of North Kansas Cit y’s 100th anniversary. The city formed in 1912, a year before the school district. “Obviously, this will be a wonderful year-long celebration,” Minx said of the two birthdays. Minx’s work on plans for the historical marker have been rewarding. “As we’ve been looking through photos, you hear, ‘That’s my uncle Fred!’ Or, ‘Hey, I know that teacher!’” she said. “It’s been fun.” CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

In the race for House District 15, Republican Kevin Corlew lost to Democrat Jon Carpenter by 43.77 percent to 56 percent. Republican state Rep. Myron Neth will be returning to Jefferson City in the newly drawn District 17 after defeating repeat chal-

I’ve got to represent everybody, and I’m going to do my best to do that,” Neth said. Republican state Rep. T.J. Berry emerged the victor in District 38 in a race against challenger Kevin Morgan, 59 percent to 40.5 percent. “I did not think it would be by this ratio,” Berry said. He expected closer to a 54 percent margin. “You’ve just got to work like you’re 10 points behind all the time,” Berry said. For the House District 16 seat, Republican Noel Shull beat Democrat Jim Sweere by a wide margin of 61 percent to 38.7 percent.
