Public safety accreditation team invites public input Department seeks 3-year renewal from CELA A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies will arrive Sunday, Dec. 16, to examine all aspects of the Gladstone Department of Public Safety law enforcement policies, procedures, management, operations and support services, Director of Public Safety Michael J. Hasty of the Gladstone Department of Public Safety announced in a press release. Verification by the team that the Gladstone Department of Public Safety meets the commission’s standards is part of a voluntary process to gain re-accreditation — a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, he said in the release. Gladstone Public Safety received its first accreditation in the year 2000 and has gone through the re-accreditation process every three years since then. As a part of the on-site

Fireworks and Christmas lights brightened up Linden Square the evening of Nov. 20 during the Gladstone Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. The kickoff to the holiday season showcased the city’s newest outdoor amenities: an amphitheater, pavilion and ice skating rink. Free skate rentals were offered for those who wanted to try out the new synthetic surface, which requires skates provided by Linden Square Ice Rink. Donations also were collected for the Northland Christmas Store, Children’s Mercy Hospital and the Get Kids Connected Scholarship Fund, which allows children to participate in youth program from the Gladstone Parks and Recreation Department by assisting parents with registration fees. At left, students from Oakhill Day School share a Christmas song with the crowd. Students from Antioch Middle also performed a song at the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Carolyn Long of KCTV-5 was the emcee for the evening’s events. Amy Neal/Gladstone Dispatch photos

Community Voices

County museum needs help to stay open As the president of the Clay County Museum and Historical Society, I feel it is time to let the community know about our financial status. As some of you may be aware, we have an endowment that has in the past provided interest income for operational expenses for the museum and historical society. With the much lower interest rates on our CDs, we now earn significantly less on the endowment than in the past. Coupled with rising insurance and utilities costs, we now face possible closure unless we are able to come up with funding to carry us forward until at least February or March 2014, approximately 18 months from now, when our CDs mature and we are able

CAROLYN HATCHER

We do have an obligation to maintain the building and protect the artifacts under our care, and we have been doing that, but at a drain on our finances. to withdraw the interest that has accumulated. Contributions are somewhat less than in the past, due to the economic downturn and the fact that most of our members are seniors on a fixed income. We have applied for grants, but most are for specific projects and cannot be used to keep the doors open. We have increased our fundraising efforts, with limited success. Our 2012 homes tour netted less than in the past two years, due to inclement weather during one day of the tour. Although the board has tried many ideas for increasing our funding and has cut expenses to the bone,

the results simply do not make up for the significant loss of interest income on the endowment. We have also incurred maintenance expenses on our more than 140-year-old building —plumbing leak repair, HVAC repair, leaking and broken window repair/ rebuilding, all just in the last year. Although some of the labor was donated, this still amounts to much more than our approximate $800 annual income from our endowment. We do have an obligation to maintain the building and protect the artifacts under our care, and we have been doing that, but at a drain

on our finances. We are also reaching out to the community, and to those who have provided funding in the past, with the hope of getting enough contributions to sustain us for at least 18 months. At that time, we will be withdrawing some of the interest that has been allowed to accumulate in the two CDs in past years in order to keep the doors open a bit longer. We are also requesting corporate sponsorship to provide continuing funding for years to come. Any financial assistance anyone can provide would be very much appreciated. The founding members of the Clay

County Museum and Historical Society never envisioned interest rates below 1 percent, since they were able to earn more than 10 percent when the endowment was first established in the late 1960s. Thank you in advance for any consideration you can give us. We are a 501c(3) corporation, so your contributions should be tax deductible. Also, anyone with any ideas for fundraising or who would be willing to be a corporate sponsor is invited to contact me at 415-0066 or info@claycountymuseum.org. Carolyn Hatcher is president of the Clay County Museum and Historical Society.
