Amphitheater set for April debut Entertainment scheduled through October

LINDEN SQUARE FUNDING

By Nancy Hull Rigdon The city of Gladstone is rolling right along when it comes to opening community facilities. Last month, the city debuted its synthetic surface ice skating rink. In April 2013, an amphitheater will debut. The amphitheater is under construction next to the skating rink at Linden Square — a development at 70th and Cherry streets that the city envisions as the heart of Gladstone. During the Nov. 26 Gladstone City Council meeting, Parks Director Sheila Lillis revealed the lineup of events scheduled for the amphitheater’s first season. Between the first weekend of April and the last weekend of October, the amphitheater has acts scheduled nearly every Friday and Saturday, as well as many Sundays. Entertainment will range from Kansas City funk band

The amphitheater will hold its grand opening, named Fanfare on the Square, April

5 to 7. The weekend’s schedule of events includes seven acts, including Beatles tribute band Liverpool and hoop dance group Luna Breeze. Roving entertainment, such as balloon artists and magicians, are also planned. On Thursdays, the city hopes to showcase local talent from schools, dance studios and other community groups. Several of the weekends have themes: Country Rodeo Weekend, Beach Caribbean

Weekend, Way Back Weekend, New Orleans-Mardi Gras Weekend and Rhythm & Blues Weekend. “I was delighted with the list, Mayor Carol Suter said of the lineup. “I loved the idea of theming. It allows people to look ahead and see what they might be interested in. The amphitheater will not host shows on dates when acts would compete with established entertainment events in Gladstone such as

imum wage here with an inflation adjustment, in this case 1.3 percent. The inflation adjustment was approved by voters in 2006 but has been opposed consistently by business groups like the Missouri Chamber of Commerce. Missouri is only one of 17 states with a minimum wage higher than the federal wage, which the state chamber said puts it at a “competitive disadvantage” with surrounding states. “At a time when Missouri businesses are struggling to provide jobs in today’s difficult economic climate, it is concerning news that labor costs will increase and Missouri businesses will become less competitive compared to other surrounding states,” said Daniel P. Mehan, Missouri Chamber President and CEO. With Republicans in a strengthened position in the Missouri General Assembly, the chamber is urging them to overturn the voter-approved inflation escalator. — Eli Yokley for Missouri News Horizon

Sign up for emergency texts from MoDOT The Missouri Department of Transportation has added a text alert option to its E-update email subscription system. This means travelers can get urgent road information sent straight to their mobile devices. Visit www.modot.org/ eupdates to sign up for the service. A smartphone is not required — just a phone that can receive text messages. Those who already have an E-update account should log in to add their provider information and cell phone number. New E-update users should create an account and choose which counties, routes and regions they want to know about. To opt out of the service later, users can remove their cell phone information from their accounts. A MoDOT E-update account is required, and data charges may apply. E-updates also keep the public informed of road conditions, project information and other transportation-related details through email. MoDOT reminds everyone that distracted driving is a major contributor to traffic crashes, and this feature should never be used while driving.

Suit filed in sheriff’s office sexual harassment case By Ryne Dittmer Merri Phillips, a former Clay County sheriff’s deputy, has filed a lawsuit over sexual harassment she says she was subjected to on nearly a daily basis while working for the department. In the case petition, Phillips claims the harassment began shortly after she began working as a deputy sheriff in November 2010, escalating until she left the department in August. The suit was filed on Oct. 31 and served to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 1. In the case documents, Phillips cited several instances of verbal and physical sexual harassment from eight deputies and detention officers, including four deputies who were fired by the sheriff’s office Sept. 21 to Oct. 1 after an internal investigation into the claims. Clay County has been named as the defendant in the lawsuit. “For the purpose of the case, the county as a political body is the party being sued,” Kevin

“The change in county sheriff will have no legal impact on the case.” Kevin Graham,

Clay County legal counsel

Graham, county counselor, said. Phillips’ attorney, Dennis Egan of The Popham Law Firm, did not respond to requests for comment. Among the claims, Phillips described both deputies and detention officers calling her names and making inappropriate comments about her body. Phillips also said she was repeatedly asked to have sex by at least five of the named individuals and was inappropriately touched on several occasions. Among the examples of physical harassment, Phillips describes being forcefully grabbed by two detention officers while working in a control room. Phillips stated the two officers restrained her arms, tied her shoelaces together, and removed

her duty belt and under belt before unsnapping her pants. The officers then released Phillips and allegedly laughed at what they had done. The former deputy said she could not speak and was in complete shock during and immediately following the incident. Phillips claims several of the incidents occurred in the presence of sheriff’s department supervisors, but no actions were taken by the supervisors to stop the harassment. Depositions for the case are scheduled to begin on Jan. 22, coming as the sheriff’s office undergoes a leadership change. Paul Vescovo is scheduled to assume the role of sheriff on Jan. 1 after defeating incumbent Bob Boydston in the November election. “The change in county sheriff will have no legal impact on the case,” Graham said. Don Norris, the sheriff’s legal counsel, said he was unsure of his involvement with the case as the department experiences leadership changes and could not further comment on the situation.

Scammers don’t care what financial chaos they cause Scammers are among the most predatory creatures on the face of this planet. Con artist don’t care if the life savings lost means you’ll be eating cat food for the rest of your life; they don’t care if the cash they’ve conned you out of means you’ll be going without your blood pressure medicine for the next month. It’s like the lion that eats the gazelle. The lion doesn’t care; it’s not personal to the lion. But it sure is to the gazelle. I frequently address senior citizens to talk about how to avoid being a scam victim. Today I’m going to save you an hour and sum up all the advice I give in just two words: Be wary. • Shred all personal documents; don’t give personal information

over the phone to someone unless you’re the one who called; track all investments and banking accounts to ensure there is no unauthorized activity; closely read those “Not a Bills” you get from your insurance company to make sure someone hasn’t hijacked your health insurance coverage. • Deal only with reputable parties. That way if some dude shows up with a $50,000 check you purportedly wrote, the bank might call to make sure you really authorized it. • Ditto anyone else you send substantial sums to — retirement accounts, deferred compensation programs, IRAs and 401k account managers, even health insurers. Make sure they know to call before they empty out your account

and send your life savings to Brazil. • Credit cards can nearly all be managed online. Most credit card banks and companies offer customizable alerts and services that send texts and email alerts when transactions meet or exceed criteria you have established. With such an alert you find out in seconds rather than weeks that someone is using your credit card to buy Lithuanian disco hits on eBay, and can promptly reverse the charges. • Consider investing in an identity theft prevention program, or check with your bank, credit card company, employer or even your

It takes an average of 600 hours to repair the damage done by an identity thief, so having this protection not only prevents most attacks, but also provide financial assistance and technical support in those rare instances thieves get through. The St. Charles Catholic School eighth-grade volleyball team recently won the Christian Spirit Award for players’ Christ-like behavior both on and off the court. This is the highest award bestowed on any team, as all teams in the diocese were considered. Forty-eight seventhand eighth-grade teams were eligible to be nominated. Mid-season, the eighth-graders were nominated by another team’s coach, and the players were observed throughout the second half of the season along with the 23 other nominated teams. Winners were picked based on fair play, teamwork, respect, acceptance of the game’s outcome, emphasis on teaching, good player-coach relationships, acceptance of constructive criticism and the ability to accept the referee’s decision.
