Keystone Awards highlight business success By Dale Garrison Businesses ranging from an older adult center in one of Clay County’s newest communities to historic renovation of older areas were among the 22 organizations honored Nov. 30 at the Keystone Awards Luncheon. Hosted by Clay County Economic Development Council, the awards recognized businesses and

organizations that improve the economic environment and quality of life through new locations or expansion. Job creation is a key factor, but other important factors include significant cultural enhancement and community contributions. The winning Keystone projects totaled approximately $333 million in public and private investment. The entire list of projects nominated for the awards represented more

than $400 million. The 2012 Keystone winners included Benton House of Shoal Creek, Kansas City; Courtyard Marriott at Briarcliff, Kansas City; The Elms Hotel and Spa, Excelsior Springs; EXLTUBE, North Kansas City; Ford Motor Co. stamping plant, Liberty; HeadRush Roasters, Coffee & Tea, Gladstone; Ladoga Ridge Winery, Smithville; The Logistics Store, Liberty; Magna, Liberty; Mosa-

ic Life Care, Gladstone; Mosaic Life Care, Kearney; the National Archives and Records Administration, Kansas City; North Kansas City Hospital Expansion; Rockwell Labs LTD, North Kansas City; Smokin’ Guns BBQ, North Kansas City; Vatterott College, Kansas City; and Villas Downtown, Excelsior Springs. Five special Keystone Community Awards were given for the Bennett Boulevard Roadway, Kearney;

the Kearney High School field renovation; the Smithville High School Performing Arts Center; the North Kansas City Schools Technology Upgrade; and Northland projects by the Missouri Department of Transportation. Clay County Commissioners Pam Mason, Katee Porter and Larry Larson presented the awards during the ceremony at Harrah’s North Kansas City.

The meeting also included a year-end review of Clay County and the EDC by EDC Chair Tony Reinhart. Reinhart said both new and expanding organizations create jobs and economic vitality that enhance the area’s quality of life. “Their growth is one of the key goals for the EDC,” Reinhart said, “And we are proud to have contributed to some of these success stories.”

S P E CI AL C O MM UNI TY AWA RD N KC Sch ools T e chn olo g y Upd ate, 2000 N E 46t h S t., K a nsas C i ty With the philosophy of creating a technologically rich environment while focusing on student learning through a change in instructional practices, North Kansas City Schools invested $2.5 million and created not just a technology upgrade but retained 42 jobs. The project developed out of a technology audit that showed multiple single points of failure and infrastructure needs resulting in the rebuilding of the network infrastructure. In addition, tools that were reliable and encouraged students to be creative with a focus on learning and application as opposed to simply the technology were needed. Research and pilots were done to ensure the right choices. An $8.5-million partnership with Apple was approved by the board to utilize their technology as well as Apple professional development in order to train K-12 administrators, teachers and others to build capacity and sustainability.

Mosa ic Li fe Ca r e 6420 N. Prospe ct Ave., Gladstone Gladstone was one of the recipients of Mosaic Life Care’s five new Northland facilities in 2012. The $2 million investment project created a care center in a previously vacant building in the Tower Plaza Development at the intersection of 64th Street and North Prospect, as well as 20 new jobs. At 6,900 square feet, the project occupies the entire building. The building, which had been vacant for years, is now a primary care facility and offers a new kind of health care to the Gladstone area. Mosaic not only treat conditions and diseases, it works with clients to develop life care plans. The architect was AECOM, and the general contractor was Mid-America Contractors.

K.C. man convicted of robbery at Gladstone pizza restaurant Jurors deliberated 50 minutes before returning guilty verdicts against a 28-year-old Kansas City man for two counts of robbery and two counts of armed criminal action, according to a press release from Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Daniel White’s office. Daniel Dumond Brown Sr., who gave authorities an address in the 6700 block of South Fairway in Jackson County, faces multiple life sentences for the June 30, 2011, robbery of the Gladstone Pizza Hut and the July 2, 2011, robbery of the Arby’s in Liberty. Each robbery carries a term of 10 years to life in prison. Each armed criminal action carries a minimum term of three years in prison and has

no maximum cap. Circuit Court Judge A. Rex Gabbert presided over the case and continued it to 9 a.m. Jan. 11, 2013, for motions and possible sentencing. A pre-sentencing assessment report has been ordered prior to the January hearing, White said. Testimony was elicited during the three-day trial that police, alerted to the robbery of the Arby’s July 2, arrested Brown near Sutherland’s lumberyard on Missouri Highway 291 shortly after the robbery had occurred. Police video of the stop shows Brown discarding currency behind the wheel of his vehicle while appearing to comply with police instructions to lie on the ground. Victims at the

Arby’s promptly identified Brown as the robber. While investigating the Arby’s robbery, Brown was identified as a suspect in the robbery of the Gladstone Pizza Hut June 30. Despite the presence of weapons, no one was injured, White said. “This is a credit to the citizens and law enforcement community of Clay County,” White said. “The victims were careful to ensure their safety but were able to also provide police with details that made the successful investigation and prosecution of this case possible.” Litigating the case for the state were Deputy Chief Wes Rogers and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Katherine Baker, White said.

Emerald ash borer confirmed in Northland Quarantine placed on wood products in Clay, Platte counties

By Angie Anaya Borgedalen If you have an ash tree growing in your yard, you might check whether it has unwelcome guests creating S-shaped tunnels under the bark. The emerald ash borer, an iridescent green bug about a half-inch long, has been spotted in the Northland, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. As a result of the invasion, Platte and Clay counties are under a state and federal quarantine, which means that wood products such as firewood can not be transported from those two counties to other areas as a way to help prevent the spread of the bugs. Gladstone City Gardener Beth Houlihan said there have been no known sightings of the emerald ash borer in town. “When the story broke this past summer that the EAB had been found in Platte County, I worked closely with the owner of the company that had discovered the pest, and also with the (U.S. Department of Agriculture) located here in Gladstone,” Houlihan said. “The USDA sent out a special force team to inspect the ash trees included in the city’s inventory. They found no issues with EAB.” Because Gladstone is included in the quarantine, Houliahan said residents could continue to bring yard waste and brush to the to the disposal site at Public Works, 4000 NE 76th St., for a fee. “At that location, Missouri Organic shreds and treats the waste to eliminate the pest and any associated threat,” said Richard King, the city’s public information officer. “Missouri Organic is certified and fully trained for this operation.” As a result of the quarantine, Kansas City’s leaf and brush drop-off site at 1815 N. Chouteau Trafficway will not accept leaf and brush from Clay and Platte county residents after Jan. 12. Kevin LaPointe, city forester for the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department, said the emerald ash borer had been confirmed near 64th Street and Interstate 29, and between Parkville and

BUG PROBLEM? The following are some the symptoms of an emerald ash borer infestation: ■ Sparse leaves or branches dying in the upper part of the tree. ■ New sprouts on the roots or lower trunk. ■ Three- to five-inch vertical splits in the bark. ■ Winding, S-shaped tunnels just under the bark. ■ White- or cream-colored larvae under the bark. ■ Eighth-inch D-shaped holes on the bark. ■ Increased woodpecker activity on the tree.

She said ash trees are popular to plant along public streets and in residential as well as commercial areas. “On Gladstone’s public lands, we have around 101 ash trees in our canopy of over 900 trees throughout our parks and public lands in Gladstone,” Houlihan said. “That translates to Weatherby Lake. LaPointe said ash trees provide shade and are used in numerous wood products such as kitchen cabinets and baseball bats. He said ash trees also were more drought tolerant than many other species of local trees. “They are wonderful trees; they’re strong, light,” he said. “According to a survey conducted by MARC two years ago, there are an estimated 4.6 million ash trees in the nine-county metropolitan area.” He said the upper lake states had lost hundreds of millions of ash trees to the destructive emerald ash borer. He said there are several native beetles that also attack ash trees but are not as destructive as the Asian bugs. LaPointe said ash trees become infested when adult beetles lay eggs on the bark of the tree, which hatch into larvae that bore into the tree, disrupting the water and nutrient flow, eventually killing the tree. The beetle emerges in the spring through D-shaped holes in the bark. “The EAB is difficult to spot, as it attacks trees from the top down, and it is typical that by the time the damage is discovered, the tree is too far gone,” Houlihan said.

St. Joseph News-Press on flu vaccine:

We take little comfort in knowing a relatively high number of Americans — one third — already have been vaccinated against the flu. In brief, we wish the number were double that. We don’t want to get sick. And we sure don’t want the health of our loved ones put at risk — either through their own inaction or that of someone else who becomes a carrier of the flu because they didn’t

get the vaccine. The risks are real. An estimated 24,000 people nationwide — an average of 480 per state — die from the flu each year. The last time the flu season started this early was nine years ago, and that winter the toll was 48,000 deaths. Death is the worst outcome, but thousands more will experience wrenching illness including vomiting, diarrhea, pneumonia and other severe complications. Perhaps a few million will be afflicted with

fever, cough, runny nose, head and body aches, and fatigue. Those who suffer the most severe illnesses by and large are the frail elderly, those with weakened immune systems and young children. These are the people among us who are least able to fend for themselves; we should all care deeply for their well-being, and work to ensure it. The No. 1 step in this regard is to get the flu vaccine, and to encourage family, friends and cowork-

ers to do likewise. There is still time and it is widely available at pharmacies and doctors’ offices; some insurance plans cover the full cost. Also, throughout the winter flu season — which officially has started — each of us can continue to take proactive steps to limit exposure and transmission of the disease. Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. Avoid touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your mouth, eyes or nose.

Pond’s Picks “Brave” Blu-ray Combo Pack ($39.99)

This fetching Disney-Pixar collaboration about a sassy teenage maiden and her magical adventure in the ancient Highlands of Scotland became the No. 1 animated box-office hit of 2012. Merida has a head of flaming red hair, a spirit that can’t be tamed, and a skill with the bow and arrow that comes in handy when she accidentally unleashes a curse on her clan. Filled with heart and humor (particularly the antics of Merida’s three prankish little brothers, a gathering of brawling Scots, and the trio of unsuitable suitors who come to court her), it comes to Blu-ray with a generous number of ty of Scotland into the bonus features, including animated charms of the inside looks at how the movie. KC Me t ro All-District Bands and O rchestras On Nov. 3, instrumental music students from across the Kansas City Metro area came together at Staley High School to audition for placement in one of the Kansas City Metro All-District bands and orchestras. The All-District Band and All-District Honorable Mention Band will perform their concerts Saturday, Dec. 15, at Park Hill High School at 7 p.m. The All-District Orchestras will perform their concerts Saturday, Jan. 12, at William Chrisman High School at 2 p.m. The All-District Jazz Band and All-District Middle School Band performed their concerts Saturday, Dec. 8. Listed are the local students selected for the bands and orchestras. Project starts with Synergy, stretches to S.D. When Maple Park Middle School teacher Jacqueline Wilson and her National Junior Honor Society students decided to collect books as a community service project, they had no idea how far their “Reading is Fun” project would go. Choosing a community service project each year is part of holding membership in the National Junior Honor Society at Maple Park. This year the students collected books for Synergy House, filling a pickup with the donations. Maple Park collected a total of 1,600 books for youngsters who will each receive a donated book when they cross the threshold of Synergy House. For many of the youth, the donated book will be among the few possessions they carry. Teachers from Antioch Middle and Chapel Hill Elementary schools also contributed to the project. Robin Shanberg Winner, executive director of Synergy House, thanked students for the books, saying that the most the organization receives in a single donation is usually around 100 to 200 books. This was the largest donation of any kind Syn-

A lesson in off-the-cuff thinking

St. Charles Catholic School graduate John Mulvey teaches eighth-graders at his alma mater about improv during a weeklong workshop. Mulvey, a teacher for Theatre for Young America, hopes to get students to tap into the creative side of their brains and put their imaginations to the test. Students were given the task of “thinking on their feet.” By working in groups, the students also learned teamwork and problem solving in each of the improv scenarios. Several eighth-grade students are pictured during a “hitchhiker” scenario. Pictured are eighth-graders Emily Day, Erin Giffen and Joe Brady during a hitchhiker senario with Mulvey.
