Navy Seaman Recruit Samuel D. Adams, son of Brenda L. and Christopher P. Adams of Kansas City, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Adams completed a variety of training, including classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. Adams is a 2012 graduate of Winnetonka High School.

It all adds up for Davidson students

Davidson Elementary School students recently participated in a PTA Math-a-Thon. The teachers, staff and PTA kicked off the contest with a pep assembly themed “It all adds up, up and up.� The students collected pledges for a 20-problem math test that they took at school that week. Most students were pledged per problems solved correctly. The proceeds went directly to the school’s PTA, and the students won prizes for raising money. The top earner was first-grader Canaan Novero, who collected $335. Davidson PTA president Amy Corlew said, “We collected over $3,300 for our PTA, and these funds will be used to pay for all of our students at Davidson to go on a field trip or two this year at no cost to them. The funds will also go towards class assemblies and our annual field day in the spring�. The school’s principal, Dr. Leah Martisko, said she was grateful for all that the PTA does for the school community. “We are thrilled with the success of our PTA’s Math-a-Thon this year. We appreciate all that our PTA does for our students, and these funds will allow many new opportunities for our students,� Martisko said.

School Notes Jessi Chen of Gladstone performed in a national high school honor band as part of Musical Arts Day on Oct. 26 on the Concordia University campus in

Nebraska. The honor ensembles are made up of 149 students selected by audition. These students spend six hours in

rehearsal during Musical Arts Day to learn music and prepare for the evening concert. Members of the University Chamber Choir and University

Symphonic Band serve as section leaders for the honor groups, helping with rehearsals and performing with the groups at the concert.

Customizing community health Clay County Public Health Center to develop individual health improvement plans for cities

By Ryne Dittmer Beginning in 2013, the Clay County Public Health Center will take a new approach to influencing the health of county residents through its Community Health Improvement Plan. Next year will mark the first time the center will seek to create CHIP plans for individual communities as opposed to the countywide initiatives of years past. “This was a very conscious decision by us because it is not the road most traveled,” Gary Zaborac, Clay County Public Health Center director, said. “There are 222,000 people in Clay County. Trying to develop a one-size-fitsall CHIP didn’t make sense for us. We decided the best approach is to create individual health improvement plans for each community.” The mini-CHIPS, as Zaborac and his team have dubbed the projects, will have an overall goal of reducing chronic disease rates in the county for the targeted areas of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, accident and non-intentional injuries, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Each mini-CHIP will be tailored to address the individual communities’ specific health needs and systems of support. “Different communities

Health center adopts strategic plan The Clay County Public Health Center adopted a new three-year strategic plan on Nov. 15. “The plan adopted outlines the strategy and action items that will allow us to empower Clay County communities to lead healthy lives,” Gary Zaborac, the center’s director, said. “I think the county is going to be very pleased with our efforts going forward.” The full strategic plan is available at www.clayhealth.com under the heading “Recent Health News & Alerts.”

We’ve got to target our approach around that system and mobilize those partnerships,” Zaborac said. “What we’re trying to do is empower each community to develop programs and services to lead healthy lives,” The health center will begin the process by creating community health profiles through an evaluation of the effectiveness, accessibility and quality of communities’ personal health services. These profiles will then be presented to the various communities as an introduction to the CHIP development. “In January we’ll begin to reach out to all the communities. We want to inform and educate the communities on what the issues are,” Zaborac said. The center hopes the pre-

sentations will encourage the county’s communities to join the project. “We want the communities to engage and participate as an active and willing partner. This is all about collaborative partnerships and relationships,” Zaborac said. “We feel pretty confident that people will agree and want to improve the health of their communities.” Communities that express interest will then work with the health center staff to create the personalized CHIP. The center aims implement the first community-based CHIP in 2014. “This is the culmination of a lot of work over the last three to four years,” Zaborac said. What it has done is created the beginning of where we need to go as an organization and a community.”

’Tis the season to tell massive lies to your kids Unfortunately, most co-conspirators of the Santa scam are decidedly small time, mom-and-pop operations and seem to have a lot of trouble keeping their stories straight between households.

Yes, even in the most open-minded, truth-embracing households, it’s common practice for parents to annually impersonate an obese saint who has no tolerance for shouting, crying or pouting. But it seems Santa is conspicuously silent about lying. If you’re a parent, you know exactly what your job is at Christmas: to buy and lie. Your task is to pass down the same whoppers your parents told you. Of course, you technically don’t have to lie, but what are your options, really? You could be one of those rare, super-PC parents who decide to empower your children with the truth, also known as “the least popular parent on the block.� Here are some tips for more effective deception:

Your child might ask, “Why did Santa’s beard fall off while I was talking to him?� At first you might want to panic, but don’t. This one’s easy; just rely on the time-tested “helper explanation.� Tell your children that this isn’t the real Santa, but a local helper who dresses up as his likeness because Santa can’t be everywhere at once.

Individualize the myth

Another important trick is to individualize your family’s version of the myth. Unfortunately, most co-conspirators of the Santa scam are decidedly small time, mom-and-pop operations and seem to have a lot of trouble keeping their stories straight between households. Your kids are going to come home from school saying, “At Braden’s house, the reindeer leave a note,� or “At Sophia’s house, Santa wraps the presents.� Explain to your kids that since he is so amazing and omniscient, Santa treats

‘Show and tell’ session shared by history buffs Human hair fob, round rocks, stereoscope slides brought to museum meeting A variety of items, experiences and memories were shared recently by members of the Clay County Museum and Historical Society Study Group. In its first “show and tell� session, the group shared such items as Missouri round rocks, political campaign buttons, an heirloom watch fob made of human hair, an original widow’s compensation document for the War of 1812, a piece of linoleum from 1889 found in the Stone-Yancey House during renovation, a photo of a Thomas Hart Benton painting, stereoscopes, a Mozarkite rock, and detachable men’s collars and cuffs from the early 1900s. Livingston (E.L.) Morse and Margaret Bessie Hart, experiences using 19th century utensils to grind coffee and churn butter, and memories of the Big Shoal one-room school house. Sharing diverse items, experiences and memories lead the group to interesting conversations and increased knowledge about each other and their shared history. Little-known facts brought to the group’s attention included those concerning Missouri round rocks. Several such rocks gathered from a meteor crater created millions of years ago in an 11-mile area between Osceola and Weubleau were shared by Ralph Brant, as well as a shiny purple rock, the Mozarkite, the state rock of Missouri. Other items shared included the early predecessor to the slide

Registration is now open for the Feb. 9 ACT college and career readiness exam. Students who want to take the exam must register by Friday, Jan. 11. Students can register online at www.actstudent.org or by mail. Paper registration forms can be obtained from school counselors’ offices or by requesting a registration packet from ACT. The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It measures what students have learned in school and what they need
