iPad pilot expands Spencer Fields named technology to middle schools Northlander of the Year Spencer Fields, manager of the Kansas City office in Mercer, was named the 2012 Northlander of the Year at the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet Jan. 19. His wife, close friends, supporters, as well as chamber members accompanied Fields to celebrate his award during the banquet at Argosy Casino Hotel & Spa. The Northlander of the Year award is given annually to recognize an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the betterment of the Northland. Fields has served the Northland in a variety of ways, including chairmanship on the NRCC Board of Directors to lead the development of a strategic plan in the 2000s, according to a press release. The chamber was not the only volunteer organization he helped with his human resources and financial background. He served on the Board of Education for North Kansas City Schools as president for four out of the 12 years he was active. Fields also has been a long-term member and chairman of the North Kansas City Schools Education Foundation, helping launch its March to a Million campaign goal in 2011. His commitment to help improve the Northland education system for the youth, including his two children, has created a direction of innovation in the district, the release states. In addition, Fields served for the Northland Health Care Access Board for many years, helping expand many of its programs to help patients in the area. Fields’ involvement outside of his day job demonstrates how much one man
expand this middle school technology program in the future. Those teachers selected to participate volunteered for the program nearly a year ago and were chosen by their building principals as ideal candidates for the iPad pilot. These teachers represent many content areas and are participating in a variety of professional development opportunities to ensure student success with the new device. More than 1,730 middle
school students are projected to participate in the pilot program. Students will be taught expectations for appropriate use of the technology and tips for the care of the iPad mini. The iPad mini is for classroom use and will not go home with students. The program is set to begin in late February with a phased-in rollout at each school, one building at a time. — North Kansas City Schools

Harvest Ball Society benefits 28 charities
At its Jan. 22 annual meeting, the Harvest Ball Society granted more than $530,000 to charities that serve the Northland. Twenty-eight Northland not-for-profits received checks from 2012 HBS President Roswitha Schaffer at the home of Patty and Charles Garney, according to a press release. A special impact grant was given to Harvesters – the Community Food Network to support the Northland Childhood Hunger Initiative that aids the BackSnack program in Northland schools. Schaffer thanked the membership for its yearlong work in raising the funds that make the grants possible. Since its founding in 1987, HBS has given more than $6 million to
more than 60 charities. Grants are made possible by the corporate and individual benefactors that support the organization through its annual fundraisers, the Adorn Style Show and Brunch, and the Harvest Ball. Under the leadership of 2013 HBS President Jerri Landsberg, this year’s Adorn will be on Saturday, Sept.7, and the Harvest Ball on Saturday, Nov. 23. Beneficiaries of the 2012 style show and ball are: Alphapointe Association for the Blind, Angel Flight Central, Assistance League of Kansas City, Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics/ Children’s Mercy Northland, Clay County Clothes Closet, Concerned Care, Cornerstones of Care, The
Family Conservancy, Harvesters – The Community Food Network, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, HOPE.wrx, Liberty Meals on Wheels, Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries, Miles of Smiles, Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault, NorthCare Hospice & Palliative Care, Northland Assistance Center, Northland Christmas Store, Northland Early Education Center, Northland Health Care Access, Northland Meals on Wheels, Platte Senior Services, Salvation Army Northland & Excelsior Springs, Shepherd’s Center of the Northland, Southern Platte Emergency Assistance Center, Triality, Tri-County Mental Health Services and Women’s Employment Network.

Do you know someone who has made a positive difference in the community? Someone who has played an active role in making the Northland a great place to live and work? Someone deserving of recognition? This year’s Favorite Northlander will be selected in a new way in the 2013 Best of the Northland readers’ choice contest. The Favorite Northlander will be picked by readers from four nominees. To nominate your Favorite Northlander from Clay or Platte county, submit a short essay of up to 300 words detailing why you think this person should be recognized. Please include the nominee’s name and city of residence as well as information about the nominee’s community involvement. The combined staff of the Liberty Tribune, Gladstone Dispatch and The Kearney Courier will select four finalists from among these reader-nominated individuals to appear on the ballot, which will be available online at www. BestoftheNorthland.net and in the newspapers every week in April. A short bio of each finalist will be included on the ballot. The Favorite Northlander and all finalists will be recognized at the annual Best of the Northland awards reception in July.
