More than Valentine’s Day Gladstone couple celebrates Feb. 14 wedding anniversary By Nancy Hull Rigdon This Valentine’s Day, Kevin Plemmons will give his wife, Casey Plemmons, two cards. One for Valentine’s Day, the other for their wedding anniversary. His wife, however, will give him only an anniversary card. Inside, she’ll write, “Happy Valentine’s Day.” “I always laugh and say, ‘Why do you give me two cards? You don’t have to do that.’ And he says, ‘But there are two separate occasions,’” Casey Plemmons said. Such is the life of a couple whose wedding anniversary falls on Feb. 14. This year, the Gladstone couple is celebrating eight years. They met in 2004 when they lived near Lake of the Ozarks. She worked at a diner in Sunrise Beach. He was a police officer for the city of Sunrise Beach. When she got off work at night, he often sat in his patrol car on the side of the road by the restaurant. As she drove off, she typically stopped to visit. She had a crush on him from the start, and as she later learned, his parking spot was a strategic move to spend time with her. During a trip to Mexico in August 2004,

Valentine’s Day has a double meaning for Kevin and Casey Plemmons of Gladstone, whose wedding anniversary is Feb. 14.
they learned Casey was pregnant. They knew they wanted to spend their lives together and picked out rings soon after. With an April due date, they settled on a Valentine’s Day wedding. The ceremony was small and simple — just what they wanted. They married in a church in Brumley, where Kevin was raised. Aside from the minister, four family members attended — the couple’s mothers and Kevin’s two daughters, ages 4 and 12 at the time. During the ceremony, the oldest daughter hit “play” on Martina McBride’s “My Valentine.” The song includes the lyrics, “I’ve dreamed of this a thousand times before. In my dreams, I couldn’t love you more. I will give you my heart until the end of time. You’re all I need. My love, my Valentine.” Exactly two months following their wedding, Casey gave birth to their daughter, Stephanie. In 2010, they moved to Gladstone to be close to Casey’s family. Typically, they celebrate their anniversary with an evening away. This year, they were thinking about escaping to a downtown Kansas City hotel. “We always try and do something, just the two of us, that makes it like more than just Valentine’s Day,” Casey Plemmons said. A wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day, she said, certainly has its upside. “My husband has never forgotten our anniversary. I’m thankful for that,” she said with a laugh.

4 Area Dentists Serve Families In Need in the Northland
February 2,2013 With over 150 families served, it’s done as a duty to help. Helping the families and the future of our community with dental care is something that has become near and dear to Dr. Robert G. Marx. Everyone knows it is important to take care of their teeth, but it is especially important in childhood. When life makes getting treatment difficult, the need doesn’t stop. That is why Dr. Marx began this event some 25 years ago. Since that first year in 1989, the office has seen well over 2,400 children on Have A Heart Day. Today, the need has never been greater. More and more families need help. Northland Dentist’s Robert G Marx and Douglas Arjes were joined by Jared Gerhardt of Gerhardt Dental in Parkville and Dr. Jesse Jackson of Jackson Family Dental in Liberty to offer the 25th Annual Have A Heart Day to the children from the KC Northland area on Saturday the 2nd of February. Dr. Marx’s first year for Have A Heart Day was in 1989 when he began with a vision of helping children in need and has fostered the growth of the day each year since. Dr. Arjes , Dr. Gerhardt & Dr. Jackson joined Dr. Marx this year to help meet the demand that these economic times have created. This is the second year Dr. Gerhardt had joined Dr. Marx in this effort. We also had the help of three dental students from UMKC Dental School, one of them Dr. Marx’s daughter Emily. This is a special day providing free cleanings, x-rays and exams for children who have been unable to receive dental care through no fault of their own. There was lots of fun entertainment provided for the children with KC Wolf of the Kansas City Chiefs, Pinky Lee the Clown and goody bags for all! This is only the beginning of Dr. Marx helping the children that were seen in his office. Many of the children required dental treatment for decay and Dr. Marx & his staff have scheduled all these children back to get these problems handled at little or no cost to the parents for those who need this help. Dr. Marx explains, “I love my community and my city. I have lived here my whole life. I like looking into the future and in many ways I feel kids are it!” Dr. Marx added, “I am very grateful to Dr. Gerhardt and his staff and Dr. Jackson and his staff for stepping up another notch and joining with us to provide this greatly needed service at their offices. I know it was an exciting day for them too and we look forward to a great future in Kansas City with this event.” Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Dental Supplies for the day were provided by Goetze Dental. Each child received a bag with
a book in it provided by Mid-Continent Public Library, we filled the bag with additional items provided by various contributors. AT&T donated sling bags , toothpaste & a toothbrush provided by Colgate Pharmaceuticals and various other wonderful gift certificates &/or items provided by the following merchants; Kansas City Chiefs, HyVee on Englewood, The Liberty Home Depot and Sam’s Club on North Oak. The parents each got a carnation provided by Gladstone Flowers for doing their part in bringing in their children. Rich Corona provided printing of fliers that were distributed throughout the Northland. KMBC News came out to do an interview with parents for the evening news. The North Kansas City, Liberty and Park Hill School Districts all participated once again and many of the local pre-schools and community programs were contacted as well. Contributions total tens of thousands of dollars each year in goods, promotion and services provided by Dr. Marx and supportive businesses and organizations for the event. “It’s not about the money, it’s about one’s personal duty to help and that’s what makes it special. The response is always incredible and the joy of that one day is priceless,” says Dr. Marx. He adds, “I can’t cure cancer or make the world a safer place, but I can fix children’s teeth. I like doing that a lot. The children we see are all great kids and they deserve our support and I’m glad I can help out.” Dr. Marx explains, “I think dentistry is very important to our overall health & happiness. Each experience at a dental office can affect one’s whole view on dentistry over a lifetime. We started this program so we can have an impact on our kids and ultimately our city.” When asked what Have A Heart Day means to him, he replied “You hear a lot of discussion sometimes from people wanting to do something and we actually do something to make an impact to change lives.” Dr. Marx adds “It takes a real effort to go from just an idea and bring it into action and I am grateful for the many volunteers and organizations who give us direct support year after year in making this happen.” February is designated as the National Children’s Dental Health Month. Have A Heart Day was named because it connected with the Valentine’s Day theme and Dental Health month. Dr. Marx and his staff are continually involved in many community programs including speaking with children about dental care and visiting retirement communities for dental screenings. As a Dentist for over 30 years at the same location right here in Gladstone, Dr. Marx has grown his practice to include a staff of 25 and expanded several
times over the years. “The more we grow, the more responsibility we have to help our community,” says Dr. Marx. “The families are always so appreciative, and the kids are always terrific! The sense of satisfaction I get is difficult to express. But it is wonderful! It is very fulfilling. My staff looks forward to Have A Heart Day every year. We have as much fun as the children,” says Dr. Marx. Families at the margins have always been at risk, but now it is not just the less fortunate families that are struggling. There is a group of underserved families in this community that Dr. Marx has reached out to. These parents all showed much gratitude for this service as they were able to get their children the dental care they needed. A mother of a young child was extremely grateful as the family is unable to afford dental care; she stated “a program like this is very helpful to our family.” Another parent, a foster mother, heard about our program later in the day and called to see about getting two of her foster children in, we were able to see them and this mom was very grateful as she had found out earlier in the week that the dentist she had the children scheduled with next month had gone out of business. There were 15-20 children that were seen that had dire immediate dental problems that Dr. Marx will bring back for the much-needed treatment in the coming days and weeks. Dr. Marx has also enlisted the help of his fellow dental professionals that will be helping some of the children as well. Some of the children needing additional help will be seen by dental students at UMKC Dental School, including Dr. Marx’s daughter Emily who is in her 3rd year of Dental School. Dr. Marx continues, “That is why I want other dentists to join with us in meeting this challenge. We already receive an extraordinary level of cooperation and assistance but the level of need keeps rising. Our volunteers and donors make all the difference. We are truly fortunate to have so many friends, but we need more health-care providers to join with us.”

Ultimate Frisbee coming soon The city of Gladstone is proud to offer its first adult league for Ultimate Frisbee this year. The sport was created in the summer of 1968, when the founders experimented with rules while playing with a Frisbee at Columbia High School. It expanded to colleges around the northeast and around the country and gained enough popularity that unofficial national championships were held in the mid- to late 1970s. The Ultimate Players Association was formed in 1979 to govern the sport in the United States. Since that time, the UPA has grown by leaps and bounds, introducing college, women’s, mixed, masters and youth divisions, becoming one of
The uniform requirements for this league are matching shirts, which will be included in the team entry fee of $300. Registration will be open Monday, March 4, to Friday, May 3, or until the league is full. Managers will be required to attend a mandatory rules meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Gladstone City Hall. At that time schedules and rules will be distributed and discussed. Online registration is available at www.activityreg.com. Register in person or at Parks & Recreation inside Gladstone City Hall or the Gladstone Community Center. TAURUS — Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, although you may not be able to see into the future, you can plan for what may happen in the next few days. Now is the perfect time to check in with friends. GEMINI — May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, get all of your work ducks in a row because you want to ensure you are up for the next promotion or pay increase. Now could be the time to make work your top priority. CANCER — Jun 22/Jul 22 You may find that you have an easy time of reading people this week, Cancer. Use this trait to your advantage to find out how certain people feel about your new ideas. LEO — Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, don’t get too excited when things seem out of whack this week. Keep calm and find out how you can set things on the right course. Lead by example, and others will follow. VIRGO — Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, try not to participate in any new activities this week. You are already over-extended. Clear your to-do lists before you take on any other responsibilities. Oakhill middle school students give community the gift of literacy
The Middle School Student Council at Oakhill Day School has embraced a service project started by Todd Bol of Wisconsin in 2009 to offer free books to the community. The private school in Gladstone had an opening ceremony for its Little Free Library on Feb. 6. “We chose the Little Free Library as our project because it is a unique way to increase literacy. It benefits not just our school, but the community,” said Holland Gugler, Student Council president. The middle school students, with the assistance of Student Council sponsor Amy Ganaden and library coordinator Kristen Sloan, have spent the past two months gathering books to include in the Little Free Library, and each Student Council representative played a role in getting the Little Free Library Project off the ground. Seventh-grader Trent Neutgens was charged with converting what was originally a school houseshaped mailbox into the group’s Little Free Library. “At a STUCO meeting, Mrs. Ganaden asked if anyone would know how to convert the mailbox. I eagerly volunteered,” Trent said. “It wasn’t a problem, and it didn’t take much time. I was happy to do it.”
