County: Consultant tasked with overseeing creation of alliance for economic development Continued from Page A1 retention, business attraction and business expansion, Martinette said. “I will be working with our partners in the Kansas City Economic Development Corporation, Kansas City Area Economic Development Council and the local community’s economic development professionals to attract new business, keep the ones we have and help the ones we have expand. As part of his role, Martinette will oversee the creation of the Clay County Economic Development Alliance, a group aimed at assisting county communities with business and jobgrowth efforts at no cost to the participating parties. “The alliance will be vigorously involved in job retention and doing everything they can so businesses see Clay County is the best place to conduct business, Eastern Commissioner Luann Ridgeway said. “It’s all about jobs and bringing more jobs to Clay County. To form the alliance, Martinette will work with an advisory group that he said currently includes representation from Kansas City Power & Light among other county economic professionals. “Once we get that set, it will transfer over to a new board of directors. It will be small and action-oriented, Martinette said. As the alliance continues to form and develop a business plan, Martinette and the county commissioners have taken to spreading the word about the new group to the cities of Clay County. “When we get this rolled out, people will be pleased, but I think they are waiting to see the formal roll-out, Mason said. Not all are on board with the changes. The commissioners’ new plans for economic development have raised concerns from some county cities. “This is a major change in how Clay County does business, Kearney City Administrator Jim Eldridge said. Eldridge said Mason had called Kearney Mayor Bill Dane to ask Kearney to join in an EDC alliance she was forming with the cities. At the same time, Eldridge took a call from Clay County EDC Executive Director Jim Hampton asking for Kearney’s continued support in that organization. “We do not choose sides, Eldridge said. Eldridge said the city of Kearney annually contributes to the Clay County EDC, which he said he considered a successful organization. Liberty Mayor Greg Canuteson said he saw no benefit to the Clay County Commission creating another economic development organization. The city of Liberty helps to financially support the Liberty Economic Development Corporation, a public/private partnership that works to attract new businesses and retain existing businesses in Liberty. “The last four years have been tremendously successful for economic development in Liberty, and we see no benefit to an additional economic development organization, Canuteson said. “We feel that the city of Liberty has

In appreciation of snow-removal crews Well, Gladstone’s finest has done it again. I would like to thank the men and/or women who braved the hills driving the snow plows and spreading sand and ice melt after the Feb. 21 snowfall. I know they started on the main streets to make them as safe as possible to drive on. And, true to form, they did residential streets, too. I hope those living in Gladstone appreciate their dedication to keeping us mobile to go to our jobs, run errands, etc. So thank you, drivers, for a job well done. God bless you. planting a tree. Missouri’s official observance of Arbor Day began in 1887 when the legislature set aside a day in early April to encourage residents to appreciate and plant trees. This tree-planting celebration carries on a more than 100year tradition that began in Nebraska in 1872 and was developed by Julius Sterling Morton.

Do you know someone who has made a positive difference in the community? Someone who has played an active role in making the Northland a great place to live and work? Someone deserving of recognition? This year’s Favorite Northlander will be selected in a new way in the 2013 Best of the Northland readers’ choice contest. The Favorite Northlander will be picked by readers from four nominees. To nominate your Favorite Northlander from Clay or Platte county, submit a short essay of up to 300 words detailing why you think this person should be recognized. Please include the nominee’s name and city of residence as well as information about the nominee’s community involvement. The combined staff of the Liberty Tribune, Gladstone Dispatch and The Kearney Courier will select four finalists from among these reader-nominated individuals to appear on the ballot, which will be available online at www. BestoftheNorthland.net and in the newspapers every week in April. A short bio of each finalist will be included on the ballot.
