News in Brief

Fairview feeds circle of love with food drive Visitors and members of Fairview Christian Church in Gladstone recently worked together to collect canned goods to circle the sanctuary with love for those in need. A total of 1,500 items with an estimated combined value of $1,500 were donated. Cans of fruits, meats, vegetables, soup and other items collected will be taken to the food bank at Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries to distribute to those in need. Dr. Clarence Tucker, who helped to initiate this food drive, said, “Small acts of kindness put together have the power to meet the demands of need. If we work with God together, we can do anything. Evon Clevenger guided more than a dozen volunteers to sort and package the food. “It is amazing to witness the power of the spirit working in the generosity of people’s hearts, Clevenger said. “We hope the works of everyone’s hands and the tugs of everyone’s hearts will make a difference for God’s children everywhere. This effort to gather food is a part of an ongoing ministry of Fairview Christian Church to provide boxes filled with a variety of food for meals to Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries for distribution.

A8 Gladstone Dispatch

Thursday, March 7, 2013 Eric and Nancy Schneider opened Headrush Roasters Coffee & Tea more than two months ago in the former LC’s Hamburgers Etc. building at 7108 N. Oak Trafficway in Gladstone. The Schneiders, who live in Gladstone, considered 16 properties throughout the Kansas City area and were drawn to their chosen location in part because it had a drive-thru. They aim to bring an urban feel to the suburbs with the design of the seating area.

headrush: Couple strive to create community destination Continued from Page A1 The shop combines Eric’s passion for coffee and Nancy’s passion for tea. Eric, who graduated from Park Hill High School and William Jewell College, daydreamed about opening an independent, gourmet coffee shop while working in commercial insurance for 25 years. Nancy grew up in Yunnan, China — believed to be the birthplace of tea — and longed for the tea comforts of home. A couple of years ago, Eric quit his job while

Nancy continued to work as a software engineer, and they pulled the trigger. They were confident there was strong demand for quality coffee but were unsure how tea would be received. “We joked that if it didn’t work out, Nancy could have a big, private tea collection at home,” Eric said. They’ve been taken aback by the popularity of tea. Turns out, many couples are like them in that one prefers coffee, while the other prefers tea. Customers benefit from

the couple’s love for their business, the Schneiders think. “When you have so much pride and passion and gratification in what you do, that really elevates your product,” Nancy said. “We are putting our heart and soul into this.” Ultimately, they want the shop to be known as a key part of the community. “We want this to be a neighborhood place, somewhere where you go to see your friends and meet new ones,” Nancy said.

You decide... Who is your Favorite

Northlander? ? ? Do you know someone who has made a positive difference in the community? Someone who has played an active role in making the Northland a great place to live and work? Someone deserving of recognition? This year’s Favorite Northlander will be selected in a new way in the 2013 Best of the Northland readers’ choice contest. The Favorite Northlander will be picked by readers from four nominees. To nominate your Favorite Northlander from Clay or Platte county, submit a short essay of up to 300 words detailing why you think this person should be recognized. Please include the nominee’s name and city of residence as well as information about the nominee’s community involvement. The combined staff of the Liberty Tribune, Gladstone Dispatch and The Kearney Courier will select four finalists from among these reader-nominated individuals to appear on the ballot, which will be available online at www. BestoftheNorthland.net and in the newspapers every week in April. A short bio of each finalist will be included on the ballot. The Favorite Northlander and all finalists will be recognized at the annual Best of the Northland awards reception in July.
