Theater career blossoms with ‘Fertilizer’ High school playwright to stage first full-length show April 4, 5 By Amy Neal
the performance was over, it received a standing ovation, Baldwin said. After that, he said Rieger “got the bug and wanted to write more. “It can change people’s perception. After that moment, she was like, ‘Oh man, wow,’ he said of the audience response. Rieger admits she went into the one-act assignment “kicking and screaming because she thought it took out a layer of interpretation being both playwright and director. But as scary and vulnerable a process as it was, the feeling of having and conveying a message took hold of her, she said. And it didn’t hurt that the show was well received. “The audience was very kind and generous, she said. At the end of that school year, Rieger told Baldwin she wanted to write a fulllength play. This past fall, she enrolled in an independent study theater class with that goal in mind. Baldwin had Rieger read plays written in different genres and periods before starting on her own script.
Aggie Rieger has been cultivating her theater skills for the past four years at Oak Park High School. The next step is bringing “Fertilizer to the Little Theatre stage Thursday and Friday, April 4 and 5. The show is the school’s first-ever full-length student-written and -directed production — probably. “If it happened, there’s no preservation or memory of it, the senior said after consulting old yearbooks and other resources. So Rieger and a cast and crew of her peers are preparing to make school history. “I set out to write a show about self-sabotage, Rieger said. A news report provided some of the inspiration for what she calls a light-hearted drama and insists is not a comedy. “It is basically all a metaphor about a family literally blossoming after going through a lot of troubles, said cast member Maddie Marx. The senior plays Julie Wither, the aunt. The seed for Rieger’s play was first planted after an assignment in one of theater teacher Jeff Baldwin’s Working classes her junior year behind the scenes Rieger became involved required her to write and direct a one-act play. When with theater in her fresh-

a production prepared her to cast and direct her own play, Baldwin said. “She was mentored into that leadership role,â€? he said, adding, “I think if she didn’t have a good rapport with her peers, she wouldn’t have a cast. They wouldn’t have auditioned.â€? A lesson in local history I read the article regarding the former Dolce’s property in the March 14 paper. I enjoyed the article and am glad to see someone take the property and value its history. I did want to mention that the list of former articles that were quoted has a discrepancy. The first two articles mentioned from 1938 and 1949 are not about this house. They are about the Williams
house located across and just west on Barry Road. As you discovered, the Williams and Craig families were related through marriage. Louisa Craig was formerly Louisa Williams, wife of John Williams. The Williams house is currently vacant and in disrepair. It is on the market as commercial property. It is interesting that there is a log cabin encapsulated inside the Williams house. The Williams/Craig family cemetery is also still intact

Unfortunately, the Williams house will more than likely soon be gone, as the current owners do not appear to have an interest in preserving it and I doubt any potential buyer will, either, since it is being marketed as commercial property.

Play: Students design T-shirt, Superintendent honored by school administrators association craft set for performance By Press Release
Continued from Page A1 the actors were in the unique position of not being influenced by previous interpretations of the characters. “It’s really a blank canvas when it comes to character development,” Crump said. The student playwright and director said she tries to separate what she wrote and what the actors bring to their characters. She is happy to share the spotlight with the other students who are part of the production. T-shirts promoting the show were designed by junior Hannah Williams, who also plays Nicole, and a stage craft class is building an abstract set to turn the intimate Little Theatre into a lush garden.

Between April’s performance and her graduation in May, Rieger anticipates reading more plays, as well as a fair amount of writing, reflection and analysis. “It’s hard to think about what I’m doing next when this is my world,” she said. She plans to go off to college in the fall. She has “some exciting choices” but hasn’t made up her mind on a school or major. But she does plan to sign up for the student newspaper, get involved with the theater program and join student government as soon as she can. For now, she is content to share her senior-year opus. It was written by a high schooler, but it wasn’t written specifically for this age group. “It’s not a cliché high school script,” Rieger said. “It’s about a community. It’s for the community. I’d like the community the come and be a part of this.” Managing Editor Amy Neal can be reached at 389-6629 or amy.neal@npgco.com.
“It comes down to whether the audience gets it. The play is written to get them to talk to each other about these themes. If they come out and they say ... ‘Man, that really made me think. What would you have done?’ then mission accomplished.” Aggie Rieger, Oak Park High School senior

Showtime Arguably, writing and directing a full-length play at age 17 is a significant accomplishment in and of itself. Rieger said she will measure the success of the performances by the audience, regardless of the size of the crowd. “It comes down to whether the audience gets it,” she said. “The play is written to get them to talk to each other about these themes. If they come out and they say, ‘I know someone (aggressive) like that,’ … or ‘Man, that really made me think. What would you have done?’ then mission accomplished.” Junior Brooke Rhoads, stage manager and publicity manager for “Fertilizer,” is confident the audience will be able to connect with the play. “They are going to have a character they relate to,” Rhoads said. The play touches on universal themes like being lonely or forgotten but is not based on Rieger’s life. “There’s no character in the play who is someone I know,” she said.
