Fanfare on the Square

Luna Breeze brought a variety of acts to Fanfare on the Square during the opening weekend of the Linden Square amphitheater at 70th and North Cherry Streets in Gladstone. Beatles tribute band Liverpool played to a crowd of about 800 after a dedication ceremony for Linden Square on Friday, April 5. Free performances at the outdoor venue continued through the weekend, with high school variety bands and live music from Ida McBeth on Saturday, and a family show by Peanut Butter Hamster on Sunday. Additional free live music will be offered at Linden Square every weekend throughout the spring and summer as part of Sounds on the Square. Lawn seating is available, so spectators should bring lawn chairs or blankets. For a full lineup, visit www.gladstone.mo.us. A patio area and lawn seating area are available for spectators, as shown at far left. In the winter, the lawn in front of the amphitheater stage is transformed into a synthetic-surface ice skating rink. A concession stand, shown at left, also serves visitors at Linden Square.

State patrol launches new safety program

Circuit judge nominations sought

Col. Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, has announced a new traffic safety program for teenage and adult drivers entitled Gone Too Soon. This new traffic safety program is appropriate for those ages 14 and older. The video focuses on risky behaviors behind the wheel, such as drinking and driving, failure to use occupant restraints, inattentive driving, texting and speeding. The video is a collaborative effort between the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Ameren Missouri, Bloomsdale Excavating Co., Missouri Farm Bureau, Operation Lifesaver and State Farm Insurance. It is being released in April in time for the message to be shared prior to many high school proms. The timing also brings attention to the fact that April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Alcohol Awareness Month. Public information and education officers at each troop headquarters are available to schools, civic organizations and churches to present the safety program which includes the showing of “Gone Too Soon. There is no cost for the program.

The first support group meeting will be April 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Based on the most recent census data, more than 4,000 grandparents in the Northland are living with grandchildren younger than age 18. County health center marks 60 years of service By Ryne Dittmer It was an afternoon of reflection on the past, anticipation of the future and even a little dancing, as the Clay County Public Health Center celebrated its 60th anniversary April 3. The milestone was recognized with an open house that brought together a collection center’s community and fellow county health department partners. “60 years ago, this county has decided public health is important and now we

look forward to another 60 years,” Gary Zaborac, Clay County Public Health Center director, said. Clay County’s public health center has been empowering residents to live healthier lives since voters approved its establishment in 1953. Through the morethan-half-century since, the center has remained dedicated to addressing the county’s changing health needs, living up its mission to deliver the health services of prevention, promotion and protection to the

county’s communities. “What was causing disease, disability an death 60 years ago is very different from the things causing disease, disability and death today,” Zaborac said. “60 years ago communicable diseases, things like polio, were the focus for the health center. Because of the growth of the public health system, the pendulum has shifted away from communicable diseases and now it’s chronic disease affecting the health of our residents.”

To address the new set of health needs, the center has completed a comprehensive review of it’s practices. “What we’re doing now, is looking at the big picture and we hope that picture grows so we can develop programs to serve the needs of the county,” Pat Dixon, board of trustees chairman, said. According to Zaborac, that picture has developed to include a new strategic plan and move toward creating individual community

health improvement plans to serve the county’s 222,000 residents. “We are also going for national accreditation,” he said. “We hope to be one of the first accredited public health agencies in the United States.” The celebration had added value as it fell during National Public Health Week. “It is really an exciting time for us to be able to celebrate our 60th anniversary at this time. It’s really the icing on the cake,”

Dixon said. Zaborac concluded the celebration thanking those that have stood behind the health center its entire 60 years. “We want to say thank you to the community for supporting us,” he said. “Together we are the public health system and together we can make an impact on public health.”

of ovarian cancer and about 14,230 deaths from ovarian cancer will occur in the United States in 2013.

Cash prizes will be awarded for all flights, and there will be a putting contest. Door prizes will be awarded at the end of the tournament. House passes Carpenter’s bill to honor veterans The Missouri House of Representatives on April 3 voted 153-0 in favor of legislation sponsored by state Rep. Jon Carpenter, D-Kansas City, to correct an omission in existing state law that excludes some Missouri National

Guard veterans from participating in various state honors programs for war veterans. For years, the state of Missouri has formally recognized Missouri veterans who served during World War II, the Korean Conflict or the Vietnam War with official medallions and certificates, according to a press release. The original law left out some of Missouri National Guard veterans who served during these wars. Carpenter’s legislation, House Bill 450, would correct this mistake and ensure that all veterans are appropriately recognized for their service to our country. “It was an honor to work on this legislation” Carpenter said. “As a member of the House Veterans Committee, this was of special importance to me, and I would like to thank Mr. Larry Whelchel for bringing this to my attention and for his dedication to our veterans. I would also like to thank the Missouri National Guard for their support and testimony in favor of this bill, and all of my fellow representatives who voted in favor of it.” HB 450 now must be passed by the Missouri Senate then signed by the governor to become law. Carpenter represents Gladstone in the Missouri House.

after her disappearance, and one suspect was in custody. Lili Justine High was reported missing after a friend of her parents allegedly took the girl without the permission of her father, Bruce High, at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, April 7. An AMBER Alert was issued in response to the reported abduction. Tami J. Kelley, 38, was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant mid-morning Monday after High told police she had taken Lili from High’s home at 2700 NE Terrace in Gladstone According to police, Kelley arrived at High’s home on Sunday evening after not having contact with High for about three months. The two visited for a short time, and at one point High left the room. While he was gone, he heard a commotion in the front room. When he went to investigate, High discovered Kelley had left the residence with Lili. Bruce told police he had no idea why Kelley would take his daughter and said she might be working with Lili’s mother, Christina Willbanks. Police said both women are homeless.

Ford, UAW ‘ramp up’ help for Northlanders By Dale Garrison A partnership of Metro Lutheran Ministry, Ford Motor Co. and the United Auto Workers brings ramps to Northland homes in need of wheelchair accessibility. Since last fall, Ford has sponsored a team of four UAW members that has already built more than 30 ramps for area residents. Longtime MLM volunteer Leroy Zimmerman said the effort began with a United Way program that was adopted nationally by Ford and the UAW. Selecting Kansas City as one of four pilot sites, program leaders contacted MLM because of its experience. “We diagrammed how we build ramps and how our program worked,” Zimmerman said. “The UAW wanted to get

involved, and Ford made a major commitment. They now have four people on payroll building ramps all week. It’s a very serious effort.” Zimmerman said the addition of the UAW workers, with a well-equipped construction van and other items funded by Ford, has been huge. The result has dramatically expanded MLM’s own volunteer construction efforts. “It’s a real gift for us because we’ve been able to get those ramps built without any financial outlay,” Zimmerman said. The team includes UAW Community Service Chair Kim Roland of Liberty, Todd Hachman of Lawson, Tom Macomber of Lathrop and Phil Rangle of Independence. Roland said the work was extremely rewarding. “T here was one

The boy is now 12 and in a wheelchair, but he’s getting so large they wondered how they could get him to school without a ramp. My blessing was getting to meet all these people.” MLM ser vices the homeless and needy of Greater Kansas City with locations in Clay, Jackson and Wyandotte counties. The KCI Rotary Club hosted its annual 4-Way Test Speech Competition on Feb. 20. Area high school seniors were invited to prepare speeches demonstrating their understanding and application of the Rotary International 4-Way Test that includes four core questions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Does it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? The overall winner of the competition was Whitney Barr of Park Hill South High School. She advanced to the District 6040 level speech competition held March 30 in Chillicothe. Ben Shinogle, Park Hill High School, and Leland Martin, St. Pius X High School, were recognized and awarded prizes for second and third place.
