The North Oak Corridor Study will be the focus of the event from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at Harmony Vineyard Church, 600 NE 64th St. in Kansas City. Constitution group continues discussions Conversations regarding the organization of a new county constitution continued on April 9 as the Clay County Constitution Commission gathered in Excelsior Springs. Discussion at the meeting focused on the size of the county’s elected leadership, currently labeled by the group as the County Council, and how representation would be divided among the county. “It was a good free-range discussion,â€? Commission Co-chair Carol Suter of Gladstone said. “There’s an array of opinion on what would be best for the county.â€? The commission will continue conceptual discussion on the council’s structure and proposed term limits at its next meeting. “We are continuing to construct a theory. Then when we have the basics done, we will take some time to invite the public to react to the general outline. And once we’re past that, we will sit down to write actual statutes,â€? Suter said. The group will next meet at 5 p.m. Monday, April 29, at The Elms Hotel, 401 Regent St. in Excelsior Springs. All meetings are open to the public.

New last day of school May 31 The North Kansas City Schools Board of Education has approved an amended calendar for the current school year making Friday, May 31, the official last day of school. May 31 will be a half day, according to the district’s website. Winter weather and road conditions
caused schools to be closed five days this year, but the district will need to use only four of the designated make-up days. The state requires 174 attendance days. The original North Kansas City Schools 2012-2013 academic calendar included 175 days. The

your letters to the editor
Your Letters We must insist that our state provide affordable health care for all Right now our state House of Representatives is discussing the opportunity to increase access to affordable health care in Missouri through Medicaid Expansion. Currently, Missouri makes it harder than almost any other state to qualify for Medicaid. A mother with two children who earns more than $3,504 annually is not eligible for assistance and is expected to afford health insurance on her own. Medicaid expansion would increase coverage to adults and families who earn up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level — about $25,000 annually for a
family of three. This expansion would cover more than 260,000 uninsured Missourians in 2014 and save lives. Many claim that Medicaid Expansion is too expensive; that the federal government will renege on its promise to cover the cost at 100 percent for the first three years. Others don’t think increased medical coverage will mean more jobs in Missouri and yield more state revenue in income and sales taxes. Others fear that our state funding will be diverted from education to cover the states cost of Medicaid. At the present time, we are already diverting money from higher education to cover Missouri’s part of the existing uncompensated health care costs. Increasing access to
health insurance is the solution to save on our state health care costs. Furthermore, when uninsured people use the emergency room, it drives up the cost of private health insurance premiums. Without Medicaid expansion, families and small businesses will continue to bear this burden. This can be changed if enough of us contact our legislators to insist that our state provide affordable health care for Missourians. Not only will we live out our promise to care for “the least of these,” but we will honor our Missouri motto stating, “the welfare of the people shall be the supreme law”. Carol Bloomer, Liberty

The Big Muddy What is a Watershed?
A Big Muddy History The name “Missouri,” in Missouri River, comes from a Native American tribe that lived along the river. The name means “People of the Big Canoes” because the tribe used massive “dugout” canoes made from cottonwood logs. The state was named after the river. The river’s nickname is “The Big Muddy,” because of all the dirt and sand that the river brings along with it, which gives it a chocolate color. The Missouri ends in the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers near St. Louis. The first white American explorers to travel the length of the Missouri River were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, along with their crew called the Corps of Discovery. It took them 14 months to get up the river to Three Forks, Montana, where the Missouri River starts. A boat can’t float from the beginning of the Missouri River to the end anymore because there are 15 dams along the river. Six of those dams create huge “reservoirs” or lakes that help control floods on the river and store water for dry years. The river also has been straightened, or “channelized,” to keep it from moving around and to make it easier for barges to use the river. Today the river is 72 miles shorter than it was when Lewis and Clark traveled it.
A watershed includes all of the land that drains into the same river. It acts like a giant bowl. We all live in a watershed. If it rains in your backyard, that water will eventually drain into a stream, and then a river. Your watershed is named after the biggest river that rain will drain into. The Missouri River watershed is 1/6 of the area of the continental United

States. The Missouri River watershed includes parts of 10 states and two Canadian provinces. The river itself touches seven states: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. The Missouri River is 2,341 miles long, making it the longest river in North America. All of the Missouri River Watershed is also part of the Mississippi River watershed because the Missouri River flows into the “Mighty Miss.” All of the streams

40% of Missouri residents get their drinking water from the One Missouria n Missouri River. One Hundred Uses Gallons or 832 Lbs. In Missouri, 80 percent of concrete of Water a Da is made from Missouri River sand. y! The “Big Muddy” is less muddy than it used to be. The river carries 1/4 of the sediment (sand and mud) that it did naturally. That sediment is now trapped behind dams. The Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is required to manage the Missouri River for 8 purposes: Navigation, Flood Control, Water Supply, Water Quality, Fish and Wildlife, Recreation, Irrigation and Hydropower. The Missouri River is about 1/3 as wide as it was. Channelization created new farm land but destroyed many thousands of acres of habitat for birds, fish and wildlife. The USACE is now working to restore some of the islands and wetlands that fish and wildlife need.

Fishermen or other people hanging out along the river leave some of the trash in the Missouri River. Some gets dumped in the river by people too lazy to dispose of it properly. But most of it washes in from other rivers and streams that drain into the Missouri River. Any piece of trash from any street or yard in your town can get blown or washed into a storm drain or stream. All of that ends up draining into the big river. There are no government agencies that regularly clean trash from the Missouri River. It is up to local communities to clean their rivers. Since 2001, Missouri River Relief has hosted 104 river cleanups in 22 communities, working with 17,000 volunteers to remove 718 tons of trash from the banks of the Missouri River. That’s almost 1-½ million pounds of junk that doesn’t belong there!
You Can Help! You can help the Missouri River by cleaning up your neighborhood or your favorite stream. You can even adopt your favorite stream by starting a Missouri Stream Team. (www.mostreamteam.org) To learn more about Missouri River Relief, visit www.riverrelief.org

Home offices in tight spaces A home office is a necessity for many adults these days. While some people have entire rooms available to house a home office, others have to make do with less space, and that can mean fitting an office into a tight space. The first step in establishing a small home office is figuring out the space you have and any limitations that may accompany it. For example, maybe you have an unused corner in the living room but don’t want to have wires and equipment out in the open. An armoire-type desk that can be closed when not in use is a viable option in such a situation. Perhaps
there is an unused closet in a bedroom. A wall-mounted desk surface, such as a piece of custom-cut countertop material, complete with foldaway mouse and keyboard tray can easily
turn the space into a compact nook. Maybe there is an entryway with a small table that would be large enough for a laptop. A stool or ottoman that can be tucked
under it can serve as a desk chair and extra seating for company.

Who is your Favorite Northlander?
Earlier this year, we asked readers to nominate people they know who have made a positive difference in the community and who deserve recognition. The combined staff of the Liberty Tribune, Gladstone Dispatch and The Kearney Courier selected four finalists from among these reader-nominated individuals to appear on the 2013 Best of the Northland ballot, and our readers will pick the Favorite Northlander as they vote on their other Northland favorites. Before you cast your vote, get to know this year’s nominees from the profiles below, then enter your choice in the Favorite Northlander category on the ballot. The ballot for our annual reader’s choice awards is also available onlie at www.BestoftheNorthland.net. Lou DeMarco
Lou DeMarco of Cosentino’s Price Chopper off Interstate 35 and Missouri Highway 291 is described by his employees as “one of the most remarkable store directors that the Northland has and will ever see.” DeMarco’s dedication to his store, his employees and his community are second to none. He and his wife, Donna, are active members of the Liberty and Kansas City North communities, volunteering their time to many local organizations. He belongs to and his a former board member of Sertoma. He also has been involved with the Liberty Chamber of Commerce for more than 15 years. The Liberty Hospital Foundation also has been a part of DeMarco’s life, as has Hillcrest Ministries, which aids in rehabilitating lives and families. DeMarco believes that the education of our youth and the activities they participate in are important. He has donated products to Liberty Public Schools for several occasions. His involvement extends to Freedom House, the St. James School Board, and being a ranking member of the Knights of Columbus, among other organizations. His family, including his wife of 29 years and their four sons, is involved with the state foster care system, helping other families and children. DeMarco’s support of his own family includes standing by Donna during her fight with breast cancer. “His involvement in his community and being a part of his employees’ and customers’ lives each day make him the impeccable director and human that he is.,” according to his nomination for Favorite Northlander recognition.
J.J. Greenwood
J.J. Greenwood of Kansas City North likes to tell people he spent 30 years in the federal penitentiary — which he did, as an inmate counselor. Since his retirement he has continued to provide coaching, mediation and guidance to Northlanders — some compensated and some on a volunteer basis. Among the work he does is mediating victimoffender restitution cases for the non-profit Conciliation Center based in Liberty, and family disputes between never-married and divorcing parents. He also does mediation for the Juvenile Offices of both Clay and Platte counties, working with delinquent youth and children beyond parental control (parent-adolescent mediation). Greenwood is the coordinator of a community justice board that connects community members with juvenile offenders to discuss the consequences of their offense and develop a plan to make things right. He was successful in reaching out to security officers in big-box retail stores to help the community justice boards work on the problem of juvenile shoplifting. He is also involved with Big Brothers. Most recently, Greenwood has become a coach for down-ontheir-luck parents trying to pay off child support arrears and get back on their feet. He is not a high-profile guy, according to the person who nominated him for Favorite Northlander recognition. “He is one of those salt-of-the-earth folks who don’t get much media attention but quietly go about trying to help people heal broken relationships and build their confidence to make the most of their strengths,” said the nomination.
Elizabeth Schneider
Elizabeth Schneider of Kansas City North is known for helping out across the Northland wherever there is a need. She is an advocate for shopping locally and recycling, is a businesswoman and a supporter of local students. She welcomes friends and family into her home as a safe haven, making it a second home to many. Schneider is active at St. James Catholic Church, leading the scheduling program for HOPE,and donating blood at the parrish every eight weeks. She also recently finished a stint as the secretary for her neighborhood homeowner’s association. She attends as many sporting events as she can at St. Pius X High School, as well as serving many community members as their Mary Kay representative and as a ticket salesperson at major sporting venues in the Kansas City metro area. She was the first to secure multiple recycling bins (four) for the St. James parking area, the model for other schools and churches across the Northland. She will help anyone in the community as best as she can. With her Mary Kay business, she recently held a class in honor of a neighbor and friend with cystic fibrosis, and all of her earnings ($500) went straight to his benefit for a doublelung transplant. “She is always willing to donate time or what money she has to help others, and that makes her my favorite Northlander,” according to the person to nominated Schneider for Favorite Northlander recognition.
Donice Yeater
Donice Yeater of Parkville has touched many lives as the director of Hillcrest Transitional Housing of Platte County, a program that provides temporary housing for homeless families so they can get back on their feet. The program requires that they attend life skills and community living classes along with budget counseling to ensure they can become self-sufficient. “Donice has been making this program work to its fullest potential in Platte County for the past 2 1/2 years,” according to the person who nominated her for Favorite Northlander recognition. “Under her direction, Hillcrest of Platte County has two housing sites for families, as well as two thrift shops.” As an active resident of the Northland, Yeater can be found cheering on her daughter at Park Hill South High School swim meets or at Rotary meetings. She also is on the Warrior Dash Committee and a member of the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class. She can be spotted at the Harvest Ball year year or at Platte Woods United Methodist Church leading Sunday school classes. Yeater always stops to chat and find out how people are doing, remembering everyone’s names and making them feel special each time she speaks with them. She never seems to get tired, even though her calendar is always full. And yet she will make time in her busy schedule to meet with members of the community to move forward with Hillcrest’s mission to help homeless families become self-supportive, self-reliant contributors to society.
