ReSALE SHOP to host grand opening May 1 For weeks now, curious passers-by have wondered about all the work and renovations occurring at 6601 N. Oak Trafficway in Gladstone (formerly Rod’s Hallmark). Many have stopped in to observe volunteers from Assistance League of Kansas City painting, sorting and moving items from the former location of THE ReSALE SHOP, according to a press release. THE ReSALE SHOP is now open at its new location and invites customers, donors and the public to a special grand opening celebration on Wednesday, May 1. Several special sales will be offered for customers, and a ribbon cutting by the Gladstone Chamber of Commerce will be held at 3:30 p.m. THE ReSALE SHOP is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The shop sells gently-used merchandise that has been donated by the public. Donations are always needed and can be accepted during normal business hours at the west door of the building. All proceeds support the philanthropic programs of Assistance League of Kansas City. One of the organization’s biggest philanthropic programs, Operation School Bell, is housed in one-third of the new building. This program provides new clothing to nearly 2,000 local school children each year. The organization had been leasing space for THE ReSALE SHOP, just two blocks south. THE ReSALE SHOP first opened in 1997, and is still run entirely by volunteers. By purchasing the new building, the organization will reduce its monthly lease payments and invest in the future expansion of Assistance League’s programs in the area. For more information on Assistance League’s programs and THE ReSALE SHOP, visit www.alkc.org.

Spring Parade of Homes showcases 322 new homes It’s time for the annual Spring Parade of Homes, a Kansas City tradition for more than 50 years. Builders of 322 homes are rolling out welcome mats to the public throughout the metropolitan area through May 5. This year’s event is sponsored by Stewart Title. The Spring Parade of Homes offers a wealth of housing choices and is an opportunity to discover all of
the innovative options available in today’s new homes. Whether buyers are looking for homes that offer energy efficiency and green living or for designs aimed at making homes accessible and enjoyable, local builders are consistently looking for ways to make homes better than ever. Variety is also a hallmark of this event with 92 builders represented in eight counties, 24 school districts
and prices ranging from $170,000 to $2 million. With interest rates still hovering around historic lows, there’s no better time to buy a new home. Homes will be open daily 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is free. In addition, free Parade Guide books are available. Event information and an online Parade home search are available at www.KCParadeofHomes. com, where homes can be viewed by
a range of categories including price, location, builder, school district, floor plan and subdivision. Home buyers and consumers flock to tour new homes to see the latest in new home design and innovations. The Spring Parade of Homes (previously the Spring Homes Tour) has given buyers a wealth of housing choices to find the home of their dreams since 1962.

Housing starts rise on strength in multifamily Soaring production of multifamily apartments pushed nationwide housing starts beyond the million-unit mark for the first time since 2008 in March, according to newly released figures from HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau. The data show that total starts activity rose 7.0 percent for the month due entirely to a 31.1 percent increase on the multifamily side, while single-family production slipped 4.8 percent from a number that was revised strongly upward for the previous month. “Today’s report is a reflection of the solid demand that many areas are seeing for rental apartments as young people take that first step into the housing market, which is a very positive development, noted Rick Judson, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders and a home builder from Charlotte, N.C. “The numbers are also in keeping with our latest surveys that show single-family builders are experiencing some difficulties in keeping up with rising demand for new homes due to increasing construction costs and other factors. Calling the latest data a “mixed bag due to the opposite direction of single- and multifamily starts and a somewhat weaker amount of permit issuance, NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe said that nevertheless, the numbers indicate “a continuation of the slow, methodical march forward that characterizes the housing recovery. He also noted that “The threemonth moving average for single-family starts remained unchanged at 628,000 units in March — which is right on pace with NAHB’s forecast for a 25 percent gain in new-home production in 2013. While single-family starts declined 4.8 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 619,000 units in March, this was entirely due to a substantial upward revision to the previous month’s data, without which virtually no change would have been recorded. At the same time, multifamily housing starts surged 31.1 percent to a
seasonally adjusted annual rate of 417,000 units — their fastest pace since January 2006. Three out of four regions posted gains in combined single- and multifamily housing production in March, with the Midwest registering a 9.6 percent increase, the South posting a 10.9 percent gain and the West noting a
2.7 percent rise. The Northeast was the lone exception to the rule, with a 5.8 percent decline. Following a large gain in the previous month, total permit issuance fell 3.9 percent to a 902,000-unit rate in March. That decline reflected a 0.5 percent reduction to 595,000 units on the single-family side and a 10 percent reduction to 307,000
CONGRATULATIONS
units on the multifamily side. In contrast to the regional starts report, the Northeast was the only part of the country to post a gain in permitting activity in March, with a 24.7 percent increase to 101,000 units. Meanwhile, the Midwest, South and West posted declines of 2.1 percent, 6.2 percent and 10.4 percent, respectively.

The Northland Coalition, with the support of Tri-County Mental Health Services, has partnered with the Drug Enforcement Agency, law enforcement agencies and other communities across the country to encourage the responsible disposal of prescriptions during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27. The service is free and anonymous. The Gladstone Department of Public Safety has a prescription drug drop box at 7010 N. Holmes St. It is available 24 hours a day. For more information on this drop-off site, call 436-3550. The take-back event offers the community another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. “Prescriptions are now the major cause of fatal drug overdoses — even tripling since 1999 and exceeding overdoses from heroin and cocaine,” said Vicky Ward, prevention services manager for TriCounty Mental Health Services. She said the success of past and ongoing prescription collections had been encouraging. Illicit drugs such as cocaine and marijuana are not accepted. Police recommend anyone finding illicit drugs call 911 and ask for an officer to respond to the location. Sharp objects such as needles, radioactive medicines, bio-hazardous materials, glass thermometers and other medical devices also will not be accepted. For those unable to use the Prescription Drug Take Back boxes in their area, the following method of disposal is recommended: Remove and shred labels from the bottles. Crush pills and mix them with coffee grounds or kitty litter. Place the mixture in a sealed container and dispose of it with trash.

Photocopies will NOT be accepted. Must fill out minimum of 40 categories on ballot to be counted. Limit four entries per person.
Who is your Favorite Northlander?
Earlier this year, we asked readers to nominate people they know who have made a positive difference in the community and who deserve recognition. The combined staff of the Liberty Tribune, Gladstone Dispatch and The Kearney Courier selected four finalists from among these reader-nominated individuals to appear on the 2013 Best of the Northland ballot, and our readers will pick the Favorite Northlander as they vote on their other Northland favorites. Before you cast your vote, get to know this year’s nominees from the profiles below, then enter your choice in the Favorite Northlander category on the ballot. The ballot for our annual reader’s choice awards is also available onlie at www.BestoftheNorthland.net. Lou DeMarco
Lou DeMarco of Cosentino’s Price Chopper off Interstate 35 and Missouri Highway 291 is described by his employees as “one of the most remarkable store directors that the Northland has and will ever see.” DeMarco’s dedication to his store, his employees and his community are second to none. He and his wife, Donna, are active members of the Liberty and Kansas City North communities, volunteering their time to many local organizations. He belongs to and his a former board member of Sertoma. He also has been involved with the Liberty Chamber of Commerce for more than 15 years. The Liberty Hospital Foundation also has been a part of DeMarco’s life, as has Hillcrest Ministries, which aids in rehabilitating lives and families. DeMarco believes that the education of our youth and the activities they participate in are important. He has donated products to Liberty Public Schools for several occasions. His involvement extends to Freedom House, the St. James School Board, and being a ranking member of the Knights of Columbus, among other organizations. His family, including his wife of 29 years and their four sons, is involved with the state foster care system, helping other families and children. DeMarco’s support of his own family includes standing by Donna during her fight with breast cancer. “His involvement in his community and being a part of his employees’ and customers’ lives each day make him the impeccable director and human that he is.,” according to his nomination for Favorite Northlander recognition.
J.J. Greenwood
J.J. Greenwood of Kansas City North likes to tell people he spent 30 years in the federal penitentiary — which he did, as an inmate counselor. Since his retirement he has continued to provide coaching, mediation and guidance to Northlanders — some compensated and some on a volunteer basis. Among the work he does is mediating victimoffender restitution cases for the non-profit Conciliation Center based in Liberty, and family disputes between never-married and divorcing parents. He also does mediation for the Juvenile Offices of both Clay and Platte counties, working with delinquent youth and children beyond parental control (parent-adolescent mediation). Greenwood is the coordinator of a community justice board that connects community members with juvenile offenders to discuss the consequences of their offense and develop a plan to make things right. He was successful in reaching out to security officers in big-box retail stores to help the community justice boards work on the problem of juvenile shoplifting. He is also involved with Big Brothers. Most recently, Greenwood has become a coach for down-ontheir-luck parents trying to pay off child support arrears and get back on their feet. He is not a high-profile guy, according to the person who nominated him for Favorite Northlander recognition. “He is one of those salt-of-the-earth folks who don’t get much media attention but quietly go about trying to help people heal broken relationships and build their confidence to make the most of their strengths,” said the nomination.
Elizabeth Schneider
Elizabeth Schneider of Kansas City North is known for helping out across the Northland wherever there is a need. She is an advocate for shopping locally and recycling, is a businesswoman and a supporter of local students. She welcomes friends and family into her home as a safe haven, making it a second home to many. Schneider is active at St. James Catholic Church, leading the scheduling program for HOPE,and donating blood at the parrish every eight weeks. She also recently finished a stint as the secretary for her neighborhood homeowner’s association. She attends as many sporting events as she can at St. Pius X High School, as well as serving many community members as their Mary Kay representative and as a ticket salesperson at major sporting venues in the Kansas City metro area. She was the first to secure multiple recycling bins (four) for the St. James parking area, the model for other schools and churches across the Northland. She will help anyone in the community as best as she can. With her Mary Kay business, she recently held a class in honor of a neighbor and friend with cystic fibrosis, and all of her earnings ($500) went straight to his benefit for a doublelung transplant. “She is always willing to donate time or what money she has to help others, and that makes her my favorite Northlander,” according to the person to nominated Schneider for Favorite Northlander recognition.
Donice Yeater
Donice Yeater of Parkville has touched many lives as the director of Hillcrest Transitional Housing of Platte County, a program that provides temporary housing for homeless families so they can get back on their feet. The program requires that they attend life skills and community living classes along with budget counseling to ensure they can become self-sufficient. “Donice has been making this program work to its fullest potential in Platte County for the past 2 1/2 years,” according to the person who nominated her for Favorite Northlander recognition. “Under her direction, Hillcrest of Platte County has two housing sites for families, as well as two thrift shops.” As an active resident of the Northland, Yeater can be found cheering on her daughter at Park Hill South High School swim meets or at Rotary meetings. She also is on the Warrior Dash Committee and a member of the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class. She can be spotted at the Harvest Ball year year or at Platte Woods United Methodist Church leading Sunday school classes. Yeater always stops to chat and find out how people are doing, remembering everyone’s names and making them feel special each time she speaks with them. She never seems to get tired, even though her calendar is always full. And yet she will make time in her busy schedule to meet with members of the community to move forward with Hillcrest’s mission to help homeless families become self-supportive, self-reliant contributors to society.
