COUNCIL: McCullough praised for dedication Continued from Page A1 mayor Barry McCullough during the July 22 meeting. It was McCullough’s last meeting, as he stepped down because he’s moving outside of the city. Council members, as well as former mayor Les Smith, told of how McCullough earned their respect with a strong first bid for office, dedication to city involvement after defeat and effectively voicing his opinions once elected. “We didn’t always see eye to eye,” Council member Carol Suter said. “I appreciate that you come from a different philosophical perspective than I do. I believe our differences helped us to make better decisions.” Mayor Jean Moore presented McCullough a key to the city and said, “We will miss your leadership and your voice on the challenges we all share on the council. We will miss your smile. We will miss having you as our colleague.” McCullough responded, “I’ve been so fortunate. I’ve been very lucky to be a part of it.”

News in Brief Couch to 5K program begins Aug. 10 Gladstone Community Center will begin its first Couch to 5K training program Saturday, Aug. 10. The Couch to 5K approach is designed to take away the fear of running and make it an accessible activity in an individualized way. A typical Couch to 5K plan takes the goal of running in a race and then breaks it down into smaller goals. On the first day of training, for example, one might alternate walking for a minute with jogging for two minutes, for a total of 30 minutes. As the weeks go by, the walking decreases, and the jogging or running increases. The first meeting will be at 8 a.m. Aug. 10 at the Gladstone Community Center, 6901 N. Holmes St. Weekly meetings will be held Saturdays through Sept. 28, and the program will finish just in time for the Gladstone Scarecrow 5K Run held each year in conjunction with Gladfest. Weekly meetings will include checks on running progress, a weekly training schedule, group workout, weekly nutritional tips and challenges. The registration fee is $35 for community center members and $50 for non-members. To register, visit www.activityreg.com/ selectactivity.wcs. For information, go to www.gladstonecommunitycenter.com or call 423-4200.

Varying levels of sponsorship are available for individuals and businesses. For more information, contact Vinnie Vaccaro at 679-4049 or Trish Herzog at 806-7777.

Northland Elks Lodge 2376 in Gladstone awarded $8,000 in academic scholarships to high school seniors and $2,000 to support students attending Northland Career Center in Platte City. Pictured are $500 scholarship recipients Kaylee Stober, Oak Park High School graduate; Emily Waters, Central High School graduate; and Megan McClurg, Mid-Buchanan High School graduate. These students completed an 11-month program to receive degrees in practical nursing form the Northland Career Center.

Four professionals in city administration or parks and recreation said that “softer,” quality-of-life amenities can represent hard cash to cities and their residents. Addressing nearly 100 people at the Clay County Economic Development Council’s July 30 Strategic Planning Initiative meeting, Gladstone City Manger Kirk Davis put it bluntly: “Parks and recreation is business. It’s big business.” Liberty Parks and Recreation Director Janet Snook cited several projects in Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit and Overland Park, Kan., where park developments, sports complexes and golf courses have increased property values several times the original project cost. She noted a small town in Colorado where some of the community’s first retail development occurred near a new community center. “Park and recreation amenities are an economic driver,” Snook said. “Johnson County (Kan.) estimates they get $4 million a year in impact from their soccer complex. Liberty sees an estimated 147,000 visitors annually from its Fountain Bluff Sports Complex. A hotel manager told me he can always tell when we have a tournament because he’s booked.” She noted that most of the construction and development costs also pay back because local firms are often used to build the projects. Davis said other amenities helped, too. Gladstone recently invested $1 million to create a land bank to provide

Nearly 100 people turned out July 30 at the Gladstone Community Center for a dialog on the value of parks and other quality-of-life amenities. The event was organized by the Clay County Economic Development Council. a build-ready parcel for private development of a city center — something Gladstone has never had. That investment led to a now-full, $4 million office building, which was just followed with announcement for a $25 million, multi-use development. “That $1 million investment has brought nearly $30 million to the city,” Davis said. “And that’s only the start.” Hollye Gurley, director of Marketing for Oceans of Fun/Worlds of Fun, said 45 percent of that facility’s guests are from out of town. Nearly half of those visitors spend at least one night at area hotels. Mark McHenry, director of Kansas City Parks and Recreation, said building a “cool” city is also important because it helps protect existing property values and attracts new growth. He noted Kansas City has several plans under

way in the Northland, including construction of a second community center and continued development of the city’s famous boulevards and fountains. Greg Canuteson, co-chair of the Strategic Initiative, said these types of amenities are critical because they help attract business and talented workers. “Talent attraction is everything,” he said. “Bringing the kind of people who will help your community grow is critical.” Sponsored by the Clay County Economic Development Council, the Strategic Planning Initiative is co-chaired by Canuteson and Jerry Nolte. The next meeting will be Tuesday, Aug. 20, in Excelsior Springs and focus on business infrastructure. For additional information or to RSVP for the free event, call 468-4989.

900 new Ford workers on the job Automaker prepares for Transit van production at Northland plant

Ford Motor Co. welcomed a third crew of 900 new hourly workers Monday, Aug. 5 at its Kansas City Assembly Plant to meet customer demand for the Ford F-150. Ford F-150 is part of the Ford F-Series lineup, the nation’s No. 1-selling vehicle for 31 years and the best-selling truck for 36 years, according to a press release from the automaker. “Ford F-Series sales are the strongest since 2006, and we are increasing production to meet this demand,” said Doug Scott, Ford Truck Group marketing manager. “This is an important indicator that our economy is growing again. We are proud that Ford trucks are helping more and more of our customers get back to work.” The additional production crew is Ford’s first step in bringing more than 2,000 jobs to the Kansas City Assembly Plant to meet growing truck demand and to launch production of the Ford Transit van early next year. Over the past year, Ford announced it would increase capacit y by 600,000 units in North America to meet increasing demand for its cars, trucks and utilities. The additional jobs at the Kansas City Assembly Plant, located in Claycomo, come as Ford continues to retool

and expand the facility through a $1.1 billion investment to ready for Transit production. The plant has more than 250 suppliers nationally and more than 10 suppliers locally that will benefit from the addition of a third crew. When Transit production begins, close to 275 suppliers nationally and six suppliers locally will grow their business. “Missouri’s resurgent auto industry continues to drive economic growth and create good jobs for Missouri families in Kansas City and across the state,” Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said. “I applaud Ford for their historic investment in this region and congratulate the hundreds of additional autoworkers going to work building America’s most popular pickup right here in the Show-Me State.” With the additional crew at Kansas City Assembly Plant, Ford has reached 75 percent of its goal to create 12,000 hourly jobs in the United States by 2015. The Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker has added 2,335 hourly jobs and 1,500 salary jobs in the U.S. this year. F-Series sales increased 22 percent from January to July 2013, compared to the same period last year. Based on July U.S. sales results, F-Series sales have increased for 24 consecutive months.

Contributed Photo/Ford Motor Co.

Mark Williams works on an F-150 truck at the Ford Motor Co. assembly plant in Claycomo. F-Series sales increased 22 percent from January to July 2013.

F-Series demand F-150 leads in a variety of fields, including: ■■ 68 percent market share in hazardous materials work ■■ 67 percent share in the oil pipeline industry ■■ 62 percent share in road and highway maintenance

A third crew of 900 hourly employees has been added to the Ford Motor Co. Kansas City Assembly Plant, 8121 NE U.S. Highway 69 in Claycomo.
