Chris Bryan hangs Christmas lights on a building in the Gladstone City Center. His childhood wish to get up onto roofs and other places people don’t normally go is fulfilled on an ongoing basis in his job.

Santa to be at community center Dec. 1 Santa will be at the Gladstone Community Center from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1. Cookies with Santa will be a time of fun and holiday cheer, according to organizers. Hosted by Sherrie Rickel and Scott Vulgamott of ReMax Results, this free event will feature Santa and cookie decorating. Children also will have the opportunity to make “Snowman Soup” and “Reindeer Dust.” There will be a photographer taking pictures, but parents are encouraged to bring their own cameras as well.

Getting the hang of the lighter side of work You’ve heard the saying, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Chris Bryan lives this principle. He is a professional Christmas light hanger that I met as he was climbing to the roof of my office building to hang lights one recent afternoon. Considering he was there to work, I was immediately impressed with his enthusiasm

and smile. “You must really enjoy what you do,” I commented as he attached his safety harness. Quickly nodding his head, he replied, “Yes.” Chris described to me how fun it is to arrive at a client’s house to hang lights and have a bunch of enthusiastic kids coming running out the door to watch him work. As a kid growing up, he always wanted to get up onto roofs and other places people

don’t normally go. Now he has the ability to do that every year beginning about Oct. 15. “How many rooftops have you viewed the sunset from?” he asked me. It’s different when you’re up in the air, he explained. There’s nothing in your way. Raised in Gladstone, Chris attended Oakwood Manor, Antioch Middle School and Oak Park High School. After

Caring through clothes

Clay County Clothes Closet provides for Northland needy By Ryne Dittmer Caring is a year-round focus at the Clay County Clothes Closet. Founded by Church Women United of Clay County in 1959, the organization has operated under a mission of providing free clothing to Northland residents in need for more than 50 years. “We’re here to serve families from infants through grandparents, giving them clothes as needed,” said Julie Conn, who serves on the organization’s board of directors. “They must be recommended for service and can come two times a year to get clothes.” The Clothes Closet supplies individuals with basic clothing items such as shoes, underwear and jeans, as well as dress clothes and jackets. During visits to the Clothes Closet, clients are able to select the items from the organization’s collection, which is maintained by donations from community members and area businesses. “We get a lot of gently used clothes and get a lot of new clothes too,” volunteer Dwight Sampson said. Along with clothing, the Clothes Closet lets its youngest clients pick out a toy during their visits.

Record loans help area businesses grow By Dale Garrison

The Baker family of Gladstone, minus one son, enjoyed a Hawaiian getaway to the island of Kauai in October. They shared the Gladstone Dispatch with fellow snorkelers on a trip along the NaPali Coast, where the latest installment in the Jurassic Park franchise is being filmed on location.

Midwest Small Business Finance, an affiliate of the Clay County Economic Development Council, is setting records this year in its efforts to help area small businesses expand and develop. MSBF was founded in 1982 and is on course to exceed $5.6 million in SBA loans for 2013 —well above the best previous annual record of $4.2 million. The loans are used in combination with traditional bank financing to offer businesses a much lower interest rate on new locations and expansions that add jobs. Combined with the EDC’s services in everything from workforce development to navigating regulations, the

“That new office building is helping jumpstart Gladstone’s Linden Square project, Siverling said. “We are also going to help finance a nearby Karate for Kids, so the work is still ongoing. All of which brings new jobs, helps improve the community and makes for a better quality of life. When you step back, it’s pretty dramatic. That’s not a surprise to owner Dr. Louis Pollina at Dentistry for Children, which is now located in its new three-story office building at 7001 N. Cherry St. “Their services helped us grow, he said. “It’s a big help and people need to be aware of it. They help businesses grow and bring jobs to the community. That’s good for everyone.

result is dramatic. “When a business wants to move to Clay County or expand, we can work with them on the questions and issues they are facing, said EDC Chairman Tony Reinhart. “We can locate funding for training, work with cities for permitting and codes, and help finance them with some of the best rates in the world. There are very few organizations that can provide this wide range of services. MSBF President Reuben Siverling said impact on the community from all of this is significant as well. He noted one of the most recent projects resulted in the successful opening of a new Gladstone location for Dentistry for Children.

News in Brief

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has announced that the city of Gladstone has received the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget. “The award represents a significant achievement by the city,” according to a city press release. “It reflects the commitment of the City Council and staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting.” In order to receive the budget award, the entity has to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device. Budget documents

must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories to receive the award. When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is presented to an individual or department designated as being primarily responsible for its having achieved the award. This has been presented to Debra Daily, Gladstone’s director of finance.

clothes: Nonprofit welcomes volunteers

Continued from Page A8 “The kids absolutely melt your heart. They are just the sweetest kids,” Conn said. “We try to treat them with dignity, like this is a shopping experience. We want it to be as positive as possible. We want them all to go out feeling great.” The Clothes Closet operates with approximately 50 regular volunteers who help individuals pick out clothes, and sort and organize donations. “I think we have such a fantastic group that work here. I’ve never worked anywhere like that before.” He said he has a great, supportive boss who models the philosophy of his company, which is to treat people as he would want to be treated. Chris has worked his way up from installer to head lead, and he’s not looking to leave anytime soon. “I don’t want my ponytail to scare people. I’m really a nice guy,” he said, joking. In the offseason, he cleans carpets for the same company. He prefers to be outside, but admits he hates the cold. He considers it worth it, though, to remain working outside. After interviewing Chris, I can see why his boss is so lucky to have him. Under the
