Longtime music teacher looks to share his Christian love with CD Del Sutton doesn’t think his newest CD speaks to contemporary or traditional religious believers. “Only From My Heart” speaks to both groups, said the longtime Gladstone music teacher. “Music is music to me, but some religious music fans only enjoy contemporary music, and many only want traditional music,” Sutton said. “I tried to bridge the gap in hopes that the message of the words will override musical preference and that the Scripture readings in the lyrics and the inspired word of God will speak to the heart even before the ear.” Sutton is not new to the music scene. He began singing when he was 3 years old and never stopped.

He went on to major in music education at Ottawa University and began his life-long love of teaching music. He taught music for more than 29 years at New Mark Middle School in Gladstone and sang regularly as part of the North Cross United Methodist Church choir. Since retiring, he turned his focus toward writing and recording his first CD published by Tate Music Group. “Singing is me, it’s a vital part of my personality and makeup,” Sutton said. “Singing, they say, is praying twice. Sometimes emotions and prayerful thought can be shared and expressed through music that cannot be expressed in other ways.”

“Only From My Heart” is a collection of worship and praise music to glorify God. The music and lyrics offer encouragement to follow Christ. All nine songs on the CD are written and composed by Sutton. “I pray and study the Bible every day,” he said. “Many of the lyrics come straight from passages and stories in the Bible. Some are inspired by personal experiences and from reading and listening to other people’s stories and experiences they are dealing with in life.” The final track on the CD, “River of Tears,” Sutton wrote after the devastating tornado that hit Joplin in 2011. Other songs on the album, including “I’m Coming Home,”

enjoyment as well.” Sutton, along with wife Ellen, live in Gladstone. Sutton has always believed his voice and songwriting have been gifts from God. “Music has, and will, continue to touch my heart just like the spirit of God can touch me,” he said. “Words can express how I feel. Music just feeds my soul.”

“God Simply Comes” and “It’s In God’s Hands,” come from Bible stories Sutton transformed into original songs. “I know that lots of people are struggling today to make ends meet,” he said. “They need hope and a positive message and a renewed faith in God to get them through their trials. I just hope that the music and lyrics in this CD will bring just a glimmer of light into their darkness and some

Winter Driving Tips Winter is approaching, and the inevitable threat of winter weather will eventually become a reality. Now is the time to prepare your winter emergency travel kit to have in your vehicle and to review some basic safe driving tips for winter weather. ■■ Avoid driving while you’re fatigued. Getting the proper amount of rest before taking on winter weather tasks reduces driving risks. ■■ Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage. ■■ Make certain your tires are properly inflated and you have the proper tires. ■■ Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up. ■■ If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather. ■■ Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand). ■■ Always look and steer where you want to go. ■■ Use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle. ■■ Put your transmission in neutral when slowing on snowor ice-covered roads. ■■ Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads; accelerating, stopping and turning — nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly. ■■ Accelerate and decelerate slowly. ■■ Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill. ■■ Keep lights and windshield clean, have the windshield washer reservoir full. ■■ Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels to help get traction. ■■ And the best tip: Stay home. If you really don’t have to go out, don’t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don’t tempt fate: If you don’t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors. Singleton and the driver of that vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash; Bowne was not. Joseph L. Mayo, 57, of Hartville died after the motorcycle he was driving struck a vehicle head-on. Mayo was attempting to pass a third vehicle when the crash occurred on Missouri Highway 38 in Wright County. County officers receive valor awards for fire response After assessing the situation and deciding the individual was not intending harm, Wilhelm took control the gun, uncuffed the individual and directed him out of the burning building. “We then sledged open a few more rooms and got down off the upper floor and let the fire department do their work,” Wilhelm said. Outside of the hotel, Bennett and Wilhelm continued to help move the approximately 30 displaced individuals to the nearby Hy-Vee, which had opened its doors to provide a warm shelter. fire, Bennett said it was flattering to be recognized by the association. “I showed up and did what needed to be done,” he said. “I was surprised, but it was nice to be recognized.” Wilhelm shared a similar outlook on the award. “It’s flattering to get that. I don’t think I did anything that any other officer wouldn’t have done,” Wilhelm said. “I was in the right place at the right time.” Bratcher and fellow Liberty officer Wendi Mason were also recognized with Valor Awards for their response to the fire.

A pair of Clay County Sheriff’s Office employees were recognized for their public service at the Metropolitan Chiefs and Sheriffs Association’s Awards for Valor luncheon Nov. 22. The event, sponsored by the association along with Code 1 Credit Union and the city of Riverside, recognized 96 Kansas City-area officers for acts of heroism over the past year. Sgt. Steve Wilhelm and Deputy Kevin Bennett were each presented with bronze awards for distinguished service for their response to a fire at the Days Inn on Missouri Highway 291 in Liberty on Dec. 12, 2012. Bennett said it was about 2:30 in the morning when the call came in. “I overheard Liberty (Police Department) dispatching to the Days Inn. I happened to be in the area and responded to assist them,” Bennett said. “I show up and see flames. I ran over to see where I was needed and started going to work.” Bennett quickly made

his way to the inn’s second floor with Liberty police officer Robert Bratcher to help with the building’s evacuation. “There was a lot of smoke, and I could see the fire down the hallway. (Bratcher) comes out with a lady and her kids. I took two children and helped them down the stairs. Then I went back and started clearing rooms,” Bennett said. Wilhelm arrived at the scene as Bennett and Bratcher were helping the family to safety. “I got there about the time I saw Rob coming down the stairs. I assumed other people were upstairs and went up as quickly as I could and started knocking on doors on the north side of the building to get people out,” Wilhelm said. Joined by another Liberty officer, Wilhelm’s evacuation procedures took a sharp change when an inn patron answered their knocks yielding a gun. “I grabbed his arm and pushed him back into the room. He was pretty intoxicated. I cuffed him up,” Wilhelm said.
