Wally Award goes to pastor known for open-door practices By Amy Neal

Smithville High School senior Justin Sweeny, North Kansas City High School senior Garhett Preece and Park Hill South High School senior Scott Cline discuss material options for a cart redesign assignment at Holland 1916 in Liberty. The metal manufacturer is one of four Northland businesses to have partnered with the Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies program created by Northland school districts in its first year. Northland CAPS provides high school students with the opportunity to work in professional settings to promote career exploration and hands-on learning.

Pastor Bob Baier of Antioch Bible Baptist Church is known for his service to others. This propensity to help out whenever, wherever and however he is needed earned him the 2013 Joe Wally Spirit Award from the Gladstone Area Chamber of Commerce. The honor was announced Thursday, Jan. 30, at the chamber’s annual awards celebration at the Hilton KCI. “He is always among the first to step forward to offer his generous assistance to the community, ensuring

a place in the hearts of all who know him,” said Ken Hollander, the previous year’s Wally Award winner. Baier has been a recipient of the chamber’s Business of the Year Award and was the Gladfest parade marshal in 2011. He also has served on the chamber’s Board of Directors, the Gladfest Planning Committee and parade marshal selection committee. Under his leadership, Antioch Bible Baptist also has been actively involved in chamber initiatives, and at Thanksgiving and Christmas, Baier’s church partners with local elementary schools to provide food baskets for families in need. Some of Baier’s most visible acts of kindness and service have come in the wake of natural disasters. He has opened Antioch Baptist’s “doors to the community and offered food, lodging and other resources to anyone affected by ice storms or tornadoes for as long as necessary.” Suzanne McCanles, who was presented at the awards celebration as the chamber’s new chairman, is the head of school at Oakhill Day School. She recounted how Baier made his church available as a temporary home for Oakhill after a tornado damaged the school soon after her arrival. McCanles’ predecessor, Vinnie Vaccaro, spent the past two years as the chamber chairman. He had praise for his replacement. “As a businesswoman, she’s done a phenomenal job at Oakhill Day School,” he said. Among her goals for her term, McCanles said she envisioned continued upgrades and entertainment at Gladfest, a technology audit of the chamber, continued focus on public relations efforts and increased social media presence. Vaccaro said some of the chamber’s accomplishments in the past two years had been

CAPS: Businesses offer students real-world experiences Continued from Page A1 the six school districts working together to develop this program. We knew if we were going to do it, it was going to take all of us to get this done.” With the support of Blue Valley CAPS director Donna Deeds, who will move to oversee the Northland program next year, Northland CAPS was able to welcome 28 students into the pilot program last fall. At the time, students were able to enroll in the engineering and advanced manufacturing, and computing and technology program strands. Weekly CAPS class time is spent on site, as students work together and along side business employees to create products and problem solve. “Being in high school and being able to work here is really cool. You feel like you’re part of an actual company,” Smithville High School senior Justin Sweeny said. Northland CAPS instructor Patrick Dunn said the program allowed students to fully integrate into the company operations. “From the floor, marketing and sales, students get to see it all every day,” he said. “By being at the business and working, they are developing the skills that will put them ahead of their peers.” Northland CAPS additionally provides students with the chance

and the Crossley Customs store front as part of their CAPS activities. Crossley has also had students complete a journal on their experiences. “I love it. It’s fun to have the kids around,” Crossley said. “They want to learn. Everyone sees them and gets an energy boost.” In its first year, Northland CAPS has developed around a mantra of “thinking outside of the desk.” “Thinking outside of the desk means to me, that we want our kids touching and experiencing real-life applications of their knowledge. CAPS is an opportunity to work in real-life experiences outside the traditional walls of a classroom with professionals and businesses,” Liberty Public Schools Superintendent John Jungmann said. “That authentic experience is hard to create in a traditional classroom.” Participating school districts anticipate the Northland CAPS program to grow to 400 students next fall, with the potential for more as the program introduces its global business and entrepreneurship and medicine and healthcare strands. “We’re at the foundation right now, but I want to see it expand,” Crossley said. “I don’t see why a business wouldn’t want to do it. It’s good for the kids and it helps the culture of our business. A program like this, I think, will help the community come together.”

News in Brief 4 seek 2 seats on school board Four candidates will vie for two school board seats on the April 8 ballot in the North Kansas City Schools district. Incumbents Joe Jacobs and Kevin Corlew, former board member Dixie Youngers and newcomer Brian Mercer have declared their candidacy for the three-year terms. Jacobs is the current Board of Education president. All of the candidates live in Kansas City North. Board member powers and duties, qualifications and other information related to board elections is available online at policy. msbanet.org/nkansascity under Section B: School Board Governance and Operations. The last day to register to vote in the April election is Wednesday, March 12.

KCP&L warns of rise in scams Kansas City Power & Light is warning Kansas and Missouri residents of a rise in scams targeting utility customers. Over the past several weeks, both phone and email scams involving customers’ utility bills have been reported. Phone calls from scammers have been notifying customers they are past due on their bills and demanding immediate payment to avoid service disconnection, according to a press release. KCP&L does not use this communication process in respect to disconnection. Emails are also circulating that contain a fake utility bill with a falsified account number and company name, and links to a malicious site. Neither the phone calls nor the emails are associated with KCP&L. If customers ever have questions about the legitimacy of a bill, phone call or email regarding a utility bill, they should contact the KCP&L Customer Contact Center at 1-888-471-5275. Anyone who thinks they have been a victim of this scam should work with

their local law enforcement agency to report the crime. For more information, visit www.kcpl.com/scamalert.

County support boosts KC Zoo attendance The Kansas City Zoo recorded its highest-ever attendance in 2013, with a total of 882,194 guests visiting the Swope Park attraction. The attendance mark was a 7 percent increase from 2012, according to a zoo press release. Zoo attendance had grown in recent years as the facility had invested millions into upgrades and new exhibits including the Helzberg Penguin Plaza that opened Oct. 25 of last year. The $15 million exhibit, which houses more than 40 penguins, was primarily funded by the zoological tax districts in Clay and Jackson counties. In 2011, voters approved the creation of the tax districts to raise $13.5 million for the zoo annually.

Mental health among youth topic of meeting The Clay County Public Health Center will host the SAFE KIDS Metro KC and Metro KC Youth Collaborative quarterly meeting Thursday, Feb. 20. It was a warm late spring day in 2011 when Tara first noticed a swelling on Lily’s neck.

Lily didn’t eat that night, and she began to pace. Tara Prosser knew something was wrong. A discoloration grew in Lily’s eye, and she began bumping into walls. Monday morning, Tara awoke to find that Lily’s condition was worse. She rushed her beloved friend to the local veterinarians, who were completely stumped by Lily’s problem. They advised Tara to take Lily to the Oklahoma State University Veterinary Clinic in Stillwater, 180 miles away, as soon as possible.

CHAPTER 4: Lily’s Illness Four days later, the vets were still unable to diagnose Lily’s illness, and she showed no signs of improvement. The doctors suggested an experimental treatment as a last-ditch effort. Tara agreed to the treatment, hoping it would save Lily’s life.

Though Lily loved road trips with Tara and the Prosser clan, once they arrived in Arkansas, Lily wanted to participate in the training exercises rather than watch as Daisey and the other dogs performed.

Miraculously, it worked! After five days in the ICU, Tara took Lily home! She watched Lily regain her health. Every lick, every bounding step, every morning waking to Lily’s blue eyes

Lily was born to be a SAR dog. She couldn’t stand her newly acquired red shirt status. Watching Daisey train with Tara made Lily nuts. Everyone could see it. Jeff and friends encouraged Tara to let Lily try to work, to let the dog tell her if she was feeling well enough to train, if she was really ready. Tara finally conceded. She would let Lily give it a try. That afternoon, during a training session, Lily found a single baby tooth in the middle of a wide, open field.

Without her purse, extra clothes or money, a friend whisked Tara and Lily to OSU immediately. Lily was checked into the veterinary Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Tara camped out at a local hotel. As Lily’s condition deteriorated, the doctors asked Tara not to visit, so as not to excite the dog.

became that much more precious. Tara had been so close to losing her dog, her partner, her champ.

Days crawled by. Tara lay awake at night waiting for the phone to ring with what she expected to be the inevitable bad news. She was losing her baby. Tara felt entirely helpless. Unable to visit and comfort Lily, unable to diagnose Lily’s mystery illness, it was all she could do to bide her time and wait, as the veterinarians worked on her girl.

Lily eventually was diagnosed with Addison’s Disease. Her adrenal gland did not produce the right amount of certain hormones for her body to function properly. The treatment for Addison’s, as Tara and the veterinarians learned, involves monthly steroid injections.

Lily was not just a dog to Tara. She was a member of the Prosser family. She was an extension of Tara herself, her trusted partner in rescues, her faithful companion at home. Tara couldn’t fathom life without her Lily.

wanted to keep an eye on her. She took Lily along, thinking the dog would be happiest with her family.

She was back in the game.

Dig A Little Deeper!

Lily had led Tara down the road of this search and rescue (SAR) adventure, and she could never be replaced.

One month after Lily’s illness, Tara made plans to take her younger dog, Daisey, a green but enthusiastic pup, to a training weekend in Arkansas. As the day arrived, Tara couldn’t bring herself to leave Lily at home. Lily had regained her old energy, yet Tara was cautious and
