A love story 80 years in the making By Amy Neal The morning routine for John and Nellie Buhman begins with him fixing her breakfast and helping her get dressed. Then they often watch TV while they weave yarn into little hats for newborns hundreds of miles away. That’s how the husband and wife spend their time now. Their first joint activity 80 years ago was a game of pitch. The couple, who celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary in November, first paired up at a church-sponsored card party when he was 23 and she was 15. “She was nice looking and young, and I picked her as my partner,” John said. Their families lived about 3 miles apart in the Clarksville area, so they had met as children. “I remember rocking Nellie in the cradle,” John said in his self-written biography. “I didn’t know at the time that someday I would cradle her in my arms.” Their courtship began after lunch at the card party when John asked to take Nellie home. “I thought he was a nice man, and of course our parents knew each other, too,” Nellie said. Their wedding was a one-ring ceremony at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church

John explains with pride his wife’s efficiency at the factory, how she would complete 12 hours of work in an eight-hour shift. “She was a very hard worker — responsible,” he said. After retiring in the 1980s, they spent time at a mobile home park in Texas and traveling throughout the United States. For the past two years they have worked side by side using donated yarn and a round auto loom to create hats for a infants at a Houston, Texas, hospital. Their finished hats number in the hundreds. “A lot of times Dad starts them, Mom finishes them and Dad makes the pompoms,” daughter Jean Trapp said. In their younger years, John said the pair went to dances and church-sponsored card parties. They also bowled for a time, and he still plays golf. 2 Area Dentists Serve Families In Need in the Northland
February 1,2014 With over 92 families served, it’s done as a duty to help. Helping the families and the future of our community with dental care is something that has become near and dear to Dr. Robert G. Marx. Everyone knows it is important to take care of their teeth, but it is especially important in childhood. When life makes getting treatment difficult, the need doesn’t stop. That is why Dr. Marx began this event some 26 years ago. Since that first year in 1989, the office has seen well over 2,500 children on Have A Heart Day. Today, the need has never been greater. More and more families need help. Northland Dentist’s Robert G Marx and Douglas Arjes offered the 26th Annual Have A Heart Day to the children from the KC Northland area on Saturday the 1st of February. Dr. Marx’s first year for Have A Heart Day was in 1989 when he began with a vision of helping children in need and has fostered the growth of the day each year since. Dr. Marx had the help of three dental students from UMKC Dental School, one of them Dr. Marx’s daughter Emily, who will be joining the practice in the fall of this year. This is a special day providing free cleanings, x-rays and exams for children who have been unable to receive dental care due to many different circumstances along with the economic times. There was lots of fun entertainment provided for the children with KC Wolf of the Kansas City Chiefs, Pinky Lee the Clown and goody bags for all! This is only the beginning of Dr. Marx helping the children that were seen in his office. Many of the children required dental treatment for decay and Dr. Marx & his staff have scheduled all these children back to get these problems handled at little or no cost to the parents for those who need this help.
the Northland, Kansas City Chiefs, Hy-Vee on Englewood, Trader Joe’s in Leawood and Sam’s Club on North Oak. The parents each got a carnation provided by Gladstone Flowers for doing their part in bringing in their children. Rich Corona provided printing of fliers that were distributed throughout the Northland. Shelby Lynne Photography was on hand to take photos of the event for our website and our Facebook page. KMBC 9, KCTV 5 and Fox 4 all came out to do an interview with Dr. Marx for the evening news.
Gladstone, Dr. Marx has grown his practice to include a staff of 25 and expanded several times over the years. “The more we grow, the more responsibility we have to help our community,” says Dr. Marx.
The North Kansas City, Liberty and Park Hill School Districts all participated once again and many of the local pre-schools and community programs were contacted as well. Contributions total tens of thousands of dollars each year in goods, promotion and services provided by Dr. Marx and supportive businesses and organizations for the event. “It’s not about the money, it’s about one’s personal duty to help and that’s what makes it special. The response is always incredible and the joy of that one day is priceless,” says Dr. Marx. He adds, “I can’t cure cancer or make the world a safer place, but I can fix children’s teeth. I like doing that a lot. The children we see are all great kids and they deserve our support and I’m glad I can help out.”
Families at the margins have always been at risk, but now it is not just the less fortunate families that are struggling. There is a group of underserved families in this community that Dr. Marx has reached out to. These parents all showed much gratitude for this service as they were able to get their children the dental care they needed. A mother of 3 children was extremely grateful as the family is unable to afford dental care; she stated in tears, “a program like this is very helpful to our family, she didn’t know how she was going to provided dental care for them this year.” A grandmother was very grateful to be able to bring her granddaughter, who she is helping raise along with the child’s father who is a disabled veteran. She stated she wasn’t sure how she was going to get the little girls’ dental care taken care of.
Dr. Marx explains, “I think dentistry is very important to our overall health & happiness. Each experience at a dental office can affect one’s whole view on dentistry over a lifetime. We started this program so we can have an impact on our kids and ultimately our city.”
Dr. Marx explains, “I love my community and my city. I have lived here my whole life. I like looking into the future and in many ways I feel kids are it!”
When asked what Have a Heart Day means to him, he replied “You hear a lot of discussion sometimes from people wanting to do something and we actually do something to make an impact to change lives.” Dr. Marx adds “It takes a real effort to go from just an idea and bring it into action and I am grateful for the many volunteers and organizations who give us direct support year after year in making this happen.”
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Dental Supplies for the day were provided by Goetze Dental. Each child received a bag with a book in it provided by Mid-Continent Public Library, we filled the bag with additional items provided by various contributors including wonderful gift certificates &/or items provided by the following merchants; Bells’ Management/ McDonald’s in
February is designated as the National Children’s Dental Health Month. Have A Heart Day was named because it connected with the Valentine’s Day theme and Dental Health month. Dr. Marx and his staff are continually involved in many community programs including speaking with children about dental care. As a Dentist for over 30 years at the same location right here in
“The families are always so appreciative, and the kids are always terrific! The sense of satisfaction I get is difficult to express. But it is wonderful! It is very fulfilling. My staff looks forward to Have A Heart Day every year. We have as much fun as the children,” says Dr. Marx.
There were 15-20 children that were seen that had dire immediate dental problems that Dr. Marx will bring back for the much-needed treatment in the coming days and weeks. Dr. Marx has also enlisted the help of his fellow dental professionals that will be helping some of the children as well. Some of the children needing additional help will be seen by dental students at UMKC Dental School, including Dr. Marx’s daughter Emily who is in her 4th year of Dental School. Dr. Marx continues, “That is why I want other dentists to join with us in meeting this challenge. We already receive an extraordinary level of cooperation and assistance but the level of need keeps rising. Our volunteers and donors make all the difference. We are truly fortunate to have so many friends, but we need more health-care providers to join with us.”

The candidates will have the opportunity to meet informally with attendees from 6:30 to 7 p.m. The formal program will begin at 7:15. Educator Shon Adamson will present on three issues facing school districts this year: state budget and tax proposals, teacher tenure and potential student transfers from the Kansas City School District. North Kansas City Schools Chief Financial Officer Paul Harrell will speak about that district’s bond and levy issues on the April 8 ballot. Following these presentations, the school board candidates will be introduced and each given the opportunity for brief comments. The meeting will be in the lower-level meeting

is returning the favor. In September 2013, John and Nellie moved in with granddaughter Julie Trapp in Gladstone after living in St. Joseph for 68 years. She attributes her grandparents’ marital longevity to an emotional connection. “They’re just loving people,” Julie said. Nellie’s explanation is more pragmatic. “We just didn’t believe in divorce or anything like that,” she said. Julie Trapp said she had never heard John, 103, and Nellie, 95 fight. “We were so busy raising our family, we didn’t have time for anything else,” John said.
