To market, to market — yes, twice Gladstone Farmers Market grows to include Saturday and Wednesday shopping By Amy Neal Gladstone Farmers Market shoppers have been asking for Saturday sales, and when the market opens in May, it will be on a twice-weekly schedule. It’s a win-win situation for vendors and customers. “The vendors decided they have the customer base now,” market manager Becky Jarrett said. Both Wednesday and Saturday markets will be in the parking lot on the north side of the Gladstone Hy-Vee at Northeast 72nd Street and North Prospect Avenue. Last year, a mid-season move put the market on the larger, west side parking lot. This year’s relocation will help ease traffic flow and separate parking for grocery store and farmers market customers. About 13 to 15 vendors sell at the market, and most will attend both market days. Shoppers can purchase fresh produce, eggs, jams and jellies, honey, baked goods, jewelry and crafts. Although the plans
haven’t been finalized, Jarrett said it was likely an existing vendor would start offering meat products as well. All goods are produced within 150 miles of Gladstone. “You can feed your family fresh produce six months of the year from Missouri,” Jarrett said. This is the market’s fifth year. About half the vendors have been with the Gladstone Farmers Market since its inception, including Joe and Marla Langeneckert of Morning Dew Acres. Morning Dew uses organic methods to grow a variety of produce. “If I can stick it in the ground and it will grow, I’ll try it,” Joe Langeneckert said. He said he and other vendors he had talked to were optimistic about Saturday sales. “I think it’s going to increase our sales quite a bit,” he said of the extra day. The first week of May through the last week of October, the market will be offered from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot on the north side of Gladstone Hy-Vee, 7117 N. Prospect Ave. About half of the vendors at the Gladstone Farmers Market have been part of the market since it was created in 2010. Fresh produce, honey, eggs, jams, jellies, jewelry and crafts are among the items for sale each week. said the start time each day was firm to allow vendors the time they need to set up their stalls. Once the market is ready for business, shoppers “can expect to talk to the person who picked those vegetables,” Jarrett said. The vendors also are able to tell shoppers how to store, prepare and cook the produce they sell. For anyone new to farmers market shopping, Jarrett offered these tips: • Bring your own bags.

• Come with a small list. • Be open to new ideas. “If they come to the farmers market, they’re going to see a lot of things that you will not see in a grocery store produce department,” Joe Langeneckert said. “Grocery stores, they try to move things they’re going to sell quite a bit of. Somebody like me, I’ll plant a small batch of let’s say some kale or heirloom tomatoes, or heirloom pumpkins or watermelons, things of that nature
— things that you can’t really store and ship across the country.” Customers also should know that prices and supply are not static. The cost of fresh produce is tied to weather and its effects on individual crops, as well as supply and demand. “When it’s tomato season, everyone has tomatoes, and that affects price,” Jarrett said. Between the grocery store and the farmers market in the parking lot,
Jarrett said Wednesday and Saturday customers could make one stop for all of their food needs. She said Hy-Vee had been a good partner for the farmers market. “He’s been very accommodating and agreeable with everything we’ve asked,” she said of store director Gary Swearingen. “He’s been nothing but helpful.” The partnership was a boon to market trade. “After we moved, we had a 73 percent increase in sales,” Jarrett said, adding that on an average market day, 400 to 500 shoppers stop by. The market previously was in Gladstone’s city center but moved last summer to make way for The Heights development.

News in Brief Women with Revolutionary roots celebrate 50th anniversary The William Boydston Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a tea. Among the guests were state officers Corresponding Secretary Cindy Suich and Historian Theresa Risch, and Midwest District Director Linda Sehrt. Also attending the Gladstone chapter’s celebration were members of several other chapters, among them Alexander Doniphan, Clay County Patriots, Independence Pioneers, White Aloe and Prairie. After the ritual, Regent Judy Martin honored former regents and presented them with certificates. Certificates were also given to ladies with more than 20 years of membership. Primary filing opens Feb. 25 The first day to file as a candidate for the 2014 primary and general elections in Missouri is Tuesday, Feb. 25. Candidates for state offices file at the secretary of state’s office, 600 W. Main St. in Jefferson City. This election cycle, that includes candidates for Missouri auditor, eight U.S. representatives,
17 state senators in even-numbered districts, 163 state representatives and various judges across the state. Filing for other offices takes place at the local level. Multiple Clay County offices are up for election. 53rd Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast Christian Community Chorus to benefit Assistance League seeks singers for debut season The 53rd Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast, to be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, will benefit Assistance League of Kansas City. The local chapter of National Assistance League fulfills unmet needs in the Greater Kansas City area through multiple programs operated solely by volunteers. Shirley Bush Helzberg will speak at the breakfast event in the Grand Ballroom of the Kansas City Convention Center, 301 W. 13th St. in Kansas City. Proceeds from the Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast, with an expected attendance of approximately 1,000, will benefit Assistance League programs. Assistance League of Kansas City is supported primarily through income generated by The ReSale Shop, “an upscale thrift store offering quality, gently-used clothing, housewares, furniture, accessories, books, toys” and other items, according to a press release. The shop is at 6601 N. Oak Trafficway in Gladstone. Secondary support comes from donors. Among Assistance League programs is Operation
School Bell, which provides new clothing for children in need, as recommended by local school counselors and social workers. Children arrive at an appointed time to shop for new outfits in a department store-type setting. From September through December of 2013, Assistance League of Kansas City served more than 2,000 elementary school children, in addition to meeting with middle school-aged students at local department stores to provide similar shopping experiences for their new clothing. Another program is Senior Outreach Service. Volunteers from this committee link with six care facilities, providing activities, programs, small gifts and visits. Many members of Assistance League of Kansas City participate in Senior Pals, which links a volunteer with a nursing home resident, sending greeting cards for holidays, birthdays or other special occasions. With no paid staff, the membership of Assistance League of Kansas City for the 2013-2014 fiscal year is 341, including the high school-aged Assisteens.

Roe Bartle and Clair Schroeder in 1961, was the first in the nation to include members of all faiths, communities, races, creeds, national origins and ethnic groups on its steering committee and corporate organization. Lily and Tara were sent to search the Home Depot on Rangeline. Rangeline is the aorta of Joplin, running right through the middle of town, host to major shopping centers, day cares and the high school. The Home Depot was split wide open by the storm, its contents spilling across the ground. When Tara and Lily arrived, they encountered an alien world. It was a foreign war zone. It could not be Missouri. It could not be her hometown. First, there was the lumber. Everywhere. Businesses and trees had simply become piles of wood, strewn about in every direction, as if monsters had shaken life-size Lincoln Logs across the ground. Then there was the glass. It sparkled, a fine sheen across the wreckage, a deceptively dangerous dusting of glittering ice. It could not be avoided. Glass embedded itself in Lily’s paws. The ground was littered with sharp objects. Tara stepped on a nail. She saw twisted metal. Automobiles bent, crushed as easily as tin cans. She saw the impossible, everywhere. Then, there was what was no longer there. Street signs. Stoplights. Roads. Tara used her phone’s GPS to navigate her own town. The daycare was missing. So was the roof of the high school. The park, whole neighborhoods were gone. And every, single tree. It was another planet to Tara and Lily. They slowly picked their way through the wreckage, as they began their search
CHAPTER 6: The Aftermath through the roofless, rickety remains of the Home Depot. More storms rolled in. Lightning flashed in the sky above the roofless store. Dark clouds showered a city that already seemed beyond repair.

Joplin saw no relief. Cold rain poured over the wreckage, followed by a humid, searing heat as rescue work continued.
Looting happened. But goodness happened too. Cases of bottled water were left at stoplights for anyone in need. Residents of neighboring towns arrived bearing food and supplies. Hugs were given freely. Someone painted a single, surviving tree in a smattering of bright colors, hanging birdhouses on every available branch, so that the winged residents of the treeless town could find a perch and a home. Volunteers were everywhere. The President arrived to assess the wreckage.
At first, Tara and Lily, along with other search and rescue teams, searched for survivors. Tara was terrified about Lily’s

She knew that the heat was hard on her furry companion. She worried about the glass in her paws and how her so recently ill body would hold up during the long days of rescue work. Luckily, veterinarians in the area flocked to Joplin, setting up tents to serve as makeshift animal clinics. The vets checked on Lily everyday, making sure she was feeling well and handling the heat. They cleaned the glass from her paws and tended to her needs.

If the minimum wage had kept up with inflation over the past 40 years, workers today would earn no less than $10.75 an hour. Instead, as of 2014 the federal minimum wage is just $7.25 — meaning America’s lowest-paid earners have seen their pay decrease by more than 30 percent over that time. Most Missourians don’t feel that’s right. In 2006, Missouri voters went to the ballot box and voted in favor of proposition B, a new law requiring the state’s minimum wage to slowly increase over time to keep pace with increased cost of living. By doing so, we would prevent another 30-plus percent decrease over the decades to come. The minimum wage would simply remain consistent over time. If it seems like a commonsense idea, that’s because it is. And the people of Missouri agreed, passing proposition B 76 percent to 24 percent — a margin of victory of 52 points. Think about that for a moment: when was the last time we could agree on one side of an issue by a 52-point margin? Ask people if they agree that the Earth revolves around the sun and you won’t get those kinds of numbers. (No, seriously, a February 2014 report by the National Science Foundation found that only 74 percent of Americans agree that it does, while the other 26 percent disagree

These have all been significantly changed or overturned by the legislature in the last five years alone. And don’t forget campaign contribution limits. Voters overwhelmingly passed contribution limits back in the 1990s, and in 2008 the legislature simply eliminated them altogether. Some will argue that direct democracy isn’t the best way to make laws, and that’s a fair debate. But the Missouri Constitution says we have the right to hold direct democratic ballot referendums. If we’re going to have these votes, shouldn’t they count for something? If the legislature is going to completely disregard votes of the people, then what’s the point of even having them? In other states that have ballot referendums, many have some kind of safeguard in place to prevent the legislature from simply overturning the will of the people. In states like Arizona and California, the legislature has to go to a second vote of the people if they want to overturn the first. It’s time we do the same in Missouri. As the minimum wage cost-of-living debate unfolds this year, protecting the progress that was made on that issue back in 2006 will be important in itself. But it will also be about protecting the right of the people to have their vote really mean something.

In 2011, the Missouri House of Representatives debated House Bill 61 — a bill to overturn the 2006 vote of the people. It eliminated the cost-of-living adjustment and acted as if the vote — even with its huge margin of victory — had just never happened. Amazingly the vote in the House was 92-60 in favor of the bill. Fortunately, though, there were not quite enough “yes” votes to override a veto, and so ultimately the bill died. As a result, Missouri’s minimum wage is a quarter higher than it would be otherwise, at $7.50 an hour. Fast-forward three years to 2014 and there are those who want to try it again. While the country at-large debates increasing the federal minimum wage to make it something closer to its historical $10.75 equivalent, forces in Jefferson City would like to see it go in the other direction. Eliminate the inflation-adjustment mechanism, they say, and decrease the wage to $7.25. Although that effort failed last time, there is plenty of precedent to suggest it could happen. Consider the Missouri legislature’s notorious recent history when it comes to respecting votes of the people: Missourians voted to more strictly regulate puppy mills, to finance education with casino money, and to increase new renewable energy production in the state.
