Veterans salute set for Linden Square By Amy Neal A salute to veterans will open the second season of the Linden Square amphitheater. The Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day Celebration will be Saturday, May 24, at the downtown Gladstone venue. The city of Gladstone is partnering with Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 10906 and the Bennet & Dennis Herrick Memorial American Legion Post 626 to present the free, all-day event. A parade of active and retired service members will highlight the festivities at 1 p.m. All active or retired military personnel are welcome to participate. No advance sign-up is required, and uniforms are encouraged but not necessary. “They can just show up that day and participate, and we will be thrilled,” said Paula Brooks, event specialist with the Gladstone Department of Parks and Recreation. Seating will be reserved for veterans who are unable to walk in the parade. VFW Assistant Adjutant Gen. Jerry Newberry will be the parade grand marshal, Brig. Gen. Eric Peck of the Kansas Army National Guard will be a featured speaker and Oak Park High School graduate Susan Hiland of FOX 4 News of will be the event emcee. Activities will include a prisoner of war ceremony,

remembrances for those killed in action, a performance by the American Legion Band, vendors, recruiters, demonstrations and a thank-you ceremony by local Vietnamese immigrants for American veterans. Military collectors will display memorabilia including Nazi artifacts, and British, Japanese and Russian rifles. Replica flags, a flag-folding demonstration and a Vietnam War-era helicopter are expected be on site. “It’s a great learning

opportunity and time for active and retired veterans,” said Richard King, the city’s public information coordinator. Confederate re-enactors will be offering a glimpse of what military life was like during the Civil War — and of local history of the era. “Clay County had great Southern ties,” King said. “Seventy-five percent of men were disenfranchised at the end of the war because of Southern sympathies.” Organizers are hopeful Union re-enactors also will

be on the scene. The day will begin at 9 a.m. at Big Shoal Cemetery. The VFW and American Legion posts bought a flagpole and flags for the cemetery that will be dedicated May 24. In conjunction with the celebration of the armed forces, the Atkins-Johnson Farm & Museum will take part in the Blue Star Museums program that offers free admission for all active duty military personnel and their families on certain dates.

Coalition, with the support of Tri-County Mental Health Services, has partnered with the DEA, law enforcement agencies and other communities across the country to encourage the responsible disposal of prescriptions during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Thursday, April 26. The service is free and anonymous. “The Take Back event offers the community another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs,” according to a press release. Prevention Services Manager Vicky Ward of Tri-County Mental Health Services said that since the first Take Back program was established in 2009, the community’s participation had seen the program grow and expand to include

permanent drop box sites. “We really encourage people to bring their unused prescriptions to any of our drop box locations to be safely disposed of and kept out of reach of our youth,” Ward said. Permanent drop box sites include: • Gladstone Police Department, 7010 N. Holmes St.; open 24 hours daily; 436-3550; • Kansas City Police Department, North Patrol, 1001 NW Barry Road; open 24 hours daily; 437-6200. For those unable to use one of the drop boxes, the following method of disposal is recommended: Remove and shred labels from the bottles. Crush pills and mix them with coffee grounds or kitty litter. Place the mixture in a sealed container and dispose of it with trash. For additional drop box locations, visit www. dea.gov. The drop-off sites will not accept illicit drugs, sharp objects such as needles, radioactive medicines, bio-hazardous materials, glass

Since the transition of authority to issue concealed-carry permits was transferred from the Missouri Department of Revenue to the local sheriff or sheriff’s designee in August 2013, the Clay County department had been issuing temporary laminated paper permits until it received its new card-making equipment. With the arrival of the card marker, the department has begun producing the new concealed-carry permits. Anyone with a temporary laminated paper permit will be able to use the permit until its listed expiration date. Concealed-carry permits will continue to be printed at the same location, 27 S. The American Red Cross will no longer provide flu shots in the Kansas City region. “We were the only Red Cross provider of the flu vaccine in the nation, but with the shots now so available and affordable at numerous locations, we have chosen to focus our programming efforts on our core mission,” the local chapter said in a statement released as the flu season comes to a close. The Red Cross will continue to provide disaster relief services, blood products, health and safety training, and services to the armed forces. The organization still emphasizes the importance of flu vaccinations. “Of course, we will continue to encourage the public — especially the elderly and young — to become vaccinated for the flu,” the statement said.

ANNUAL MEETING

Youth With Vision attends Speak Hard Youth Conference Local students head to Jefferson City for annual substance abuse prevention event Local Youth With Vision Members from Clay, Platte and Ray counties were among the 385 Missouri youth who gathered in Jefferson City for the 10th annual Speak Hard Youth Conference held March 26. The event was hosted by Missouri’s Youth/Adult Alliance at the Capitol Plaza Hotel. Speak Hard is designed to give young advocates the opportunity to learn about underage drinking, substance abuse and prevention. The Missouri Division of Behavioral Health sponsored the event. This year, Speak Hard featured a keynote presentation by motivational speaker Heather Schultz. Miss Missouri Teen USA Samantha Bowers was the luncheon speaker. Morning breakout sessions focused on researched and validated information about marijuana, underage drinking, suicide prevention, drug trends, tobacco and medication abuse, as well as provided instructive information on meeting with legislators. Following the luncheon, participants learned how to effectively use social media in youth advocacy efforts, and applauded eight youth who were each honored

with MYAA’s Outstanding Youth Award. The day’s event concluded with a follow-up visit to the legislators representing the Northland. The Youth With Vision Members had previously met with the legislators at a Prevention Day event in January. The Northland Youth With Vision serves as a youth advisory council for the Northland Coalition, community volunteers in Clay, Platte and Ray counties supported by Tri-County Mental Health Services in its efforts to create safe, substance-abuse free communities. MYAA is the statewide coalition made up of teens and adults that assist local communities in addressing problems with underage alcohol use, the most abused substance by Missouri teens. Since 1997 the coalition has been instrumental in passing local and state level legislation including the passage of beer keg registration, social host/open house parties, and the ban of alcohol without liquid devices. MYAA is program of ACT Missouri, the statewide training and resource center for substance abuse prevention.

Developers of KC Regional Bikeway Plan seek public input T he M id -A me r ic a Regional Council is working with a team of local officials and other stakeholders to develop a Regional Bikeway Plan. The plan will help establish a vision for high-priority bikeway and trail investments across the metropolitan area. The plan will also include an inventory of the current trails

Online tool allows residents to highlight favorite trails, desired trails and bikeways system, along with priorities for improving and expanding the region’s on-road and off-road trails network. Planners are seeking public input through an innovative online WikiMap and a series of public meetings, including one in Gladstone.

Bicycle riders are encouraged to visit the WikiMap at http://wikim ap p i n g. ne t / w i k i m ap/ MARC-Regional-BikewayPlan.html before May 23 to add their input. After providing some basic information about their bicycling habits, users can use mapping tools to

New radio station coming to Northland 102.7 The Hog can be heard online By Dave Hon Soon the Northland’s airwaves will be graced with a new radio station: 102.7 FM KKES The Hog. The radio station has been broadcasting on the Internet since July and recently received its FCC license to broadcast with its call sign and on the FM frequency. Ron and Sylvia Warnerare DJs and hosts of their own weekend shows on the radio station. While their studio is located in Excelsior Springs, the tower for The Hog will be located in Holt. Ron said the station was raising money for the purchase of Emergency Broadcasting System and other equipment. “On Sundays is when we feature our local talk shows,” Sylvia said. “Like one of them is talk tourism. The other one is

The station’s studio is located in Excelsior Springs and will be able to broadcast throughout the Northland. history and legends of the area. We’ve got a variety of things going on on the weekends.” Sylvia said they were looking for more weekend shows and were interested in doing an overnight paranormal segment. All of their shows feature Northland residents. None of them are syndicated. During the week, the station plays classic rock. “It’s all people who are volunteering their time to come in and talk about

something they’re passionate about,” Ron said. “We’re looking for other people in our communities that have a passion for something and want to go on the radio and talk about it.” The Hog is a not-forprofit radio station, unlike most radio stations. Any profit the Warners make above what they put back into the radio station will be donated to charities that help with early childhood development. The Hog is

not a 501©3, and donations to the station are not tax deductible. “All of the dollars that come into 102.7 go right back out into the community in the form of helping youth programs,” Ron said. Ron said the couple had always been excited about starting a radio station but never expected the Northland community to have as much support as it did for the station. “We’re really excited about it,” Ron said. “We’ve had a great deal of support from the community, local businesses and listeners. It’s just been phenomenal.” The radio station has raised just over $1,000 out of its $7,000 goal for all of its broadcasting equipment. “Our studio is pretty well equipped. We’ve got everything we need for the studio. We just need the transmitter and antenna,” Ron said. “So we’re fundraising right now.” To make donations, visit kkesfm.com.

Rich Groves, execu- in North Kansas City. “Our idea is to attract tive director of the North

Northlanders who have an interest in entrepreneurship and to make it more convenient,” he said. “A lot of people in the Northland might not be able to make that journey, but they can come here and participate.” Armour Loft features high-tech audio-visual equipment. With partner LinkCity’s high-speed fiber optic network, the streaming quality should

be excellent, according to organizers. Each week, the 1MC program offers two local entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their startups to a diverse audience of mentors, advisors and entrepreneurs. They make a six-minute presentation then have 20 minutes of feedback. Entrepreneurs gain insight into possible ways they can improve

their start-up businesses and gather real-time feedback. The audience also learns from the presentations. More information on 1MC is available at www. 1millioncups.org. Groves said the Northland push supported the Clay County Economic Development Council’s Strategic Initiative, and would be helpful in supporting the development

LightEdge opens SubTropolis expansion Business Notes Meritas Health ENT has added allergy testing and immunotherapy to its services offered to patients at 9411 N. Oak Trafficway, Suite 202, Kansas City. Patients who suffer from seasonal allergies can be tested for the 48 most geographically specific mold and airborne allergens in the area. The medications, called allergy immunotherapy, are then custom-formulated based on the allergy test results and help desensitize patients to many of the pollens, molds and other triggers that cause symptoms. “The testing is not painful. A tiny comb gently scratches or abrades the skin surface. After the test is performed, it takes about 15 minutes to develop. A positive test will appear as a raised, red bump on the skin, similar to a mosquito bite,” said otolaryngologist Dr. Pierre Podrebarac in a press release. “Skin testing is the oldest and most reliable form of allergy testing. Used for more than 100 years, skin testing continues to be the gold standard for diagnosing allergic disease.” Adults and children over the age of 10 can be tested for allergies. Meritas Health, a wholly-owned subsidiary of North Kansas City Hospital, employs nearly 100 physicians. Established in 1994, Meritas Health has clinics located primarily in Clay and Platte counties.

LightEdge Solutions, a cloud service provider and consulting company, opened the first phase of its 60,000-square-foot underground data center April 16 at the Hunt Midwest SubTropolis Technology Center. The

grand opening event drew several local and state dignitaries, including Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon. T he $58 million LightEdge expansion was made possible through incentives offered by Clay County, North Kansas

City Schools, Kansas City and the state of Missouri. With additional data center development expected to follow the LightEdge project, the Count y Commission and the North Kansas City school district partnered to offer

Studies and will train and place students in the LightEdge workforce. LightEdge, which is owned by The Anschutz Corp., was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa.

Gladstone Dispatch A11 MISSOURI WILDLIFE

Spring bird migration underway By Tom Uhlenbrock Missouri State Parks

They come quietly in the night, announcing their arrival at daybreak by filling the woods with their songs. Wearing their gaudy breeding plumage and singing their loudest to mark territories and attract a mate, the songbirds are among the millions of ducks, geese, swans, cranes, pelicans and other birds that take part in North America’s greatest wildlife migration. Flying from as far away as South America — some travel nonstop over the Gulf of Mexico — they begin arriving in early spring and continue in waves throughout May into early summer. Missouri is in the middle of two of the four major flyways that cross the continent. Many of the birds travel north on the Mississippi Flyway; some detour west on the Central Flyway that follows the Missouri River to the Great Plains. They may rest and refuel for a while in Missouri before continuing their arduous journey north to as far as Canada. Some will stay in Missouri and build nests, joining the year-round residents. Missouri State Parks, especially those on lakes or along rivers, act like magnets to draw the birds. To a weary bird in flight, the parks are a green oasis amid the agricultural fields and urban sprawl below. Some parks have been designated “Important Bird Areas by the Audubon Society and act like rest stops on an interstate for a migrating bird. Parks on both sides of the state have scheduled free events for the public to learn about birds and their migration. Weston Bend State Park, north of Kansas City, has Wings Over Weston on Saturday, May 10, and Sam A. Baker State Park, near Patterson in southeast Missouri, has Birds Over Baker on Saturday, May 31.

The Audubon Society of Missouri and Missouri State Parks, a division of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, have created a website where volunteers list the birds they see in state parks and conservation areas. At mobirds.org, data for state parks is listed at the SPARKS icon. “We’re looking for what birds are seen, where and when, said Edge Wade, a self-described Audubon “birding bum who helped set up the website. “Our parks are particularly good places to see them. The data is valuable to researchers, who may want to track the past and future numbers of a particular species. For land managers, they can see which birds are present, and which aren’t, and make habitat decisions. And for birders, they can see where they might find a special species. “For example, the data base shows 59 reports for winter wren in Rock Bridge Memorial State Park in late March and early April, Wade said. “It’ll be right there on the creek near the parking lot, usually. Asked for her favorite birding parks, Wade listed Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, near her home in Columbia, and Roaring River, Trail of Tears, Van Meter, Meramec and Johnson’s Shut-Ins state parks. “I’ve been to all of them, she said. “Most of our parks are just pretty doggone good.

Prescribed burns mean more birds

Management practices by Missouri State Parks have made park landscapes more attractive to birds. Prescribed burns prevent the invasion of cedar trees, help maintain healthy ecosystems and encourage the return of native grasses and wildflowers, said Allison Vaughn, a natural resource steward with the Missouri Department of Natural

Weston Bend State Park visitors see live bird demonstrations as a part of Wings Over Weston events. Resources. “We’ve now had fire on the ground in state parks for 31 years, she said. Vaughn pointed to the research done by Terry Callahan, a professor at the University of Missouri at Columbia. In the 1990s, he surveyed bird populations in woodlands that had been burned and compared the populations to woodlands that had not been burned. “He found that bird populations not only increased in species numbers, but also in abundance of birds in the burned areas, Vaughn said. For three years, Vaughn replicated Callahan’s work at Ha Ha Tonka State Park, and got the same results — birds increased in species and numbers in burned areas compared to unburned areas. “Part of the reason for that is, whenever a prescribed burn is used in quality woodlands, plants that produce seeds and attract insects are stimulated — the food sources that birds depend on, Vaughn said. “Nesting materials for many species of birds also are abundant in burned woodlands. Fire defines the quality of the woods, Vaughn said, creating light to the woodland floor beneath widely spaced trees with a distinct shrub layer. “A lot of birds use that shrub layer, and it is missing from many unburned

landscapes, Vaughn said. “Woodland structure is shaped by fire. There’s an old growth component that is really beneficial for birds, and state parks have that.

Every color in the rainbow

Birds Over Baker at Sam A. Baker State Park begins at 9 a.m. May 31 with a guided bird hike. It ends at 7 p.m. with a raptor awareness program in which handlers from the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis will talk about hawks, owls and other raptors while real birds fly over the heads of the audience in the park’s amphitheater. Wings Over Weston at Weston Bend State Park runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 10 and will feature guided bird hikes, live eagle shows, falconry presentations, bird banding, native plant sales and some 25 booths set up by volunteers from the Missouri Master Naturalists, Burroughs Audubon and the Wildlife Society at Missouri Western State University. Weston Bend is a part of the Iatan/Weston Bend River Corridor Important Bird Area and is in one of several state parks located on America’s two great rivers, the prime routes for the spring migration. Weston Bend, Van Meter, Lewis and Clark, Big Lake and sections of Kay Trail are on the Missouri River. Big Oak Tree,

Trail of Tears, Confluence and Wakonda are on the Mississippi. “Over 300 species of birds use the IBA corridor and fly through Weston Bend, said Christine Kline, a volunteer who organizes the birding event with Lee Wilbeck of Missouri State Parks. “We have the largest surviving tract of old-growth bottomland forest along the entire length of the Missouri River. It’s the only tract that is the way it was when Lewis and Clark came through. The goal of Wings Over Weston is to recruit a new

generation of bird watchers, Kline said. “Our focus is to introduce birds and birding to children, and teach them about migration and the importance of conservation of habitat, she said. “On the guided bird hikes, they’ll be shown how to use binoculars and where to look for birds. “The children are told that a bird from every color of the rainbow flies through Weston Bend State Park each spring. For more information, visit mostateparks.com.
