Transit van rolls out
Northland assembly plant’s production of new vehicle facilitated by EDC task force By Dale Garrison
The April 30 rollout of the first Northlandbuilt Transit van was a milestone for Ford Motor Co. and its Kansas City Assembly Plant. It also marked a milestone for Clay County Economic Development Council members who began working toward this day nearly five years ago. Gov. Jay Nixon and dignitaries from throughout the U.S. gathered to witness the Transit’s debut in Claycomo. The van, designed to serve everything from emergency medical to recreational uses, also represents a “rags to riches story for Clay County. In the spring of 2009, Ford announced it would end production of the Escape SUV, leaving the plant with only the F-150 pickup and the possibility for the automaker to move that production as well. Such plant closings occurred throughout the country, including in St. Louis. The loss would have represented hundreds of millions of dollars in payroll annually for Clay County alone. Virtually every business in the region would have felt the loss. But within days of the Escape announcement, the EDC formed the Ford 20/20 Task Force. Task Force member and then Missouri legislator Jerry Nolte wrote the Missouri Jobs Act, which offered businesses tax incentives based on actual plant investment and employment. In the summer of 2010, Nixon

The van will be produced at the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo and stamping plant in Liberty. called a special meeting of the General Assembly to get the act passed. The results have been a boon to the local economy. “The Kansas City metro area is a great place to work and do business, and I applaud Ford Motor Co. and all involved for making production a reality today, Congressman Sam Graves said in a statement. “This is
the kind of private sector investment that is going to create jobs, provide more certainty for workers, and help grow our local economy. Ford has added 2,000 high-paying jobs at the plant and plans to add another 800 for a second shift later this year. “The launch of Ford’s new Transit van production and the growth of its F-150
production will bring thousands of jobs to the Kansas City region and $1.1 billion investment to the area, Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt said in a statement. “I’ve long supported this expansion, and I’m glad to see this smart investment bringing jobs and economic growth to the Greater Kansas TRANSIT/Page A10

News in Brief Bowling tourney benefit June 13 Rebuilding Together Clay County will hold a bowling tournament Friday, June 13, to raise funds for its mission of helping disadvantaged residents in the Northland. All proceeds will fund essential home repairs projects for low-income families and veterans, plus safety modifications for seniors and people with disabilities. There are three tournament divisions: open (all ages), church adult and church youth. The deadline to enter is Thursday, May 15. The winners will be determined by combining the dollars raised with the number of bowling pins knocked down. Prizes for the winners include Stroud’s restaurant gift cards, Kansas City Royals baseball tickets and a pizza party. Teams can register and obtain donations by going to www.strikeandsparekc. com. Anyone can enter a team. For more information, contact Clay McQuerry at 781-8985 or
at rtclaycounty@att.net. The Modern Woodmen of America has agreed to support this tournament by matching donations up to $2,500.
NKC library awarded tech grant North Kansas City Public Library has been awarded a $12,489 technology grant to purchase four public literacy computers and four desktop computers. “This grant will allow North Kansas City Public Library to continue to provide Missourians with outstanding resources,” Secretary of State Jason Kander said. “These resources combined with the hard work and dedication of North Kansas City Public Library’s staff help make Missouri libraries among the best in the nation.” The secretary of state’s technology grants are funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the U.S. Institute of Museum and
Library Services, which is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas. In the 2014 fiscal year, the Missouri State Library, a division of Kander’s office, has approved a total of 109 grant applications, distributing approximately $1 million in federal awards to libraries throughout Missouri.
Raffle benefits county museum The Clay County Museum & Historical Society is raising funds for the organization through a raffle. The prizes are two quilts and one throw. Three winners will chose which they prefer in the order they are drawn. The first winner also will receive a free-standing ornamental stuffed bear dressed as a pioneer. The raffle is limited to 100 tickets, which are
available at the museum for $10 each. The quilts and throw blanket also can be viewed at the museum, 14 N. Main St. in Liberty. Museum hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
$5,290 giveaway for MOST 529 Missouri’s 529 College Savings Plan will award one lucky person $5,290 in a MOST 529 account in a giveaway announced by state Treasurer Clint Zweifel. “Missourians are saving more for higher education with MOST 529 than ever before,” Zweifel said. “They know the impact it can have on the lives of children in our state, and this giveaway encourages that commitment. Administration offers the following tips to drivers on how to prevent a fatal crash with a motorcycle: • Although a motorcycle is a small vehicle, the operator still has the same rights of the road as any other motorist. Allow the motorcycle the full width of a lane at all times. • Always signal when changing lanes or merging with traffic. • Check all mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles before changing lanes or merging with traffic, especially at intersections. • Never drive distracted or impaired. Motorcyclists must also take precautions to remain safe on the road. Motorcyclists can increase their safety by following these steps: • Wear a DOT-compliant helmet and other protective gear. • Obey all traffic laws and be properly licensed and trained. • Wear brightly colored clothes and reflective tape to increase visibility. • Ride in the middle of the lane where you will be more visible to drivers. • Never ride distracted or impaired.

EDC insiders, including Ford officials, disagree. “There was nothing automatic about our decision,” said EDC Chair Tony Reinhart, who is Ford’s Midwest/Southern regional

He also will not participate in commencement on May 18. “Smit hv ille School District officials are

Career trajectory leads cargo pilot to auto shop By Amy Neal You could say Doug Scott’s career has shifted gears. He left one field to become a pilot, and when he was grounded after falling off a ladder, it was time to go job shopping again. He purchased a local transmission shop in December 2012. “Life can be full of surprises, and you never know what thing will be in your future, but have an open ear and an open mind,” Scott said. His business, the Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care franchise at 6102 NE Antioch Road in Gladstone, has five employees, and his wife, a certified public accountant, helps with keeping the books. Scott estimates his customer base comes from about a five-mile radius of the shop, quite a difference from his global workplace as a pilot for a freight airline. That job took him to several countries on six continents — he never made it to Australia. Scott flew into landlocked Afghanistan at least 20 times for the U.S. Department of Defense, bringing “anything and everything” to support the war effort there. “They needed a lot of lift to supplement their airplanes,” he said. Humvee tires, generators, truck transmissions and building and plumbing supplies were among his cargo. “There’s nothing there. You have to import everything,” Scott said, adding that transporting supplies through the air to the landlocked country was the most effective. On the return trips, they would load up on equipment that needed to
be overhauled. He hasn’t been back inside an airplane since being injured when he fell off a ladder, although he hasn’t ruled out flying again. For now, his shop keeps him busy. Since acquiring the business, he has been surprised about how sentimental some customers are about their vehicles. He also said he hadn’t anticipated how hard it was to hire qualified mechanics. “Finding a mechanic is as important as finding a doctor,” Scott said. “You want someone who is going to be honest, who you can trust.”

Doug Scott’s career path has lead him to Afghanistan and other overseas destinations as a cargo pilot, and most recently to Cottman Transmission in Gladstone, where he is the owner. Scott, at right, is pictured with shop manager Ken Lee.

Residents of Clay and Jackson counties will be able to see the Kansas City Zoo’s collection of animals, including these Humboldt penguins, for free with the new Postcard to Adventure program announced April 30. The program allows residents to receive one free admission day to the zoo in July, September and November.
Zoo introduces new free-day program By Ryne Dittmer The Kansas City Zoo announced a new free-day program for residents of the Zoological Tax District in Clay and Jackson counties April 30. With the Postcard to Adventure program, residents will have more flexibility in selecting their free admission days from a larger pool of dates in July, September and November. In June, each address in the tax district will be mailed a postcard randomly assigned to Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday free admission days. The postcard comes with a ticket good for one free admission day in each of the selected months, allowing residents to select which of their assigned weekdays to use the ticket. “Our primary goal was to preserve the free day. It got into getting that 1 million people and diving them up. We said we could take onefourth of those people and assign them to a Monday. Right there we cut the rate down one-fourth of what we originally had. Then we

got those days assigned and came up with this idea of the postcard, Kansas City Zoo CEO and Executive Director Randy Wisthoff said. “Now you’re dispersing that 1 million people over what was going to be three additional free days this year, over 48 days. Hopefully it will work into peoples’ schedules. It’s easier to find a time in one of many days than trying to push it into one. Postcard to Adventure replaces the previous program of four pre-selected free admission days open to all tax district residents. The free days had been repeatedly marred by overcrowding and violence, including gunfire during the free day this past March. “It was evident we had issues we needed to solve. We need people to feel safe. When you have over 20,000 people, it gets hard to do, Wisthoff said. To develop the new program, zoo officials met with city and county representatives from Clay and Jackson counties, as well as law enforcement agencies,
