Civil War re-enactors to fire cannons every hour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 6 The Civil War is coming to the AtkinsJohnson Farm and Museum this weekend for the Big Shoal Country Fair. Re-enactors will bring the sights and sounds of the War Between the States to the historic site at 6607 NE Antioch Road with infantry drill demonstrations and cannon firings throughout the day Saturday, Sept. 6. The fair activities will begin at 10 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. that day at the farm and museum. The infantry drills will be at 10, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. The cannons will be fired every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The re-enactors will be camped in the field directly west of the apple orchard on the southwest side of the property. Fairgoers are encouraged to follow the walking trail from the farmhouse toward Big Shoal Cemetery to visit the encampment. Also new to the fair this year are the Missouri Town 1855 dancers, as well as opportunities to milk a cow, rope and steer and test your strength on the Hi-Striker. A few of the returning activities include contests, vendor booths and a petting zoo. Admission to the fair and farm museum are free on Saturday. Some fair activities have a nominal cost. This year the fair is sponsored by DeLaval, Gladstone Hy-Vee, Mid-Continent Public Library and the Midwest Dairy Association.

This fourth week will include information from January through October 1918.

Part 4: Deadly conflict continues

County soldiers head to front lines, lose lives Company H heads to battle of duty from the front lines, After completing a several-month stay at Camp Doniphan in Oklahoma, Company H began its journey to Europe with the 140th Infantry of the 35th Division on April 20, 1918. After arriving in Long Island, New York, the company officially left the United States for Liverpool, England, on April 28. The group would reach Liverpool on May 10, and LeHavre, France, on May 12. Company H was eventually ordered to the Western Front in France, where it spent 48 days. After being relieved

the group was moved to the Saint-Mihiel front to serve as reserves. There the company took part in a By Ryne major drive beginning Sept. 25. County tax prepayments reach $100,000 The Clay County Collector’s Office reached a major milestone in its new tax prepayment program in August, as it surpassed $100,000 in prepaid 2014 taxes. County residents have been able to make prepayments with the program since May. Through the voluntary program, taxpayers may put prepayments toward their real or personal property tax bills. Prepayments must be at least $20 and be made in writing. The collector’s office also requires

prepayments to include a valid parcel number, current address and working phone number. Clay County Collector Lydia McEvoy said the county’s taxing jurisdictions, including school districts, will benefit greatly from the prepayment program, as they will be able to receive funds almost two months earlier than usual. Prepayments will be accepted until the end of September. For more information about the prepayment program, visit the collector’s office website at www.claycountymo.gov/Collector/ Prepay.
