A new event added to this year’s festival is a Freestyle Madness FMX show. Five times throughout the main festival weekend, two motorcyclists will stunt jump and perform for audiences. On Saturday, Sept. 20, they will perform at 2:15, 4:15 and 6:15 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 21, they will perform at 12:45 and 2 p.m. Julie Hedges, festival committee head, said she’s seen the event performed before at the Missouri Association of Fairs and Festivals. “I think they put on a nice show,” Hedges said. “It’s a family-oriented event.” Hedges said the company that performs this event is the same one that performed a BMX show last year. “It’s a new attraction. We’re hoping to add more variety to our show to attract the public,” Hedges said.

Family-friendly show brings horse tricks, entertainment By HANNAH STINE
What do you get when you combine trick roping, bullwhip artistry and a trailer teeter-totter horse trick? The Rawhide and Dusty show. The Jesse James Festival is bringing some family-friendly entertainment on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21, during the URA/MRCA Rodeo. Mark and Cindy Lahmann, from Sullivan, have been entertaining audiences all around the country for the past 15 years after growing up in rodeo entertainment. “We’ve been doing horse show events for most of our lives, so we just naturally grew into horse and rodeo entertainment,” Cindy said. Mark — who goes by the stagename Rawhide — got Dusty 13 years ago when the horse was only 6 months old. And the rest is history. “I had no idea how good he was going to be, but Dusty loves what he does,” he said.
A typical show consists of Rawhide performing target work with a bullwhip while demonstrating several types of whip popping, on and off horseback. Rawhide and Dusty have performed for audiences as large as 30,000 and have been seen on numerous television and radio shows. The show’s claim to fame is in its finale, a teeter-totter on top of the trailer while on horseback. “We want to put everyone on the edge of their seats,” Mark said. Mark and Cindy take pride in the success of the show and its displays it all over the country. “We love what we’re doing and take great pride in what we do,” Mark said. “We have made many friends over the years that are just like family, and we’ve got a lot of family all over the U.S. It really is a wonderful life.” Admission is $10 with free admission for children younger than 5. Saturday’s rodeo begins at 7 p.m. with Sunday’s at 2:30 p.m.

Former Holt resident finds success in PBR By COREY EDWARDS
Spending 8 seconds on a bull has granted Brady Sims opportunities that most 20year olds only dream about. The former Holt resident, in his first full season as a member of the Professional Bull Riders, has already had the opportunity to travel the world while competing with the best riders the sport offers. Beginning at the age of 5, Sims began his venture into the rodeo world. By the age of 9, he already was taming bulls and honing a craft that he has displayed not only in the United States, but other countries as well. “I have been to Mexico, I have been to Australia. I have been literally all over in the U.S.,” Sims said. Last year, after traveling to Australia, Sims became a full-time member of the PBR circuit, and one year in, Sims is rapidly climbing the competitive ladder.
“I am sitting 21st in the world, which doesn’t really matter. My plan when the finals hit is to be top 10 in the world,” Sims said. “I have a lot of work ahead of me. It’s not going to be easy.” Sims is aware his vocation is a dangerous one. Eight seconds on the back of 1,700 -pound beast can seem like an eternity. But Sims clears any thoughts of fear from his psyche, saying that his only thought while riding is focus. “There have been a few (close calls) with the riding aspect,” Sims said. “If you slap a bull with your free hand, you don’t get a score. I have had that happen I don’t know how many times. It could be 7.5 seconds and you will just slap him or he will come up into you, and you don’t end up winning because you don’t get a score. You are so close that you can feel the victory, you can feel the money in your hand, and then all

of a sudden it’s all gone … Once you get to that 7-second mark, you have to try harder than you did during the last 6. You have to always keep trying or those moments will happen.” Sims comes into his rides confident. He spends countless hours preparing his body and mind for just seconds of action. “It’s just like anything else you do, you have to dedicate your entire life to this,” Sims said.

New bleachers help improve the view at demolition derby
75030771
This year’s demolition derby will start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Jay Hedges, one of the organizers of the event, has been involved since it started. “I used to drive them when I was a kid,” Hedges said. “They’re a lot of fun. It’s good, clean, fun, good entertainment for the crowd.” Hedges said about 30 cars usually participate in the derby. Cars compete in the modified class, stock class and compact cars class. “It’s a lot of fun. We’ll have some good food and good entertainment,” Hedges said. “It’s pretty cheap entertainment for what things cost nowadays.” The derby costs $10 for admission. Sign-ups for participation take place the day of the event. New bleachers have been added to accommodate the larger crowd the event drew in last year. “The people help support us, and we put it back into the park and into the festival,” Hedges said.

The race will start at the intersection of North Grove and Boude streets. “It seems like they continuously repave our course,â€? James said. “I’m awful pleased with that.â€? James has been organizing the event since 1999. “It was a lot of work that first year,â€? he said. Funds raised will benefit the Jesse James Festival grounds and the Hero’s Monument Foundation. “We just figured that was a very worthy cause,â€? James said. The 5K/10K participants will each receive a T-shirt and swag bag. Chip timing will be used, and awards will go to the top three runners in each five-year age group. The entry fee is $30. Kids makes the catch
Kids compete with cuteness
The Kids Fishing Tournament, part of the Jesse James Festival in Jesse James Park, will fly off the pole at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 21. The event is free for children to participate in. Organizer Josh Tipton encourages kids to bring their own poles and bait, although he will have a limited supply of both. Tipton said sign-up for the event occurs that day. Awards will be given to the top three fishers in the two age groups: 6 and younger, and 7 to 12 years old. Goodie bags will be given out to the children, and a drawing for more prizes will also take place. “Honestly, every year, we get more and more kids,” Tipton said. One year, Tipton said, it started to rain during the tournament, but the kids refused to give up and kept fishing. “That was cool to have the kids want to fish in the middle of the rain as opposed to wanting to give up because they’re wet,” Tipton said.
The Jesse James Festival’s Little Mr. and Miss contest is scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Kearney Feed & Supply, 300 W. Washington St. The deadline to enter the contest is Saturday, Sept. 13. Application forms can be found on the festival website, www.jessejamesfestival.com. There will be three classes of competition: ages 2 to 3, ages 4 to 6, and ages 7 to 10. The contest is free for those who wish to participate. Registration forms can be mailed to Ellyce Grassley at Salon 905, 905 W. Missouri Highway 92, Kearney, MO 64060. Forms can also be emailed to e.grassley@hotmail.com. Entrants will ride in the Jesse James Festival parade and must be accompanied by an adult. Judges for the contest will be brought in from outside of Kearney to retain impartiality.

Smoking to success Kearney contestants prepare for contest By DAVE HON
Local barbecue aficionados are gearing up for the Jesse James Festival contest. Mark Badami, a member of WTF BBQ, said he’s participated in the Jesse James contest on and off for the past six years but has never won. “I’ve been barbecuing for about four or five years, and I’ve got a couple of guys to help me out this year,” Badami said. “We work well together.” The addition of these new team members, Badami said, will increase his odds of winning the contest. Badami and his team purchase their rubs, and think that brisket and ribs are their strongest category to compete in. “We’ve practiced a lot with brisket and ribs,” Badami said. Badmi said he enjoys having fun at the contest and letting others eat the leftovers that the team has.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Badami said. “We get the group of guys together and kind of hang out. It’s almost like a tailgate atmosphere.” Devin Clawson, a member of team Sweet Heat BBQ, is entering the Jesse James contest for the first time after attending previously. Clawson, who has 20-plus years of barbecuing experience but has never competed before, said he’s excited for the contest. “We’re really gearing up to have a good time,” Clawson said. “We’ve barbecued for friends and family over these 20 some years, and we decided why not try to enter a contest and see where we sit.” Clawson said his strength will be his ribs because they seem to be everyone’s favorite. He describes his ribs as sweet and rich with a little kick. “Kind of all-around good,” Clawson said. The 27th annual Jesse James Barbeque Cook-Out (25th annual Show-Me State Championship) is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society.
