Spent shell casings were used to make trench art like this plate in David Smith’s collection. The carvings indicate it was made in 1914-1915, during World War I. Smith also owns a letter opener made from bullet casings that were heated and bent to look like a miniature scimitar.

You just have to be smart about it and mature about it. Richard King, Gladstone’s public information coordinator, also emphasized the need to preserve even the unpleasant events of our past. “If you don’t work to keep (hate) out of society, it becomes a pervasive problem that destroys lives, King said. The badge at right from the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin was for a referee or judge.

This 1944 bayonet would have been mounted on a German rifle. Each scabbard and blade had the bayonet’s serial number, as well as information about when and were it was manufactured, imprinted on them. “The Germans especially kept meticulous records on everything, collector David Smith said. The serial number of this bayonet can be seen at the top of the scabbard.

This Sturmabteilung presentation dagger was found in a river by Soviet soldiers marching west, then acquired by an American solider fighting in World War II. The American GI’s family later sold it at auction, where collector David Smith bought it. The Sturmabteilung, or SA, was the a Nazi paramilitary wing. It was essentially the precursor to the Schutzstaffel, or SS.
