Military memorabilia provides visual history lesson Collector to be at salute to veterans May 24 at Linden Square By Amy Neal A former Air Force staff sergeant will be at Linden Square with an arsenal of military memorabilia Saturday, May 24. David Smith will display some of his collection of artifacts from World War II and other armed conflicts, dating back to the Civil War, at the Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day Celebration. The city of Gladstone, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 10906 and the Bennet & Dennis Herrick Memorial American Legion Post 626 will present the free, all-day event. Planned activities include: • 9 a.m. flagpole dedication at Big Shoal Cemetery; • 1 p.m. parade featuring active and retired service members — AMY NEAL/Staff Photo no advance sign-up required; • 7 p.m. The Bucket Band concert. 4-county operation nets 851 violations A Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program truck check was conducted May 7 to 9, in Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties. This operation was conducted by commercial vehicle enforcement troopers, commercial vehicle officers and commercial vehicle inspectors from Missouri Highway Patrol Troops A, B, C, D, F and H. The operation was a joint effort with officers from the Kansas City Police Department’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit. The goal of the operation was to remove unsafe commercial vehicles and unqualified or impaired drivers from Missouri roadways. Officers set up numerous checkpoints and stopped commercial motor vehicles to conduct random driver and vehicle safety inspections. During the three-day operation, officers performed 446 inspections with 851 violations discovered. There were 28 drivers and 68 motor vehicles placed outof-service. In addition, officers issued 155 citations and made two misdemeanor warrant arrests, two felony warrant arrests, one misdemeanor drug arrest and one felony drug arrest.

Hochstatter retires from Army A retirement ceremony for Gladstone native U.S. Army Maj. Daniel R. Hochstatter was held April 24 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He has served 20 years in the Army, and his retirement is effective June 30. Hochstatter is a 1989 graduate of North Kansas City High School. He attended college at the University of Central Missouri, where he received a Bachelor of Science in aviation technology and his commission as a second lieutenant, Quartermaster Corps, through the UCM Fight Mules Reserve Officer Training Corps Battalion in 1994. career opportunities. Each master gardener is trained by University of Missouri Extension specialists. Garden ’N Grow will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays June 2 to Aug. 7 at two

The Kids Triathlon will swim, bike and run in Gladstone again Saturday, May 31. For the seventh year in a row this event will bring 200 kids ages 6 to 14 to the Gladstone Community Center to compete. The race will begin at 9 am and will be broken up into three age groups. Participants 6, 7 and 8 years old will swim 50 yards, bike 1.5 miles and run a quarter mile. Participants 9, 10 and 11 years old will swim 100 yards, bike 1.5 miles and run a half mile. Participants 12, 13 and 14 years old will swim 200 yards, bike 3 miles and run 1 mile. The registration fee is $40 before Saturday, May 18, and $55 after that date. Registrations are due by Friday, May 30. Packet pick-up and a course orientation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 30 at the community center, 6901 N. Holmes St. Registration forms are available online at www. gladstonecommunitycenter.com or at the front desk of the Gladstone Community Center. Each scabbard and blade had the bayonet’s serial number, as well as information about when and were it was manufactured, imprinted on them. “The Germans especially kept meticulous records on everything,� collector David Smith said. This Sturmabteilung presentation dagger was found in a river by Soviet soldiers marching west, then acquired by an American solider fighting in World War II. The American GI’s family later sold it at auction, where collector David Smith bought it. The Sturmabteilung, or SA, was the a Nazi paramilitary wing.
