Sheriff’s Office gets new armored vehicle Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle obtained through no-cost distribution program

By Ryne Dittmer Standing 10 feet tall, 9 feet wide and 16 feet long, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office’s recently acquired Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle has a commanding presence on the road. But beyond its size, sheriff’s office personnel are expecting the new vehicle to deliver a boost to the department’s emergency response and rescue operations. “This is going to be a big assistance when you show up on the scene, Capt. Matt Hunter said. “It’s going to be a multipurpose tool. This is basically a rescue vehicle. It’s nice that we have this available to us at any point. Hunter said the BAE Caiman MRAP would provide the department’s Special Tactics and Response Team with extra protection when responding to an active shooter

The vehicle has been in the possession of the sheriff’s office since late April and was acquired through a military surplus distribution program from the Defense Logistics Agency. “They brought all

the MRAPs back from Afghanistan and refurbished them to send them back (to war), Sgt. Steve Copp said. When the vehicles were not shipped back overseas, DLA began distributing them to law enforcement agencies around the country. Copp said the sheriff’s office completed a lengthy application process to receive the MRAP and

No red trash bags for K.C. residents The Kansas City Public Works Department advises residents to avoid using red trash bags for disposal of

household garbage. The department has been informed that an individual has been selling red bags door-to-door to residents. A number of those residents have purchased and used the red trash bags for household trash collection and disposal. City crews cannot collect red bags left on the curb. Red trash bags are normally used to dispose of hazardous biological waste. “Very specific disposal methods have to be used for biological waste, and private services contract with individuals for biological waste disposal,” said Michael Shaw, solid waste services manager. “We can’t just throw it in the landfill.” To learn more about the City’s household hazardous waste, recycling, tire and leaf/brush drop-off sites, please visit www.kcmo.gov/trash.

Clay County deputy struck in vehicle during pursuit A Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy was struck in his vehicle by a suspect fleeing a police pursuit Wednesday, May 28. The collision occurred at 12:40 p.m. near the intersection of Parvin and Chaumiere roads, just west of Chouteau Trafficway in Kansas City. Lt. Will Akin with the sheriff’s office said the deputy was in the area helping secure schools when the deputy’s vehicle was struck by the suspect. “The suspect vehicle came out in the area where he was and appeared to intentionally run right into the deputy’s vehicle,” Akin said. During the pursuit, Akin said the suspect also drove through several yards, hitting at least one house. The deputy reported neck and back soreness and a headache at the scene, and was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation, Akin said. The deputy was discharged from the hospital shortly before 4 p.m. The suspect was caught after the collision, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
