The Kansas City Connector Project 2017 Top Connectors in Education & Entrepreneurship
1
Cities expand and develop with the ebb and flow of population changes and the resources they bring to bear in solving social and economic challenges. And with this organic growth and the challenges that arise, civic opportunities are naturally, if unevenly, distributed. This pilot project identifies resource gaps and suggests how they can be bridged by leveraging the “human connection that already exists within a community. Project goals are to assess, advance and accelerate where possible educational achievement and entrepreneurial success, two important hallmarks of the greater Kansas City area. 2

MARK BEDELL KANSAS CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Dr. Mark T. Bedell is one of the top young educational leaders in the United States. His personal, educational and career experiences make him uniquely suited to serve as Superintendent of Kansas City Public Schools in Kansas City, MO. He is a talented, caring teacher and administrator who is doing the hard, systematic work necessary to ensure that every child and every family has an equitable opportunity of making their dreams a reality.
His background, classroom and school experience and singular leadership at BCPS made Dr. Bedell a natural choice for the Superintendent’s post at Kansas City Public Schools in 2016. He came to the school system committed to listening to and learning from students, parents, staff and community members. Dr. Bedell devoted hundreds of hours to public engagement in the first few months of his tenure. With stakeholder guidance, he crafted and enacted a post-entry plan, which made the central office more effective and efficient, improved School Board governance, and increased staff morale. He has forged innovative partnerships on behalf of students and families. These partnerships include: the Sprint 1Million Project, which provides wifi hotspots free of charge to students whose families cannot afford internet access at home; and the Plaza Comunitaria, which links programs and services from the Consul-
