WORDS OF

WISDOM

Hello Lyceum Community!! What a term it has been! First and foremost, I would like to thank the entire Lyceum Anuradhapura community for your compassion, patience, understanding and support throughout what has been a very different Term. It seems like only yesterday that the school was closed due to COVID-19 pandemic. As a school leadership team, we have been immersed in the COVID-19 pandemic since March. We reached out to the students virtually via various communication tools. On behalf of the LA community, I would like to thank students and families for the diligence and care for others that they demonstrated from the outset to self-isolate and protect our local community from the COVID-19 virus. I would also like to thank all of the magnificent LA staff. The school’s response to the current and emerging challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic has very much been a team effort and I would like to thank every single member of staff for their efforts to maintain a sense of calm and consistency for our students and their families. It needs to be acknowledged that for teachers and office staff, this has been a stressful time. This stress has been eased somewhat by the strong show of appreciation and support from within our parent community, that is clearly shown through the social media and so on. The Mirror Wall on Facebook Page initiative which saw parents' commenting make us feel both valued and cared for–THANK YOU! I hope that all students will enjoy the holiday break as an opportunity to relax, switch off from online school and focus on their own wellbeing.

Regards Principal

FROM OUR FOUNDER, DR. MOHAN LAL GRERO

When Bill Gates attended Elementary school, he was a typical nerdy 4th-grade introvert who always did his best to keep to himself. Thanks to a kind librarian named Ms. Blanche Caffiere, he was able to come into his own in a way that would one day change the world forever. Here's how Bill Gates remembered this kind soul. "When I first met Mrs. Caffiere, she was the elegant and engaging school librarian at Seattle’s View Ridge Elementary, and I was a timid fourth grader. I was desperately trying to go unnoticed, because I had some big deficits, like atrocious handwriting ... and I was trying to hide the fact that I liked to read—something that was for girls but not for boys ... Mrs. Caffiere took me under her wing and helped make it okay for me to be a messy, nerdy boy who was reading lots of books." He credits Mrs. Caffiere for helping him escape his shell in the true spirit of exceptional teaching. First, she encouraged Gates' passion for reading by helping him explore it through the use of introspective questions, such as what he liked to read and why. Next, she'd go out of her way to source books that were progressively more interesting and challenging for him. Finally, once he’d read them, she would sit down with him and ask him if he liked what he had read, and more importantly, what he'd learned and why. "She genuinely listened to what I had to say," Gates recalled. In 2006, shortly after reaching her 100th birthday, Blanche Caffiere sadly passed away—but not before Gates was able to thank her personally for the lasting impact her love and curiosity had on his life.

Vision To produce global citizens who will reshape the future of their motherland. Mission

To enhance the potential of every young soul that passes through our halls, empowering them to be the best they can be.

Where ever you are placed in life you have the potential to be an influence. As we can see in the above story this kind librarian may have never thought that she was helping a genius. She inspired the young Bill Gates to look beyond his difficulties. Dear children find that source of inspiration in your life or be the one to inspire the next great person.

Learning about letters 

Show your child a letter shape and say the sound. See how many times he or she can find the same letter on the page or in the book .

LEAVING CERTIFICATES All students who leave school are kindly requested to get their leaving certificates as soon as they leave school. Please note that all fees and other dues must be settled before applying for the leaving certificate.

Students who are siting for any exams through school should wait until their exams are over and receive their results before applying for their leaving certificates. Leaving certificates should be obtained within a year after leaving school

Use magnetic, foam or plastic letters for matching games. Show your child a letter and ask him or her to find another the same. Talk about the shapes of letters ('round', 'tall'). Match capitals with lowercase letters. Look at two letter shapes that can be confused: for example, 'n' and 'h'. Ask, 'What is the same?', 'What is different?'

Write letters using different media (crayon, paint, pencil). Or write a letter in a sand tray, saying the sound as you write. Ask your child to trace over it.
