what is BS EN-1729 BS EN-1729 is the European standard for classroom tables and chairs which are intended for use in UK schools. BS EN-1729 was introduced in December 2006 and is the only current and valid standard for classroom furniture. The Standard is in two parts and covers:

Size and shape of products • Defines and standardises many functional dimensions • Ensures correct ergonomics for children’s back care to encourage good posture

Strength and stability • Defines and standardises parameters for safe products • Defines strength and stability parameters for FIRA and other testing organisations to help regulate and elevate product preformance • Products will stand up to the demands of a modern classroom Any product must pass BOTH parts to be fully compliant with BS EN-1729.

why is the standard still new? Since the last standard was introduced many years ago the average size of children has increased dramatically. As a result furniture sizes need to increase. It is also the case that differences in height between children of a similar age has increased. To accomodate this you should be considering that height adjustable tables and chairs may be appropriate. There is now a better understanding of the need for children’s furniture to be ergonomically correct. The new European standard requires furniture to be properly shaped to help prevent long term damage to children’s backs. So when selecting new products for your school, look for those certified BS EN-1729 as this will provide you with the confidence that these products will stand up to the rigours of school use.

The new table and chair sizes are typically 10â&#x20AC;&#x201C;20mm different to the old sizes and their heights will probably not match up with existing furniture in your classrooms. Also old and new chair sizes may not stack together perfectly.

do I have to throw away my current furniture? No. But as you buy new furniture you ought to consider changing to products which comply with BS-EN-1729. See our buying guide on pages 392 to 395 for further details.

If your existing chairs and tables have colour coded feet, DO NOT rely on these colours for ordering new furniture. BS-EN-1729 has changed some of these colours from those in the previous standard.
