Forget the New Year ’s resolutions because, many times, we fail at those. Instead, think of a goal you have for yourself

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU n Words: Tracey English

How to succeed at your goals for the new year and rock 2014!

ew year’s resolutions. Hate ‘em! i mean, really, why, at the start of a new year, do we fall prey to the pressure of doing something to make this year “better than last year?” you know what i told myself i was going to do, beginning January 1, after all of my mom’s homemade cut-out cookies were gone and ingested by yours truly? (seriously, these cookies are to die for! i can pass on other sweets throughout the holidays, but nOt these cookies. they are the death of me!)

14

i told myself i would give up sugar. guess what i had for breakfast this morning? Whole wheat waffles (healthy), with strawberries (healthy), bananas (healthy), and, yup – syRUP! not the sugar-free kind either. nope. it was loaded with sugar. guess i failed tHat promise! But you know what? i didn’t fail. i fell. and i got up. and i’ll keep on trying to get rid of some sugar from my diet. But i won’t beat myself up if i fall again.

after all, we only learn by failing. so, that being said, how many of you are sitting idle, thinking to yourself that you really should do

Kansas City Fitness Magazine • JANUARY 2014

something to get healthier, fitter, happier? sadly, how many of you have resigned yourself to thinking that you “have failed” in the past and, therefore, cannot try again? if you are like millions – millions of other americans – you are not alone.

Forget the new year’s resolutions because, many times, we fail at those. instead, think of a goal you have for yourself, and give yourself the time, the energy to try to reach it, regardless of how long it takes you to reach it.

“EVEN THOUGH IT’S PAST JANUARY 1, THERE IS NO REASON YOU CANNOT MAKE A RESOLUTION TO YOURSELF TO COMMIT TO LEADING A HEALTHIER, MORE VIBRANT LIFE.” Want to get off the couch and run a 5K? Post it to your Facebook page and i bet you get some others interested in trying it with you. it’s amazing how publicizing a goal holds you accountable to it, too!

start? Many fitness facilities will hook you up with a personal trainer who can work with you to design a program that you can do on your own at home. Really.

interested in learning how to cook healthier meals for your family? Visit your local grocery store and inquire about cooking classes. in Lawrence, the Community Mercantile (www.communitymercantile. com) offers classes throughout the year that focus on this very topic.

you see, even though it’s past January 1, there is no reason you cannot make a resolution to yourself to commit to leading a healthier, more vibrant life. Forget that on December 31, you didn’t have a goal in mind – get one in mind now and go after it. you are worth it. you are capable of achieving great things. you simply have to believe in yourself to get yourself there.

simply want to feel better about yourself, physically and emotionally? Design your own at-home workout and WRite down how you feel when you complete it. the internet is full of at-home workout ideas that can help you get started. still not sure how to

now, i’ve got to go and find something sugar-free to snack on. thank goodness those cookies are gone! all the best in health!

Practicing on an indo yoga Boa requires m rd uch more focu s, balance a concentra nd tion if you were than on a mat.

A NEW KIND OF YOGA

INTRODUCING THE INDO YOGA BOARD, A NEW AND FUN WAY TO TRY YOGA! i’ve never been someone who’s adventurous about trying new things, especially when i’m comfortable doing something a certain way. it took me years to finally try yoga. even after i first started doing yoga, it took me a few weeks to finally get comfortable. a few months ago i actually stepped out of my comfort zone by trying yoga on an indo yoga Board for the first time. the indo yoga Board is similar to stand up paddleboard yoga, or sUP yoga, only it’s done on land instead of water. the indo yoga Board is six feet long and 15 inches wide and sits on four rockers that are attached to the bottom. the rockers lift the board off the ground and make it tilt, just like a real paddleboard does in water. according to the indo Board website, the indo yoga

16

Kansas City Fitness Magazine • JANUARY 2014

Board’s unique feature is “the various levels of instability that accommodates all abilities of users from beginners to the most advanced yoga practitioners.” the main difference between practicing yoga on a board and on a mat is, of course, the unstable surface that creates a more challenging practice. Practicing on an indo yoga Board requires much more focus, balance and concentration than if you were on a mat. if the mind starts wandering and thinking about something else, then the body starts wandering off the board towards the floor. even if you do fall, it’s all part of the fun and you’re just glad you fell into “imaginary” water. Most of the time you’re too focused on staying balanced, so falling doesn’t happen. Learning and

practicing how to focus in yoga also helps improve focus in all aspects of life, too. Practicing yoga on the board increases core strength. instructors use the word “core” a lot in yoga and fitness classes because a strong core is the foundation for everything. the core is made up of the abdominal muscles, lower back muscles, pelvic floor and hips. the core supports the back and helps with back pain. When practicing on the indo Board, the body activates more muscles to stabilize the body. the next day after trying yoga on the board i noticed muscles in different parts of my body, especially my abdominal muscles and lower back muscles, that usually aren’t sore after yoga were sore. it was a satisfying kind of sore though because i knew my body worked hard. i can definitely say that i’m looking forward to the weather getting warmer so i can take my indo yoga Board practice and try it out on an actual paddleboard in the water somewhere.

KIDS, WORK, FLAT TIRE, LIPSTICK MELTED, IT WAS SNOWING, ARM HABITUALLY KEEPS SHOVING FOOD IN MOUTH, BLAH BLAH BLAH.

don’t mean to come off like I don’t care, because I do care. I care deeply about my clients’ success, mainly because of my own ego…if i don’t make you look good, it makes me look bad…and it is all about me. #just kidding #not really.

Dads give everything to our jobs; going in early staying late, providing and protecting. We give so much to others we don’t have anything left to give to ourselves. When in reality if we were to give more to ourselves, we would have more energy for the other things in our life.

Why are our waistlines growing larger? We blame everything because we give everything. Moms give everything to their family; cooking, cleaning, chauffeuring, cheerleading, among other C words.

stop right now…wait don’t stop reading… after reading this go look in the mirror. the person you see is the only person you may blame.

FOCUS ON YOURSELF. FOCUS ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY. ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS. ELIMINATE EXCUSES. 18

Focus on yourself. Focus on your weight loss journey. eliminate distractions. eliminate excuses. if you decide to take this step, be prepared. it won’t be easy. it never is easy to change the habits we’ve created.

Don’t drink your calories, stick with water. now for the entrée. you choose chicken and grilled vegetables. great Job! you get the idea. take it one action at a time. you control each meal. you control each workout. you are in control. it feels good to have this much power, doesn’t it?

ESSENTIAL STUFF WHEN BRAVING THE ELEMENTS...

‘TIS THE SEASON TO BIKE.

Adjust Your Mindset: Riding through the

snow is obviously slower and harder than what you’ll experience the rest of the year. you can’t go into snow biking thinking that you’re going to be ripping around corners and hammering up hills. instead, focus and experience being out there...it’s more about the adventure of where you are.

Change Your Pedals: even in great snow

conditions, you’re going to spend time on and off the bike. Clipless pedals will quickly pack with snow and ice. instead, swap out to flat pedals and wear winter boots to keep your feet warm. you’ll be able to walk when you need to, which will save you from a huge headache and your feet will stay warmer too.

Let the Air Out: tire pressure is the number one thing you can control that can make or

20

STRAP ON YOUR HELEMT AND GATHER THESE ITEMS TO HAVE A SAFE AND SUCCESSFUL RIDE. break your ride. if you’re wallowing in the snow, let some more air out. if you’re riding on completely snow-covered trails, you can let your tire pressure down extremely low. the rule applies even if you don’t have a fat bike made for winter riding; 2 or 3 psi can be the difference between riding and walking.

Spin More, Worry Less: you can only be as aggressive as the surface allows—and in snow, that usually means you’re not going to be jumping up to sprint, standing to get up climbs, or generally thrashing around. some advice: shift into a gear that lets you keep a comfortably high cadence, take a seat, and spin down the road.

LeD and rechargeable light

Be Ready to Wander: in snow, the sweet

spot—where conditions are perfect for floating along—can be tough to find. there may only be a small section that has the right conditions to ride on...it’s okay to wander back and forth to find it. at the same time, playing with the way you distribute your weight is key. if the snow is crusty, shift more weight to the front of the bike so you can stay on the crust without breaking through; if it’s wet and mushy, shift to the back so you can get better traction. experiment...it’s what winter riding’s all about.

i was a very large man. i am 6’5 and in a 5XL t-shirt and size 50 jeans. i drank over 2,000 calories in soda a day. i ate two breakfast sandwiches and two jelly filled doughnuts every morning for breakfast. i would eat school lunch and snack all day. at night, i would eat my kids’ snacks they were supposed to take to school the next day. Here i was teaching students and athletes discipline and hard work when i had none myself. i would come home after practice and ignore my wife and young children and sit in front on the tv and fall asleep there. My wife was always concerned for my health and constantly begged me to change and i ignored her. i finally told her one day that i was gonna die in 10 years anyway, so leave me alone. One day, my oldest son, who is 6 years old, was helping me fold laundry and he was counting the X’s on my shirt. He said, “Wow Dad, did you know there are 5 X’s on your shirt? that’s a lot!”

His comment hit me like a ton of bricks. Here i was concerned with what type of cupcakes i was gonna eat later instead of worrying about my kids growing up without a father. How selfish am i? i knew i had to change. i knew that i wanted to lose weight but i didn’t know where to start.

With the exercises working, i completely changed my eating lifestyle. i tapered my soda intake to eventually none after a week. i switched to water and Diet golden Peak ice tea. i ate every two hours offsetting my protein and fruit. For breakfast, i ate three hardboiled eggs and greek yogurt. For lunch, i ate a spinach salad with 2oz of shaved turkey. For dinner, i ate grilled chicken or fish. i would prepare all my meals the night before so i wouldn’t eat anything that wasn’t in my nebraska Cornhuskers lunchbox. the first few weeks were really tough for me. i believed in the 21 days of habit. if i could do this for 21 straight days, it would become a healthy habit. i left my wallet at home so i couldn’t go to the school snack machine. i didn’t eat with my fellow teachers in the cafeteria because i knew i would want to eat the cafeteria food. i ate in my room by myself. Once i gained enough confidence in myself, i began to eat with them and i brought my wallet to school without going to the snack machine. after the 12 weeks, i had lost over 80 pounds and went from size 50 jeans to size 42. i went from a 5XL t-shirt to a 2XLtall t-shirt. Oh, and i won the 12 week program. i started the contest at 396 and ended at 316.

i was an athlete in high school and college so i have always been competitive and i hated losing. My wife knew this, so she signed me up for the Kansas City Weight Loss Program through “Kansas City Fitness Magazine.” it’s a 12 week program that teaches you to eat healthy, exercise and more importantly, getting your life back. it also promoted competition between the contestants, which is what i needed. at the time, there was no personal trainer in my small community of 1,200 people so my trainer was our elementary Pe teacher and football coach, ty Ratliff. We worked out in the high school weight room and the Heartland Rec Center for 12 weeks. We focused on Hiit training and interval running. Being over 400 pounds, i just focused on moving.

today, i have lost over 120 pounds in 9 months. i have lost over 40 inches and over 30% off my body. i am as strong and healthy as i have ever been. i recently purchased my first XL t-shirt since 1997 (freshman year in high school). i have recently ran my first 5K in time of 27.02. i am currently speaking to groups and businesses about my weigh loss journey. i never realized the inspiring ripple effect my journey has had on others. thank you to “Kansas City Fitness Magazine,” saucony - for making durable shoes, my community, friends, and relatives for helping me get my life back. Most importantly, thank you to my kids and my wife for always being there for me. now, i will always be here for you. god Bless. WWW.KCFITMAG.COM

LUKE COX AFTER A SUCCESSFUL FULL ROUND OF THE KANSAS CITY FITNESS PROGRAM...time to buy some new pants.

it was a few weeks before winter break at tarkio High school in Missouri. Luke Cox, a social studies teacher at the school, browsed through U.s. news with the students in his current events class. they came across a topic on Cnn iReport about weight loss stories. Luke had been going through his own weight loss journey, so after looking at a few of the stories online, his students suggested he wrote about his story and submit it. at first Luke didn’t want to, but after more encouragement from his students, he wrote the story and posted it on iReport. Within the next 24 hours the story had unexpectedly gone viral. not even a day after Luke posted the story it had more than 3,000 views and more than 2,000 shares, and his friends and family were sharing it on Facebook. “it’s

28

incredible,” Luke says. “i didn’t know how big the ripple effect would be,” he says, “but to anyone who wants to hear my story i’d be happy to tell it.” a year ago Luke weighed almost 415 pounds, not caring about his health, or his life in general. after realizing he needed to change, he started his long, difficult journey to a healthier life by joining the Kansas City Weight Loss Program in March. now he’s a completely different person whose story is spreading quickly. He never expected this to happen and he never expected to be someone else’s inspiration. “i’m not that special. i’m just a guy who wanted his life back, but people helped me along the way and now i want to help other people.” Luke

tells us more about his weight loss journey, what he’s learned along the way, and how his life has changed since starting his journey. WHAT’S THE HEAVIEST YOU’VE EVER WEIGHED? From what i can tell it was at least 415 pounds. i had to go to the doctor and was asked how much i weighed. i lied to the doctor because i didn’t know. so what i did was i told the doctor i had to use the restroom and i found a scale that was used for patients in wheelchairs because i knew that was the only scale that could actually weigh me. i stood on the scale and i was at 415 or 416 pounds. this was last December. now i’m at about 280 pounds, so that’s about 135 pounds lost since i was at my heaviest.

DO YOU THINK YOU’VE REACHED YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL IN HEALTH? My ultimate goal is to be around 260 or 270 pounds, but also be physically fit at that size. i just think that with my size and frame i’m not going to get much smaller than that because of my genetics. i figure if i am going to be that size then i am going to be physically fit at that size as well. i also want to live longer. HOW DO YOU KEEP FROM GOING BACK TO YOUR OLD HABITS? i allow myself a cheat meal once a week. it’s like a reward. if you don’t, most people fall off the wagon pretty hard. if you work hard all week and use your cheat meal as a payment, you’re going to enjoy it more. that’s the way i’ve used it without going overboard with it. it’s a mental thing too. For example, around the holidays there’s a lot of Christmas candy around and you just have to ask yourself “is this going to help me lose weight?” if the answer is no, then you don’t need to eat it. the other aspect of it is that i worked really flipping hard to get this way and i don’t want to go back. i know how hard it was to lose the weight and know how it easy it was to get so big. WHAT WORKED BEST FOR YOU WHILE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT? a clean eating style and exercise. a lot of people thought that because i lost so much weight that i had surgery done. i said, “oh no, this is hard earned right here. i did it the old school way.” the biggest thing is understanding what you’re putting in your body and using food as fuel for your body. eat to live. Don’t live to eat. i am a firm believer that if you do something for 21 straight days then it becomes a habit. a lot of people think bad things when they think of

habits. there are good habits too. if you exercise and eat clean for 21 days, you’re going to want to continue to do that.

WHAT’S THE BEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED? From what i’ve learned about this is that if you want something bad enough and make it a priority, then you can get it. For me that way getting my life back because i only have one life. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS IN THE SAME POSITION YOU WERE IN A YEAR AGO? the biggest thing i can say to people is that you’re not alone, but you need to take the first step. the first thing you need to do is to get moving. start walking. Change your eating habits. you can do it slowly if you need to. start changing two to three things a week. also, find an accountability group to keep you accountable. People don’t like letting their peers down. People let themselves down all the time, but people don’t like to let other people down.

XL

WHAT SACRIFICES DID YOU HAVE TO MAKE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM? i sacrificed a lot. it is a two and a half hour drive to Kansas City from where i live, but i made the program a priority. two and a half hours to and from Kansas City is five hours in the car, which costs a lot of gas money. i cut back on a lot of other expenses just to be able to drive down there. My family sacrificed vacation time for me to be able to do this. if it’s important to you, you will make those sacrifices because you know they will pay off in the long run.

WAS THE KANSAS CITY WEIGH LOSS PROGRAM YOUR FIRST ATTEMPT AT LOSING WEIGHT OR HAVE YOU TRIED LOSING WEIGHT IN THE PAST? no, i tried different stuff before. i tried portion control and stuff like that. i was a semi-finalist for “the Biggest Loser” in 2006, but once i didn’t get that i kept putting more weight on. i did what most people do when you try something for a week and if it doesn’t work you give up on it rather than continue with it. i always knew i wanted to lose the weight, i just didn’t know how to start. i think that’s what a lot of people’s problem is and i can definitely relate to that. WHAT WORKED FOR YOU THIS TIME THAT HELPED YOU LOSE WEIGHT? it was the accountability aspect of the program and the competitive nature. it was also the overwhelming support that everyone, not just the people in the program but also the trainers and staff, had for each other. everyone cares about each person’s success. all of those combinations spoke to me. Plus, i had one of my friends training me and i didn’t want to let my friend down. People donated money to help fund my part in the program. With people donating their hard earned money towards a problem i created and having those people believe in me, i didn’t want to let them down. i wanted to hold myself more accountable than ever. it wasn’t my money. it was a community’s money. the combination of all of was perfect for me. HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR LIFE AND BODY ARE NOW COMPARED TO HOW THEY WERE A YEAR AGO? it’s completely changed. i’m bigger, stronger and faster. When i say bigger, stronger and faster, i mean physically and strength wise. i feel 15 years younger and i even look 15 years younger. i have so much more energy. My job performance is better. My interaction with my family is better. now i’m not embarrassed to take pictures and when my wife wants to take pictures i’ll jump in there more often now. your whole life changes and people look at your in a more positive way. HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO SHARE WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED DURING YOUR JOURNEY WITH ANYONE ELSE? yeah. i’ve been asked to speak to some local businesses and groups about my weight loss journey on numerous occasions. i do that because i want to give back and pay it forward. i guess if i can be an inspiration for somebody, then that would be great. i never thought i would and i didn’t do it for that. i want people to succeed and i want people to get their life back. LUKE JOINS THE ARMY...THAT’S RIGHT SOLDIER, THE KANSAS CITY FITNESS ARMY. His toughness and determination led luke to fitness success as well as helped his team.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? i think the hardest part was not stopping and continuing to work towards my goal.

8-WEEK TRANSFORMATION

Charles “Chip” Cunningham recently went through an amazing 8-week transformation. He gives us the details about his journey and the hard work that came with it.

TELL US A LITTLE BACKGROUND ABOUT YOURSELF. My name is Charles “Chip” Cunningham and i have lived in the Overland Park area for the last 13 years. immediately after graduating high school in salina, Kan. i joined the Kansas army national guard (KsaRng) and moved to Kansas City to further my education. i am still a member of the KsaRng and work full time as a Readiness nCO for the 369th Brigade signal Company located at 100 s. 20th st., Kansas City, Kan. in December 2013 i received my Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Fitness and plan on continuing my educational goals by taking the Collegiate strength and Conditioning specialist (CsCs) certification in the spring of 2014. My wife, angela Cunningham, and i have been married for 6 years and she was a big support for me throughout the 8-week transformation.

46

Kansas City Fitness Magazine • JANUARY 2014

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO DO THE TRANSFORMATION? During my last deployment i started lifting and working out as part of my daily routine and really fell in love with strength training. ever since that deployment exercise and training have been part of my daily routine, however, as time went on and the busier i got, my nutritional habits began to suffer. even though i was training and exercising i wasn’t taking care of myself and slowly but surely over time my body fat levels continued to rise. One day i saw a picture of myself and was just overall not happy with what i saw. For the amount of time i was putting in at the gym plus the amount of money i was spending on supplements i knew that this was not what i should look like. Deep down i knew i possessed the work ethic and motivation to make a change, so i made the decision to totally dedicate myself to an 8-week transformation period in the hopes i could achieve my body’s true potential. WHAT WAS YOUR OVERALL GOAL? During my initial weigh in i weighed over 240 lbs and was about 15% body fat. My overall goal in the beginning was to lose about twenty pounds and drop my body fat to under 10% while also maintaining my muscle mass. One of the reasons i had failed at diets in the past was because after a week or two i worried that i was losing too much muscle, so i’d quit dieting. i’d also tell myself it’s ok to eat an unhealthy meal because i just went to the gym and my body will use all the nutrients for muscle. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way so another goal of mine was to eat completely clean for the entire 8-week duration. as the transformation progressed i made a new goal of getting down to 6% percent body fat and weighing in under 205 pounds exactly 8 weeks after my start date. Ultimately i just wanted to put in the time, effort, and dedication to show what is possible when you put your mind to something and help motivate others who may be in similar situations. Whether it is fitness, business, or a personal goal i truly believe you can achieve anything when you dedicate yourself to it 100% and i wanted to be able to prove that to myself and others. WHAT WERE THE MAIN PARTS OF YOUR TRANSFORMATION, SUCH AS DIET, WORKOUTS AND OVERALL LIFESTYLE CHANGES? i divided my training plan up into four phases with each phase lasting a period of two weeks. During the first phase i focused solely on reducing body fat. i knew that i had a solid frame, but my problem was that a majority of my muscle mass was being covered by fat. in order to begin to lean out i utilized high repetitions within the 15-20 range. During phase ii (weeks three and four) i trained for hypertrophy, 8-12 reps, to ensure i was able to maintain my muscle mass while adjusting to my reduction in body fat and overall weight that accompanied my diet. the third phase is where i really began to intensify my training. i knew that time was ticking down and i had to make the most of every possible workout. i used a

variety of training principles during this phase. in order to ensure i was utilizing both type i (slow twitch) and type ii (fast twitch) muscle fibers i would start off by doing reps of 5-8 on an exercise for a couple sets and then i would adjust the weight and complete 15-20 reps for some additional sets. During the last phase it was all about getting as lean as possible so every workout was done as a circuit. the circuits varied from conducting sets based off reps to executing the exercise for a certain duration of time. each circuit concluded with tabata training for two different exercises, which consists of 8 sets done for 20 seconds with 10 seconds rest between each set. throughout the entire 8-week process i also completed High intensity interval training (Hiit) circuits on Monday and Friday mornings. On the other mornings i completed steady state cardio for a duration somewhere between 20-45 minutes depending on how much time i had available. strength training workouts were done Monday through Friday in the afternoons and i utilized the weekend to allow my body to rest and grow, but ensured i stuck to my diet and always participated in a cardio session. My diet was high in protein and i steadily decreased carbohydrates along the way while ingesting extremely minimal amounts of fat. there were also some simple rules that i made that i followed 100% throughout the entire duration, which are as follows: • no eating out • no alcohol • no carbohydrates after 3 pm • no red meat • eat every 2-3 hours another change that i made during this process was weighing my food, not only to ensure i didn’t over indulge, but also to ensure i was getting the right amount of macronutrients to accompany my weight loss plan. Weighing my food allowed me to know the exact amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fats i was getting during each meal. this also allowed me to easily make adjustments throughout the process to keep my body guessing and ensure my metabolism was working at full capacity. Meal preparation was also key to sticking to my diet. through various resources that i found online, along with talking to a few fitness professionals, by the end of the third week i had an efficient system in place that allowed me to cook all my meals for the entire week on sunday. this ensured that i always had a healthy option available when i was hungry. Lifestyle wise i put my social life on hold. there were a lot of fun events and other things i was missing out on, but i figured it was only for 8 weeks and in the end the final reward would be more satisfying than a night out. HOW OFTEN DID YOU WORKOUT DURING THE 8 WEEKS? i worked out M-F for the entire 8 weeks. saturday and sundays were my active rest days where i would do some kind of active cardio, but nothing too intense. For example,

one saturday i went to skyzone, an indoor trampoline park, with my wife and sister. Finding fun ways of doing cardio helped keep things fresh and ensured i did not get burnt out. During the week (M-F) i conducted my cardio sessions in the morning and my strength training was done in the afternoons. WHERE DID YOU TRAIN AT AND WHO DID YOU TRAIN WITH? simoneau sports Performance Center: 8302 W 125th st, Overland Park, Ks 66213 ian Campbell is a trainer at simoneau sports Performance center and he assisted me by making creative cardio workouts that maximized fat loss while helping increase/preserve muscle mass. ian is a former football player for K-state and we worked very well together. each session with ian was completely different and i enjoyed the variety that he incorporates into his training methodology. HealthRidge Fitness: 17800 W 106th St, Olathe, KS Paul sharbaugh runs the boot camp program at this facility. i met Paul through some military contacts and immediately decided his program would be a great way to keep me active and lose some extra pounds. the boot camp program is a 1 hour class that focuses on high intensity training, but Paul ensures that no experience is the same and continuously adds different variables and exercise principles. the accountability and leadership that Paul provides helped motivate me to ensure i woke up early and made it to his program every morning that i had agreed to be there. i attended boot camp every Monday and Friday and have continued to actively use this program, even though my transformation is over. Gold’s Gym: 6501 E Frontage Rd, Merriam, KS ‎ Pejman “JP” Baha is someone i worked with that helped me with my nutritional planning and overall transformation. JP works with a lot of bodybuilders and fitness athletes and we met twice a week for a strength training session. Our sessions focused on total body training and leaning down through strength training utilizing a variety of different methods and exercises. He really helped me to stay on task and we would measure my body fat every 10 days and being able to monitor those real time results really helped motivate me towards reaching my goal since i had actual evidence that what we were doing was in fact working.

“DEEP DOWN I KNEW I POSSESSED THE WORK ETHIC AND MOTIVATION TO MAKE A CHANGE, SO I MADE THE DECISION TO TOTALLY DEDICATE MYSELF TO AN 8-WEEK TRANSFORMATION PERIOD IN THE HOPES I COULD ACHIEVE MY BODY’S TRUE POTENTIAL.”

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2014

Here’s a tip: I eat six meals a day...That’s right, SIX!

“WHAT IS THE BEST DIET?” REAL FITNESS TALK WITH AN EVERYDAY GAL

Words: Danielle DuPree

S

ince my success in the Kansas City Weight Loss Challenge, I am often asked, “What kind of diet are you on?” i really cannot answer this question with a quick response because i am not on a diet. i DiD diet two times during the competition. However, i am not a diet person. i simply have made the decision to be a healthy eater. and believe me, it was and still is the hardest part of my weight loss... But it’s the most important. When i say i dieted twice, what i am saying is that during the first 28 days of my weight loss, i went on a strict gluten free, sugar free (except fruit) and dairy free diet. Doing this was rough for about 10 days and then i just simply felt aMazing! i wish i could simply pass the awesomeness that i felt on to you. everybody should do it to get toxins out of their bodies. also, my sense of taste was much more sensitive because of this detox... i could not believe

48

how much better healthy food tasted! Have you ever woke up and felt like you were waking up on a mountain side with your arms wide open, taking in the sky? no? Kind of corny huh? Well, that is how i felt and still feel now. i am not a morning person either.

the other time i dieted during the competition was right after i was injured and had to wear that damn boot. since my Hiit cardio was restricted, my trainer, elRoy Carr, and i decided i needed to hit the diet hard to make up for it. i did a very strict, glycogen Depletion Diet. it did not allow for fruits or carbs, and to be honest, i was miserable. all i could think of was cheating on my diet. i am an “a” Blood type and “a’s” do not do well without HeaLtHy carbs. On the reverse, “O” blood types would thrive on a low carb diet. everyday, i pretty much ate the same things. i did have a cheat meal once a week. now that the competition is over, i am

Kansas City Fitness Magazine • JANUARY 2014

still eating healthy but i have a whole cheat day. if you are worried about taking a “cheat meal,” there is a lot of research on why this actually helps your body lose weight.

Back to my eating... i eat six meals a day. that’s right, siX! two of those meals are protein shakes. i try and stick to 20-25 grams of protein and 15 grams of carbs for each of my meals. i eat unlimited veggies and i limit my dairy intake. i am still pretty much gluten free because my body does sooooo much better without it. However, most “a” blood types do well with HeaLtHy gluten. now, if i am hungry between any of my meals, i will eat a piece of fruit; even if it’s before bedtime because fruit is much better than the junk i use to eat before bed. With my protein shakes, i really mixed it up and tried a lot of different protein shake recipes. i look forward to my mid-morning protein shake because it is such a tasty treat.

i track everything i eat on my phone. i have a BodyBugg by Body Media so i use that app, but there are a lot of other apps that will let you log your food, Calorie-Count, MyFitnessPal, etc. it is a pain, but i HaVe to log my food, or i will get off course. the biggest mistake i have made was under-eating. i was eating about 1100-1200 calories a day (that was all i was hungry for) and i did not lose any weight. Once i upped it to 1500 calories, i started to lose weight. However, i have lost the most weight eating 1800 calories a day. seems wrong that i would be losing more weight by eating more, but since i am very active now, my body really needs those calories. there are many calorie calculators online that will help you see where you should be calorie-wise. On the “Biggest Loser,” they have their contestants eat seven times their body weight in calories.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP

Let’s face it...no matter which two teams are in the big game in February, most of us use Super Bowl Sunday as an excuse to eat a ridiculous amount of dips and drink a few cold ones... Chef Courtney is here to at least make a couple of the dips being scooped into your salivating mouth a healthier option. Check out the recipes below and we bet these dishes are so good... you’ll have to make a couple batches of each. 1 6 oz chicken breast (grilled or baked) ¾ cup low-fat cottage cheese ½ cup non-fat sour cream 3-4 tablespoons Franks Wing sauce *depends on how spicy you want it 2 tablespoons of fat free ranch Blend everything in a food processor except chicken until the cottage cheese is pureed and creamy. Add diced chicken and pulse until the chicken is distributed evenly Pretzels , mini rice cakes and whole wheat crackers make for great dippers!

ROASTED TOMATO HUMMUS

4 garlic cloves 1 teaspoon salt Two 1-pound 3-ounce cans chick-peas, drained and rinsed 2/3 cup well stirred tahini 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, or to taste 1/2 cup olive oil, or to taste 1/2-1 cup roasted tomato Add all of the ingredients to a food a processor and blend until smooth.

COURTNEY BUSBY’S HOW TO BE A “SUCCESSFUL LOSER”

protein packed small meals frequently. Protein has a higher thermogentic effect. you burn about 30% of 1 eat the calories the food contains during digestion. ex: 300 calorie piece of chicken takes about 90 calories to break it down.

ex: Whole grains, beans, fruits and veggies. Bad carbs are digested quickly causing our blood sugar and insulin levels to spike often, giving you the “crash” after a big meal. ex: refined sugars, white potatoes, white flour and white rice to just to name a few.

How did you end up in the fitness industry?

i`ve been in love with fitness since i left the Marine Corp. (1989) i saw an ad for PCi- Pinnacle Career institute and couldn`t resist. My hobby is now my career. you can`t ask for more than that.

How did you end up in the fitness industry? i was a 3-sport

varsity athlete in high school at sumner academy of arts and sciences in KCK. i also continued staying fit by wrestling and playing football at neosho County Community College and Kansas state University. after a 6-year stint in property management, i began a Mixed Martial arts Career, which required a great work ethic, fitness, and quality dieting. in February 2013 i made the decision to become a full time fighter, as well as working for Ringside Fitness at gold’s gym as their head trainer of the hour long “Hit-Ride” at Ringside boxing or Kick- Boxing Class. Being a Mixed Martial artist and working at Ringside go hand in hand and has been a true blessing!

Favorite part about working in the fitness industry: My

favorite part of the fitness industry is watching the progress of all my members and clients and watching them achieve their goals and watching them get better everyday, week, month and moment they decide to workout with me. i also simply just love motivating people and being positive and keeping people on the grind and letting them know that with hard work and dedication, goals will be reached and conquered and that anything is possible! Of course there are different levels for everyone, but nonetheless if people stay the course, positive results will come! One final thing i absolutely love is grinding my class out to the brink of almost wanting to quit and you can see they are at their limits but they push through because they have that much respect for me and my class and the results they get from it! Like i always tell them during the class when i add extra exercises or reps,”hate me now to love me later!”

Favorite Workout: My favorite workout is obviously specified in my 1-hour class of KB and boxing. all in all people burn anywhere from 600- 1000 calories in my class. i will say on averaged the calorie number is at 845 because of the constant movement and hills and valleys of my intense hour!

How did you end up in the fitness industry? i’ve been involved in sports my whole life and of course, with sports comes working out and weight training. i always saw training as a way for me to constantly push myself and to get better everyday. through always pushing myself, thinking of ways to enhance my workouts and push my body to its limits is how i came up with the idea of the Rock 360. it was inevitable that i would be in the fitness industry, but just very blessed in inventing the ROCK 360, which gave me an amazing opportunity to truly do what i love for the rest of my life.

Favorite part about working in the fitness industry: Probably that it’s an

extension of who i am. i love getting up in the morning with the feeling “i get tO,” not “i gOt tO.” i truly love what i am doing in helping people reach their goals. it makes the hard work and everything i’ve been through worth it. there is no better feeling than that one of accomplishment. Favorite Workout: i push myself really hard in with different training techniques depending on what goals i have set for myself. With everything i do, i like to test my limits, but i usually have people in the gym with me like my fiancé or my little brothers and i really enjoy showing them everything i know and adapting what i do to accommodate their level of fitness. Which is pretty much the foundation for the ROCK, turning something very effective and challenging and making it useful for everyone. My favorite workout is a mix of ROCK 360, power lifting and Crossfit workouts. Blending all of those together gives me the best results.

Favorite part about working in the fitness industry: My most favorite part of working with
