Rick and Scott are dedicated to servicing your home and business landscaping, lawn care, sprinkler system, irrigation, mowing and outdoor lighting needs. They have over 20
years of experience in all phases of landscape design, sprinkler installation, fertilizer programs and property management. R & S services the entire Kansas City Metro area from our 4,800 sq. ft. shop located in Smithville, Missouri. t’s true what they say, if you love what you do, it’s really not work. Mike Schwartz and David Schmidt used to be neighbors working separate jobs in the corporate world, not exactly liking what they did every day. Now, they’re business partners doing work they love and are passionate about. Ten years ago, Schwartz, a former IT and Project Management professional, and Schmidt, also a former Project Manager, combined their skills and started Built By Design, an award-winning remodeling and construction company. H
omebuilder, Chris Ragland, has earned a reputation for being forward-thinking in her home designs, pushing the envelope a little and meeting challenges head on. For these reasons, it should come as no surprise that Ragland oversaw the construction of the 700-square-foot cabin (including covered porch) that visitors won’t be able to miss inside Bartle Hall this weekend. The cabin is the focal point of the 2014 Kansas City Home Show being held in conjunction with the Flower, Lawn and Garden Show. Both shows are presented by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City. Ragland, who refers to the one-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin as the “Love Shack,” hopes people will be inspired by its colors and finishes when they are looking to build or remodel their own home. “I think it’s going to be a great addition to the floor (of the Home Show),” said Ragland, who is co-owner of Homes by Chris, LLC and the 2014 president of the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City. The frame of the “Love Shack” — which also could be described as a dreamy getaway, country retreat or sophisticated cabin — was built at McCray Lumber and Millwork. All the materials for this project were donated, and McCray Lumber supplied the wood for the subfloor, rafters and interior walls. The frame was then taken apart and re-assembled inside Bartle Hall. Construction of Ragland’s project began at 10 a.m. Monday inside Bartle, which means that the team of tradespeople had four days to build and decorate the cabin before Home Show visitors began arriving Friday morning. (They will have about eight hours to disassemble it once the Home Show is complete.) Inside the cabin, people will notice that
barn wood has been used in several places as accents, including the kitchen, fireplace, and walls in the bedroom and bath. The use of barn wood was popular a few decades ago, Ragland said, but has come back with a revamped look. “Barn wood has made a huge comeback with people being more green and recycling,” she said. The barn wood accents are just one of the interesting details and new design trends that can be found in and around the “Love Shack.” For example, the bathroom features a freestanding tub, old schoolhouse vanity, and pebble floor. In the kitchen, visitors will see painted cabinetry, solid-surface countertops, a farmhouse sink, and an under-counter beverage refrigerator. In addition, people are sure to notice the cabin’s handsome hardwood floor. Weber Flooring donated this very light hardwood along with the rest of the tile and flooring for this project. On the exterior, the cabin features James Hardie pre-painted trim and shingle siding, which never has to to be painted again. Ragland said this product has been popular in other parts of the country (especially the South) but is just starting to gain popularity here. It’s a durable product that can handle high humidity yearround. On one side of the cabin’s exterior, people will be able to see the “bones” of the cabin where its under-siding is exposed. Ragland has been in the home-building industry for more than 10 years. She founded Homes by Chris, LLC (based in Liberty, Mo.) with her husband, Roy, in 2003 after a two-decade-plus career as a corporate project manager. During her previous career, Ragland also had her real estate license and helped her husband build some single-family rental homes in

her “spare time.” When she decided to make a career change in 2003, Ragland flipped one house before knowing she would rather build homes from scratch. Ragland is a Certified Green Professional, and Homes by Chris has now built more than 200 houses (almost exclusively in Clay and Platte counties in Missouri). Homes by Chris has earned accolades as an award-winning home builder, having participated in the HBA’s Parade of Homes and winning 30 out of 33 contest entries. The homes that Ragland and her company build are known for their clean lines, cutting-edge looks and forward-thinking designs. And the Raglands supervise the construction process very carefully to make sure everything is done correctly. “I enjoy working with homeowners,” she said. “It’s a very emotional time in a homeowner’s life when they decide they are going to custom build a home.” As part of her responsibilities as HBA president, Ragland represents more than 500 member companies. She said some of the HBA’s initiatives this year include recognizing up-and-coming builders (the Home Builders Association gave its firstever Next Generation Builder Award in December); getting the word out about the shortage of labor in the construction industry; increasing the number of education programs for home builders and associates; and keeping an eye on pending legislation on the local, state and national levels that would add unnecessary costs to the price of new homes. As a builder, Ragland feels a great sense of accomplishment in her work, all the while being outside and interacting with people every day. “I don’t know if it could be any better,” she said. Precision Woods Inc . | The kitchen cabinets, designed and created by Precision Woods Inc., are shaker-style, both in the cabinet structure and the doors. The cabinets are painted to enhance their natural beauty. Elmwood Reclaimed Timber | Elmwood Reclaimed Timber is a streamlined, environmentally conscious company that takes timber and re-purposes it to create stunning wood features for homes and businesses. The company donated 400 square feet of Rocky Mountain Mosaic reclaimed paneling for this custom cabin.
