NEW CONSERVATORIUM KRAKOW, POLAND MASTER GRADUATION PROJECT 10.2011 CRACOW UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

Blonia - an unique city space in Europe, is a huge (48 ha) grass meadow in western area of Cracow, remaining untouched during the rich and turbulent history of the city. The entry in the register of monuments of Cracow in 2000 gave a clear expression of its enormous value for the city. Today this grassfield is a recreation area, frequently hosting large events. Nevertheless, it may be treated as a great city square, and the newly designed building located by the busy western street, would be a formal closure of the frontage on the west side, becoming a new cultural destination point confronting the Old City.


FORM SHAPING 1. Low volume with longitudinal elevation as Błonia frontage. Division into 2 function zones to be reflected in a dynamic form. 2. Building as a spatial buckle fastening Błonia - the idea of symbolic link between forms and terrain. 3. Assigning active function for the roof, allowing exploration of the building directly from the site, formal emphasising the characteristic elements that define the function of the building. The issues scenic and interior-exterior relationships play an important role in the building, the building is supposed to be extrovertic. Due to long ramp coming through the building and huge glass walls his daily functioning can be easily observed even without being inside. Interesting is also the mixing of sports and cultural character of the place - the runners and cyclists after strenuous exercise in Błonia can relax in a cafe on a sunny terrace of the conservatory or enjoy the music on a student recital.

The basic functional building division is clear from the form-these are the two areas: educational and concert. Flexibility of the foyer space enables separating the fragments according to need, it can become an open forum for music - a place where you can organize a mini-recitals, meetings and workshops for all music lovers. Passing through the building to the west side is possible due to the ramp along the roof breake. This unusual bridge delving into the building, gives an effect of integration of the exterior of the interior zone. On one hand, while stepping the roof terrace you can admire the panoramic view at ease, while inside the building are framed such a long overhang the wall elevation. The ramp is kind of an intermediate between these two kinds of aesthetic and visual sensations.


NEW CENTRE WILLINKPLEIN EMMEN, THE NETHERLANDS COMPETITION PROJECT 09.2011 DE ARCHTEKTEN CIE.

Proposal for a Rabobank office building as a new architectural value in the centre of Emmen, Netherlands. Terracing and sculpturality are the factors to improve the quality of public space and integration with the Willinkplein, a green plaza in front of the building.

Busy main road is covered with a large park site. The green space is continued on the building roof, becoming recreation area both for public and for employees. The building not only becomes an important point in the new city center, but its form imposes order and urban aesthetic in the surrounding. PROGRAMMING

INTEGRATING


The groundfloor of the building serves as commercial space (supermarket) and official entrance area of the Rabobank. The important question was keeping the required floor area and at the same time avoiding the effect of radical form of office tower standing on a huge flat ground base. Compromise was achieved with stepping form of the building, the gradually reduced floor area of each floor, Tapering the volumes enabled to create original office tower. The soft edges of floor levels were emphasised by the strong curved white stripes on the facades and contrasted with narrow horizontal glazing. The active green roof also offers a basketball field, with decorative mesh fence, fitted into graphic pattern of the design.



KAOSHIUNG PORT STATION KAOSHIUNG, TAIWAN 1ST PRIZE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION 2011 WORK AT DE ARCHITEKTEN CIE., AMSTERDAM

The aim of the competition was to transform the derelict site of the old railway and port station from an urban barrier between two important areas of the city into a connective piece of the urban fabric. In the proposal new mixed-use urban blocks, commercial areas, renovation/restoration of industrial buildings for artist studios and galleries, railyards, rail lines, and station buildings were interwoven with a new linear park whose central programme is an indoor/outdoor historical museum about the industrial history of the are and city.




COOLHAVEN ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS 2ND PRIZE IN COMPETITION 2011 WORK AT JO COENEN & CO ARCHITEKTEN, AMSTERDAM

Coolhaven is a name of the harbour basin of the river Maas in south-west par of Rotterdam. It is a place with important hubs of the city and an underground subway station going east-west. The buildings around the pool is a blend of typical Dutch buildings in the historic part at northern, with an attractive park among them, urban high blocks on the south and office complexes from the 80s. In the triangular plot by the busy route in north-eastern part there is Hogeschool van Rotterdam with student campus. The main problem is the overscaled city tissue and lack of healthy public space. The aim was to develope of this area into harbour with green boulevards, plazas, pavilions and piers, an attractive place for living.

The design area was parted into 4 funtion zones: Campus Living , University Campus, Waterfront Living and Science Boulevard. The existing campus was expanded with the new wing, creating interior court covered with glass roof. New complex in the eastern part consists of terraced housing with large parking level on the ground. The diverse design creates green roofspaces and plazas in between the volumes. The dominant 3 housing towers (the tallest 105 m) are part of the urban character of Rotterdam, they become recognizable marks in the city skyline. The idea of reducing car traffic along harbour and limiting it to one of the tram line would be helpful to open plints and integrating public space with the buildings.

FUTURE OFFICE HAARLEM, THE NETHERLANDS PROJECT AND REALISATION VII.2009 - I.2010 WORK AT MARC KOEHLER ARCHITECTS, AMSTERDAM

Project for Combined Traders Company in Haarlem, worked out in team of Marc Koehler Architects in Amsterdam. Experimental formal solutions, eco materials and new functional office model.


The project tries to confront with the traditional concept of the office, as a place with generic spaces and tailor-made workplaces. By replacing the standard separated office desks with sinusoidal table it is possible to create a range of various uses. The individual workplaces can move along the curve, stimulating more interactions between people.


The flexibility is essential factor, but also creating pleasant environment in the office, defined as the domestic landscape. Special holes in few diffrent sizes distributed in the table can be adapted for rotating office cabinets, pot plants, storage for office supplies. Natural material like pressed recycled cartonboards was used to create the soft edge desk and conference table and kitchen ‘wall’ in the resting area of the office.


WEENAPOINT ROTTERDAM ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS 1ST PRIZE IN COMPETITION WORK AT DE ARCHITEKTEN CIE. AMSTERDAM

Directly across from Rotterdam Central Station, on the most prominent location of Rotterdam Central District, The Weenapoint Tower marks the entrance to the inner city. It is bound to determine the first impression the city makes on the 320,000 people travelling to the new Rotterdam Central Station from the year 2012 on. New construction of Weenapoint amounts to a timeless structure of modern architecture with a classic feel in an international style. A street-level link with the city is established through the public plinth of the building.

SOUND GARDEN WARSAW, POLAND 1ST PRIZE IN NATIONAL COMPETITION 2011 IN TEAM

The background of the project was in one of Warsaw’s typical residential areas- with surrounding concrete blocks of flats and the undefined green space between them. Concept of a playground - a sound garden with organic surface was inspired by curves of musical instruments. Sound toys on the playgrounds were designed as overscaled and transformed parts of intruments. The playground supposed to be unique in form among others, but also universal in sense of being designed for all.


Softness of the lines we associate with the world of music: the sounds of instruments or even the shape of the human ear. The round plane is smoothly rising and falling, vibrating in space. The hills become playground for children, observational points. The diverse tectonic movement gives great opportunities, and various forms of play. Hills fall gently toward the inner space. The youngest climb up and the older walk in the valleys in this sculptural terrain, wchich makes the impression of fading age groups and the concept of growth. Language forms and tectonics of place and manner of toys is simple and universal. Music, sounds can combine both children and adults, regulars and tourists.Music is an universal value. Items of equipment, a small architecture are strongly connected to the plane. Toys are formally diverse, ranging from strongly vertical pipes, through the free, inspired by nature, gathered in clumps to the cane entered the area and shaped wooden wheels on the side benches, reminiscent of the circles radiating sound waves. Music Circle knowingly uses sounds, harmonies, rhythms.Vertical form of toys like trunks of trees or the surrounding reminiscent of the great blades of grass. Toys, apparently freely scattered, in fact, complementary binding site complex.


MARITIME MUSEUM SZCZECIN, POLAND COMPETITION PROJECT 2011 IN TEAM

The theme of the competition was to design a building for the Maritime Museum in a big port city Szczecin. The building would be located in industrial area on the peninsula, connected with city centre by the main urban route - the bridge over River Oder. The main challenge was to allow the acces to the building directly from the route, and provide an attractive solution to the roof as seen from the bridge.

The aim of the Maritime Museum is to create a place for families to spend time with emphasis on children and youth, and its aim is to combine technical education, and historical and natural science. Future Maritime Museum would become not only lifegiving nucleus of a reference point and the eastern bank of the Oder River development - now abandoned - but also a recognizable, distinct architectural icon of the shore, visible from the panoramic terrace on the opposite bank, and reminiscent of the spatial dialogue, more than mirror of the river.


The competition terms assumed covering 50% of the building plot at ground level and the creation of the Museum entrance square. The rough industrial nature of the coast with the remaining unused harbor cranes was very inspiring in designing new musuem. The steel construction was flexible enough to gain high and spacious exhibition spaces, and the steel truss carrying floor slabs gave the elevation rhytm and strong expression. The open space at ground level separated by a line of truss frame becomes a transition plaza between the entrance to the building and the river boulevard. Due to continuous glazing the building is visually open and in the evening gives attractive illumination mirrored in the water.


The program defines a museum as the need to contain three exhibition parts: · The exhibition presents the history of the collections of nautical navigation · Exhibition of Educational physical profile (Museum of Waves) · Maritime Heritage Park - an exhibition of archaeological and ethnographic Integrating element of the exhibition of the history of navigation and the “museum of waves” is stream of water, which can serve as a threefold function. The “museum waves” exhibit wave phenomena in nature. In the present model of historical exposition of phenomena important for navigation (eg, buoyancy, wind, tides, waves). Besides the exhibition halls the Museum also houses a 50-seats cinema with a spherical screen, for thematic movies in 4D technology.



SKI JUMP CENTRE ZAKOPANE, POLAND STUDY PROJECT 2010

The designed building has a program closely associated with support for the ski jump complex in Zakopane, in polish mountains Tatry. The building, partially recessed in the ground, integrates with the terrain but primarily through the special shape of the roof. The idea involves the formation of such a roof, in the middle of the building was lowered to ground level. In this way, it is possible to make all walking as an area of ​​the roof.


The building provides support for the massive outdoor sport events. It is the object of “transition� to the grandstand for spectators of the ski competitions. One entrance to the crown stands is available from the roof. Other entrances are distributed carefully in the building, allowing accommodate a significant amount of people coming to the games - and this number can reach up to 40 000. The building is open all year, but during the race is not available for spectators in the stands, the people at that time staying in it are not able to be prosperous in the stands and watching the event without buying a ticket. In this way the movement of people is controlled, which is essential for the maintenance of order and rational use of the building.


The individual functions in the building are treated as boxes scattered loosely in space on 3 levels of the building. The interior is so continuous, open space, and steel columns structure gives it lightness. These procedures allow for the greatest possible openness of building to the mountain landscape, and large glass surfaces allow for its contemplation.

CITY PATCH CRACOW, POLAND STUDY PROJECT 2010

The 32-ha post-industrial area in the north part of Cracow’s Old City, just behind the main railway station, remains undelevoped for years. The railway and busy city route as the urban borders isolate this potentially attractive area. Positive aspects include good communication network, which is the frame for the new urban system, the presence of such objects as the Army Museum, two high schools - as generators of social activity.


The wish was to revitalize those neglected areas to gain an attractive part of the city, which thanks to its location would perfectly connect to the other regions, and thus would have a chance to develop. The proposed new buildings have a typical urban composition, with different functional program, focusing primarily on service and cultural functions. The space, which is distinguished by the quantity, variety and proportion of functions of a public nature in which the main focus areas of public life. The proposal is a triangular square, with Mediacentre with pool water, amphitheater and summer scene. The public space provides a possibility to organize outdoor events such as book markert, concerts and festivals. Square would be available directly through the dynamic shaped footbridge going from University of Technology, raised above the railway, and second footbridge from the Central Station green roof. On the north there was triangular arrangement of residential open quarters. Also on the east the layout of existing post-army monuments imposed orthogonal urban grid for designing regular housing blocks with commercial plinth.

Elements of the urban composition in the heart of developing area. Careful zoning the space allow to create a range of urban interiors of diffrent character and program.


JAVAPLEIN FORUM AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS STUDY PROJECT 2008, Hogeschool van Amsterdam

Javaplein is the heart of Indonesian district in eastern Amsterdam. The three streets frame a triangle plot among other regular urban blocks, with dominating housing function, with some shopping points at Molukkenstraat. The interesting old bath house in the opposite square now houses a restaurant. The place of a great potential for being developed as vivid centre mixing housing with cultural and commercial facilities.


The design building is higher than neighbourhood , but won’t affect negatively the sunlight conditions around, especially on Madurastraat, where a large open space is proposed. The third block with apartments connects two ground volumes like a bridge on the top. The open court between two new blocks will be collective space. The entrances to apartments on the north are raised up from the street level – the garage is half level underground. The diagonal block is entirely devoted for a public library. Idea of creating the building from blocks of various types of apartments.


SHAKESPEARE THEATRE SZCZECIN, POLAND NATIONAL COMPETITION PROJECT 2011 WORK AT KOZIEN ARCHITEKCI KRAKOW

The Polish Theatre in Szczecin is placed in 19th century classical building, with attarctive location by the riverbank, however the building does not fully meet the needs of the institution. The open national competition was to extend it with new Elizabethan theatre, an amphitheatre and open-air scene. The green open area around the existing building gave a range of possibilities for a new design, but also the quarter blocks in the neighbourhood dictated the urban rules. The competiton proposal assume treating the Theater as the part of city structure, and the new parts added to the volume would become the formal closure of the urban block.




BREATHING MUSEUM TAIPEI, TAIWAN COMPETITION PROJECT 09.2011 DE ARCHTEKTEN CIE.

Open international competition organized by the mayor of Taipei, for a new multicultural building for the city, including art musuems, art school, workshops and congress centre. The building located on a park site by the river would become a huge container for Taiwan historic art collections and iconic mark in this part of the city. The form of the building was derived from the scholar stones, naturally shaped meditation rocks, being important part of Confucian art.




EXPLORING ORESTAD COPENHAGEN, DENMARK INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOPS 2010 TEAM WORK

The analyse and concept of improvement for Orestadt district, the team project made at the International Workshops „Exploring the Public City”in Copenhagen.


Orestad, a new district on the south of the city is being developed using the new town concept with the Copenhagen Metro as the primary public transport grid, connecting the area with the rest of the city. Despite the first-class architecture and carefully designed recreational areas, this unnaturally stretched district based on a linear communication suffer from a lack of social activity. The problem, common in areas developed “from the scratchâ€? as the model cities with all facilities, raises the question of overdesigning and overscaling the space for work and living. The concept is to create small objects in a human scale, the so-called satellites of the most important buildings associating a function. The satellite network imposed on the plan for Ă˜restad would fill the empty open spaces between buildings and initiate social interactions between them.
