So you bought a new house. What is the first thing you would do to make it feel like home? The easiest thing you could do is paint your front door! And remember the color on the outside of your door can be painted on the inside as well! Entering the home should feel just as cool when you exit the home as well! But more importantly, you must first ask yourself, how do you want your home to feel! People are always so excited to jump right in and start doing things when really you have to stop and come up with a master plan. Boring sounding right? No way! This helps you make sure you do not do one step forward and two steps back. Lighting is one of my favorite elements of any design job and one of the ways you can quickly adapt a space to feel like you! It’s like the earrings and high heeled shoe of a space….bad analogy for guys, but you get it!

How about an older home? What are some ways to give a more updated feel without a total remodel?

I think everyone may know this, but honestly, paint is your best friend. That and lighting! I find a lot of older homes, people never bite the bullet and add the necessary can lighting that makes the space feel better. They end up with 35 different lamps and the space always feels off! So no matter what color you do, it always feels dark and not like home! So find an electrician and do it once and do it right!

With open floorplans becoming increasingly popular I’m seeing large walls with lots of space. How would you tackle that? It’s about understanding scale. Often homeowners freak out when they see the cost of original art. However, if you look up DIY ART on Pinterest, you’ll have tons of ideas on how to pull off a large art moment without the crazy cost. And remember wall space should be a mix of gallery groupings and large scale art…..think your eye goes from busy to resting. And not every wall needs something on it. Often when we know something is off, homeowners chicken out and buy smaller items and then keep filling the walls with them, always knowing that it feels off! So I pass on to you the power to take a risk and GO BIG!!!!

What are some unique ways to spruce up the exterior of your new home? This is actually what I am in the process of at our own home. So it’s all about the vibe you want to create. At our home, I am going for a soft, modern look. So large scale planters, black exterior paint, and cool house numbers. Of course you can paint your front door which is an easy one. Or I am planning on adding string globe lights under our porch awning to make every evening a party! Why does it just have to be for special occasions!

What trends are hot right now that would be easy to incorporate into a new home? Of course gray is the new beige right now! But often people don’t realize that gray can look cool with khaki/brown. So don’t think you have to repaint everything. And of course white is the newest non-color color! I am seeing everyone craving fresh, calming design. It has a bit of a happenstance feel and perhaps everyone is secretly obsessed with Chip + Joanna Gaines! The other aspect is the industrial design twist. So have fun with piping and create tables, shelves, desks, you name it! To give it a cooler twist do copper pipping or iron with brass joints!
