A NEW SHINING STAR EMERGES
Most of you would recognize and know Lee Michelle from the audition program K-pop Star back in December 2011. She certainly is the kind of person who sticks to one’s memory a long time. Michelle took the stage away with her singing (Although some of the judges had to put in a few harsh words to criticize) when she sang Aretha Franklin’s ‘Chain of Fools’ for her first audition. She certainly had a different level of volume to her voice that made her stand out from a crowd, which is practically her trademark: Her ability as a singer. Michelle was born on 9th of September 1991 in Paju, South Korea to a Korean mother and an African American father and her parents divorced just before Michelle was born. Michelle has one brother and three sisters (two of them now live in America) and she’s the youngest member of the family. Michelle must have had a lot of hardships while growing up in Korea. Growing up is hard for anybody, but being an interracial child in Korea must have been more than challenging. On top of that she had to experience poverty and would frequently go to school on an empty stomach. 1st EDITION 5
But amidst of all her troubles, Michelle knew she loved to sing from an early age. She recalls her childhood saying she can never forget listening and singing to Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton’s cassette tapes her mother owned and trying to match the singing pitch with her sister. K-pop Star gave her a chance to have a shot in a singing career she expressed that she found the kpop Star experience exciting and really enjoyed herself and was able to sing as much as she wanted to.
And don’t get me wrong. ‘Without You’ is not about misery and loneliness but Michelle releases her emotions she’s had for so long, overpowering her weaknesses and standing up to everything that was hurting her in life. Michelle has said in one of her interviews how she doesn’t like to express and show her emotions because she knows she’ll be in pieces if she does. She says shed a lot of tears after she watched her music video. I hope they were happy tears because she made her fans thankful and happy hearing her song.

orean women are known for their fresh, glowing, youthful skin. Looking at actresses in many K-Dramas like “You Who Came from the Stars,” women often look like they barely wear makeup due to their luminous skin. According to Linda Moerch, author of “The Price of Beauty in South Korea,” the better one’s complexion is, the more highly thought of that person is in society since clean, clear skin is a symbol of purity. Seoul and other big cities in Asia like Shanghai and Beijing have issues with pollution, too. A strict moisturizing routine helps protect skin from the harsh elements, prolonging one’s youthfulness. Watching actresses on screen is enough to give anyone skin envy, but how do they achieve such flawless skin?
The “Inside” Scoop Koreans work hard to maintain 물광피부 (mul kwangpi bu) or “radiant, dewy skin.” The saying “beauty is skin deep” is true as the moisturizing process begins. Since skin reflects one’s health, drinking plenty of water helps with skin elasticity and dryness, providing a youthful appearance. A good diet prevents skin from aging quickly, creating a gorgeous glow. Many feel these steps even slow the aging process. Taking the time to consider a healthy diet and the multi-step process of moisturizing is beneficial. That’s why so many Korean women look so young regardless of age.
Cleanliness Before Moisture Cleansing and exfoliating is a valuable part of a healthy skin regime. Not cleansing enough clogs pores, impeding the moisturizer’s ability to soak into skin. Exfoliation unclogs pores, but doing this too much may damage skin, causing red scaly patches. Exfoliating every two days may be ideal. When cleansing, celebrities like singer/actress Suzy Bae swears by 4-2-4. Four-two-four involves using cleansing oil for four minutes. The oil breaks down makeup while replenishing skin. Next comes a foam cleanser for two minutes to clear pores. Finally, rinsing with cool water for four minutes removes impurities while closing pores. Cool water also increases blood circulation, creating rosy cheeks and reduces puffiness. Besides cool water, some celebrities even rinse with cold lemon water to tone and tighten skin while the lemon dissolves toxins. While following this method seems cumbersome, on “Get It Beauty,” Bae and her makeup artist, Hong Sung Hee, swears it helps makeup glide on better for a more natural appearance.

Moisturizing: A Multi-Step Process Across Asia, moisturizing is a timely but serious process. Celebrities may use between ten-to-20 moisturizers on their face to lock in moisture! Why so many? Paired with a balanced diet, the two work together to create a flawless, bright complexion. Layering moisturizers is the best way to achieve flawless skin. Since celebrities use so many, there is an application method. When applying moisturizer, start with the lightest ones like water-based serums and moisture sprays first. Medium-weight creams like day or night creams and eye serums would be next, followed by the heavier creams like wrinkle reducers last since they are the heaviest. Layering lightest to heaviest helps skin absorb moisturizer better. Celebrities also have their own methods for application. Actress Go HyungJung, author of the book “Texture,” suggests warming moisturizer to help it soak into skin. Other actresses and skin specialists suggest applying moisturizer in an upward fashion to lift and tighten skin.
Anyone Can Do It While moisturizing methods seem difficult, there is a reason why Korea is revered as one of the world’s skin care leaders. Anyone can follow this method regardless of how many products they have in their makeup cabinets. Just remember good cleansing skills, exfoliation, and layering moisturizers, and anyone can have the healthy skin of the stars!
Child actress and “Music Core” host Kim Sohyun uses Teenage Nature (tn) moisture cocktail cream. She demonstrated how she uses it in a 2013 episode of “Get It Beauty.” The moisture cocktail cream is available through ibuybeauti.com for under $25.

STELLAR’S “MARIONETTE”
JOELLE HALON
In February, female quartet Stellar released “Marionette,” a song about being treated like a puppet in a relationship. Emotionally charged lyrics and a dance track make the song memorable. “Marionette” is Stellar’s first hit, ranking 35 on the Gaon charts and 34 on Korea’s Billboard Hot 100 K-Pop chart. Unfortunately, the music video received negative attention for its sexy concept and 19+ rating, causing Gayoung, Minhee, JunYool and Hyoeun to receive the ire of fans. “Marionette’s” controversy stems mainly from the dance and milk scene, though these scenes aren’t really as bad as fans make them.
since the girls are marionettes. Stringed-puppets do not move fluidly; the dance was far from elegant. During the dance, the girls’ tights have stitching resembling doll seams. Equally important are the dark colored clothes. Darkness symbolizes loss of free-will. The man in the relationship yanks their strings, engaging them in the movements. They don’t want to, but they’re forced.
Like the lyrics to the song (‘Without you), she is beautiful and meaningful
and she certainly knows it”
A major gripe, though, is how unfocused the camera was during the dance sequence. There were times when it was difficult to tell what steps the girls were doing, but perhaps it’s for the best given the controversy.
The dance involved a lot of hip movement and rearrubbing, representing sexiness and erasing the memories of being used. The dance, as awkward as it was, fit the tone and lyrical content: Look at me, a sad doll Tied under string Look, I’m still being dragged around by you These tough feelings are hard to cut off I’m still in your hands, I’m that doll The dance’s issue it that it seems exaggerated. That’s part of its charm despite how polarizing it is in the K-Pop community. The moves are supposed to be exaggerated 1st EDITION 11
You’re so bad is it fun for you?
Juxtaposed with the dance are white scenes. Each member interacts with the white room to some capacity. White represents purity, freedom and vulnerability as the lyrics reflect. I don’t like you, I hate you You haven’t changed at all, I haven’t changed either When you touch me, I accept it Tell me, am I a joke to you? Each girl has time to ponder the relationship and what it’s doing to her. Actions aren’t exaggerated, and there is a feeling of despair. Stellar performs well because viewers can feel their sadness. Hyoeun’s part where she crosses out her face in the mirror stood out most because it suggested she hated herself for being controlled. Now, the milk scene feels odd given the tone of the video. JunYool allows the milk to drip down her breasts, a clear reference to sex with the milk representing male fluids. This scene is nearly pornographic but fits the lyrics. You’re so bad, I’m hurting again You haven’t changed at all, I haven’t changed either I’m reacting to your fickle nature Tell me, is this fun for you?
The only explanation is JunYool gives in to sex to appease her man. What message does this send to young listeners watching the video? It’s never okay to do something to please another, but this line says otherwise. It fits the puppet theme, but it is cringe-worthy. From a Western perspective, “Marionette” is no different from other sexy concepts. It’s mild compared to videos like N.O.M’s “A-Guys,” which features members dressed like S&M strippers while shoving their hands in their pants. This video earned comments saying it was “entertaining,” showing a double standard in the industry. After School “First Love”/via YouTube; Stellar “Marionette”/via YouTube; N.O.M “A Guys”/via YouTube Furthermore, were Stellar’s actions any different from After School’s “First Love” which featured stripper poles? Not really, but the difference is that many Westerners considered “First Love” as doing a striptease in a “classy way,” while Stellar was “slutty.” A sexy concept is a sexy concept: If one is questionable, all should be since each group—male or female—is objectified to win an audience. However, Korean culture is far more conservative with female sexuality: Bare breasts and bellies shouldn’t be on display. But, if it’s wrong, why go for the concept? It gets a group noticed. Overall, “Marionette” is a quality video, it’s a shame it garnered so much hate because it matches the song. It is worth watching since it provides a lot to ponder. Is it too sexual? To some, yes, but it’s no different from other sexy concepts.

“WHAT’S UP”
FUN, ADDICTING, UNFINISHED JOELLE HALON
W
hile many great new K-Dramas exist, sometimes a nostalgia trip is in order to visit dramas forgotten over time.
2011-2012’s musical drama “What’s Up” was the ticket. With melodrama, music and relatable characters, the initial story captivated. Toward the end, abrupt shifts caused one to scream “what’s up!?” The drama follows several first-year musical students trying to find success. “What’s Up” feels like a Korean version of “Fame” with the individual subplots. Each student has to overcome hardship: Do-Sung (Big Bang’s Daesung) and Doo-Ri (Lim Ju-Eun) search for identities outside family secrets and expectations; Jae-Hun (Lim Ju-Hwan) wants to escape his criminal past; Tae-Yi (Kim Ji-Won) remains haunted by her father’s death; Byung-Gun (Cho Jung-Seok) battles stage fright; and ChaeYoung’s (Jang Hee-Jin) star faded long ago. Each character’s growth made the plot realistic. It was like watching close friends find their identities. Two storylines shined: Jae-Hun and Tae-Yi’s sadness-marred romance and Doo-Ri and teacher Sunwoo’s (Oh Man-Seok) ill-fated, one-sided love. The series’ writers excelled since both stories brought a good share of laughter and tears given Tae-Yi’s sweet awkwardness and Doo-Ri obsessive tendencies. However, Do-Sung and Chae-Young’s plots felt incomplete. Writers needed to focus more on why Do-Sung had to hide his identity and deny he’s his mother’s son. With Chae“TWO STORYLINES SHINED: Young, viewers can assume the entertainment industry JAE-HUN AND TAEtreated her poorly, but YI’S SADNESS-MARRED this doesn’t explain her ROMANCE AND DOO-RI manipulative tendencies.
AND TEACHER SUNWOO’S (OH MAN-SEOK) ILL-FATED, ONE-SIDED LOVE.”

Despite weak points, writers did well with character development and casting.
“WHAT’S UP” HAD MANY MUSICAL TRIUMPHS. EACH SONG HAD MEANING AND MOVED THE PLOT FORWARD, ADDING A FUN ELEMENT”
Lim Ju-Hwan’s Jae-Hun was perfect. His skills made the ex-criminal sympathetic. Equal parts bad boy and sweetheart, Jae-Hun wore his heart on his sleeve when conning and caring about people. Lim Ju-Hwan transitioned to each complex side of Jae-Hun with ease. When paired with Kim Ji-Won’s Tae-Yi, magic happens.
“WHAT’S UP.” IS A ROUGH DIAMOND, BUT WELL WORTH THE TIME TO GET INVOLVED”
Kim and Lim Ju-Hwan have amazing chemistry. They have the ability to be cute together, yet, the agonizing heartbreak they experience can tear a person apart. It’s easy to root for these two considering how much JaeHun and Tae-Yi grew up when they realize one tragic night tied their fates together. The same can be said about Lim Ju-Eun’s Doo-Ri and Oh Man-Seok’s Sunwoo. Lim Ju-Eun perfects Doo-Ri’s wild-eyed look and emotional neediness in a borderline creepy way. Her need to be loved is evident, but her desperate attempts like camping out at Sunwoo’s place may make viewers cringe.
“What’s Up” was intended to be a multiseason drama but was dropped after not having a network or a timeslot. This issue caused the series to suffer since there are many loose ends, especially given ChaeYoung’s and Do-Sung’s deal and the sparks Tae-Yi and Jae-Hun had despite two massive obstacles in their way. The last two episodes felt like there was a huge “to be continued” sign looming overhead. But, it seems the audience will never know what could have been. Overall, strong acting, great songs and good writing make “What’s Up” an unforgettable drama. However, it would be nice to have some closure for the stories that began the final two episodes. “What’s Up” is a rough diamond, but well worth the time to get involved.
Oh portrays Sunwoo’s drunken stupor and obstinate but wise nature effortlessly. Combined, Doo-Ri and Sunwoo are oil and water, but this makes their interactions more believable. One questionable inclusion was Cho Jung-Seok’s ByungGun. Byung-Gun served as comic. His scenes felt irritating since his humor came across as forced, but that might be the character’s personality. His inclusion may be good for viewers who can relate to his fears, but the writers could have done more with him than a few great songs and weak story. “What’s Up” had many musical triumphs. Each song had meaning and moved the plot forward, adding a fun element. Tae-Yi’s “Stupid Cupid,” for example, did a nice job telling her parents’ story to Jae-Hun. Doo-Ri’s cover of Four Non-Blonde’s “What’s Going On” may seem out of place, but it makes sense in setting up a poignant scene with Sunwoo viewers may not soon forget. The showstopper, however, was Tae-Yi and Byung-Gun’s cover of Laura Pausini’s “It’s Not Goodbye.” The actors portrayed the emotion in the song, making it undeniably haunting. The song set the bar high for the others in the drama. Sadly, while the other songs were great, they did not reach the epic level of “It’s Not Goodbye.” 1st EDITION EDITION 15 15 1st

BLOCK B’S NEW MV HITS “JACKPOT”
B
JOELLE HALON lock B is back, and it’s always a good day when they’re back. Zico, P.O., B-Bomb, U-Kwon, Kyung, Jaehyo, and Taeil never disappoint, and that’s the case with their new MV, “Jackpot.”
“Jackpot” is about trying to be successful and achieving dreams no matter the cost. According to the lyrics, it’s not just about being successful, but taking risks to achieve goals. Many K-Pop fans should listen to it whenever they feel like they’re not reaching their dreams because the song sends the message that they can. It’s empowering! The video takes place at an amusement park and involves the boys kidnapping a girl (actress Kim Sae Ron). In a strange twist, they give her a makeover. The concept seems like it doesn’t fit the song, but when combined with the lyrics, the MV makes sense. The imagery of carnival rides and attractions and dizzying effects symbolize life’s unpredictability when trying to find the right path. Block B, at times, represents naysayers trying to dictate what a person should become and how they get in the way, which is why Zico controls Kim and why the members chase her and hold her hostage. Eventually, she joins them, an indication she reached the “good life,” tying to the lyrics “get the money, get the money,” but goes against “we’re playing hard to get lucky.” This represents how people have to pretend to fit in before becoming whom they want. 1st EDITION 19 1st EDITION 19
The imagery of carnival rides and attractions and dizzing effects symbolize life’s unpredictability”
The video is fun and enjoyable! Compared to past Block B videos like “Very Good” and “NalinA,” “Jackpot” stands out because of the song’s positive message. There are some nitpicky critiques with the song due to tempo changes from each verse to the chorus. The chorus is the best part of the song, and fans will easily get it stuck in their heads, especially “I’m on my way.” The chorus is significantly faster than the verses, making it feel like two songs spliced together. While this may be irksome for some, considering the wackiness of the video, it feels right. “Jackpot” is Block B’s best promoted song because of its catchy nature. Despite still acting goofy, Block B showed how they matured too. Ever the contradiction, Block B isn’t the typical beefcake-handsome idol group, but they’ve cleaned up a lot since “Nillili Mambo” to show their handsome sides. Block B’s subtle shift should help them in the long run just as long as they don’t completely turn into a stereotypical idol group. Either way, “Jackpot” struck gold and showed why Block B is a contender in the industry!

AN EXCLUSIVE WITH LEE MICHELLE Tell us about you and your family while you were growing up. Because my mother was the head of the family, she was very strict and at times kind of stern. My siblings’ personalities were nearly all like that as well but when it was time to play, we had lots of humorous laughs and fun. The youngest of my older sisters played a mother’s role for me a lot particularly on my character building.
How old were you when you started singing and when did you discover you had a talent? Since I was 5~6 years old I used to sing along to the songs playing on TV or the radio and used to sing harmonizing with my sister. When I was a freshman in High school I learned singing at a practical music academy for a short while and the teacher there said I had talent. I started learning singing properly when I became a junior in High school.
Could you name some of the singers/ entertainers you admire? For Korean artists, I admire Moon-Sae Lee, Yong-Pil Cho and Lyn. (She added선배님 after each of their names. Sun-bae is a respectful term meaning ‘senior’) For oversee’s artists I admire Beyonce, Idia Arie and Ledisi.
What is your favorite song? It always depends. Nowadays I listen to ‘Treasure’ by Bruno Mars the most.
Are you satisfied of the reactions from your fans of your ‘Without you’ music video? I am just so grateful rather than just being satisfied. I’m just very thankful ‘cause I hadn’t thought there would be so many fans are out there liking and supporting me. All the more I’m just happy because of the people who are content from listening to my music.
If you were to have three wishes, what would you wish for? I don’t have any wishes, I am just content with the current life God has given me.
Do you have any special skills? I am able to think positively in any given situation, even if it’s the gloomiest state. I am at times more naive than I need to be.
What is most important to you? In meeting with God.
Do you have a boyfriend or a crush? I sometimes make one up when I sing. 24. K-Crush Magazine/May 2014

Tell us more about your ideal person. I like someone who is like a bear. My ideal is someone who is heavy and attractive, rather than a tall person with good looks.
What are the kind of clothes you enjoy wearing normally? I like wearing shirts, Man to Man T-shirts and jackets. It’s always the best to dress casually.
In the past, have you had part-time jobs or other kinds of work while you were at school? When I was a high schooler I had to earn the tuition fee for the academy so I got a job at a fast food restaurant. I took orders, worked as a cashier and made burgers.
Michelle, you are so busy these days but what do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love to watch videos of other artists on youtube, I can also watch concerts I couldn’t go to in person. When I listen to diverse music I often feel that I want to make better music.
What are your dreams and plans for the future? When I first started music I had in mind that “I must make music if there is even just one single person in this world who is happy, encouraged or be comforted through my music.” I wish I would continue without losing that in mind and make music of diverse genres and contents. Currently the craving for Kpop in the U.S is huge. Please say a few words to the American fans and also the fans from everywhere else! We wish you the best for your career and hope you’ll only have great things coming your way. First, I thank you all very much. I’ve always considered myself a very small person, thank you very much for loving me and my music. I sing about something not everyone can sing about, but I hope make music that anyone can sing along to easily. Please root for me, I am going to try to be that kind of an artist. A singer who sings about life. Thank you!

‘BOYS OVER FLOWERS’ AND ‘BOYS OVER FRIENDS’
T
he immensely popular K drama, ‘Boys Over Flowers’ which aired in January to March in 2009 was a huge hit across the world, playing a massive influence on promoting cosmetics and clothes for men plus increasing vast tourist attractions to Seoul. Affluent high schoolers’ display of excessive drama was enough to keep its viewers highly entertained for a long time. It ran for 25 episodes, increasing more ratings as it aired. From this show Lee Min Ho, who played Gu Jun Pyo with his infamous permed hairstyle was able to become an international star overnight. ‘Boys Over Flowers’ was originally the Japanese best selling Manga for girls written by Yoko Kamio. Before the Korean version of the drama emerged it was adapted into a Japanese movie and a Taiwanese version of the drama. And there’s also, an American version available with slightly different and somewhat less feminine title ‘Boys
Over Friends’ which aired since the end of 2013. The show aired four episodes but due to many difficulties, currently the show is on hold. Even before the shooting began, the ‘Boys Over Friends’ production had a hard time with the lack of funding and etc., but, their number one problem was challenges with their actors. There were two actors and actress of the show claiming they were fired over contract issues, but production described that the actors blackmailed them, demanded a raise from the beginning and they walked out thus got removed from the show. They claim the three actors of leading and supporting roles were spotted taking drugs at work by their investor. And the actress is said to have caused havoc by showing up a few hours late to work, failing to remember her lines, refusing to wear outfits prepared for her and frequently sexually harassing one of the actors. But even after she agreed and signed an agreement that she was paid in full she later went on to accuse and tried to shut 1st EDITION 29

attend as the K drama’s Shinhwa High school. And of course the F4 exists as well. The leader Liam also has a ridiculous hair like Jun Pyo, except it’s differently styled.
The Boys over friend’s production kept fairly quite until the leading role actress came out with her accusations so they decided to file a lawsuit against the three of actors for defamation, blackmail, extortion and libel.
Most of the fans of the Korean version of the drama probably wouldn’t find ‘Boys Over Friends’ as funny or interesting since there is less of any kind of drama overall, but it definitely has its own uniqueness to it. I guess due to the lack of funding and other problems the production encountered, the series seemed to have a reality show type of feel mostly. And since the actors were mostly inexperienced and newcomers to the scene, the acting interpreted from some of the actors was very unnatural and blunt while the editing and the sound didn’t run very smoothly either.
The show hasn’t aired since episode 4 in January although they have found actors to replace the ones that left. The ‘Boys Over Friends’ twitter said in their last tweet in early March that they hope to make a come back soon and thanked everyone who supported them through Crowdfunding. After watching most of the episodes online, I feel it’s safe to judge the American version is nothing like the Korean Drama if that’s what you’re expecting. The production claimed ‘Boys Over Friends’ was loosely inspired by the Manga but not an adaption or a recreation of it. Written by Kel and Eriden Williams, ‘Boys Over Friends’ is a different production work, in terms of the storyline and the characters- though there are many similarities to the original work. The ‘Boys Over Friends’ characters are college students, not high schoolers and like the title, Zoey the main character has many friends to support her unlike Jan Di from the K drama ‘Boys Over Flowers’ who is somewhat a loner at school. The setting for the American version is at a prestigious university that the rich and privileged 30. K-Crush Magazine/May 2014
Because, of the incredible sucess the previous dramas and films of the Manga achieved, a lot of fans were exspecting somthing great from the American version” Because, of the incredible success the previous dramas and films of the Manga achieved, a lot of fans were also expecting something great from the American version. The prospect of an Americanized version of the drama was very bright, since they already had a large fan base already anticipating for the show. But, the production made several mistakes, too many, which were crucial points to produce a great popular TV show.
From the reaction I gathered from YouTube and other social networks, most viewers were very disappointed or even outraged when they watched ‘Boys Over Friends.’ Even though being able to watch a series without the help of the subtitles was convenient, some commented they could not stand watching the show despite trying hard to enjoy it. The writers and the people involved are passionate and proud about their work, but it will take a lot to make a great come back. And, the show has already been gone for a few months now. There are hopeful reactions still from the people who enjoyed the show, but how and when the show will redeem itself is still to be seen. We wish ‘Boys Over Friends’ much success and a speedy comeback.

KOREA’S SIGNATURE DISH TIMELY, BUT WORTH IT JOELLE HALON When many think of Korean cuisine, the first food to come to mind is kimchi, the fermented dish that could be made from cabbage, radishes, onions, or cucumbers that has been a favorite of Koreans since the 1500s. While it’s the national dish, different regions have their own spin on kimchi. For example, the Hamgyeong-do region flavors their kimchi with different fish and oysters, whereas Hwanghae-do is famous for less spicy, pumpkin-flavored kimchi. Differenta seasons also bring different flavors. Spring kimchi flavors consist of fresh herbs; summer flavors have radish or cucumbers to help beat the heat. In all, there are 200 different types of kimchi! For many, kimchi may be a feared dished, because of the diverse flavors and long prep time due to the fermenting process. Mak kimchi can help take out the fear of kimchi-making because it has simple ingredients, but it is still a multi-step process. But, mak kimchi is vegetarian-friendly, so anyone can try it at home if you have the patience. Ingredients • • • • • • • • •
1 two-pound head of cabbage (many kimchi dishes call for Napa cabbage) 1/4 cup of sea salt 12 cups of cold, distilled water 1 tablespoon of garlic powder 1 teaspoon each of sugar and grated ginger 2 ½ tablespoons of kelp or seaweed powder 3 tablespoons red pepper flakes 6-8 ounces of radish 2-4 scallion onions (depending on size) cut into half inch pieces
Preparing Cabbage To prepare the cabbage, make sure to have a large, clean lidded jar available. If the jar can easily hold twelve cups of water, it’s perfect. • Cut cabbage so each piece measures about three inches long. • Toss the stem. • Place cabbage in a large mixing bowl; set aside. • In a medium bowl, mix sea salt and six cups of cold water together. Pour water and salt mixture onto cabbage leaves. Massage mixture into leaves until they are slightly soft. • Place the cabbage and water into the large jar. Seal jar and set aside for one hour, flipping the leaves over occasionally. • Once time passes, rinse cabbage three times. • Place cabbage in a strainer and squeeze leaves to remove excess water. Leaves should not be limp since good kimchi has crunchy leaves. Note: Do not squeeze out all the water as some of it will be needed for fermenting. • Set cabbage aside to prepare the paste. 32. K-Crush Magazine/May 2014
Paste • •
Combine ginger, sugar, kelp and garlic powder with four tablespoons of water in a small bowl. Mix until the ingredients form a paste. Once a paste forms, mix in the red pepper flakes. For milder kimchi, use 1-2 tablespoons; spicier kimchi can use 3 ½ to 5 tablespoons.
Putting it Together • • • • •
Wear rubber gloves and mix the dried cabbage in the jar with the radishes, scallions, and paste. Mix ingredients well so cabbage, onion, and radish are evenly coated in the paste. Press veggie mix down so liquids and spice fill the jar; this is why some water needed to remain in the jar. This is necessary so the mix can ferment. Place lid on jar and let it sit out for up to five days. Kimchi needs to remain at room temperature during the fermenting process. After five days, taste kimchi. It should not be too bitter, sour or bland. Place in the fridge. Kimchi can be eaten right away or saved for up to two weeks.
Making kimchi seems daunting because it has so many steps, but the results are worth it. Plus, you can always play with the ingredients and the time it takes to make the treat, so it becomes customized to your taste. Give it a try!

B.A.P’S “CHICAGO ATTACK” JOELLE HALON
WHY THEY ARE THE BEST ABSOLUTE PERFECT B.A.P perform "Body & Soul." (B.A.P/via Joelle Halon) “B.A.P… B.A.P… B.A.P” Fanchants echo throughout the theater, shaking the walls and ground. The green Matoki ocean glowed so bright, the stage didn’t need lights. A moment so amazing it’s surreal. Standing there felt like a dream as Midwest residents waited for B.A.P’s appearance. One girl gleefully exclaimed she drove for 14 hours to be here. Armed with a camera, she prepared to soak in the moment, tears in her eyes. Her equally excited friend held her hand, joining in the chant. Joy rained from everywhere as it’s rare for any K-Pop artist to visit Chicago. Hints of eagerness
came from no longer feeling left out of an experience usually reserved for New York and Los Angeles. At the concession stand, one woman said she postponed her wedding to be here. The girl beside her shared that this was her boyfriend’s birthday gift since he turned their bedroom into a B.A.P shrine. The woman behind them, dressed in a homemade Yong Guk t-shirt and Daehyun hat, shocked when she said she is a 75-year-old grandmother of five who came because Yong Guk is an inspiring young man. She came alone. This concert was a big deal. On April 19, 2014, B.A.P landed
at the Star Plaza Theater in Merrillville, Indiana for the Chicago leg of the Live on Earth tour. Every moment, from false starts (fans cheered advertisements) to even the slightest glimpse of any person on stage made fans scream. Then, 8pm rolled around! Promptly, the screen shifted to a news program announcing a mysterious sight before lifting to reveal Yong Guk, Himchan, Jongup, Zelo, Daehyun and Young Jae! These moments caused laughter to echo across the auditorium and the ladies to swoon, adding another layer of enjoyment. KOREA – TRENDING he Korean traditional products plated with mother of pearl (also called nacre) products are always beautiful and interesting to look at which are available from dressing stands to tables, mirrors, beds, and just about everything. You must have seen mother-of-pearl ornaments selling in the streets not only in Korean souvenir shops, but many other regions since they are widely exported. Of course, mother-of-pearl is used and produced in other countries like Turkey, U.S.A, Greece, etc., for many years, but the styles are distinguished depending on the culture. There are few craftsmen in Korea who have been in the mother-of-pearl business for many decades producing traditional hand-made furniture, jars and numerous diverse ornaments. Traditionally in Korea, when a woman gets married she brings new furniture and miscellaneous supplies needed around the house as her dowry. Until recently it was very common and popular for newly wedded brides to bring mother-of–pearl ornaments like a dressing table, wardrobe to their new marital home and so on. Because these mother-of pearl products are attentively handcrafted which requires great artistry and very long hours to complete, it is usual that most of them would be a little differently patterned, making them unique in its way. The prices vary a lot depending on its quality. The texture of the mother-of-pearl is shiny and the surface very smooth, so it makes it handy to clean plus preserves well, therefore, they can last a very long time. Mother-of-pearl is an organic-inorganic produced by molluscs as an inner shell layer, which are actually what makes the coating of pearls. stones to add with the mother-of-pearl decorations’ surface. And, because the mother-of-pearl products have been popular gifts to tourists for many years, the mother-of-pearl products also kept up to the rapid change of times to produce different gadgets anyone could use on a daily basis. You can easily catch sights of phone covers, USB connectors, accessories, wallets and more available in souvenir shops and online. Another good thing is that those products are high quality hand-crafted with a great deal of care, if you purchase the ones made locally (Korea) that is. But, unless the product is of the best quality natural mother-of-pearl, you need to be careful in handling, so it doesn’t crack. If you are looking for something traditionally Korean style that you can make use of, the use of motherof-pearl ornaments could be the right choice for you. Well, things maybe not so traditional these days, because you can also easily find mother-of-pearl phone covers with PSY’s cartoon figure, hello kitties and even your school logo in many varieties of colors. No matter how elaborate or brightly colored they might be decorated mother-of-pearl products are elegant and beautiful to look at. And, can be given as a gift people would appreciate. This weekend, I looked around in many souvenir shops in Seoul, picked out three tiny chest-ofdrawers in different colors that had mother-ofpearl patterned all around to place rings and smaller accessories, which were of agreeable price and lovely to behold. They were made of wood inside making them very light and portable. These elegant pieces seemed like the perfect gifts to send to my friends abroad.

SUPER JUNIOR
he 13-member boy band, Super Junior, well known for their youthful, energetic and catchy songs have been in the Kpop entertainment business since 2005, and some members have already hit their early 30’s. When they first came into the Kpop scene, because of the group’s large number of members they say they had concerns whether there would be much individual camera time for their first appearance on TV.
T
it was ‘slave contract’, which ended up bringing up contract issues of all the SJ members and other artists. Some problems died down in time but there’s still countless disputes and hateful comments from the netizens on whether they can really sing well enough to be considered singers.
These days, even if you don’t listen to their music it is quite inevitable to see any Super Junior members appearing on Korean TV and the media since they are everywhere, having various roles in variety shows in show presenting, acting in dramas, appearing as guests on the radio or TV and so on.
My opinion about their singing and performance after going to see their live concert in December 2013, for the Treasure Island concert in Kintex was that, I was mildly surprised at some of the members’ singing ability. I was fully aware for years Kyuhyun and Ryeowook could sing well enough to have their own solo careers, but still it was great to hear some really good quality singing instead of just watching a lot of dance moves with the music playing.
Throughout the years of their career as an ‘idol’ group, Super Junior definitely had their share of down falls. It looked like it was the end for them when Kang In got into a some kind of fight and later a DUI, when the former Chinese member Hang Geng sued the management, SM to terminate his contract claiming
Yesung and Leeteuk were away due to their military service, it was Heechul’s first concert from the public service of two years-and SJ hadn’t had a concert in Korea for since in ages, so it was a special concert for SJ and their E.L.Fs. 1st EDITION 39
These days, even if you don’t listen to their music, it is quite inevitable to see any Super Junior members appearing on Korean TV and the media since they are everywhere. Overall Super junior’s concert looked like they did a lot of preparation and they brought out a satisfying performance for the fans. What I found interesting about the ‘Treasure Island” concert was the fact the members got into a pair or by themselves to perform songs of other Korean artists, rather than singing their number 1 hit ‘Sorry Sorry’ for instance. One memorable song was Kangin’s performance of the deceased pop star, Kim Sung Jae’s song called ‘So To Say’. (Kim died in 1995 at the age of 23, after his first solo performance from a speculated murder.) Most fans especially the non-Korean fans probably had

no idea what some of the songs of other artists were, but nevertheless, the concert hall was packed with oversee’s fans from Asia and elsewhere seemed to enjoy themselves. Super Junior are said to be on good terms with the people at their management. They are good with people, grateful for what they have, and in general natural born entertainers. My judgement tells me those are the reasons they managed to hold out this long in this industry. Maintaining a position in a Kpop business where everything is always changing with countless people training to take your place is as difficult as getting into a new career especially when their management is known for its long hours of severe training. It is obvious that their relationship with the people they work with, their talent as entertainers, and most of all their loyal fans from all across the globe have got them to where they are today.

STARTING A FAN CLUB
T
JUYEON OH
here are different ways to start a fan club. The most common way is by creating a website. You all should know that the best way of promoting something is by a good advertisement. If you have good technological skills, then you could create some cool designs to make it stand out, so it would get people’s attention when they see it.
Now, before going through all the steps, you should try to get people to help you because it’ll take a lot of work and time to do it alone. Even if they’re not into Kpop, it’s okay! Because, by the time you guys finish creating the fan club, all of you will be addicted to it! The main thing you need is a name for your fan club. It should be simple enough, so that the fans can memorize it quickly, but it also has to be meaningful, something that symbolizes your idol group. Once you have your club name, the most important things you need are pictures, and I mean LOTS of pictures to decorate the whole website with them. And, you also need some background music to get people interested. One last thing and you are done! You’re probably at the point of saying these things in your mind “ugh, why did I even do this..” or “what did I get myself into..”? But, you can’t give up, you’re almost there! There’s just one more thing to do. Fan clubs can’t exist without the fans right? You should create a “join” button on the website so people can be a part of it if they have an interest. Let’s go onto the next topic shall we? Many people want to know who the most respected and respectful fan clubs are and I will tell you all about them. Not all fandoms can be perfect. Not everyone is nice, but that doesn’t mean that they’re all mean. I guess it’s a way of showing your love to your favorite idol but sometimes it can go a little over the top. The following groups are known for their respectful fan clubs: 1. Infinite- Inspirit (metal gold pearl) 2. Shinee- Shawol (pearl aqua green) 3. SS501- Triple S (pearl light green) 4. Super Junior- E.L.F (pearl sapphire blue) 5. TVXQ- Cassiopeia (pearl red) 6. U Kiss- Kiss Me (pearl fuchsia)

Beast- B2UTY (dark grey) Big Bang- V.I.P (has no official color) fans usually wave black and white handkerchiefs or yellow crown glow sticks instead.
The groups’ fan clubs that are listed above have rarely caused any problems. They seem to be the most quiet, and respectful fan clubs, which is why the list is so short. You might be curious why I didn’t list any girl groups. That is because, their fans seem to be the ones always causing drama with other fans and sometimes even with each other. It’s just their way of showing loyalty to their artist, which you will never understand unless you become a fan yourself. If fan clubs are being disruptive or causing drama, disrespecting anyone, including other fans should not happen at all. It takes a lot to be a true Kpop fan. If there are ever any mishaps with their artist, they never stop caring. And, always stick around to see how their artist is doing. But, that’s not all. When a new music video is released, they spend most of their time replaying the video over and over to make the view count go up. To celebrate their comeback, they spend hours on the Internet trying to find the perfect gift. Others save up money until the day they can spend it all on buying their albums. They also make up cheers and send them to other fans to memorize. And, on the day of their comeback they all go to the show and support their artist and say all the cheers at the instrumental parts. Seeing how much the fans will go through to support their idols are truly amazing. Starting a loyal fan club can be fun. Just remember to respect each other’s opinions and each other’s members.
