The Unsung Genius of Kenny Davern: A Jazz Appreciation Month Special Jazz writer Nat Hentoff says clarinetist Kenny Davern (pictured) “never got the credit he deserved” in spite of his “continuous imagination and vitality.” This week we look back at some of Kenny’s great stories and performances from his appearances on Riverwalk Jazz.
4/10 Jazzonia: Jazz and the Poetry of Langston Hughes 4/17 Chicago’s Jazz Age Melting Pot As musicians like King Oliver (pictured), Jelly Roll Morton, New Orleans Rhythm Kings and a host of blues queens made the move from Texas and New Orleans to Chicago, it became America’s melting pot for hot, blues-driven jazz. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band, pianist Shelly Berg, actor Vernel Bagneris and vocalist Topsy Chapman get together to explore Chicago’s great ‘musical migration.’
4/24 Eddie Condon: Renaissance Man of Jazz The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and their guests, Seinfeld’s Jerry Stiller and vocalist Stephanie Nakasian remember beloved jazz guitarist, nightclub owner, bandleader and family man Eddie Condon (pictured), in this exploration of one of the most colorful personalities in jazz.

Jazz in Song, The Singing Instrumentalists
Many jazz instrumentalists have stepped into the singer's role -- Fats Waller, Nat "King" Cole, Jack Teagarden, and Chet Baker, to name a few. With their mastery of phrasing, such musicians have transferred their talents into song in distinctive ways.
4/11 Jazz in Song, The Jazz Standard What are the jazz standards? How do tunes like "Body and Soul," "My Funny Valentine," or "Autumn Leaves" become standards? And what impact did Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and others have on the making of standards?
4/18 Bassist Oscar Pettiford 4/25 Pianist Bill Evans Pianist Bill Evans turned out to be one of the most influential pianists of his generation. Before his untimely death in 1980, he had made nearly one hundred recordings. He became well known for his work with Miles Davis. He broke new ground with drummer Paul Motian and bassist Scott LaFaro in the development of the jazz trio.

Now, baritone Kevin Mahogany joins Todd Williams—one of today's great tenor sax men—to recreate classics from that 1963 collaboration, including: Dedicated to You, Autumn Serenade and You Are Too Beautiful.

On this 2007 program recorded before a live audience at the John F. Kennedy Center, Taylor performs his tunes In Loving Memory and If You Really Are Concerned; then he joins McPartland for a duet of These Foolish Things.
4/20 Veronia Nunn with Travis Shook Vocalist Veronica Nunn grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, absorbing all kinds of music, from jazz to funk to gospel. When she moved to New York in 1978, she split her time between Harlem's jazz clubs and the Theology Department at Lehman College. Now a full-time jazz singer, Nunn, accompanied by her pianist and husband, Travis Shook, demonstrates her soulful touch on One Note Samba and I'm Old Fashioned.

T hursday & F riday , A pril 28 & 29, 4-6 pm In 1970, George Wein, jazz impresario behind the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals, was hired to design and produce a unique festival for New Orleans. Wein’s concept of the Louisiana Heritage Fair—a large daytime exhibition with multiple stages featuring a wide variety of indigenous music styles, food booths of Louisiana cuisine, and arts and crafts, workshops, along with an evening concert series—turned into The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which became known as “Jazz Fest”. In addition to Mahalia Jackson and Duke Ellington, the first Festival lineup included Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, Clifton Chenier, Fats Domino, The Meters, The Preservation Hall Band, parades every day with The Olympia Brass Band and Mardi Gras Indians, and many others. In 1970, about 350 people attended the Festival but over the years it has grown to over 650,000! What started out as a one day celebration turned into a five-day event in 1975 and expanded to two full weekends the following year. In the 1980s, Jazz Fest continued to experience a tremendous growth in popularity and began to gain wide acclaim as one of the world’s greatest cultural festivities. With 12 stages of soul-stirring music—jazz, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, blues, R&B, rock, funk, African, Latin, Caribbean, folk, and much more—the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is a singular celebration. The event has showcased most of the great artists of New Orleans and Louisiana of the last half century in addition to blending in a wide mix of nationally and internationally renowned guests. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival continues to celebrate the culture of Louisiana with the combined fervor of a gospel hymn and the joy of a jazz parade. This year’s Jazz Fest runs from April 28th through May 8th. For more information, log onto www.nojazzfest.com. And get in the mood, by tuning in to KCSM Radio from 4-6PM on Thursday and Friday, April 28th and 29th for Highlights from last year’s Jazz Fest. Hey, La Bas!
