CLAIMING THE TITLE: GAY OLYMPICS ON TRIAL In 1982, a San Francisco athletic group tries to hold a “Gay Olympics,” instigating what will ultimately become a battle at the U.S. Supreme Court and a challenge over the place of gays and lesbians in American Society. The inner workings of the Court are exposed, revealing an institution and individual justices—real people with human emotions and deeply felt assumptions—divided and in conflict Wednesday, August 2 at 8:30 pm

Hawaii: Roots of Fire Go down below the Hawaiian Islands in a search for the hidden forces that drive the planet's largest and most active volcanic system. Follow earth scientists as they work among the volcanoes of the Big Island of Hawaii, pursuing clues and compiling evidence in a quest to shed new light on the mysterious inner Earth process that has been producing giant volcanoes in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for more than 75 million years. All Aboard This 3-part series traces the American Railroad story drawn from historical accounts, authentic newsreel footage and archival photographs. Each episode crosscuts with one-of-a-kind moving train images and rare photographs that follow three distinct facets of the Railroad Passenger story: the history of Locomotives, Railroad Mail Service and the Pullman Sleeper story. Supporting interviews combining oral histories with restoration participants and historians round out the series. Sunday, August 7, 14 & 21 at 8:00 pm

Passing Poston: An American Story

Between 1942 and 1945, The Poston Relocation Center in Arizona housed more than 18,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans, who worked as laborers to construct schools, farm the land and construct an irrigation system. Discover the moving and haunting stories of four former detainees. A tragic past haunts each person, now in the last chapter of their lives, as they struggle to reconcile the trauma of their youth and give voice to the sense of dislocation JapaneseAmericans felt and how many of them still search and yearn to find their rightful place in the United States. Over the past three decades defined-benefit plans have been replaced, for the most part, by defined-contribution plans like 401(k)s. But the majority of Americans with 401(k)s are not saving the maximum amount they can, and in many cases are not saving at all. Should the government play a greater—or different—role in getting Americans to save more for their retirement? (R 8/11 at 5:30a)

8/15 Jimmy Witherspoon Blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon had a deep, smoky voice and recorded dozens of albums and fronted bands and orchestras. Throughout his career, "Spoon" managed to span the worlds of blues, R&B and jazz with his deep baritone and unique style. His collaborators ranged from Count Basie to Eric Burdon, Gerry Mulligan to Van Morrison, and T-Bone Walker to Robben Ford.

8/22 Melba Liston Melba Liston (1926-1999) made her mark as one of the few women to succeed as a jazz instrumentalist, composer, and arranger. A trombonist in the '40s, '50s and '60s, she played in big bands and led her own group in the '70s and '80s. As an accomplished arranger, she brought musical life to the songs of artists as diverse as Billie Holiday, Gloria Lynne, Art Blakey, Milt Jackson, and even Marvin Gaye. And her musical collaboration with pianist Randy Weston for more than thirty years produced such critically acclaimed albums as The Spirits of Our Ancestors and Volcano Blues.

8/10 Marian McPartland Selects: Ray Bryant 8/17 Carla Bley and Steve Swallow Fifty years ago clarinetist/saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre formed his influential yet under-appreciated trio with bassist Steve Swallow and pianist Paul Bley. The group split after a gig in which they made 35 cents each. The music of Bley's then-wife, Carla, was central to the group. On this Piano Jazz, Carla Bley and Steve Swallow join McPartland for trio renditions of Carla Bley originals "Ida Lupino and "Ad Infinitum.

8/24 Regina Carter Jazz violinist Regina Carter is one of today's most original and daring musicians. Classically trained, Carter grew up in Detroit, where she absorbed all of the music that Motown had to offer. In 2010, she released the critically acclaimed album Reverse Thread, an exploration of the rhythms and instruments of the African Diaspora. Carter brings her stellar technique and infectious energy to bear when she joins McPartland for "Chattanooga Choo Choo and "In A Sentimental Mood.
