JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 2/7

Duke Ellington Bandleader Part 1

2/14 Duke Ellington Bandleader Part 2 2/21 Vocalist Carmen McRae Carmen McRae was an outstanding song stylist whose great strength was in her phrasing and interpretation of lyrics. She was also an excellent pianist, whose personal approach and musicianship developed during her occasional performances at Minton's Playhouse during the early years of bebop.

2/28 Vocalist Frank Sinatra

To mark the anniversary of his birth (Dec. 12), we'll focus on the life and legacy of Francis Albert Sinatra (1915 - 1988) -- one of the great vocalists of the American century. The program will trace his roots in Hoboken, NJ and his early discovery by bandleader Harry James, to his breakthrough appeal to the "bobby soxers" as the vocalist with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in the 1940, to his second "golden era" with Capitol Records in the 1950s, where his recordings with Nelson Riddle and Billy May have achieved legendary status.

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm 2/1

Sketches of Gil Evans. Wynton Marsalis, Host. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra honors the godfather of “cool”—the incomparable arranger and composer Gil Evans (pictured.) His large ensemble work—especially with Miles Davis –opened ears to a softer way of big band arranging. This concert features some of his collaborations with Davis and Evans’ own compositions.

Jon Batiste Marian McPartland Selects - Billy Childs Pianist/composer/arranger Billy Childs (pictured) carves out new spaces on the jazz landscape and blends elements of classical music with jazz to create what he calls "chamber jazz." His 2005 album Lyric won two Grammy Awards. On this session from 2006, Childs performs his composition Into The Light and his Grammy-nominated arrangement of Scarborough Fair.

2/16 Latin Romance with guest host Murray Horwitz 2/23 Shirley Horn Pianist and singer Shirley Horn (pictured) was known for her masterful ability to accompany her vocals. Her first interest was classical music, but fortunately for the jazz world, Miles Davis gave her some rare high praise in 1960, and the rest is history. On this session from 1990, Horn plays and sings But Beautiful and For All We Know and joins host McPartland for a piano duet on Isn't It Romantic?
