On The Cover July 2011 As we look toward celebrating our nation and how we got to where we are, KCSM TV will present several programs that celebrate us! Tim Janis: Beautiful America (Saturday, July 2 at 8:30pm) shows us the beauty of this land that we live in. If you haven't been able to travel, tune in from the comfort of your couch and see some our magnificent sites. Questioning The Constitution (Sunday, July 3 at 8:00pm) looks at the document upon which we are governed, and examines whether or not it can —or should —be updated. Marina at West Point: Unity Through Diversity (Monday, July 4 at 8:30pm) features the West Point Cadets and Glee Club singing some of our most patriotic melodies. Long Shadows: The Legacy of the American Civil War (Sunday, July 17 at 8:00pm) explores the ways in which the American Civil War can still be felt today, nearly 150 years after the last shot was fired. Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 7/4

Count Basie: The Man and His Music (Part 1)

This first installment traces Basie's (pictured) early years; his childhood, pilgrimage to Harlem, and early life as a traveling musician. Part one ends with Basie's arrival in Kansas City, and his encounter with the Benny Moten Band.

7/11 Count Basie: The Man and His Music (Part 2)

The story covers a period that marks the both the pinnacle of success for Basie's Kansas City style and also some setbacks, including the death of tenor man Herschel Evans, the recording ban of the early 1940s, and the advent of World War II.

7/18 Count Basie: The Man and his Music (part 3) Notwithstanding their earlier success, Basie's band was not immune to the post-WW II collapse of the swing bands. The '50s prove to be grand for Basie as singer Joe Williams comes aboard and they hit the charts with "Every Day I Have the Blues." The story concludes with the chronicle of another reunion with Norman Granz - one that leads to the famous "piano battle" with Oscar Peterson.

7/25 Willie "The Lion" Smith Willie "The Lion" Smith (pictured) musician's musician whose original approach to the keyboard has made him the envy of virtually every pianist in jazz. He was part of the Harlem stride scene perfected by pianists James P. Johnson and Thomas Fats Waller. This show features rare tape of Smith talking and playing.

She shows off her dual talents on Lionel Hampton's "Midnight Sun" and joins in with her pianist, Leo Genovese, to sing a tune that seems to be her motto - "Jazz Ain't Nothing But Soul."

7/20 Remembering Joe Morello: The Hickory House Trio Reunion Drummer Joe Morello was known for his pioneering work with Dave Brubeck, but in the early 1950s he performed with Marian McPartland and bassist Bill Crow in the Hickory House Trio. In 1991, the trio (pictured) reunited for a special Piano Jazz session to share music and memories from their days on New York's 52nd Street jazz scene. Tunes include "Skylark, "Falling in Love with Love, and "Things Ain't What They Used to Be. Morello passed away earlier this year at age 82.

WRAPPIN’ IT UP: TAKE 101 By Alisa Clancy, Operations Director and Weekday Host of A Morning Cup of Jazz

There’s an anatomy to every pledge drive and the 101 refers not to our local highway but to the number of pledges I’ve driven through. Let’s see, this Spring Drive was 11+ hours a day over 18 days, that’s about 198 hours, and it always comes down to the nail-biting, teeth-gnashing, carnival barking, three or four hours at the end—and you know, I love that ride! Note: Unlike my husband, I adore thrill rides.

PICTURED: Alisa Clancy (Far right), Chris Phillips (Far Left)

There’s the early optimism at 6am, “Hmmmm, we could make it by 10am,” I say to Chris Phillips. “Yeah, when pigs fly,” is his nudgy smiling response. If Chris Phillips wasn’t employed here at KCSM he’d have them rolling in the aisles at The Punch Line…seriously, he’s that funny! Whoa, then it hits, the flip-flop at 7:15, “What, no phone calls that break!” Cue the band in my head… Let me just break into the tune a little bit and remind them of the challenge…curb the music, we have work to do! Ah, hell, I didn’t mean to play that tune, it’s too slow! This is a morning show, damnit! “Should we do the sing-along, Chris?” I ask. “Yeah," he responds, "Tell ‘um we’ll even get our general manager, Marilyn, singing in here for a $1000 pledge.” (Strangely, Marilyn doesn’t seem keen on this strategy). “Don’t worry,” Chris says, “We’ll get ‘um on the backside of the hour” (that’s radio speak for pledges that usually come in during the last 15 minutes of each hour). And, there you are, right on time, 7:50am…call after call after call. “Too many to thank this break, Chris, let’s play music over the top of the hour. More up-tempo blues, party tunes. No, we played too much of that Ray Charles yesterday.” After nearly three weeks of pledge (was it really?) there are still rabbits to come out of those hats aren’t there? In the words of Anita O’Day, Thanks for the Boogie Ride!
