Dear KCSM Members, June is a very busy month for most people as the school year comes to an end. Many will be graduating and looking to continue their education, while others will be entering into the work force. There are also thoughts of warm weather, vacations, and much needed winding down and relaxation.
At KCSM, we are coming to the end of our fiscal year. It is a time in which we need your help to end the year financially sound. If you enjoy the programming on KCSM, please visit kcsm.org/pledge and show your support. We know that a financial contribution can be difficult, but any donation helps now more than ever. We are supported by our community, and we want your ideas and suggestions on what programming you would like to see and hear at kcsm.org/community
KCSM-TV will experience an increased amount of pledge programming this month. We think you will find them as interesting and informative as our regular shows, and they will help bring new supporters into our community. We have received a lot positive feedback following our program changes and we need you to continue to give us your comments and suggestions about the types of programming you want to see. KCSM Jazz 91 finished the spring pledge drive strong. Thank you to the volunteers that gave their time to answer phones, the local businesses that supported the drive with food donations or gifts, and to all of you that contributed.
To celebrate, we are planning two days of live jazz performances on Friday June 11th and Saturday June 12th at the CSM Theater! We are still ironing out the details, so the most up-to-date information can be found at kcsm.org/livejazz Your continued support of KCSM will ensure that our next fiscal year will bring more entertaining tv and great jazz. Sincerely,
Marilyn Lawrence General Manager

These incredibly skilled players, their former glory a fond memory, muscles creaking, hairlines receding and waistlines expanding, now work as window washers, traders and electricians-but the weekend is theirs, and their passion for the game remains! June 2010 The Festival Road Less Traveled
pictured: Jazz a Vienne logo
By Kathleen Lawton, Host Crazy ‘Bout The Blues and Friday Jazz Oasis
Montreux may be the summer festival, but it’s famous and obvious. Wouldn’t you rather visit a Roman theater in France, listen to Fado in Portugal, or walk the haunting remains of Hadrian’s Wall (built in AD 122) in Northumberland? You can have all that—and a hearty jazz fix too—at a few of the lesser-known jazz festivals that proliferate throughout Europe this summer.
Take Jazz à Vienne (www.jazzavienne.com). Don’t book your ticket to Austria. This Vienne is in France, about 30 miles south of Lyon, and once a home to Roman emperors. Today it’s the setting for an annual jazz festival divided between a breathtaking ancient Roman theater and various clubs scattered throughout the city. The 2010 lineup includes Regina Carter, Brad Mehldau, Paolo Conte, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. You can experience Portugal’s searing, soulful Fado songs of pain and longing— after a day exploring the charming, golden streets of the gorgeous adjoining coastal villages of Cascais/Estoril, home to Estoril Jazz/Jazz On a Summer Day (www.projazz.pt). For more than 4,000 years, humans have enjoyed this sunlit slice of land on the Atlantic and the winding streets are rich in history and architecture. For this year, expect to meet Renee Rosnes, Wallace Roney or Charles Lloyd at the festival lineup, held in the town’s famous casino. Everyone’s heard of its coals (no longer mined there, by the way), but not too many people know about Newcastle’s jazz festival, tucked up in the northeast corner of the UK. You won’t have a chance to enjoy this unique “classic” jazz festival unless you catch this year ’s Whitley Bay International Jazz Festival (www.whitleybayjazzfest.org), as the director is retiring and this is the final year for “the best classic jazz festival in the world”, which includes everything from ragtime to swing, with dozens of groups from Sweden, Japan, Chile, Australia—and more. Nearby lie the charming villages of the Tyne River Valley, like Corbridge and Hexham, and the awesome desolation of Hadrian’s Wall. If you’re thinking of summer jazz festivals, this time, think—something different! For your consideration, a few other alternatives: Festival de Jazz de Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, www.jazzvitoria.com Bohemia Jazzfest, Czech Republic, www.bohemiajazzfest.cz Pori Jazz Festival, Finland, www.porijazz.fi Oslo Jazz Festival, Norway, www.oslojazz.no Salzburger Jazz-Herbst, Austria, www.salzburgerjazzherbst.at

Artie Shaw
Artie Shaw (1910-2004) (pictured) was one of the most admired instrumentalists of the twentieth century, matching an immaculate technique to a clarinet sound that was indescribably beautiful. His big bands were among the best of the swing era and his small group, known as the Gramercy Five, was trend setting. Shaw will always be remembered as one of the most important musicians of the swing period.
6/14 Anita O'Day
Singer Anita O'Day (pictured) has experienced both the "high times and hard times"—as her autobiography is so aptly titled—of a jazz singer. In the mid-'40s she was a celebrated vocalist with the Stan Kenton and Gene Krupa orchestras. In the mid-'50s, she had a string of highly regarded albums. Drug addiction interfered with her potential for super-stardom, yet she still had a profound impact in jazz with her exceptional range at improvisation and her skill at interpreting a lyric.

Seventy Years of Blue Note: Hard Bop and Beyond In the middle of the 20th century, the sound and soul of hard bop were captured in recordings by Milt Jackson, Dexter Gordon, Lou Donaldson and Horace Silver on the Blue Note label. In the House of Swing, Singer Dianne Reeves (pictured) and saxophonist Joe Lovano join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to honor the past and glimpse the future of that label on its seventieth anniversary.

Remembering Rosemary Clooney Piano Jazz pays tribute to the late Rosemary Clooney (pictured with Marian). One of America's most beloved entertainers, she is probably best known for her starring role in White Christmas. On this program from 1992, Clooney reminisces about her singing career with her sister Betty in Tony Pastor's band. Her rich, smooth voice and skillful phrasing add to the deep feeling on Our Love Is Here To Stay and the challenging Lush Life.

He spent several years in Morocco, and incorporated African musical forms and musicians in his recorded work. On this Piano Jazz, Weston returns to the program with host McPartland to perform A Ballad for T., Little Niles, and African Lady.
